¹In the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim king of Judah came Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon to Jerusalem, and besieged it.

¹در سومین سال پادشاهی یَهویاقیم در یهودا، نِبوکدنِزر پادشاه بابل به اورشلیم حمله برد و آن را محاصره کرد.

²The Lord The word translated “Lord” is “Adonai.” gave Jehoiakim king of Judah into his hand, with part of the vessels of the house of God The Hebrew word rendered “God” is “Elohim.” ; and he carried them into the land of Shinar to the house of his god: and he brought the vessels into the treasure house of his god.

²خداوند، یَهویاقیم، پادشاه یهودا و بعضی از ظروف عبادتگاه را به نبوکدنصر تسلیم کرد. نبوکدنصر آن ها را به سرزمین بابل به معبد خدای خود برد و ظروف را در خزانۀ خدای خود گذاشت.

³The king spoke to Ashpenaz the master of his eunuchs, that he should bring in certain of the children of Israel, even of the seed royal and of the nobles;

³آنگاه به اَشفَناز ـ آمر اهل دربار خود ـ فرمان داد تا از میان خانوادۀ سلطنتی و از بین اشراف و نجیب زادگان بنی اسرائیل که اسیر شده بودند جوانانی را انتخاب کند ـ

⁴youths in whom was no blemish, but well-favored, and skillful in all wisdom, and endowed with knowledge, and understanding science, and such as had ability to stand in the king’s palace; and that he should teach them the learning and the language of the Chaldeans.

⁴افرادی که زرنگ، با هوش، دانا، خوشرو، بدون عیب و نقص و خوش اندام باشند ـ تا بتوانند در دربار خدمت کنند. به آن ها خواندن و نوشتن زبان کلدانی را نیز بیاموزند.

⁵The king appointed for them a daily portion of the king’s dainties, and of the wine which he drank, and that they should be nourished three years; that at its end they should stand before the king.

⁵پادشاه همچنین امر کرد که هر روز از همان غذا و شرابی که به درباریان می دهند به آن ها نیز بدهند و بعد از سه سال که آن ها را تعلیم دادند به حضور پادشاه بیاورند.

⁶Now among these were, of the children of Judah, Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah.

⁶در بین افرادی که انتخاب شدند، چهار جوان از قبیلۀ یهودا به نامهای دانیال، حَنَنیا، میشائیل و عَزَریا بودند.

⁷The prince of the eunuchs gave names to them: to Daniel he gave the name of Belteshazzar; and to Hananiah, of Shadrach; and to Mishael, of Meshach; and to Azariah, of Abednego.

⁷اَشفَناز نامهای تازه ای بر آن ها گذاشت: دانیال را بِلطشزر، حَنَنیا را شَدرَک، میشائیل را مِیشَک و عَزَریا را عَبدنَغو نامید.

⁸But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the king’s dainties, nor with the wine which he drank: therefore he requested of the prince of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself.

⁸اما دانیال تصمیم گرفت با خوردن غذا و شراب دربار خود را ناپاک نسازد. به این منظور از اَشفَناز خواهش کرد که به او کمک کند.

⁹Now God made Daniel to find kindness and compassion in the sight of the prince of the eunuchs.

⁹خداوند، دانیال را در نظر اَشفَناز عزیز و محترم ساخت.

¹⁰The prince of the eunuchs said to Daniel, I fear my lord the king, who has appointed your food and your drink: for why should he see your faces worse looking than the youths who are of your own age? so would you endanger my head with the king.

¹⁰اما اَشفَناز که از پادشاه می ترسید، به دانیال گفت: «پادشاه خوراک شما را تعیین کرده است. اگر شما از سایر جوانان ضعیفتر بشوید، ممکن است پادشاه مرا بکشد.»

¹¹Then Daniel said to the steward whom the prince of the eunuchs had appointed over Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah:

¹¹پس دانیال به نگهبانی که اَشفَناز او را مسئول دانیال و حَنَنیا و میشائیل و عَزریا کرده بود گفت:

¹²Test your servants, I beg you, ten days; and let them give us vegetables to eat, and water to drink.

¹²«تو، ما را ده روز امتحان کن و به ما، بجای خوراک، سبزیجات و به عوض شراب، آب بده.

¹³Then let our faces be looked on before you, and the face of the youths who eat of the king’s dainties; and as you see, deal with your servants.

¹³بعد از آن ما را با آن افرادی که از غذای دربار می خورند مقایسه کن و آن وقت هر طور که می خواهی در بارۀ ما تصمیم بگیر.»

¹⁴So he listened to them in this matter, and proved them ten days.

¹⁴او قبول کرد که ده روز آن ها را امتحان کند.

¹⁵At the end of ten days their faces appeared fairer, and they were fatter in flesh, than all the youths who ate of the king’s dainties.

¹⁵بعد از اینکه ده روز تمام شد، دید که اینها نسبت به کسانی که از خوراک دربار می خورند سالم تر و بمراتب قوی تر شده اند.

¹⁶So the steward took away their dainties, and the wine that they should drink, and gave them pulse.

¹⁶پس نگهبان به آن ها اجازه داد که بعد از آن بجای خوراکی که پادشاه تعیین کرده است، سبزیجات بخورند.

¹⁷Now as for these four youths, God gave them knowledge and skill in all learning and wisdom: and Daniel had understanding in all visions and dreams.

¹⁷خدا به این چهار نفر در علم و حکمت، هوش و مهارت بخشید و دانیال در تعبیر خواب ها و رؤیاها بسیار دانا و ماهر شد.

¹⁸At the end of the days which the king had appointed for bringing them in, the prince of the eunuchs brought them in before Nebuchadnezzar.

¹⁸بعد از پایان سه سالی که پادشاه معین کرده بود، اَشفَناز همۀ آن جوانان را به حضور نبوکدنصر آورد.

¹⁹The king talked with them; and among them all was found none like Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah: therefore stood they before the king.

¹⁹پادشاه با همۀ آن ها صحبت کرد، اما در بین آن ها هیچ کس مانند دانیال و حَنَنیا و میشائیل و عَزریا نبود. پس آن ها به خدمت پادشاه مشغول شدند.

²⁰In every matter of wisdom and understanding, concerning which the king inquired of them, he found them ten times better than all the magicians and enchanters who were in all his realm.

²⁰در مورد همۀ مسائل و مشکلاتی که پادشاه از آن ها می پرسید، آن ها ده برابر بهتر از دانشمندان بودند.دانیال تا سال اول پادشاهی کورش کبیر در خدمت او بود.

²¹Daniel continued even to the first year of king Cyrus.

²¹دانیال تا سال اول پادشاهی کورش کبیر در خدمت او بود.
