¹The words of the Preacher, the son of David, king in Jerusalem:

¹نویسندۀ این کتاب، پسر داود است که در اورشلیم سلطنت می کرد و لقب «حکیم» به او نسبت داده شده بود.

²“Vanity of vanities,” says the Preacher; “Vanity of vanities, all is vanity.”

²حکیم می گوید: «بیهودگی است! بیهودگی است! همه چیز بیهوده است!»

³What does man gain from all his labor in which he labors under the sun?

³از اینهمه رنج و زحمتی که انسان در روی زمین می کشد چه فایده می بیند؟

⁴One generation goes, and another generation comes; but the earth remains forever.

⁴یک نسل می آید و نسل دیگری می رود، اما دنیا همیشه بحال خود باقی می ماند.

⁵The sun also rises, and the sun goes down, and hurries to its place where it rises.

⁵آفتاب طلوع و غروب می کند و باز بجائی می شتابد تا دوباره از آنجا طلوع کند.

⁶The wind goes toward the south, and turns around to the north. It turns around continually as it goes, and the wind returns again to its courses.

⁶باد به سمت جنوب و شمال می وزد و به هر طرف دوران می کند و باز به مدار خود بر می گردد.

⁷All the rivers run into the sea, yet the sea is not full. To the place where the rivers flow, there they flow again.

⁷همه دریاها در بحر می ریزند، اما بحر باز هم پُر نمی شود. آب به سرچشمه ای که دریا از آن جاری می شود باز می گردد و دوران دوباره آغاز می یابد.

⁸All things are full of weariness beyond uttering. The eye is not satisfied with seeing, nor the ear filled with hearing.

⁸همه چیز آنقدر خسته کن است که زبان از بیان آن عاجز است. هر قدر ببینیم و هر قدر بشنویم باز هم قانع نمی شویم.

⁹That which has been is that which shall be; and that which has been done is that which shall be done: and there is no new thing under the sun.

⁹در حقیقت تاریخ تکرار می شود، یعنی آنچه را که می بینیم بارها در گذشته اتفاق افتاده است. در جهان واقعاً چیز نو و تازه ای دیده نمی شود.

¹⁰Is there a thing of which it may be said, “Behold, this is new?” It has been long ago, in the ages which were before us.

¹⁰آیا کدام چیز تازه ای را نشان داده می توانید؟ هر چیزی قبلاً و پیش از آنکه ما بدنیا بیائیم وجود داشته است.

¹¹There is no memory of the former; neither shall there be any memory of the latter that are to come, among those that shall come after.

¹¹از احوال گذشتگان و پیشینیان کسی خبر ندارد و همچنین دربارۀ نسل آینده، کسانی که بعد از آن ها بدنیا می آیند چیزی نخواهند دانست.

¹²I, the Preacher, was king over Israel in Jerusalem.

¹²من، حکیم، پادشاه اسرائیل در اورشلیم بوده ام.

¹³I applied my heart to seek and to search out by wisdom concerning all that is done under the sky. It is a heavy burden that God The Hebrew word rendered “God” is “Elohim.” has given to the sons of men to be afflicted with.

¹³من خواستم تا دربارۀ هر چیز این دنیا تحقیق نموده معلوماتی حاصل کنم. خدا بار زحمت را بدوش انسان نهاده است.

¹⁴I have seen all the works that are done under the sun; and behold, all is vanity and a chasing after wind.

¹⁴همه کارهای این دنیا را تجربه کرده ام و به این نتیجه رسیدم که همه پوچ و بیهوده و باد را دنبال کردن است.

¹⁵That which is crooked can’t be made straight; and that which is lacking can’t be counted.

¹⁵چیز کج را نمی توان راست کرد و چیزی را که وجود ندارد، نمی توان شمرد.

¹⁶I said to myself, “Behold, I have obtained for myself great wisdom above all who were before me in Jerusalem. Yes, my heart has had great experience of wisdom and knowledge.”

¹⁶بخود گفتم: «من حکمت و معرفت زیادی اندوختم و بیشتر از همه کسانی که قبل از من در اورشلیم حکومت می کردند، علم و دانش کسب کردم.»

¹⁷I applied my heart to know wisdom, and to know madness and folly. I perceived that this also was a chasing after wind.

¹⁷تصمیم گرفتم که فرق بین حکمت و جهالت را بدانم، اما پی بردم که این کار هم مثل دویدن بدنبال باد، بیهوده است،زیرا کثرتِ حکمت غم افزا است و هر که به دانش خود بیفزاید، اندوه خود را زیاد می کند.

¹⁸For in much wisdom is much grief; and he who increases knowledge increases sorrow.

¹⁸زیرا کثرتِ حکمت غم افزا است و هر که به دانش خود بیفزاید، اندوه خود را زیاد می کند.
