¹Now when these things were done, the princes drew near to me, saying, “The people of Israel, and the priests and the Levites, have not separated themselves from the peoples of the lands, following their abominations, even those of the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Jebusites, the Ammonites, the Moabites, the Egyptians, and the Amorites.

¹بعد از آن، رهبران قوم یهود آمده به من گفتند که مردم و کاهنان و لاویان از اقوام همسایه، یعنی مردم آمون، موآب، مصر و همچنان از کنعانیان، حِتیان، فرزیان، یبوسیان و اموریان خود را جدا نمی کنند. آن ها از کارهای ناشایست این مردم پیروی می نمایند

²For they have taken of their daughters for themselves and for their sons, so that the holy seed have mixed themselves with the peoples of the lands. Yes, the hand of the princes and rulers has been chief in this trespass.”

²و مردان یهودی با زنان بیگانه ازدواج می کنند و در نتیجه، قوم برگزیدۀ خدا آلوده می شود. رهبران و بزرگان قوم بیش از همه در این امر مقصرند.

³When I heard this thing, I tore my garment and my robe, and plucked off the hair of my head and of my beard, and sat down confounded.

³وقتی این را شنیدم از شدت غم لباس خویش را دریدم، موهای سر و روی خود را کندم و از شدت غم و ناراحتی بر زمین افتادم.

⁴Then were assembled to me everyone who trembled at the words of the God of Israel, because of their trespass of the captivity; and I sat confounded until the evening offering.

⁴تا وقت قربانی شامگاهی همانطور در آنجا در حالت اندوه و ماتم باقی ماندم، و مردم بتدریج اطراف من جمع شدند ـ مخصوصاً کسانی که گفتار خدای اسرائیل را در مورد گناه تبعید شدگان بخاطر داشتند.

⁵At the evening offering I arose up from my humiliation, even with my garment and my robe torn; and I fell on my knees, and spread out my hands to Yahweh my God;

⁵موقع قربانی شامگاهی در حالیکه هنوز لباس پاره شده بر تنم بود، از جائی که با غم و اندوه افتاده بودم، برخاستم. زانو زدم و دستهای خود را برای دعا به سوی خداوند، خدای خود بلند کردم،

⁶and I said, “My God, I am ashamed and blush to lift up my face to you, my God; for our iniquities have increased over our head, and our guiltiness has grown up to the heavens.

⁶و گفتم: «ای خدا، آنقدر شرمگین هستم که نمی توانم سر خود را در حضور تو بلند کنم. گناهان ما بالای هم انباشته شده و از سر ما نیز گذشته است و به آسمان ها می رسد.

⁷Since the days of our fathers we have been exceeding guilty to this day; and for our iniquities we, our kings, and our priests, have been delivered into the hand of the kings of the lands, to the sword, to captivity, to plunder, and to confusion of face, as it is this day.

⁷از دوران اجداد ما تا به امروز ما، یعنی قوم برگزیدۀ تو، گناهان فراوانی را مرتکب شده ایم. بخاطر گناهان ما، پادشاهان و کاهنان و خود ما به دست پادشاهان بیگانه اسیر شده ایم. آن ها ما را کشتند، اموال ما را ربودند و خود ما را نیز به غلامی گرفتند. بی حرمت شده ایم و رسوائی ما تا به امروز باقی مانده است.

⁸Now for a little moment grace has been shown from Yahweh our God, to leave us a remnant to escape, and to give us a nail in his holy place, that our God may lighten our eyes, and give us a little reviving in our bondage.

⁸اکنون برای مدتی به ما لطف کرده ای تا عده ای از ما از اسارت خلاص شویم و در این محل مقدس در آسودگی زندگی کنیم. تو ای خداوند، ما را برای مدتی کوتاه به اینجا آوردی تا دل و دیدۀ ما روشن گردد و نیروی تازه کسب کنیم.

⁹For we are bondservants; yet our God has not forsaken us in our bondage, but has extended loving kindness to us in the sight of the kings of Persia, to give us a reviving, to set up the house of our God, and to repair its ruins, and to give us a wall in Judah and in Jerusalem.

⁹هرچند ما غلام بودیم، ولی تو ما را در حالت غلامی ترک نمی کنی، تو باعث شدی تا مورد لطف پادشاهان فارس قرار گیریم، و به ما اجازه دهند که به زندگی خود ادامه بدهیم و عبادتگاه تو را که ویران شده بود دوباره آباد کنیم، و در اینجا، در یهودیه و اورشلیم، در امان باشیم.

¹⁰“Now, our God, what shall we say after this? For we have forsaken your commandments,

¹⁰اما بعد از آنچه اکنون اتفاق افتاده دیگر چه می توانیم بگوئیم؟ ما باز هم از احکام تو، ای خدا،

¹¹which you have commanded by your servants the prophets, saying, ‘The land, to which you go to possess it, is an unclean land through the uncleanness of the peoples of the lands, through their abominations, which have filled it from one end to another with their filthiness.

¹¹که بوسیلۀ خادمین خود، انبیاء به ما داده ای تمرد کرده ایم. آن ها به ما گفتند که این سرزمین و این جائی که ما تصرف خواهیم کرد، بوسیله اعمال ناشایست و قبیح مردمی که در سرتاسر آن سکونت دارند، نجس شده است.

¹²Now therefore don’t give your daughters to their sons, neither take their daughters to your sons, nor seek their peace or their prosperity forever; that you may be strong, and eat the good of the land, and leave it for an inheritance to your children forever.’

¹²آن ها به ما گفتند که اگر بخواهیم در این سرزمین قوی باشیم و از محصولات آن بهره برداریم و آن را تا ابد به فرزندان خود به ارث بگذاریم، نباید هیچ وقت با این مردم ازدواج نمائیم یا کاری کنیم که باعث موفقیت و سعادت آن ها شود.

¹³“After all that has come on us for our evil deeds, and for our great guilt, since you, our God, have punished us less than our iniquities deserve, and have given us such a remnant,

¹³حتی بعد از آنهمه مجازات و سختی که بخاطر گناهان و خطایای خود متحمل شده ایم، ما می دانیم که تو، ای خدا، ما را کمتر از آنچه سزاوار بودیم تنبیه کرده ای و به ما رهائی بخشیده ای.

¹⁴shall we again break your commandments, and join in affinity with the peoples that do these abominations? Wouldn’t you be angry with us until you had consumed us, so that there should be no remnant, nor any to escape?

¹⁴چگونه ممکن است بازهم فرمان تو را نادیده بگیریم و با این مردمان شریر ازدواج کنیم؟ آیا تو قهر نخواهی شد و ما را تا آخرین نفر از بین نخواهی برد؟ای خداوند، خدای اسرائیل، تو عادلی، ولی باز هم اجازه داده ای ما زنده بمانیم. ما به گناهان خود در حضور تو اعتراف می کنیم و می دانیم که اصلاً لیاقت آنرا نداریم که به حضور تو بیائیم.»

¹⁵Yahweh, the God of Israel, you are righteous; for we are left a remnant that has escaped, as it is this day. Behold, we are before you in our guiltiness; for none can stand before you because of this.”

¹⁵ای خداوند، خدای اسرائیل، تو عادلی، ولی باز هم اجازه داده ای ما زنده بمانیم. ما به گناهان خود در حضور تو اعتراف می کنیم و می دانیم که اصلاً لیاقت آنرا نداریم که به حضور تو بیائیم.»
