1It happened in the month Nisan, in the twentieth year of Artaxerxes the king, when wine was before him, that I took up the wine, and gave it to the king. Now I had not been sad before in his presence.
1چهار ماه بعد، یک روز وقتی جام شراب را به دست اُردشیر پادشاه می دادم، از من پرسید: «چرا اینقدر غمگینی؟ گمان نمی کنم که بیمار باشی، پس حتماً چیزی هست که فکر ترا پریشان ساخته است.» (تا آن روز پادشاه هرگز مرا غمگین ندیده بود.) از این سؤال او بسیار ترسیدم،
2The king said to me, “Why is your face sad, since you are not sick? This is nothing else but sorrow of heart.” Then I was very much afraid.
2ولی در جواب گفتم: «پادشاه تا ابد زنده بماند! وقتی شهری که اجدادم در آن دفن شده اند، ویران گردیده و تمام دروازه هایش سوخته باشد، من چطور می توانم غمگین نباشم؟»
3I said to the king, “Let the king live forever! Why shouldn’t my face be sad, when the city, the place of my fathers’ tombs, lies waste, and its gates have been consumed with fire?”
3پادشاه پرسید: «درخواستت چیست؟» بعد از آنکه بحضور خدای آسمان ها دعا کردم،
4Then the king said to me, “For what do you make request?” So I prayed to the God of heaven.
4جواب دادم: «اگر پادشاه بخواهند و اگر نظر لطف به من داشته باشند، مرا به سرزمین یهودا بفرستند تا شهر اجدادم را دوباره آباد کنم.»
5I said to the king, “If it pleases the king, and if your servant has found favor in your sight, that you would send me to Judah, to the city of my fathers’ tombs, that I may build it.”
5پادشاه درحالیکه ملکه در کنار او نشسته بود، با رفتنم موافقت کرده پرسید: «سفرت چقدر طول خواهد کشید و چه وقت مراجعت خواهی کرد؟» من هم زمانی را برای بازگشت خود تعیین کردم.
6The king said to me (the queen was also sitting by him), “For how long shall your journey be? And when will you return?” So it pleased the king to send me; and I set him a time.
6سپس به پادشاه گفتم: «اگر پادشاه صلاح بدانند، برای حاکمان منطقۀ غرب دریای فرات نامه بنویسند و سفارش مرا به آن ها بکنند تا اجازه بدهند که از آن منطقه عبور کنم و به سرزمین یهودا برسم.
7Moreover I said to the king, “If it pleases the king, let letters be given me to the governors beyond the River, that they may let me pass through until I come to Judah;
7یک نامه هم برای آساف، مسئول جنگلهای سلطنتی بنویسند و به او امر فرمایند تا برای ساختن مجدد دروازه های قلعۀ کنار عبادتگاه خدا و دیوار اورشلیم و خانۀ خودم، به من چوب مورد ضرورت را بدهد.» پادشاه تمام درخواستهای مرا قبول کرد، زیرا دست مهربان خدا بر من بود.
8and a letter to Asaph the keeper of the king’s forest, that he may give me timber to make beams for the gates of the citadel by the temple, for the wall of the city, and for the house that I shall enter into.” The king granted my requests, because of the good hand of my God on me.
8وقتی به منطقۀ غرب دریای فرات رسیدم، نامه های پادشاه را به حاکمان آنجا دادم. (این را هم باید اضافه کنم که پادشاه برای حفظ جانم، چند فرماندۀ سپاه و عده ای از سوارکاران نظامی را همراه من فرستاده بود.)
9Then I came to the governors beyond the River, and gave them the king’s letters. Now the king had sent with me captains of the army and horsemen.
9ولی وقتی سَنبَلَط (از اهالی حورون) و طوبیا (یکی از مأمورین عَمونی) از آمدن من اطلاع یافتند، بسیار متأثر شدند، چون دیدند کسی پیدا شده که می خواهد به قوم اسرائیل کمک کند.
10When Sanballat the Horonite, and Tobiah the servant, the Ammonite, heard of it, it grieved them exceedingly, because a man had come to seek the welfare of the children of Israel.
10من به اورشلیم رفتم و تا سه روز در مورد نقشه هائی که خداوند دربارۀ اورشلیم در سرم نهاده بود با کسی حرف نزدم. سپس یک شب، چند نفر را با خود گرفته از شهر خارج شدم. من بر الاغ سوار بودم و دیگران پیاده می رفتند.
11So I came to Jerusalem, and was there three days.
11از «دروازۀ دره» خارج شدم و بطرف «چشمۀ اژدها» و از آنجا تا «دروازۀ خاکروبه» رفتم و دیوار خراب شدۀ اورشلیم و دروازه های سوختۀ آن را از نزدیک دیدم.
12I arose in the night, I and some few men with me; neither told I any man what my God put into my heart to do for Jerusalem; neither was there any animal with me, except the animal that I rode on.
12سپس به «دروازۀ چشمه» و «حوض پادشاه» رسیدم، اما الاغ من نتوانست از بین خرابه بگذرد.
13I went out by night by the valley gate, even toward the jackal’s well, and to the dung gate, and viewed the walls of Jerusalem, which were broken down, and its gates were consumed with fire.
13پس بطرف درۀ قِدرون رفتم و از کنار دره، دیوار شهر را بازرسی کردم. بعد از راهی که آمده بودم بازگشتم و از «دروازۀ دره» داخل شهر شدم.
14Then I went on to the spring gate and to the king’s pool: but there was no place for the animal that was under me to pass.
14مقامات شهر نفهمیدند که من به کجا و برای چه منظوری بیرون رفته بودم، زیرا تا آن موقع دربارۀ نقشه هایم به کسی چیزی نگفته بودم. یهودیان اعم از کاهنان، رهبران، بزرگان و حتی کسانی که باید در این کار شرکت کنند، از نقشه هایم بی اطلاع بودند.
15Then went I up in the night by the brook, and viewed the wall; and I turned back, and entered by the valley gate, and so returned.
15آنگاه به آن ها گفتم: «شما خوب می دانید که چه بلائی بر سر شهر ما آمده است. شهر ویران شده و دروازه هایش سوخته اند. بیائید دیوار را دوباره آباد کنیم و خود را از این رسوائی آزاد سازیم!»
16The rulers didn’t know where I went, or what I did; neither had I as yet told it to the Jews, nor to the priests, nor to the nobles, nor to the rulers, nor to the rest who did the work.
16سپس به آن ها گفتم که چه گفتگوئی با پادشاه داشته ام و چگونه دست خدا در این کار بوده و به من یاری کرده است. آن ها جواب دادند: «پس باید دست به کار شویم و دیوار را آباد کنیم!» به این ترتیب، آمادۀ این کار نیک شدند.
17Then I said to them, “You see the evil case that we are in, how Jerusalem lies waste, and its gates are burned with fire. Come, let us build up the wall of Jerusalem, that we won’t be disgraced.”
17ولی وقتی سَنبَلَط، طوبیا و جَشَمِ عرب از نقشۀ ما خبر شدند، ما را مسخره و تحقیر کردند و گفتند: «چه می کنید؟ آیا خیال دارید که علیه پادشاه شورش کنید؟»من جواب دادم: «خدای آسمان ها، ما را که بندگان او هستیم یاری می کند تا این دیوار را دوباره آباد کنیم. اما شما حق ندارید که در امور شهر اورشلیم دخالت نمائید، زیرا شما هیچ حقی در ملکیت اورشلیم ندارید و در تاریخ آن سهیم نیستید.»
18I told them of the hand of my God which was good on me, as also of the king’s words that he had spoken to me. They said, “Let’s rise up and build.” So they strengthened their hands for the good work.
18من جواب دادم: «خدای آسمان ها، ما را که بندگان او هستیم یاری می کند تا این دیوار را دوباره آباد کنیم. اما شما حق ندارید که در امور شهر اورشلیم دخالت نمائید، زیرا شما هیچ حقی در ملکیت اورشلیم ندارید و در تاریخ آن سهیم نیستید.»
19But when Sanballat the Horonite, and Tobiah the servant, the Ammonite, and Geshem the Arabian, heard it, they ridiculed us, and despised us, and said, “What is this thing that you are doing? Will you rebel against the king?”
20Then answered I them, and said to them, “The God of heaven will prosper us. Therefore we, his servants, will arise and build; but you have no portion, nor right, nor memorial, in Jerusalem.”
