1But it happened that when Sanballat heard that we were building the wall, he was angry, and took great indignation, and mocked the Jews.

2He spoke before his brothers and the army of Samaria, and said, “What are these feeble Jews doing? Will they fortify themselves? Will they sacrifice? Will they finish in a day? Will they revive the stones out of the heaps of rubbish, since they are burned?”

3Now Tobiah the Ammonite was by him, and he said, “What they are building, if a fox climbed up it, he would break down their stone wall.”

4“Hear, our God; for we are despised; and turn back their reproach on their own head, give them up for a spoil in a land of captivity;

5don’t cover their iniquity, and don’t let their sin be blotted out from before you; for they have insulted the builders.”
5(H3:37)Älä anna anteeksi heidän rikoksiaan äläkä unohda heidän syntejään, sillä he ovat loukanneet rakentajia!
6So we built the wall; and all the wall was joined together to half its height: for the people had a mind to work.
6(H3:38)Me jatkoimme rakentamista. Muuri oli jo koko pituudeltaan puolessa korkeudessa, ja siitä kansa sai intoa työhön.
7But it happened that when Sanballat, Tobiah, the Arabians, the Ammonites, and the Ashdodites heard that the repairing of the walls of Jerusalem went forward, and that the breaches began to be filled, then they were very angry;
7(H4:1)Mutta kun Sanballat ja Tobia ja arabialaiset, ammonilaiset ja asdodilaiset saivat kuulla, että Jerusalemin muurien korjaaminen edistyi ja aukot niissä alkoivat täyttyä, he vimmastuivat.
8and they conspired all of them together to come and fight against Jerusalem, and to cause confusion therein.

9But we made our prayer to our God, and set a watch against them day and night, because of them.
9(H4:3)Me rukoilimme Jumalaa ja asetimme vartijoita, jotka yötä päivää vartioivat kaupunkia, ettei vihollinen pääsisi yllättämään.
10Judah said, “The strength of the bearers of burdens is fading, and there is much rubbish; so that we are not able to build the wall.”
10(H4:4)Mutta koko Juudan heimo valitti: -- Kantajien voimat uupuvat, niin paljon on soraa raivattava pois. Me emme jaksa rakentaa muuria valmiiksi.
11Our adversaries said, “They shall not know, neither see, until we come into their midst, and kill them, and cause the work to cease.”
11(H4:5)Meidän vastustajamme puhuivat: "Kaupungin asukkaat eivät saa aavistaa mitään, ennen kuin jo olemme heidän keskellään. Sitten tapamme heidät ja teemme lopun heidän työnteostaan."
12It happened that when the Jews who lived by them came, they said to us ten times from all places, “Wherever you turn, they will attack us.”
12(H4:6)Mutta luoksemme tuli heidän lähistöllään asuvia heimolaisiamme, ja me kuulimme heiltä yhä uudelleen suunnitelmista, joita viholliset hautoivat meitä vastaan.
13Therefore set I in the lowest parts of the space behind the wall, in the open places, I set the people after their families with their swords, their spears, and their bows.
13(H4:7)Silloin sijoitin keihäsmiehiä kohtiin, joissa muuri ei vielä antanut suojaa, ja asetin kansan suvuittain asemiin miekkoineen, keihäineen ja jousineen.
14I looked, and rose up, and said to the nobles, and to the rulers, and to the rest of the people, “Don’t be afraid of them! Remember the Lord, who is great and awesome, and fight for your brothers, your sons, and your daughters, your wives, and your houses.”
14(H4:8)Tarkastettuani kaiken astuin esiin ja sanoin ylimyksille, johtomiehille ja muulle kansalle: "Älkää pelätkö vihollisia! Muistakaa Herraa, joka on suuri ja pelättävä. Taistelkaa veljienne, poikienne ja tyttärienne, vaimojenne ja kotienne puolesta."
15It happened, when our enemies heard that it was known to us, and God had brought their counsel to nothing, that we returned all of us to the wall, everyone to his work.
15(H4:9)Vihollisemme saivat kuulla, että heidän suunnitelmansa oli tullut meidän tietoomme. Näin Jumala oli tehnyt heidän aikeensa tyhjäksi, ja me palasimme kaikki muurille, kukin omaan työhönsä.
16It happened from that time forth, that half of my servants worked in the work, and half of them held the spears, the shields, and the bows, and the coats of mail; and the rulers were behind all the house of Judah.
16(H4:10)Tästä päivästä lähtien vain puolet miehistäni oli työssä, toinen puoli oli varustautunut keihäin, kilvin, jousin ja haarniskoin. Päälliköt olivat Juudan kansan tukena,
17They all built the wall and those who bore burdens loaded themselves; everyone with one of his hands worked in the work, and with the other held his weapon;
17(H4:11)kun se rakensi muuria. Taakkojen kantajat työskentelivät vain toisella kädellä, toisessa he pitivät keihästä.
18and the builders, everyone wore his sword at his side, and so built. He who sounded the trumpet was by me.
18(H4:12)Rakentajilla oli työn aikana miekka vyöllä. Minun vierelläni kulki torvenpuhaltaja.
19I said to the nobles, and to the rulers and to the rest of the people, “The work is great and large, and we are separated on the wall, one far from another.
19(H4:13)Sanoin ylimyksille, johtomiehille ja muulle kansalle: "Meidän työmaamme on laaja, ja me olemme hajallamme pitkin muuria, kaukana toisistamme.
20Wherever you hear the sound of the trumpet, rally there to us. Our God will fight for us.”
20(H4:14)Kun kuulette joltakin suunnalta torven äänen, kokoontukaa sinne meidän luoksemme. Jumala sotii puolestamme."
21So we worked in the work: and half of them held the spears from the rising of the morning until the stars appeared.
21(H4:15)Näin me jatkoimme työtä aamun koitosta siihen asti, kun tähdet syttyivät taivaalle, ja puolet väestä seisoi vartiossa ase kädessä.
22Likewise at the same time said I to the people, “Let everyone with his servant lodge within Jerusalem, that in the night they may be a guard to us, and may labor in the day.”
22(H4:16)Annoin kansalle myös määräyksen, että jokaisen miehen oli palvelijansa kanssa yövyttävä Jerusalemissa, jotta he voisivat yöllä olla vartiossa ja päivällä tehdä työtä.
23So neither I, nor my brothers, nor my servants, nor the men of the guard who followed me, none of us took off our clothes. Everyone took his weapon to the water.
23(H4:17)En minä itse eivätkä veljeni, eivät palvelijani eivätkä mukanani kulkevat vartiomiehet, ei kukaan meistä riisunut vaatteitaan. Jokaisella oli ase valmiina.
