¹Elijah the Tishbite, who was of the foreigners of Gilead, said to Ahab, “As Yahweh, the God of Israel, lives, before whom I stand, there shall not be dew nor rain these years, but according to my word.”

¹ギレアデのテシベに住むテシベびとエリヤはアハブに言った、「わたしの仕えているイスラエルの神、主は生きておられます。わたしの言葉のないうちは、数年雨も露もないでしょう」。

²The word of Yahweh came to him, saying,

²主の言葉がエリヤに臨んだ、

³“Go away from here, turn eastward, and hide yourself by the brook Cherith, that is before the Jordan.

³「ここを去って東におもむき、ヨルダンの東にあるケリテ川のほとりに身を隠しなさい。

⁴It shall be, that you shall drink of the brook. I have commanded the ravens to feed you there.”

⁴そしてその川の水を飲みなさい。わたしはからすに命じて、そこであなたを養わせよう」。

⁵So he went and did according to the word of Yahweh; for he went and lived by the brook Cherith, that is before the Jordan.

⁵エリヤは行って、主の言葉のとおりにした。すなわち行って、ヨルダンの東にあるケリテ川のほとりに住んだ。

⁶The ravens brought him bread and flesh in the morning, and bread and flesh in the evening; and he drank of the brook.

⁶すると、からすが朝ごとに彼の所にパンと肉を運び、また夕ごとにパンと肉を運んできた。そして彼はその川の水を飲んだ。

⁷It happened after a while, that the brook dried up, because there was no rain in the land.

⁷しかし国に雨がなかったので、しばらくしてその川はかれた。

⁸The word of Yahweh came to him, saying,

⁸その時、主の言葉が彼に臨んで言った、

⁹“Arise, go to Zarephath, which belongs to Sidon, and stay there. Behold, I have commanded a widow there to sustain you.”

⁹「立ってシドンに属するザレパテへ行って、そこに住みなさい。わたしはそのところのやもめ女に命じてあなたを養わせよう」。

¹⁰So he arose and went to Zarephath; and when he came to the gate of the city, behold, a widow was there gathering sticks: and he called to her, and said, “Please get me a little water in a vessel, that I may drink.”

¹⁰そこで彼は立ってザレパテへ行ったが、町の門に着いたとき、ひとりのやもめ女が、その所でたきぎを拾っていた。彼はその女に声をかけて言った、「器に水を少し持ってきて、わたしに飲ませてください」。

¹¹As she was going to get it, he called to her, and said, “Please bring me a morsel of bread in your hand.”

¹¹彼女が行って、それを持ってこようとした時、彼は彼女を呼んで言った、「手に一口のパンを持ってきてください」。

¹²She said, “As Yahweh your God lives, I don’t have a cake, but a handful of meal in the jar, and a little oil in the jar. Behold, I am gathering two sticks, that I may go in and bake it for me and my son, that we may eat it, and die.”

¹²彼女は言った、「あなたの神、主は生きておられます。わたしにはパンはありません。ただ、かめに一握りの粉と、びんに少しの油があるだけです。今わたしはたきぎ二、三本を拾い、うちへ帰って、わたしと子供のためにそれを調理し、それを食べて死のうとしているのです」。

¹³Elijah said to her, “Don’t be afraid. Go and do as you have said; but make me of it a little cake first, and bring it out to me, and afterward make some for you and for your son.

¹³エリヤは彼女に言った、「恐れるにはおよばない。行って、あなたが言ったとおりにしなさい。しかしまず、それでわたしのために小さいパンを、一つ作って持ってきなさい。その後、あなたと、あなたの子供のために作りなさい。

¹⁴For thus says Yahweh, the God of Israel, ‘The jar of meal shall not empty, neither shall the jar of oil fail, until the day that Yahweh sends rain on the earth.’”

¹⁴『主が雨を地のおもてに降らす日まで、かめの粉は尽きず、びんの油は絶えない』とイスラエルの神、主が言われるからです」。

¹⁵She went and did according to the saying of Elijah: and she, and he, and her house, ate many days.

¹⁵彼女は行って、エリヤが言ったとおりにした。彼女と彼および彼女の家族は久しく食べた。

¹⁶The jar of meal didn’t empty, neither did the jar of oil fail, according to the word of Yahweh, which he spoke by Elijah.

¹⁶主がエリヤによって言われた言葉のように、かめの粉は尽きず、びんの油は絶えなかった。

¹⁷It happened after these things, that the son of the woman, the mistress of the house, fell sick; and his sickness was so severe, that there was no breath left in him.

¹⁷これらの事の後、その家の主婦であるこの女の男の子が病気になった。その病気はたいそう重く、息が絶えたので、

¹⁸She said to Elijah, “What have I to do with you, you man of God? You have come to me to bring my sin to memory, and to kill my son!”

¹⁸彼女はエリヤに言った、「神の人よ、あなたはわたしに、何の恨みがあるのですか。あなたはわたしの罪を思い出させるため、またわたしの子を死なせるためにおいでになったのですか」。

¹⁹He said to her, “Give me your son.” He took him out of her bosom, and carried him up into the room where he stayed, and laid him on his own bed.

¹⁹エリヤは彼女に言った、「子をわたしによこしなさい」。そして彼女のふところから子供を取り、自分のいる屋上のへやへかかえて上り、自分の寝台に寝かせ、

²⁰He cried to Yahweh, and said, “Yahweh my God, have you also brought evil on the widow with whom I stay, by killing her son?”

²⁰主に呼ばわって言った、「わが神、主よ、あなたはわたしが宿っている家のやもめにさえ災をくだして、子供を殺されるのですか」。

²¹He stretched himself on the child three times, and cried to Yahweh, and said, “Yahweh my God, please let this child’s soul come into him again.”

²¹そして三度その子供の上に身を伸ばし、主に呼ばわって言った、「わが神、主よ、この子供の魂をもとに帰らせてください」。

²²Yahweh listened to the voice of Elijah; and the soul of the child came into him again, and he revived.

²²主はエリヤの声を聞きいれられたので、その子供の魂はもとに帰って、彼は生きかえった。

²³Elijah took the child, and brought him down out of the room into the house, and delivered him to his mother; and Elijah said, “Behold, your son lives.”

²³エリヤはその子供を取って屋上のへやから家の中につれて降り、その母にわたして言った、「ごらんなさい。あなたの子は生きかえりました」。女はエリヤに言った、「今わたしはあなたが神の人であることと、あなたの口にある主の言葉が真実であることを知りました」。

²⁴The woman said to Elijah, “Now I know that you are a man of God, and that the word of Yahweh in your mouth is truth.”

²⁴女はエリヤに言った、「今わたしはあなたが神の人であることと、あなたの口にある主の言葉が真実であることを知りました」。
