¹Now there cried a certain woman of the wives of the sons of the prophets to Elisha, saying, “Your servant my husband is dead. You know that your servant feared Yahweh. Now the creditor has come to take for himself my two children to be slaves.”

¹預言者のともがらの、ひとりの妻がエリシャに呼ばわって言った、「あなたのしもべであるわたしの夫が死にました。ごぞんじのように、あなたのしもべは主を恐れる者でありましたが、今、債主がきて、わたしのふたりの子供を取って奴隷にしようとしているのです」。

²Elisha said to her, “What shall I do for you? Tell me: what do you have in the house?” She said, “Your handmaid has nothing in the house, except a pot of oil.”

²エリシャは彼女に言った、「あなたのために何をしましょうか。あなたの家にどんな物があるか、言いなさい」。彼女は言った、「一びんの油のほかは、はしための家に何もありません」。

³Then he said, “Go, borrow containers from of all your neighbors, even empty containers. Don’t borrow just a few.

³彼は言った、「ほかへ行って、隣の人々から器を借りなさい。あいた器を借りなさい。少しばかりではいけません。

⁴You shall go in, and shut the door on you and on your sons, and pour out into all those containers; and you shall set aside that which is full.”

⁴そして内にはいって、あなたの子供たちと一緒に戸の内に閉じこもり、そのすべての器に油をついで、いっぱいになったとき、一つずつそれを取りのけておきなさい」。

⁵So she went from him, and shut the door on her and on her sons; they brought the containers to her, and she poured out.

⁵彼女は彼を離れて去り、子供たちと一緒に戸の内に閉じこもり、子供たちの持って来る器に油をついだ。

⁶It happened, when the containers were full, that she said to her son, “Bring me another container.” He said to her, “There isn’t another container.” The oil stopped flowing.

⁶油が満ちたとき、彼女は子供に「もっと器を持ってきなさい」と言ったが、子供が「器はもうありません」と言ったので、油はとまった。

⁷Then she came and told the man of God. He said, “Go, sell the oil, and pay your debt; and you and your sons live on the rest.”

⁷そこで彼女は神の人のところにきて告げたので、彼は言った、「行って、その油を売って負債を払いなさい。あなたと、あなたの子供たちはその残りで暮すことができます」。

⁸It fell on a day, that Elisha passed to Shunem, where there was a prominent woman; and she persuaded him to eat bread. So it was, that as often as he passed by, he turned in there to eat bread.

⁸ある日エリシャはシュネムへ行ったが、そこにひとりの裕福な婦人がいて、しきりに彼に食事をすすめたので、彼はそこを通るごとに、そこに寄って食事をした。

⁹She said to her husband, “See now, I perceive that this is a holy man of God, that passes by us continually.

⁹その女は夫に言った、「いつもわたしたちの所を通るあの人は確かに神の聖なる人です。

¹⁰Please let us make a little room on the wall. Let us set for him there a bed, a table, a chair, and a lamp stand. It shall be, when he comes to us, that he shall turn in there.”

¹⁰わたしたちは屋上に壁のある一つの小さいへやを造り、そこに寝台と机といすと燭台とを彼のために備えましょう。そうすれば彼がわたしたちの所に来るとき、そこに、はいることができます」。

¹¹One day he came there, and he turned into the room and lay there.

¹¹さて、ある日エリシャはそこにきて、そのへやにはいり、そこに休んだが、

¹²He said to Gehazi his servant, “Call this Shunammite.” When he had called her, she stood before him.

¹²彼はそのしもべゲハジに「このシュネムの女を呼んできなさい」と言った。彼がその女を呼ぶと、彼女はきてエリシャの前に立ったので、

¹³He said to him, “Say now to her, ‘Behold, you have cared for us with all this care. What is to be done for you? Would you like to be spoken for to the king, or to the captain of the army?’” She answered, “I dwell among my own people.”

¹³エリシャはゲハジに言った、「彼女に言いなさい、『あなたはこんなにねんごろに、わたしたちのために心を用いられたが、あなたのためには何をしたらよいでしょうか。王または軍勢の長にあなたの事をよろしく頼むことをお望みですか』」。彼女は答えて言った、「わたしは自分の民のうちに住んでいます」。

¹⁴He said, “What then is to be done for her?” Gehazi answered, “Most certainly she has no son, and her husband is old.”

¹⁴エリシャは言った、「それでは彼女のために何をしようか」。ゲハジは言った、「彼女には子供がなく、その夫は老いています」。

¹⁵He said, “Call her.” When he had called her, she stood in the door.

¹⁵するとエリシャが「彼女を呼びなさい」と言ったので、彼女を呼ぶと、来て戸口に立った。

¹⁶He said, “At this season, when the time comes around, you will embrace a son.” She said, “No, my lord, you man of God, do not lie to your handmaid.”

¹⁶エリシャは言った、「来年の今ごろ、あなたはひとりの子を抱くでしょう」。彼女は言った、「いいえ、わが主よ、神の人よ、はしためを欺かないでください」。

¹⁷The woman conceived, and bore a son at that season, when the time came around, as Elisha had said to her.

¹⁷しかし女はついに身ごもって、エリシャが彼女に言ったように、次の年のそのころに子を産んだ。

¹⁸When the child was grown, it happened one day that he went out to his father to the reapers.

¹⁸その子が成長して、ある日、刈入れびとの所へ出ていって、父のもとへ行ったが、

¹⁹He said to his father, “My head! My head!” He said to his servant, “Carry him to his mother.”

¹⁹父にむかって「頭が、頭が」と言ったので、父はしもべに「彼を母のもとへ背負っていきなさい」と言った。

²⁰When he had taken him, and brought him to his mother, he sat on her knees until noon, and then died.

²⁰彼を背負って母のもとへ行くと、昼まで母のひざの上にすわっていたが、ついに死んだ。

²¹She went up and laid him on the bed of the man of God, and shut the door on him, and went out.

²¹母は上がっていって、これを神の人の寝台の上に置き、戸を閉じて出てきた。

²²She called to her husband, and said, “Please send me one of the servants, and one of the donkeys, that I may run to the man of God, and come again.”

²²そして夫を呼んで言った、「どうぞ、しもべひとりと、ろば一頭をわたしにかしてください。急いで神の人の所へ行って、また帰ってきます」。

²³He said, “Why would you want go to him today? It is neither new moon nor Sabbath.” She said, “It’s alright.”

²³夫は言った、「どうしてきょう彼の所へ行こうとするのか。きょうは、ついたちでもなく、安息日でもない」。彼女は言った、「よろしいのです」。

²⁴Then she saddled a donkey, and said to her servant, “Drive, and go forward! Don’t slow down for me, unless I ask you to.”

²⁴そして彼女はろばにくらを置いて、しもべに言った、「速く駆けさせなさい。わたしが命じる時でなければ、歩調をゆるめてはなりません」。

²⁵So she went, and came to the man of God to Mount Carmel. It happened, when the man of God saw her afar off, that he said to Gehazi his servant, “Behold, there is the Shunammite.

²⁵こうして彼女は出発してカルメル山へ行き、神の人の所へ行った。神の人は彼女の近づいてくるのを見て、しもべゲハジに言った、「向こうから、あのシュネムの女が来る。

²⁶Please run now to meet her, and ask her, ‘Is it well with you? Is it well with your husband? Is it well with the child?’” She answered, “It is well.”

²⁶すぐ走って行って、彼女を迎えて言いなさい、『あなたは無事ですか。あなたの夫は無事ですか。あなたの子供は無事ですか』」。彼女は答えた、「無事です」。

²⁷When she came to the man of God to the hill, she caught hold of his feet. Gehazi came near to thrust her away; but the man of God said, “Leave her alone; for her soul is troubled within her; and Yahweh has hidden it from me, and has not told me.”

²⁷ところが彼女は山にきて、神の人の所へくるとエリシャの足にすがりついた。ゲハジが彼女を追いのけようと近よった時、神の人は言った、「かまわずにおきなさい。彼女は心に苦しみがあるのだから。主はそれを隠して、まだわたしにお告げにならないのだ」。

²⁸Then she said, “Did I desire a son of my lord? Didn’t I say, Do not deceive me?”

²⁸そこで彼女は言った、「わたしがあなたに子を求めましたか。わたしを欺かないでくださいと言ったではありませんか」。

²⁹Then he said to Gehazi, “Tuck your cloak into your belt, take my staff in your hand, and go your way. If you meet any man, don’t greet him; and if anyone greets you, don’t answer him again. Then lay my staff on the face of the child.”

²⁹エリシャはゲハジに言った、「腰をひきからげ、わたしのつえを手に持って行きなさい。だれに会っても、あいさつしてはならない。またあなたにあいさつする者があっても、それに答えてはならない。わたしのつえを子供の顔の上に置きなさい」。

³⁰The mother of the child said, “As Yahweh lives, and as your soul lives, I will not leave you.” He arose, and followed her.

³⁰子供の母は言った、「主は生きておられます。あなたも生きておられます。わたしはあなたを離れません」。そこでエリシャはついに立ちあがって彼女のあとについて行った。

³¹Gehazi passed on before them, and laid the staff on the face of the child; but there was neither voice, nor hearing. Therefore he returned to meet him, and told him, saying, “The child has not awakened.”

³¹ゲハジは彼らの先に行って、つえを子供の顔の上に置いたが、なんの声もなく、生きかえったしるしもなかったので、帰ってきてエリシャに会い、彼に告げて「子供はまだ目をさましません」と言った。

³²When Elisha had come into the house, behold, the child was dead, and laid on his bed.

³²エリシャが家にはいって見ると、子供は死んで、寝台の上に横たわっていたので、

³³He went in therefore, and shut the door on them both, and prayed to Yahweh.

³³彼ははいって戸を閉じ、彼らふたりだけ内にいて主に祈った。

³⁴He went up, and lay on the child, and put his mouth on his mouth, and his eyes on his eyes, and his hands on his hands. He stretched himself on him; and the flesh of the child grew warm.

³⁴そしてエリシャが上がって子供の上に伏し、自分の口を子供の口の上に、自分の目を子供の目の上に、自分の両手を子供の両手の上にあて、その身を子供の上に伸ばしたとき、子供のからだは暖かになった。

³⁵Then he returned, and walked in the house once back and forth; and went up, and stretched himself on him. Then the child sneezed seven times, and the child opened his eyes.

³⁵こうしてエリシャは再び起きあがって、家の中をあちらこちらと歩み、また上がって、その身を子供の上に伸ばすと、子供は七たびくしゃみをして目を開いた。

³⁶He called Gehazi, and said, “Call this Shunammite!” So he called her. When she had come in to him, he said, “Take up your son.”

³⁶エリシャはただちにゲハジを呼んで、「あのシュネムの女を呼べ」と言ったので、彼女を呼んだ。彼女がはいってくるとエリシャは言った、「あなたの子供をつれて行きなさい」。

³⁷Then she went in, and fell at his feet, and bowed herself to the ground; and she took up her son, and went out.

³⁷彼女ははいってきて、エリシャの足もとに伏し、地に身をかがめた。そしてその子供を取りあげて出ていった。

³⁸Elisha came again to Gilgal. There was a famine in the land; and the sons of the prophets were sitting before him; and he said to his servant, “Set on the great pot, and boil stew for the sons of the prophets.”

³⁸エリシャはギルガルに帰ったが、その地にききんがあった。預言者のともがらが彼の前に座していたので、エリシャはそのしもべに言った、「大きなかまをすえて、預言者のともがらのために野菜の煮物をつくりなさい」。

³⁹One went out into the field to gather herbs, and found a wild vine, and gathered of it wild gourds his lap full, and came and shred them into the pot of stew; for they didn’t recognize them.

³⁹彼らのうちのひとりが畑に出ていって青物をつんだが、つる草のあるのを見て、その野うりを一包つんできて、煮物のかまの中に切り込んだ。彼らはそれが何であるかを知らなかったからである。

⁴⁰So they poured out for the men to eat. It happened, as they were eating of the stew, that they cried out, and said, “Man of God, there is death in the pot!” They could not eat of it.

⁴⁰やがてこれを盛って人々に食べさせようとしたが、彼らがその煮物を食べようとした時、叫んで、「ああ神の人よ、かまの中に、たべると死ぬものがはいっています」と言って、食べることができなかったので、

⁴¹But he said, “Then bring meal.” He cast it into the pot; and he said, “Pour out for the people, that they may eat.” There was no harm in the pot.

⁴¹エリシャは「それでは粉を持って来なさい」と言って、それをかまに投げ入れ、「盛って人々に食べさせなさい」と言った。かまの中には、なんの毒物もなくなった。

⁴²A man from Baal Shalishah came, and brought the man of God bread of the first fruits, twenty loaves of barley, and fresh ears of grain in his sack. He said, “Give to the people, that they may eat.”

⁴²その時、バアル・シャリシャから人がきて、初穂のパンと、大麦のパン二十個と、新穀一袋とを神の人のもとに持ってきたので、エリシャは「人々に与えて食べさせなさい」と言ったが、

⁴³His servant said, “What, should I set this before a hundred men?” But he said, “Give the people, that they may eat; for thus says Yahweh, ‘They will eat, and will have some left over.’”

⁴³その召使は言った、「どうしてこれを百人の前に供えるのですか」。しかし彼は言った、「人々に与えて食べさせなさい。主はこう言われる、『彼らは食べてなお余すであろう』」。そこで彼はそれを彼らの前に供えたので、彼らは食べてなお余した。主の言葉のとおりであった。

⁴⁴So he set it before them, and they ate, and left some of it, according to the word of Yahweh.
