¹Foolish Galatians, who has bewitched you not to obey the truth, before whose eyes Jesus Christ was openly set forth among you as crucified?

¹ああ、物わかりのわるいガラテヤ人よ。十字架につけられたイエス・キリストが、あなたがたの目の前に描き出されたのに、いったい、だれがあなたがたを惑わしたのか。

²I just want to learn this from you. Did you receive the Spirit by the works of the law, or by hearing of faith?

²わたしは、ただこの一つの事を、あなたがたに聞いてみたい。あなたがたが御霊を受けたのは、律法を行ったからか、それとも、聞いて信じたからか。

³Are you so foolish? Having begun in the Spirit, are you now completed in the flesh?

³あなたがたは、そんなに物わかりがわるいのか。御霊で始めたのに、今になって肉で仕上げるというのか。

⁴Did you suffer so many things in vain, if it is indeed in vain?

⁴あれほどの大きな経験をしたことは、むだであったのか。まさか、むだではあるまい。

⁵He therefore who supplies the Spirit to you, and works miracles among you, does he do it by the works of the law, or by hearing of faith?

⁵すると、あなたがたに御霊を賜い、力あるわざをあなたがたの間でなされたのは、律法を行ったからか、それとも、聞いて信じたからか。

⁶Even as Abraham “believed God, and it was counted to him for righteousness.”

⁶このように、アブラハムは「神を信じた。それによって、彼は義と認められた」のである。

⁷Know therefore that those who are of faith, the same are children of Abraham.

⁷だから、信仰による者こそアブラハムの子であることを、知るべきである。

⁸The Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, preached the Good News beforehand to Abraham, saying, “In you all the nations will be blessed.” Genesis 12:3; 18:18; 22:18

⁸聖書は、神が異邦人を信仰によって義とされることを、あらかじめ知って、アブラハムに、「あなたによって、すべての国民は祝福されるであろう」との良い知らせを、予告したのである。

⁹So then, those who are of faith are blessed with the faithful Abraham.

⁹このように、信仰による者は、信仰の人アブラハムと共に、祝福を受けるのである。

¹⁰For as many as are of the works of the law are under a curse. For it is written, “Cursed is everyone who doesn’t continue in all things that are written in the book of the law, to do them.” Deuteronomy 27:26

¹⁰いったい、律法の行いによる者は、皆のろいの下にある。「律法の書に書いてあるいっさいのことを守らず、これを行わない者は、皆のろわれる」と書いてあるからである。

¹¹Now that no man is justified by the law before God is evident, for, “The righteous will live by faith.” Habakkuk 2:4

¹¹そこで、律法によっては、神のみまえに義とされる者はひとりもないことが、明らかである。なぜなら、「信仰による義人は生きる」からである。

¹²The law is not of faith, but, “The man who does them will live by them.” Leviticus 18:5

¹²律法は信仰に基いているものではない。かえって、「律法を行う者は律法によって生きる」のである。

¹³Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us. For it is written, “Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree,” Deuteronomy 21:23

¹³キリストは、わたしたちのためにのろいとなって、わたしたちを律法ののろいからあがない出して下さった。聖書に、「木にかけられる者は、すべてのろわれる」と書いてある。

¹⁴that the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Christ Jesus; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.

¹⁴それは、アブラハムの受けた祝福が、イエス・キリストにあって異邦人に及ぶためであり、約束された御霊を、わたしたちが信仰によって受けるためである。

¹⁵Brothers, speaking of human terms, though it is only a man’s covenant, yet when it has been confirmed, no one makes it void, or adds to it.

¹⁵兄弟たちよ。世のならわしを例にとって言おう。人間の遺言でさえ、いったん作成されたら、これを無効にしたり、これに付け加えたりすることは、だれにもできない。

¹⁶Now the promises were spoken to Abraham and to his seed. He doesn’t say, “To seeds,” as of many, but as of one, “To your seed,” Genesis 12:7; 13:15; 24:7 which is Christ.

¹⁶さて、約束は、アブラハムと彼の子孫とに対してなされたのである。それは、多数をさして「子孫たちとに」と言わずに、ひとりをさして「あなたの子孫とに」と言っている。これは、キリストのことである。

¹⁷Now I say this. A covenant confirmed beforehand by God in Christ, the law, which came four hundred thirty years after, does not annul, so as to make the promise of no effect.

¹⁷わたしの言う意味は、こうである。神によってあらかじめ立てられた契約が、四百三十年の後にできた律法によって破棄されて、その約束がむなしくなるようなことはない。

¹⁸For if the inheritance is of the law, it is no more of promise; but God has granted it to Abraham by promise.

¹⁸もし相続が、律法に基いてなされるとすれば、もはや約束に基いたものではない。ところが事実、神は約束によって、相続の恵みをアブラハムに賜わったのである。

¹⁹What then is the law? It was added because of transgressions, until the seed should come to whom the promise has been made. It was ordained through angels by the hand of a mediator.

¹⁹それでは、律法はなんであるか。それは違反を促すため、あとから加えられたのであって、約束されていた子孫が来るまで存続するだけのものであり、かつ、天使たちをとおし、仲介者の手によって制定されたものにすぎない。

²⁰Now a mediator is not between one, but God is one.

²⁰仲介者なるものは、一方だけに属する者ではない。しかし、神はひとりである。

²¹Is the law then against the promises of God? Certainly not! For if there had been a law given which could make alive, most certainly righteousness would have been of the law.

²¹では、律法は神の約束と相いれないものか。断じてそうではない。もし人を生かす力のある律法が与えられていたとすれば、義はたしかに律法によって実現されたであろう。

²²But the Scriptures imprisoned all things under sin, that the promise by faith in Jesus Christ might be given to those who believe.

²²しかし、約束が、信じる人々にイエス・キリストに対する信仰によって与えられるために、聖書はすべての人を罪の下に閉じ込めたのである。

²³But before faith came, we were kept in custody under the law, confined for the faith which should afterwards be revealed.

²³しかし、信仰が現れる前には、わたしたちは律法の下で監視されており、やがて啓示される信仰の時まで閉じ込められていた。

²⁴So that the law has become our tutor to bring us to Christ, that we might be justified by faith.

²⁴このようにして律法は、信仰によって義とされるために、わたしたちをキリストに連れて行く養育掛となったのである。

²⁵But now that faith has come, we are no longer under a tutor.

²⁵しかし、いったん信仰が現れた以上、わたしたちは、もはや養育掛のもとにはいない。

²⁶For you are all children of God, through faith in Christ Jesus.

²⁶あなたがたはみな、キリスト・イエスにある信仰によって、神の子なのである。

²⁷For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ.

²⁷キリストに合うバプテスマを受けたあなたがたは、皆キリストを着たのである。

²⁸There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free man, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus.

²⁸もはや、ユダヤ人もギリシヤ人もなく、奴隷も自由人もなく、男も女もない。あなたがたは皆、キリスト・イエスにあって一つだからである。もしキリストのものであるなら、あなたがたはアブラハムの子孫であり、約束による相続人なのである。

²⁹If you are Christ’s, then you are Abraham’s seed and heirs according to promise.

²⁹もしキリストのものであるなら、あなたがたはアブラハムの子孫であり、約束による相続人なのである。
