¹Let not many of you be teachers, my brothers, knowing that we will receive heavier judgment.

¹わたしの兄弟たちよ。あなたがたのうち多くの者は、教師にならないがよい。わたしたち教師が、他の人たちよりも、もっときびしいさばきを受けることが、よくわかっているからである。

²For in many things we all stumble. If anyone doesn’t stumble in word, the same is a perfect man, able to bridle the whole body also.

²わたしたちは皆、多くのあやまちを犯すものである。もし、言葉の上であやまちのない人があれば、そういう人は、全身をも制御することのできる完全な人である。

³Indeed, we put bits into the horses’ mouths so that they may obey us, and we guide their whole body.

³馬を御するために、その口にくつわをはめるなら、その全身を引きまわすことができる。

⁴Behold, the ships also, though they are so big and are driven by fierce winds, are yet guided by a very small rudder, wherever the pilot desires.

⁴また船を見るがよい。船体が非常に大きく、また激しい風に吹きまくられても、ごく小さなかじ一つで、操縦者の思いのままに運転される。

⁵So the tongue is also a little member, and boasts great things. See how a small fire can spread to a large forest!

⁵それと同じく、舌は小さな器官ではあるが、よく大言壮語する。見よ、ごく小さな火でも、非常に大きな森を燃やすではないか。

⁶And the tongue is a fire. The world of iniquity among our members is the tongue, which defiles the whole body, and sets on fire the course of nature, and is set on fire by Gehenna. or, Hell

⁶舌は火である。不義の世界である。舌は、わたしたちの器官の一つとしてそなえられたものであるが、全身を汚し、生存の車輪を燃やし、自らは地獄の火で焼かれる。

⁷For every kind of animal, bird, creeping thing, and thing in the sea, is tamed, and has been tamed by mankind.

⁷あらゆる種類の獣、鳥、這うもの、海の生物は、すべて人類に制せられるし、また制せられてきた。

⁸But nobody can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison.

⁸ところが、舌を制しうる人は、ひとりもいない。それは、制しにくい悪であって、死の毒に満ちている。

⁹With it we bless our God and Father, and with it we curse men, who are made in the image of God.

⁹わたしたちは、この舌で父なる主をさんびし、また、その同じ舌で、神にかたどって造られた人間をのろっている。

¹⁰Out of the same mouth comes forth blessing and cursing. My brothers, these things ought not to be so.

¹⁰同じ口から、さんびとのろいとが出て来る。わたしの兄弟たちよ。このような事は、あるべきでない。

¹¹Does a spring send out from the same opening fresh and bitter water?

¹¹泉が、甘い水と苦い水とを、同じ穴からふき出すことがあろうか。

¹²Can a fig tree, my brothers, yield olives, or a vine figs? Thus no spring yields both salt water and fresh water.

¹²わたしの兄弟たちよ。いちじくの木がオリブの実を結び、ぶどうの木がいちじくの実を結ぶことができようか。塩水も、甘い水を出すことはできない。

¹³Who is wise and understanding among you? Let him show by his good conduct that his deeds are done in gentleness of wisdom.

¹³あなたがたのうちで、知恵があり物わかりのよい人は、だれであるか。その人は、知恵にかなう柔和な行いをしていることを、よい生活によって示すがよい。

¹⁴But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your heart, don’t boast and don’t lie against the truth.

¹⁴しかし、もしあなたがたの心の中に、苦々しいねたみや党派心をいだいているのなら、誇り高ぶってはならない。また、真理にそむいて偽ってはならない。

¹⁵This wisdom is not that which comes down from above, but is earthly, sensual, and demonic.

¹⁵そのような知恵は、上から下ってきたものではなくて、地につくもの、肉に属するもの、悪魔的なものである。

¹⁶For where jealousy and selfish ambition are, there is confusion and every evil deed.

¹⁶ねたみと党派心とのあるところには、混乱とあらゆる忌むべき行為とがある。

¹⁷But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceful, gentle, reasonable, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy.

¹⁷しかし上からの知恵は、第一に清く、次に平和、寛容、温順であり、あわれみと良い実とに満ち、かたより見ず、偽りがない。義の実は、平和を造り出す人たちによって、平和のうちにまかれるものである。

¹⁸Now the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.

¹⁸義の実は、平和を造り出す人たちによって、平和のうちにまかれるものである。
