¹The word which came to Jeremiah from Yahweh, when king Zedekiah sent to him Pashhur the son of Malchijah, and Zephaniah the son of Maaseiah, the priest, saying,

¹ゼデキヤ王は、マルキヤの子パシュルと祭司マアセヤの子ゼパニヤを、エレミヤのもとにつかわし、

²Please inquire of Yahweh for us; for Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon makes war against us: perhaps Yahweh will deal with us according to all his wondrous works, that he may go up from us.

²「バビロンの王ネブカデレザルがわれわれを攻めようとしているゆえ、われわれのために主に尋ねてほしい。主はそのもろもろの不思議なわざをもって、われわれを助け、バビロンの王をわれわれから退かせられるかも知れない」と言わせた。その時、主の言葉がエレミヤに臨んだ。

³Then Jeremiah said to them, You shall tell Zedekiah:

³エレミヤは彼らに答えて言った、「あなたがたはゼデキヤにこのように言いなさい、

⁴Thus says Yahweh, the God of Israel, Behold, I will turn back the weapons of war that are in your hands, with which you fight against the king of Babylon, and against the Chaldeans who besiege you, without the walls; and I will gather them into the midst of this city.

⁴『イスラエルの神、主はこう仰せられる、見よ、あなたがたが、この城壁の外にあって、あなたがたを攻め囲むバビロンの王およびカルデヤびとと戦うとき、わたしはあなたがたの手に持っている武器をとりあげ、これを町の中に集めさせる。

⁵I myself will fight against you with an outstretched hand and with a strong arm, even in anger, and in wrath, and in great indignation.

⁵わたしは手を伸べ、強い腕をもって、怒り、憤り、激しく怒って、あなたがたを攻める。

⁶I will strike the inhabitants of this city, both man and animal: they shall die of a great pestilence.

⁶わたしはまたこの町に住む人と獣とを撃つ。彼らはみな重い疫病にかかって死ぬ。

⁷Afterward, says Yahweh, I will deliver Zedekiah king of Judah, and his servants, and the people, even such as are left in this city from the pestilence, from the sword, and from the famine, into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, and into the hand of their enemies, and into the hand of those who seek their life: and he shall strike them with the edge of the sword; he shall not spare them, neither have pity, nor have mercy.

⁷主は言われる、この後、わたしはユダの王ゼデキヤとその家来たち、および疫病と、つるぎと、ききんを免れて、この町に残っている民を、バビロンの王ネブカデレザルの手と、その敵の手、およびその命を求める者の手に渡す。バビロンの王はつるぎの刃にかけて彼らを撃ち、彼らを惜しまず、顧みず、またあわれむこともしない』。

⁸To this people you shall say, Thus says Yahweh: Behold, I set before you the way of life and the way of death.

⁸あなたはまたこの民に言いなさい、『主はこう仰せられる、見よ、わたしは命の道と死の道とをあなたがたの前に置く。

⁹He who remains in this city shall die by the sword, and by the famine, and by the pestilence; but he who goes out, and passes over to the Chaldeans who besiege you, he shall live, and his life shall be to him for a prey.

⁹この町にとどまる者は、つるぎと、ききんと、疫病とで死ぬ。しかし、出て行って、あなたがたを攻め囲んでいるカルデヤびとに降伏する者は死を免れ、その命は自分のぶんどり物となる。

¹⁰For I have set my face on this city for evil, and not for good, says Yahweh: it shall be given into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he shall burn it with fire.

¹⁰主は言われる、わたしがこの町に顔を向けたのは幸を与えるためではなく、災を与えるためである。この町はバビロンの王の手に渡される。彼は火をもって、これを焼き払う』。

¹¹Touching the house of the king of Judah, hear the word of Yahweh:

¹¹またユダの王の家に言いなさい、『主の言葉を聞きなさい。

¹²House of David, thus says Yahweh, Execute justice in the morning, and deliver him who is robbed out of the hand of the oppressor, lest my wrath go forth like fire, and burn so that none can quench it, because of the evil of your doings.

¹²ダビデの家よ、主はこう仰せられる、朝ごとに、正しいさばきを行い、物を奪われた人をしえたげる者の手から救え。そうしないと、あなたがたの悪い行いのために、わたしの怒りは火のように燃えて、それを消すことはできない』」。

¹³Behold, I am against you, O inhabitant of the valley, and of the rock of the plain, says Yahweh; you that say, Who shall come down against us? or who shall enter into our habitations?

¹³「主は言われる、谷に住む者よ、平原の岩よ、見よ、わたしはあなたに敵する。あなたがたは言う、『だれが下ってきて、われわれを攻めるものか、だれがわれわれのいる所に、はいるものか』と。わたしはあなたがたを、その行いの実によって罰する。またその林に火をつけて、その周囲のものをみな焼き尽すと、主は言われる」。

¹⁴I will punish you according to the fruit of your doings, says Yahweh; and I will kindle a fire in her forest, and it shall devour all that is around her.
