¹Now these are the words of the letter that Jeremiah the prophet sent from Jerusalem to the residue of the elders of the captivity, and to the priests, to the prophets, and to all the people, whom Nebuchadnezzar had carried away captive from Jerusalem to Babylon,

²(after that Jeconiah the king, the queen mother, the eunuchs, the princes of Judah and Jerusalem, the craftsmen, and the smiths, had departed from Jerusalem),

³by the hand of Elasah the son of Shaphan, and Gemariah the son of Hilkiah, (whom Zedekiah king of Judah sent to Babylon to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon), saying,

³エレミヤはその手紙をシャパンの子エラサおよびヒルキヤの子ゲマリヤの手によって送った。この人々はユダの王ゼデキヤがバビロンに行かせ、バビロンの王ネブカデネザルのもとにつかわしたものであった。その手紙には次のように書いてあった。

⁴Thus says Yahweh of Armies, the God of Israel, to all the captivity, whom I have caused to be carried away captive from Jerusalem to Babylon:

⁴「万軍の主、イスラエルの神は、すべて捕え移された者、すなわち、わたしがエルサレムから、バビロンに捕え移させた者に、こう言う、

⁵Build houses, and dwell in them; and plant gardens, and eat their fruit.

⁵あなたがたは家を建てて、それに住み、畑を作ってその産物を食べよ。

⁶Take wives, and father sons and daughters; and take wives for your sons, and give your daughters to husbands, that they may bear sons and daughters; and multiply there, and don’t be diminished.

⁶妻をめとって、むすこ娘を産み、また、そのむすこに嫁をめとり、娘をとつがせて、むすこ娘を産むようにせよ。その所であなたがたの数を増し、減ってはならない。

⁷Seek the peace of the city where I have caused you to be carried away captive, and pray to Yahweh for it; for in its peace you shall have peace.

⁷わたしがあなたがたを捕え移させたところの町の平安を求め、そのために主に祈るがよい。その町が平安であれば、あなたがたも平安を得るからである。

⁸For thus says Yahweh of Armies, the God of Israel: Don’t let your prophets who are in the midst of you, and your diviners, deceive you; neither listen to your dreams which you cause to be dreamed.

⁸万軍の主、イスラエルの神はこう言われる、あなたがたのうちにいる預言者と占い師に惑わされてはならない。また彼らの見る夢に聞き従ってはならない。

⁹For they prophesy falsely to you in my name: I have not sent them, says Yahweh.

⁹それは、彼らがわたしの名によってあなたがたに偽りを預言しているからである。わたしが彼らをつかわしたのではないと主は言われる。

¹⁰For thus says Yahweh, After seventy years are accomplished for Babylon, I will visit you, and perform my good word toward you, in causing you to return to this place.

¹⁰主はこう言われる、バビロンで七十年が満ちるならば、わたしはあなたがたを顧み、わたしの約束を果し、あなたがたをこの所に導き帰る。

¹¹For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says Yahweh, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you hope and a future.

¹¹主は言われる、わたしがあなたがたに対していだいている計画はわたしが知っている。それは災を与えようというのではなく、平安を与えようとするものであり、あなたがたに将来を与え、希望を与えようとするものである。

¹²You shall call on me, and you shall go and pray to me, and I will listen to you.

¹²その時、あなたがたはわたしに呼ばわり、来て、わたしに祈る。わたしはあなたがたの祈を聞く。

¹³You shall seek me, and find me, when you shall search for me with all your heart.

¹³あなたがたはわたしを尋ね求めて、わたしに会う。もしあなたがたが一心にわたしを尋ね求めるならば、

¹⁴I will be found by you, says Yahweh, and I will turn again your captivity, and I will gather you from all the nations, and from all the places where I have driven you, says Yahweh; and I will bring you again to the place from where I caused you to be carried away captive.

¹⁴わたしはあなたがたに会うと主は言われる。わたしはあなたがたの繁栄を回復し、あなたがたを万国から、すべてわたしがあなたがたを追いやった所から集め、かつ、わたしがあなたがたを捕われ離れさせたそのもとの所に、あなたがたを導き帰ろうと主は言われる。

¹⁵Because you have said, Yahweh has raised us up prophets in Babylon;

¹⁵あなたがたは、『主はバビロンでわれわれのために預言者たちを起された』と言ったが、――

¹⁶thus says Yahweh concerning the king who sits on the throne of David, and concerning all the people who dwell in this city, your brothers who haven’t gone forth with you into captivity;

¹⁶主はダビデの位に座している王と、この町に住むすべての民で、あなたがたと共に捕え移されなかった兄弟たちについて、こう言われる、

¹⁷thus says Yahweh of Armies; Behold, I will send on them the sword, the famine, and the pestilence, and will make them like vile figs, that can’t be eaten, they are so bad.

¹⁷『万軍の主はこう言われる、見よ、わたしは、つるぎと、ききんと、疫病を彼らに送り、彼らを悪くて食べられない腐ったいちじくのようにしてしまう。

¹⁸I will pursue after them with the sword, with the famine, and with the pestilence, and will deliver them to be tossed back and forth among all the kingdoms of the earth, to be an object of horror, and an astonishment, and a hissing, and a reproach, among all the nations where I have driven them;

¹⁸わたしはつるぎと、ききんと、疫病をもって彼らのあとを追い、また彼らを地の万国に忌みきらわれるものとなし、わたしが彼らを追いやる国々で、のろいとなり、恐れとなり、物笑いとなり、はずかしめとならせる。

¹⁹because they have not listened to my words, says Yahweh, with which I sent to them my servants the prophets, rising up early and sending them; but you would not hear, says Yahweh.

¹⁹それは彼らがわたしの言葉に聞き従わなかったからであると主は言われる。わたしはこの言葉を、わたしのしもべである預言者たちによって、しきりに送ったが、あなたがたは聞こうともしなかったと主は言われる』。――

²⁰Hear therefore the word of Yahweh, all you of the captivity, whom I have sent away from Jerusalem to Babylon.

²⁰わたしがエルサレムからバビロンに送ったあなたがたすべての捕われ人よ、主の言葉を聞きなさい、

²¹Thus says Yahweh of Armies, the God of Israel, concerning Ahab the son of Kolaiah, and concerning Zedekiah the son of Maaseiah, who prophesy a lie to you in my name: Behold, I will deliver them into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon; and he shall kill them before your eyes;

²¹『わたしの名によって、あなたがたに偽りを預言しているコラヤの子アハブと、マアセヤの子ゼデキヤについて万軍の主、イスラエルの神はこう仰せられる、見よ、わたしは彼らをバビロンの王ネブカデレザルの手に渡す。王はあなたがたの目の前で彼らを殺す。

²²and of them shall be taken up a curse by all the captives of Judah who are in Babylon, saying, Yahweh make you like Zedekiah and like Ahab, whom the king of Babylon roasted in the fire;

²²バビロンにいるユダの捕われ人は皆、彼らの名を、のろいの言葉に用いて、「主があなたをバビロンの王が火で焼いたゼデキヤとアハブのようにされるように」という。

²³because they have worked folly in Israel, and have committed adultery with their neighbors’ wives, and have spoken words in my name falsely, which I didn’t command them; and I am he who knows, and am witness, says Yahweh.

²³それは、彼らがイスラエルのうちで愚かな事をし、隣の妻と不義を行い、わたしが命じたのでない偽りの言葉を、わたしの名によって語ったことによるのである。わたしはそれを知っており、またその証人であると主は言われる』」。

²⁴Concerning Shemaiah the Nehelamite you shall speak, saying,

²⁴ネヘラムびとシマヤにあなたは言いなさい、

²⁵Thus speaks Yahweh of Armies, the God of Israel, saying, Because you have sent letters in your own name to all the people who are at Jerusalem, and to Zephaniah the son of Maaseiah, the priest, and to all the priests, saying,

²⁵「万軍の主、イスラエルの神はこう仰せられる、あなたは自分の名でエルサレムにいるすべての民と、マアセヤの子祭司ゼパニヤおよびすべての祭司に手紙を送って言う、

²⁶Yahweh has made you priest in the place of Jehoiada the priest, that there may be officers in the house of Yahweh, for every man who is mad, and makes himself a prophet, that you should put him in the stocks and in shackles.

²⁶『主は祭司エホヤダに代ってあなたを祭司とし、主の宮をつかさどらせ、すべて狂い、かつ預言する者を足かせと首かせにつながせられる。

²⁷Now therefore, why have you not rebuked Jeremiah of Anathoth, who makes himself a prophet to you,

²⁷そうであるのに、どうしてあなたは、あなたがたに預言しているアナトテのエレミヤを戒めないのか。

²⁸because he has sent to us in Babylon, saying, The captivity is long: build houses, and dwell in them; and plant gardens, and eat their fruit?

²⁸彼はバビロンにいるわれわれの所に手紙を送って、捕われの時はなお長いゆえ、あなたがたは家を建ててそこに住み、畑を作ってその産物を食べよと言ってきた』」。

²⁹Zephaniah the priest read this letter in the ears of Jeremiah the prophet.

²⁹祭司ゼパニヤはこの手紙を預言者エレミヤに読み聞かせた。

³⁰Then came the word of Yahweh to Jeremiah, saying,

³⁰その時、主の言葉がエレミヤに臨んだ、

³¹Send to all them of the captivity, saying, Thus says Yahweh concerning Shemaiah the Nehelamite: Because Shemaiah has prophesied to you, and I didn’t send him, and he has caused you to trust in a lie;

³¹「すべての捕われ人に書き送って言いなさい、ネヘラムびとシマヤの事について主はこう仰せられる、わたしはシマヤをつかわさなかったのに、彼があなたがたに預言して偽りを信じさせたので、主はこう仰せられる、見よ、わたしはネヘラムびとシマヤとその子孫を罰する。彼は主に対する反逆を語ったゆえ、彼に属する者で、この民のうちに住み、わたしが自分の民に行おうとしている良い事を見るものはひとりもいない」。

³²therefore thus says Yahweh, Behold, I will punish Shemaiah the Nehelamite, and his seed; he shall not have a man to dwell among this people, neither shall he see the good that I will do to my people, says Yahweh, because he has spoken rebellion against Yahweh.

³²主はこう仰せられる、見よ、わたしはネヘラムびとシマヤとその子孫を罰する。彼は主に対する反逆を語ったゆえ、彼に属する者で、この民のうちに住み、わたしが自分の民に行おうとしている良い事を見るものはひとりもいない」。
