¹The word that came to Jeremiah concerning all the Jews who lived in the land of Egypt, who lived at Migdol, and at Tahpanhes, and at Memphis, and in the country of Pathros, saying,

¹エジプトの地に住んでいるユダヤ人すなわちミグドル、タパネス、メンピス、パテロスの地に住む者の事についてエレミヤに臨んだ言葉、

²Thus says Yahweh of Armies, the God of Israel: You have seen all the evil that I have brought on Jerusalem, and on all the cities of Judah; and behold, this day they are a desolation, and no man dwells therein,

²「万軍の主、イスラエルの神はこう言われる、あなたがたはわたしがエルサレムとユダの町々に下した災を見た。見よ、これらは今日、すでに荒れ地となって住む人もない。

³because of their wickedness which they have committed to provoke me to anger, in that they went to burn incense, to serve other gods, that they didn’t know, neither they, nor you, nor your fathers.

³これは彼らが悪を行って、わたしを怒らせたことによるのである。すなわち彼らは自分も、あなたがたも、あなたがたの先祖たちも知らなかった、ほかの神々に行って、香をたき、これに仕えた。

⁴However I sent to you all my servants the prophets, rising up early and sending them, saying, Oh, don’t do this abominable thing that I hate.

⁴わたしは自分のしもべであるすべての預言者たちを、しきりにあなたがたにつかわして、『どうか、わたしの忌みきらうこの憎むべき事をしないように』と言わせたけれども、

⁵But they didn’t listen, nor inclined their ear to turn from their wickedness, to burn no incense to other gods.

⁵彼らは聞かず、耳を傾けず、ほかの神々に香をたいて、その悪を離れなかった。

⁶Therefore my wrath and my anger was poured forth, and was kindled in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem; and they are wasted and desolate, as it is this day.

⁶それゆえ、わたしは怒りと憤りをユダの町々とエルサレムのちまたに注ぎ、それを焼いたので、それらは今日のように荒れ、滅びてしまった。

⁷Therefore now thus says Yahweh, the God of Armies, the God of Israel: Why do you commit great evil against your own souls, to cut off from yourselves man and woman, infant and nursing child out of the midst of Judah, to leave yourselves none remaining;

⁷万軍の神、イスラエルの神、主は今こう言われる、あなたがたはなぜ大いなる悪を行って自分自身を害し、ユダのうちから、あなたがたの男と女と、子供と乳のみ子を断って、ひとりも残らないようにしようとするのか。

⁸in that you provoke me to anger with the works of your hands, burning incense to other gods in the land of Egypt, where you have gone to live; that you may be cut off, and that you may be a curse and a reproach among all the nations of the earth?

⁸なぜあなたがたはその手のわざをもってわたしを怒らせ、あなたがたが行って住まうエジプトの地で、ほかの神々に香をたいて自分の身を滅ぼし、地の万国のうちに、のろいとなり、はずかしめとなろうとするのか。

⁹Have you forgotten the wickedness of your fathers, and the wickedness of the kings of Judah, and the wickedness of their wives, and your own wickedness, and the wickedness of your wives which they committed in the land of Judah, and in the streets of Jerusalem?

⁹ユダの地とエルサレムのちまたで行ったあなたがたの先祖たちの悪、ユダの王たちの悪、その妻たちの悪、およびあなたがた自身の悪、あなたがたの妻たちの悪をあなたがたは忘れたのか。

¹⁰They are not humbled even to this day, neither have they feared, nor walked in my law, nor in my statutes, that I set before you and before your fathers.

¹⁰彼らは今日に至るまで悔いず、また恐れず、あなたがたとあなたがたの先祖たちの前に立てた、わたしの律法とわたしの定めとに従って歩まないのである。

¹¹Therefore thus says Yahweh of Armies, the God of Israel: Behold, I will set my face against you for evil, even to cut off all Judah.

¹¹それゆえ万軍の主、イスラエルの神はこう言われる、見よ、わたしは顔をあなたがたに向けて災を下し、ユダの人々をことごとく断つ。

¹²I will take the remnant of Judah, that have set their faces to go into the land of Egypt to live there, and they shall all be consumed; in the land of Egypt shall they fall; they shall be consumed by the sword and by the famine; they shall die, from the least even to the greatest, by the sword and by the famine; and they shall be an object of horror, an astonishment, and a curse, and a reproach.

¹²またわたしは、エジプトの地に住むために、むりに行ったあのユダの残りの者を取り除く。彼らはみな滅ぼされてエジプトの地に倒れる。彼らは、つるぎとききんに滅ぼされ、最も小さい者から最も大いなる者まで、つるぎとききんによって死ぬ。そして、のろいとなり、恐怖となり、ののしりとなり、はずかしめとなる。

¹³For I will punish those who dwell in the land of Egypt, as I have punished Jerusalem, by the sword, by the famine, and by the pestilence;

¹³わたしはエルサレムを罰したように、つるぎと、ききんと、疫病をもってエジプトに住んでいる者を罰する。

¹⁴so that none of the remnant of Judah, who have gone into the land of Egypt to live there, shall escape or be left, to return into the land of Judah, to which they have a desire to return to dwell there: for none shall return save such as shall escape.

¹⁴それゆえ、エジプトの地へ行ってそこに住んでいるユダの残りの者のうち、のがれ、または残って、帰り住まおうと願うユダの地へ帰る者はひとりもない。少数ののがれる者のほかには、帰ってくる者はない」。

¹⁵Then all the men who knew that their wives burned incense to other gods, and all the women who stood by, a great assembly, even all the people who lived in the land of Egypt, in Pathros, answered Jeremiah, saying,

¹⁵その時、自分の妻がほかの神々に香をたいたことを知っている人々、およびその所に立っている女たちの大いなる群衆、ならびにエジプトの地のパテロスに住んでいる民はエレミヤに答えて言った、

¹⁶As for the word that you have spoken to us in the name of Yahweh, we will not listen to you.

¹⁶「あなたが主の名によってわたしたちに述べられた言葉は、わたしたちは聞くことができません。

¹⁷But we will certainly perform every word that is gone forth out of our mouth, to burn incense to the queen of the sky, and to pour out drink offerings to her, as we have done, we and our fathers, our kings and our princes, in the cities of Judah, and in the streets of Jerusalem; for then had we plenty of food, and were well, and saw no evil.

¹⁷わたしたちは誓ったことをみな行い、わたしたちが、もと行っていたように香を天后にたき、また酒をその前に注ぎます。すなわち、ユダの町々とエルサレムのちまたで、わたしたちとわたしたちの先祖たちおよびわたしたちの王たちと、わたしたちのつかさたちが行ったようにいたします。その時には、わたしたちは糧食には飽き、しあわせで、災に会いませんでした。

¹⁸But since we left off burning incense to the queen of the sky, and pouring out drink offerings to her, we have wanted all things, and have been consumed by the sword and by the famine.

¹⁸ところが、わたしたちが、天后に香をたくことをやめ、酒をその前に注がなくなった時から、すべての物に乏しくなり、つるぎとききんに滅ぼされました」。

¹⁹When we burned incense to the queen of the sky, and poured out drink offerings to her, did we make her cakes to worship her, and pour out drink offerings to her, without our husbands?

¹⁹また女たちは言った、「わたしたちが天后に香をたき、酒をその前に注ぐに当って、これにかたどってパンを造り、酒を注いだのは、わたしたちの夫が許したことではありませんか」。

²⁰Then Jeremiah said to all the people, to the men, and to the women, even to all the people who had given him an answer, saying,

²⁰そこでエレミヤは男女のすべての人、およびこの答をしたすべての民に言った、

²¹The incense that you burned in the cities of Judah, and in the streets of Jerusalem, you and your fathers, your kings and your princes, and the people of the land, didn’t Yahweh remember them, and didn’t it come into his mind?

²¹「ユダの町々とエルサレムのちまたで、あなたがたとあなたがたの先祖たち、およびあなたがたの王たちとあなたがたのつかさたち、およびその地の民が香をたいたことは、主がこれを忘れず、また、心にとどめておられることではないか。

²²so that Yahweh could no longer bear, because of the evil of your doings, and because of the abominations which you have committed; therefore your land has become a desolation, and an astonishment, and a curse, without inhabitant, as it is this day.

²²主はあなたがたの悪しきわざのため、あなたがたの憎むべき行いのために、もはや忍ぶことができなくなられた。それゆえ、あなたがたの地は今日のごとく荒れ地となり、驚きとなり、のろいとなり、住む人のない地となった。

²³Because you have burned incense, and because you have sinned against Yahweh, and have not obeyed the voice of Yahweh, nor walked in his law, nor in his statutes, nor in his testimonies; therefore this evil has happened to you, as it is this day.

²³あなたがたが香をたき、主に罪を犯し、主の声に聞き従わず、その律法と、定めと、あかしに従って歩まなかったので、今日のようにこの災があなたがたに臨んだのである」。

²⁴Moreover Jeremiah said to all the people, and to all the women, Hear the word of Yahweh, all Judah who are in the land of Egypt:

²⁴エレミヤはまたすべての民と女たちに言った、「あなたがたすべてエジプトの地にいるユダの人々よ、主の言葉を聞きなさい。

²⁵Thus says Yahweh of Armies, the God of Israel, saying, You and your wives have both spoken with your mouths, and with your hands have fulfilled it, saying, We will surely perform our vows that we have vowed, to burn incense to the queen of the sky, and to pour out drink offerings to her: establish then your vows, and perform your vows.

²⁵万軍の主、イスラエルの神はこう言われる、あなたがたとあなたがたの妻たちは口で言い、手で行い、『わたしたちは天后に香をたき、酒を注いで立てた誓いを必ずなし遂げる』と言う。それならば、あなたがたの誓いをかため、あなたがたの誓いをなし遂げなさい。

²⁶Therefore hear the word of Yahweh, all Judah who dwell in the land of Egypt: Behold, I have sworn by my great name, says Yahweh, that my name shall no more be named in the mouth of any man of Judah in all the land of Egypt, saying, As the Lord Yahweh lives.

²⁶それゆえ、あなたがたすべてエジプトの地にいるユダの人々よ、主の言葉を聞きなさい。主は言われる、わたしは自分の大いなる名をさして誓う、すなわちエジプトの全地に、ユダの人々で、その口に、『主なる神は生きておられる』と言って、わたしの名をとなえるものは、もはやひとりもないようになる。

²⁷Behold, I watch over them for evil, and not for good; and all the men of Judah who are in the land of Egypt shall be consumed by the sword and by the famine, until they are all gone.

²⁷見よ、わたしは彼らを見守っている、それは幸を与えるためではなく、災を下すためである。エジプトの地にいるユダの人々は、つるぎとききんによって滅び絶える。

²⁸Those who escape the sword shall return out of the land of Egypt into the land of Judah, few in number; and all the remnant of Judah, who have gone into the land of Egypt to live there, shall know whose word shall stand, mine, or theirs.

²⁸しかし、つるぎをのがれるわずかの者はエジプトの地を出てユダの地に帰る。そしてユダの残っている民でエジプトに来て住んだ者は、わたしの言葉が立つか、彼らの言葉が立つか、いずれであるかを知るようになる。

²⁹This shall be the sign to you, says Yahweh, that I will punish you in this place, that you may know that my words shall surely stand against you for evil:

²⁹主は言われる、わたしがこの所であなたがたを罰するしるしはこれである。わたしはこのようにしてわたしがあなたがたに災を下そうと言った事の必ず立つことを知らせよう。すなわち主はこう言われる、見よ、わたしはユダの王ゼデキヤを、その命を求める敵であるバビロンの王ネブカデレザルの手に渡したように、エジプトの王パロ・ホフラをその敵の手、その命を求める者の手に渡す」。

³⁰Thus says Yahweh, Behold, I will give Pharaoh Hophra king of Egypt into the hand of his enemies, and into the hand of those who seek his life; as I gave Zedekiah king of Judah into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, who was his enemy, and sought his life.

³⁰すなわち主はこう言われる、見よ、わたしはユダの王ゼデキヤを、その命を求める敵であるバビロンの王ネブカデレザルの手に渡したように、エジプトの王パロ・ホフラをその敵の手、その命を求める者の手に渡す」。
