¹The word of Yahweh which came to Jeremiah the prophet concerning the nations.

¹もろもろの国の事について預言者エレミヤに臨んだ主の言葉。

²Of Egypt: concerning the army of Pharaoh Necoh king of Egypt, which was by the river Euphrates in Carchemish, which Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon struck in the fourth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah.

²エジプトの事、すなわちユフラテ川のほとりにあるカルケミシの近くにいるエジプトの王パロ・ネコの軍勢の事について。これはユダの王ヨシヤの子エホヤキムの四年に、バビロンの王ネブカデレザルが撃ち破ったものである。その言葉は次のとおりである、

³Prepare the buckler and shield, and draw near to battle!

³「大盾と小盾とを備え、進んで戦え。

⁴Harness the horses, and get up, you horsemen, and stand forth with your helmets; furbish the spears, put on the coats of mail.

⁴騎兵よ、馬を戦車につなぎ、馬に乗れ。かぶとをかぶって立て。ほこをみがき、よろいを着よ。

⁵Why have I seen it? they are dismayed and are turned backward; and their mighty ones are beaten down, and have fled apace, and don’t look back: terror is on every side, says Yahweh.

⁵わたしは見たが、何ゆえか彼らは恐れて退き、その勇士たちは打ち敗られ、あわてて逃げて、うしろをふり向くこともしない、――恐れが彼らの周囲にあると主は言われる。

⁶Don’t let the swift flee away, nor the mighty man escape; in the north by the river Euphrates have they stumbled and fallen.

⁶足早き者も逃げることができず、勇士ものがれることができない。北の方、ユフラテ川のほとりで彼らはつまずき倒れた。

⁷Who is this who rises up like the Nile, whose waters toss themselves like the rivers?

⁷あのナイル川のようにわきあがり、川々のように、その水のさかまく者はだれか。

⁸Egypt rises up like the Nile, and his waters toss themselves like the rivers: and he says, I will rise up, I will cover the earth; I will destroy cities and its inhabitants.

⁸エジプトはナイル川のようにわきあがり、その水は川々のようにさかまく。そしてこれは言う、わたしは上って、地をおおい、町々とそのうちに住む者を滅ぼそう。

⁹Go up, you horses; and rage, you chariots; and let the mighty men go forth: Cush and Put, who handle the shield; and the Ludim, who handle and bend the bow.

⁹馬よ、進め、車よ、激しく走れ。勇士よ、盾を取るエチオピヤびとと、プテびとよ、弓を巧みに引くルデびとよ、進み出よ。

¹⁰For that day is of the Lord, Yahweh of Armies, a day of vengeance, that he may avenge him of his adversaries: and the sword shall devour and be satiate, and shall drink its fill of their blood; for the Lord, Yahweh of Armies, has a sacrifice in the north country by the river Euphrates.

¹⁰その日は万軍の神、主の日であって、主があだを報いられる日、その敵にあだをかえされる日だ。つるぎは食べて飽き、彼らの血に酔う。万軍の神、主が、北の地で、ユフラテ川のほとりで、ほふることをなされるからだ。

¹¹Go up into Gilead, and take balm, virgin daughter of Egypt: in vain do you use many medicines; there is no healing for you.

¹¹おとめなるエジプトの娘よ、ギレアデに上って乳香を取れ。あなたは多くの薬を用いても、むだだ。あなたは、いやされることはない。

¹²The nations have heard of your shame, and the earth is full of your cry; for the mighty man has stumbled against the mighty, they are fallen both of them together.

¹²あなたの恥は国々に聞えている、あなたの叫びは地に満ちている。勇士が勇士につまずいて、共に倒れたからである」。

¹³The word that Yahweh spoke to Jeremiah the prophet, how that Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon should come and strike the land of Egypt.

¹³バビロンの王ネブカデレザルが来て、エジプトの地を撃とうとする事について、主が預言者エレミヤにお告げになった言葉、

¹⁴Declare in Egypt, and publish in Migdol, and publish in Memphis and in Tahpanhes: say, Stand forth, and prepare; for the sword has devoured around you.

¹⁴「エジプトで宣べ、ミグドルで告げ示し、またメンピスとタパネスに告げ示して言え、『堅く立って、備えせよ、つるぎがあなたの周囲を、滅ぼし尽すからだ』。

¹⁵Why are your strong ones swept away? they didn’t stand, because Yahweh pushed them.

¹⁵なぜ、アピスはのがれたのか。あなたの雄牛は、なぜ立たなかったのか。それは主がこれを倒されたからだ。

¹⁶He made many to stumble, yes, they fell one on another: and they said, Arise, and let us go again to our own people, and to the land of our birth, from the oppressing sword.

¹⁶あなたに属する多くの兵は、つまずいて倒れた。そして互に言った、『立てよ、われわれは、しえたげる者のつるぎを避けて、われわれの民に帰り、故郷の地へ行こう』と。

¹⁷They cried there, Pharaoh king of Egypt is but a noise; he has let the appointed time pass by.

¹⁷エジプトの王パロの名を、『好機を逸する騒がしい者』と呼べ。

¹⁸As I live, says the King, whose name is Yahweh of Armies, surely like Tabor among the mountains, and like Carmel by the sea, so shall he come.

¹⁸万軍の主という名の王は言われる、わたしは生きている、彼は山々のうちのタボルのように、海のほとりのカルメルのように来り臨む。

¹⁹You daughter who dwells in Egypt, furnish yourself to go into captivity; for Memphis shall become a desolation, and shall be burnt up, without inhabitant.

¹⁹エジプトに住む民よ、捕われのために荷物を備えよ。メンピスは荒れ地となり、廃虚となって住む人もなくなる。

²⁰Egypt is a very beautiful heifer; but destruction out of the north has come, it has come.

²⁰エジプトは美しい雌の子牛だ、しかし北から、牛ばえが来て、それにとまった。

²¹Also her hired men in the midst of her are like calves of the stall; for they also are turned back, they are fled away together, they didn’t stand: for the day of their calamity has come on them, the time of their visitation.

²¹そのうちにいる雇兵でさえ、肥えた子牛のようだ。彼らはふり返って共に逃げ、立つことをしなかった。彼らの災難の日、その罰せられる時が来たからだ。

²²The sound of it shall go like the serpent; for they shall march with an army, and come against her with axes, as wood cutters.

²²彼は逃げ去るへびのような音をたてる。その敵が軍勢を率いて彼に臨み、きこりのように、おのをもって来るからだ。

²³They shall cut down her forest, says Yahweh, though it can’t be searched; because they are more than the locusts, and are innumerable.

²³彼らは彼の林がいかに入り込みがたくとも、それを切り倒す。彼らはいなごよりも多く、数えがたいからであると、主は言われる。

²⁴The daughter of Egypt shall be disappointed; she shall be delivered into the hand of the people of the north.

²⁴エジプトの娘ははずかしめを受け、北からくる民の手に渡される」。

²⁵Yahweh of Armies, the God of Israel, says: Behold, I will punish Amon of No, and Pharaoh, and Egypt, with her gods, and her kings; even Pharaoh, and those who trust in him:

²⁵万軍の主、イスラエルの神は言われた、「見よ、わたしはテーベのアモンと、パロと、エジプトとその神々とその王たち、すなわちパロと彼を頼む者とを罰する。

²⁶and I will deliver them into the hand of those who seek their lives, and into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, and into the hand of his servants; and afterwards it shall be inhabited, as in the days of old, says Yahweh.

²⁶わたしは彼らを、その命を求める者の手と、バビロンの王ネブカデレザルの手と、その家来たちの手に渡す。その後、エジプトは昔のように人の住む所となると、主は言われる。

²⁷But don’t you be afraid, Jacob my servant, neither be dismayed, Israel: for, behold, I will save you from afar, and your seed from the land of their captivity; and Jacob shall return, and shall be quiet and at ease, and none shall make him afraid.

²⁷わたしのしもべヤコブよ、恐れることはない、イスラエルよ、驚くことはない。見よ、わたしがあなたを遠くから救い、あなたの子孫をその捕え移された地から救うからだ。ヤコブは帰ってきて、おだやかに、安らかになり、彼を恐れさせる者はない。主は言われる、わたしのしもべヤコブよ、恐れることはない、わたしが共にいるからだ。わたしはあなたを追いやった国々をことごとく滅ぼし尽す。しかしあなたを滅ぼし尽すことはしない。わたしは正しい道に従って、あなたを懲らしめる、決して罰しないではおかない」。

²⁸Don’t you be afraid, O Jacob my servant, says Yahweh; for I am with you: for I will make a full end of all the nations where I have driven you; but I will not make a full end of you, but I will correct you in measure, and will in no way leave you unpunished.

²⁸主は言われる、わたしのしもべヤコブよ、恐れることはない、わたしが共にいるからだ。わたしはあなたを追いやった国々をことごとく滅ぼし尽す。しかしあなたを滅ぼし尽すことはしない。わたしは正しい道に従って、あなたを懲らしめる、決して罰しないではおかない」。
