¹Thus says Yahweh: Behold, I will raise up against Babylon, and against those who dwell in Lebkamai, a destroying wind.

¹主はこう言われる、「見よ、わたしは、滅ぼす者の心を奮い起して、バビロンを攻め、カルデヤに住む者を攻めさせる。

²I will send to Babylon strangers, who shall winnow her; and they shall empty her land: for in the day of trouble they shall be against her around.

²わたしはバビロンに、あおぎ分ける者をつかわす。彼らは、その災の日に、四方からこれを攻め、それをあおぎ分けて、その地をむなしくする。

³Against him who bends let the archer bend his bow, and against him who lifts himself up in his coat of mail: and don’t spare her young men; utterly destroy all her army.

³射手にはその弓を張らせることなく、よろいを着て立ち上がらせるな。その若き者をあわれむことなく、その軍勢をことごとく滅ぼせ。

⁴They shall fall down slain in the land of the Chaldeans, and thrust through in her streets.

⁴彼らはカルデヤびとの地に殺されて倒れ、そのちまたに傷ついて倒れる。

⁵For Israel is not forsaken, nor Judah, of his God, of Yahweh of Armies; though their land is full of guilt against the Holy One of Israel.

⁵イスラエルとユダはその神、万軍の主に捨てられてはいないが、しかしカルデヤびとの地にはイスラエルの聖者に向かって犯した罪が満ちている。

⁶Flee out of the midst of Babylon, and save every man his life; don’t be cut off in her iniquity: for it is the time of Yahweh’s vengeance; he will render to her a recompense.

⁶バビロンのうちからのがれ出て、おのおのその命を救え。その罰にまきこまれて断ち滅ぼされてはならない。今は主があだを返される時だから、それに報復をされるのである。

⁷Babylon has been a golden cup in Yahweh’s hand, who made all the earth drunken: the nations have drunk of her wine; therefore the nations are mad.

⁷バビロンは主の手のうちにある金の杯であって、すべての地を酔わせた。国々はその酒を飲んだので、国々は狂った。

⁸Babylon is suddenly fallen and destroyed: wail for her; take balm for her pain, if so be she may be healed.

⁸バビロンはたちまち倒れて破れた。これがために嘆け。その傷のために乳香を取れ。あるいは、いえるかも知れない。

⁹We would have healed Babylon, but she is not healed: forsake her, and let us go everyone into his own country; for her judgment reaches to heaven, and is lifted up even to the skies.

⁹われわれはバビロンをいやそうとしたが、これはいえなかった。われわれはこれを捨てて、おのおの自分の国に帰ろう。その罰が天に達し、雲にまで及んでいるからだ。

¹⁰Yahweh has brought forth our righteousness: come, and let us declare in Zion the work of Yahweh our God.

¹⁰主はわれわれの正しいことを明らかにされた。さあ、われわれはシオンで、われわれの神、主のみわざを告げ示そう。

¹¹Make sharp the arrows; hold firm the shields: Yahweh has stirred up the spirit of the kings of the Medes; because his purpose is against Babylon, to destroy it: for it is the vengeance of Yahweh, the vengeance of his temple.

¹¹矢をとぎ、盾を取れ。主はメデアびとの王たちの心を引き立てられる。主のバビロンに思い図ることは、これを滅ぼすことであり、主があだを返し、その宮のあだを返されるのである。

¹²Set up a standard against the walls of Babylon, make the watch strong, set the watchmen, prepare the ambushes; for Yahweh has both purposed and done that which he spoke concerning the inhabitants of Babylon.

¹²バビロンの城壁に向かって旗を立て、見張りを強固にし、番兵を置き、伏兵を備えよ。主がバビロンに住む者を攻めようと図り、その言われたことを、いま行われるからだ。

¹³You who dwell on many waters, abundant in treasures, your end has come, the measure of your covetousness.

¹³多くの水のほとりに住み、多くの財宝を持つ者よ、あなたの終りが来て、その命の糸は断たれる。

¹⁴Yahweh of Armies has sworn by himself, saying, Surely I will fill you with men, as with the canker worm; and they shall lift up a shout against you.

¹⁴万軍の主はみずからをさして誓い、言われる、わたしは必ずあなたのうちに、人をいなごのように満たす。彼らはあなたに向かって、かちどきの声をあげる。

¹⁵He has made the earth by his power, he has established the world by his wisdom, and by his understanding has he stretched out the heavens:

¹⁵主はその力をもって地を造り、その知恵をもって世界を建て、その悟りをもって天をのべられた。

¹⁶when he utters his voice, there is a tumult of waters in the heavens, and he causes the vapors to ascend from the ends of the earth; he makes lightning for the rain, and brings forth the wind out of his treasuries.

¹⁶彼が声を出されると、天に多くの水のざわめきがあり、また地の果から霧を立ちあがらせられる。彼は雨のためにいなびかりをおこし、その倉から風を取り出される。

¹⁷Every man has become brutish without knowledge. Every goldsmith is disappointed by his image; for his molten image is falsehood, and there is no breath in them.

¹⁷すべての人は愚かで知恵がなく、すべての金細工人はその造った偶像のために恥をこうむる。その偶像は偽り物で、そのうちに息がないからだ。

¹⁸They are vanity, a work of delusion: in the time of their visitation they shall perish.

¹⁸それらは、むなしいもの、迷いのわざである。罰せられる時になれば滅びるものである。

¹⁹The portion of Jacob is not like these; for he is the former of all things; and is the tribe of his inheritance: Yahweh of Armies is his name.

¹⁹ヤコブの分である彼はこのようなものではない、彼は万物の造り主だからである。イスラエルは彼の嗣業としての部族である。彼の名は万軍の主という。

²⁰You are my battle axe and weapons of war: and with you will I break in pieces the nations; and with you will I destroy kingdoms;

²⁰おまえはわたしの鎚であり、戦いの武器である。わたしはおまえをもってすべての国を砕き、おまえをもって万国を滅ぼす。

²¹and with you will I break in pieces the horse and his rider;

²¹おまえをもってわたしは馬と、その騎手とを砕き、おまえをもって戦車とそれに乗る者とを砕く。

²²and with you will I break in pieces the chariot and him who rides therein; and with you will I break in pieces man and woman; and with you will I break in pieces the old man and the youth; and with you will I break in pieces the young man and the virgin;

²²わたしはおまえをもって男と女とを砕き、おまえをもって老いた者と幼い者とを砕き、おまえをもって若い者と、おとめとを砕く。

²³and with you will I break in pieces the shepherd and his flock; and with you will I break in pieces the farmer and his yoke; and with you will I break in pieces governors and deputies.

²³わたしはおまえをもって、羊飼と、その群れとを砕き、おまえをもって農夫と、くびきを負う家畜とを砕き、おまえをもっておさたちと、つかさたちとを砕く。

²⁴I will render to Babylon and to all the inhabitants of Chaldea all their evil that they have done in Zion in your sight, says Yahweh.

²⁴わたしはバビロンとカルデヤに住むすべての者とに、彼らがシオンで行ったもろもろの悪しき事のために、あなたがたの目の前で報いをすると、主は言われる。

²⁵Behold, I am against you, destroying mountain, says Yahweh, which destroys all the earth; and I will stretch out my hand on you, and roll you down from the rocks, and will make you a burnt mountain.

²⁵主は言われる、全地を滅ぼし尽す滅ぼしの山よ、見よ、わたしはおまえの敵となる、わたしは手をおまえの上に伸べて、おまえを岩からころばし、おまえを焼け山にする。

²⁶They shall not take of you a stone for a corner, nor a stone for foundations; but you shall be desolate for ever, says Yahweh.

²⁶主は言われる、人がおまえから石を取って、隅の石とすることなく、また礎とすることもない。おまえはいつまでも荒れ地となっている。

²⁷Set up a standard in the land, blow the trumpet among the nations, prepare the nations against her, call together against her the kingdoms of Ararat, Minni, and Ashkenaz: appoint a marshal against her; cause the horses to come up as the rough canker worm.

²⁷地に旗を立て、国々のうちにラッパを吹き、国々の民を集めてそれを攻め、アララテ、ミンニ、アシケナズの国々をまねいてそれを攻め、軍の長を立ててそれを攻め、群がるいなごのように馬を上り行かせよ。

²⁸Prepare against her the nations, the kings of the Medes, its governors, and all its deputies, and all the land of their dominion.

²⁸国々の民を集めてそれを攻め、メデアびとの王たちと、そのおさたち、つかさたち、およびすべての領地の人々を集めてこれを攻めよ。

²⁹The land trembles and is in pain; for the purposes of Yahweh against Babylon do stand, to make the land of Babylon a desolation, without inhabitant.

²⁹その地は震い、かつもだえ苦しむ、主がその思い図ることをバビロンにおこない、バビロンの地を、住む人なき荒れ地とされるからだ。

³⁰The mighty men of Babylon have forborne to fight, they remain in their strongholds; their might has failed; they are become as women: her dwelling places are set on fire; her bars are broken.

³⁰バビロンの勇士たちは戦いをやめて、その城にこもり、力はうせて、女のようになる。その家は焼け、その貫の木は砕かれる。

³¹One runner will run to meet another, and one messenger to meet another, to show the king of Babylon that his city is taken on every quarter:

³¹飛脚は走って飛脚に会い、使者は走って使者に会い、バビロンの王に告げて、町はことごとく取られ、

³²and the passages are seized, and the reeds they have burned with fire, and the men of war are frightened.

³²渡し場は奪われ、とりでは火で焼かれ、兵士はおびえていると言う。

³³For thus says Yahweh of Armies, the God of Israel: The daughter of Babylon is like a threshing floor at the time when it is trodden; yet a little while, and the time of harvest shall come for her.

³³万軍の主、イスラエルの神はこう言われる、バビロンの娘は、打ち場のようだ、その踏まれる時が来たのだ。しばらくしてその刈り取られる時が来る」。

³⁴Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon has devoured me, he has crushed me, he has made me an empty vessel, he has, like a monster, swallowed me up, he has filled his maw with my delicacies; he has cast me out.

³⁴「バビロンの王ネブカデレザルはわたしを食い尽し、わたしを滅ぼし、わたしを、からの器のようにし、龍のようにわたしを飲み、わたしのうまい物でその腹を満たし、わたしを洗いざらいにした。

³⁵The violence done to me and to my flesh be on Babylon, shall the inhabitant of Zion say; and, My blood be on the inhabitants of Chaldea, shall Jerusalem say.

³⁵わたしとわたしの肉親におこなった暴虐は、バビロンにふりかかる」とシオンに住む者は言わなければならない。「わたしの血はカルデヤに住む者にふりかかる」とエルサレムは言わなければならない。

³⁶Therefore thus says Yahweh: Behold, I will plead your cause, and take vengeance for you; and I will dry up her sea, and make her fountain dry.

³⁶それゆえ主はこう言われる、「見よ、わたしはあなたの訴えをただし、あなたのためにあだを返す。わたしはバビロンの海をかわかし、その泉をかわかす。

³⁷Babylon shall become heaps, a dwelling place for jackals, an astonishment, and a hissing, without inhabitant.

³⁷バビロンは荒塚となり、山犬のすまいとなり、驚きとなり、笑いとなり、住む人のない所となる。

³⁸They shall roar together like young lions; they shall growl as lions’ cubs.

³⁸彼らはししのように共にほえ、若いししのようにほえる。

³⁹When they are heated, I will make their feast, and I will make them drunken, that they may rejoice, and sleep a perpetual sleep, and not wake, says Yahweh.

³⁹彼らの欲の燃えている時、わたしは宴を設けて彼らを酔わせ、彼らがついに気を失って、ながい眠りにいり、もはや目をさますことのないようにしようと主は言われる。

⁴⁰I will bring them down like lambs to the slaughter, like rams with male goats.

⁴⁰わたしは彼らを小羊のように、また雄羊や雄やぎのように、ほふり場に下らせよう。

⁴¹How is Sheshach taken! and the praise of the whole earth seized! how is Babylon become a desolation among the nations!

⁴¹ああ、バビロンはついに取られた、全地の人の、ほめたたえた者は捕えられた。ああ、バビロンはついに国々のうちに驚きとなった。

⁴²The sea has come up on Babylon; she is covered with the multitude of its waves.

⁴²海はバビロンにあふれかかり、どよめく波におおわれた。

⁴³Her cities are become a desolation, a dry land, and a desert, a land in which no man dwells, neither does any son of man pass thereby.

⁴³その町々は荒れて、かわいた地となり、砂原となり、住む人のない地となる。人の子はひとりとしてそこを過ぎることはない。

⁴⁴I will execute judgment on Bel in Babylon, and I will bring forth out of his mouth that which he has swallowed up; and the nations shall not flow any more to him: yes, the wall of Babylon shall fall.

⁴⁴わたしはバビロンでベルを罰し、そののみこんだものを口から取り出す。国々が川のように彼に流れ入ることはなくなる。バビロンの城壁は倒れた。

⁴⁵My people, go away from the midst of her, and save yourselves every man from the fierce anger of Yahweh.

⁴⁵わが民よ、あなたがたはその中から出て、おのおの主の激しい怒りを免れ、その命を救え。

⁴⁶Don’t let your heart faint, neither fear for the news that shall be heard in the land; for news shall come one year, and after that in another year shall come news, and violence in the land, ruler against ruler.

⁴⁶心を弱くしてはならない、この地で聞くうわさを恐れてはならない。うわさはこの年にもくれば、また次の年にもくる。この地に暴虐があり、つかさとつかさとが攻めあうことがある。

⁴⁷Therefore behold, the days come, that I will execute judgment on the engraved images of Babylon; and her whole land shall be confounded; and all her slain shall fall in the midst of her.

⁴⁷それゆえ見よ、わたしがバビロンの偶像を罰する日が来る。その全地ははずかしめられ、その殺される者はみなその中に倒れる。

⁴⁸Then the heavens and the earth, and all that is therein, shall sing for joy over Babylon; for the destroyers shall come to her from the north, says Yahweh.

⁴⁸天と地とそのうちにあるすべてのものはバビロンの事で喜び歌う。滅ぼす者が北の方からここに来るからであると主は言われる。

⁴⁹As Babylon has caused the slain of Israel to fall, so at Babylon shall fall the slain of all the land.

⁴⁹イスラエルの殺された者たちのために、バビロンは倒れなければならない、バビロンのために全地の殺された者は倒れたのだ。

⁵⁰You who have escaped the sword, go, don’t stand still; remember Yahweh from afar, and let Jerusalem come into your mind.

⁵⁰つるぎをのがれてきたあなたがたは、行け、立ちとどまってはならない。遠くから主を覚え、エルサレムを心にとめよ。

⁵¹We are confounded, because we have heard reproach; confusion has covered our faces: for strangers have come into the sanctuaries of Yahweh’s house.

⁵¹『われわれはののしりを聞いたので、恥じている。異邦人が主の宮の聖所にはいったので、恥がわれわれの顔をおおった』。

⁵²Therefore behold, the days come, says Yahweh, that I will execute judgment on her engraved images; and through all her land the wounded shall groan.

⁵²主は言われる、それゆえ見よ、わたしがその偶像を罰する日が来る、傷つけられた者が、その全国にうめくようになる。

⁵³Though Babylon should mount up to the sky, and though she should fortify the height of her strength, yet from me shall destroyers come to her, says Yahweh.

⁵³たといバビロンが天に上っても、その城を高くして固めても、滅ぼす者はわたしから出て、これに臨むと主は言われる。

⁵⁴The sound of a cry from Babylon, and of great destruction from the land of the Chaldeans!

⁵⁴聞け、バビロンの叫びを、カルデヤびとの地に起る大いなる滅びの騒ぎ声を。

⁵⁵For Yahweh lays Babylon waste, and destroys out of her the great voice; and their waves roar like many waters; the noise of their voice is uttered:

⁵⁵主がバビロンを滅ぼし、その大いなる声を絶やされるのだ。その波は大水のように鳴りとどろき、その声はひびき渡る。

⁵⁶for the destroyer has come on her, even on Babylon, and her mighty men are taken, their bows are broken in pieces; for Yahweh is a God of recompenses, he will surely requite.

⁵⁶滅ぼす者がこれに臨み、バビロンに来た。その勇士たちは捕えられ、その弓は折られる。主は報いをする神であるから必ず報いられるのだ。

⁵⁷I will make drunk her princes and her wise men, her governors and her deputies, and her mighty men; and they shall sleep a perpetual sleep, and not wake up, says the King, whose name is Yahweh of Armies.

⁵⁷わたしはその君たちと知者たち、おさたち、つかさたち、および勇士たちを酔わせる。彼らは、ながい眠りにいり、目をさますことはない。万軍の主と呼ばれる王がこれを言わせる。

⁵⁸Thus says Yahweh of Armies: The broad walls of Babylon shall be utterly overthrown, and her high gates shall be burned with fire; and the peoples shall labor for vanity, and the nations for the fire; and they shall be weary.

⁵⁸万軍の主はこう言われる、バビロンの広い城壁は地にくずされ、その高い門は火に焼かれる。こうして民の労苦はむなしくなり、国民はただ火のために疲れる」。

⁵⁹The word which Jeremiah the prophet commanded Seraiah the son of Neriah, the son of Mahseiah, when he went with Zedekiah the king of Judah to Babylon in the fourth year of his reign. Now Seraiah was chief quartermaster.

⁵⁹マアセヤの子であるネリヤの子セラヤが、ユダの王ゼデキヤと共に、その治世の四年にバビロンへ行くとき、預言者エレミヤがセラヤに命じた言葉。セラヤは宿営の長であった。

⁶⁰Jeremiah wrote in a book all the evil that should come on Babylon, even all these words that are written concerning Babylon.

⁶⁰エレミヤはバビロンに臨もうとするすべての災を巻物にしるした。これはすなわちバビロンの事についてしるしたすべての言葉である。

⁶¹Jeremiah said to Seraiah, When you come to Babylon, then see that you read all these words,

⁶¹エレミヤはセラヤに言った、「あなたはバビロンへ行ったならば、忘れることなくこのすべての言葉を読み、

⁶²and say, Yahweh, you have spoken concerning this place, to cut it off, that none shall dwell therein, neither man nor animal, but that it shall be desolate forever.

⁶²そして言いなさい、『主よ、あなたはこの所を滅ぼし、人と獣とを問わず、すべてここに住む者のないようにし、永久にここを荒れ地としようと、この所について語られました』と。

⁶³It shall be, when you have made an end of reading this book, that you shall bind a stone to it, and cast it into the midst of the Euphrates:

⁶³あなたがこの巻物を読み終ったならば、これに石をむすびつけてユフラテ川の中に投げこみ、そして言いなさい、『バビロンはこのように沈んで、二度と上がってこない。わたしがこれに災を下すからである』と」。ここまではエレミヤの言葉である。

⁶⁴and you shall say, Thus shall Babylon sink, and shall not rise again because of the evil that I will bring on her; and they shall be weary. Thus far are the words of Jeremiah.

⁶⁴そして言いなさい、『バビロンはこのように沈んで、二度と上がってこない。わたしがこれに災を下すからである』と」。ここまではエレミヤの言葉である。
