¹Joshua the son of Nun secretly sent two men out of Shittim as spies, saying, “Go, view the land, including Jericho.” They went and came into the house of a prostitute whose name was Rahab, and slept there.

²The king of Jericho was told, “Behold, men of the children of Israel came in here tonight to spy out the land.”

²エリコの王に、「イスラエルの人々のうちの数名の者が今夜この地を探るために、はいってきました」と言う者があったので、

³The king of Jericho sent to Rahab, saying, “Bring out the men who have come to you, who have entered into your house; for they have come to spy out all the land.”

³エリコの王は人をやってラハブに言った、「あなたの所にきて、あなたの家にはいった人々をここへ出しなさい。彼らはこの国のすべてを探るためにきたのです」。

⁴The woman took the two men and hid them. Then she said, “Yes, the men came to me, but I didn’t know where they came from.

⁵It happened about the time of the shutting of the gate, when it was dark, that the men went out. Where the men went, I don’t know. Pursue them quickly; for you will overtake them.”

⁵たそがれ時、門の閉じるころに、その人々は出て行きました。どこへ行ったのかわたしは知りません。急いであとを追いなさい。追いつけるでしょう」。

⁶But she had brought them up to the roof, and hid them with the stalks of flax, which she had laid in order on the roof.

⁶その実、彼女はすでに彼らを連れて屋根にのぼり、屋上に並べてあった亜麻の茎の中に彼らを隠していたのである。

⁷The men pursued them the way to the Jordan to the fords: and as soon as those who pursued them had gone out, they shut the gate.

⁷そこでその人々は彼らのあとを追ってヨルダンの道を進み、渡し場へ向かった。あとを追う者が出て行くとすぐ門は閉ざされた。

⁸Before they had laid down, she came up to them on the roof;

⁸ふたりの人がまだ寝ないうち、ラハブは屋上にのぼって彼らの所にきた。

⁹and she said to the men, “I know that Yahweh has given you the land, and that the fear of you has fallen on us, and that all the inhabitants of the land melt away before you.

⁹そして彼らに言った、「主がこの地をあなたがたに賜わったこと、わたしたちがあなたがたをひじょうに恐れていること、そしてこの地の民がみなあなたがたの前に震えおののいていることをわたしは知っています。

¹⁰For we have heard how Yahweh dried up the water of the Red Sea or, Sea of Reeds before you, when you came out of Egypt; and what you did to the two kings of the Amorites, who were beyond the Jordan, to Sihon and to Og, whom you utterly destroyed.

¹⁰あなたがたがエジプトから出てこられた時、主があなたがたの前で紅海の水を干されたこと、およびあなたがたが、ヨルダンの向こう側にいたアモリびとのふたりの王シホンとオグにされたこと、すなわちふたりを、全滅されたことを、わたしたちは聞いたからです。

¹¹As soon as we had heard it, our hearts melted, neither did there remain any more spirit in any man, because of you: for Yahweh your God, he is God in heaven above, and on earth beneath.

¹¹わたしたちはそれを聞くと、心は消え、あなたがたのゆえに人々は全く勇気を失ってしまいました。あなたがたの神、主は上の天にも、下の地にも、神でいらせられるからです。

¹²Now therefore, please swear to me by Yahweh, since I have dealt kindly with you, that you also will deal kindly with my father’s house, and give me a true token;

¹²それで、どうか、わたしがあなたがたを親切に扱ったように、あなたがたも、わたしの父の家を親切に扱われることをいま主をさして誓い、確かなしるしをください。

¹³and that you will save alive my father, my mother, my brothers, and my sisters, and all that they have, and will deliver our lives from death.”

¹³そしてわたしの父母、兄弟、姉妹およびすべて彼らに属するものを生きながらえさせ、わたしたちの命を救って、死を免れさせてください」。

¹⁴The men said to her, “Our life for yours, if you don’t talk about this business of ours; and it shall be, when Yahweh gives us the land, that we will deal kindly and truly with you.”

¹⁴ふたりの人は彼女に言った、「もしあなたがたが、われわれのこのことを他に漏らさないならば、われわれは命にかけて、あなたがたを救います。また主がわれわれにこの地を賜わる時、あなたがたを親切に扱い、真実をつくしましょう」。

¹⁵Then she let them down by a cord through the window; for her house was on the side of the wall, and she lived on the wall.

¹⁵そこでラハブは綱をもって彼らを窓からつりおろした。その家が町の城壁の上に建っていて、彼女はその城壁の上に住んでいたからである。

¹⁶She said to them, “Go to the mountain, lest the pursuers find you; and hide yourselves there three days, until the pursuers have returned. Afterward, you may go your way.”

¹⁶ラハブは彼らに言った、「追手に会わないように、あなたがたは山へ行って、三日の間そこに身を隠し、追手の帰って行くのを待って、それから去って行きなさい」。

¹⁷The men said to her, “We will be guiltless of this your oath which you have made us to swear.

¹⁷ふたりの人は彼女に言った、「あなたがわれわれに誓わせたこの誓いについて、われわれは罪を犯しません。

¹⁸Behold, when we come into the land, you shall bind this line of scarlet thread in the window which you used to let us down. You shall gather to yourself into the house your father, your mother, your brothers, and all your father’s household.

¹⁸われわれがこの地に討ち入る時、わたしたちをつりおろした窓に、この赤い糸のひもを結びつけ、またあなたの父母、兄弟、およびあなたの父の家族をみなあなたの家に集めなさい。

¹⁹It shall be that whoever goes out of the doors of your house into the street, his blood will be on his head, and we will be guiltless. Whoever is with you in the house, his blood shall be on our head, if any hand is on him.

¹⁹ひとりでも家の戸口から外へ出て、血を流されることがあれば、その責めはその人自身のこうべに帰すでしょう。われわれに罪はありません。しかしあなたの家の中にいる人に手をかけて血を流すことがあれば、その責めはわれわれのこうべに帰すでしょう。

²⁰But if you talk about this business of ours, then we shall be guiltless of your oath which you have made us to swear.”

²⁰またあなたが、われわれのこのことを他に漏らすならば、あなたがわれわれに誓わせた誓いについては、われわれに罪はありません」。

²¹She said, “According to your words, so be it.” She sent them away, and they departed. She tied the scarlet line in the window.

²¹ラハブは言った、「あなたがたの仰せのとおりにいたしましょう」。こうして彼らを送り出したので、彼らは去った。そして彼女は赤いひもを窓に結んだ。

²²They went, and came to the mountain, and stayed there three days, until the pursuers had returned. The pursuers sought them throughout all the way, but didn’t find them.

²³Then the two men returned, descended from the mountain, passed over, and came to Joshua the son of Nun; and they told him all that had happened to them.

²³こうしてふたりの人はまた山を下り、川を渡って、ヌンの子ヨシュアのもとにきて、その身に起ったことをつぶさに述べた。そしてヨシュアに言った、「ほんとうに主はこの国をことごとくわれわれの手にお与えになりました。この国の住民はみなわれわれの前に震えおののいています」。

²⁴They said to Joshua, “Truly Yahweh has delivered into our hands all the land. Moreover, all the inhabitants of the land melt away before us.”

²⁴そしてヨシュアに言った、「ほんとうに主はこの国をことごとくわれわれの手にお与えになりました。この国の住民はみなわれわれの前に震えおののいています」。
