¹Then Jesus spoke to the multitudes and to his disciples,

⁴ For they bind heavy burdens that are grievous to be borne, and lay them on men’s shoulders; but they themselves will not lift a finger to help them.

⁷ the salutations in the marketplaces, and to be called ‘Rabbi, Rabbi’ by men.

⁸ But don’t you be called ‘Rabbi,’ for one is your teacher, the Christ, and all of you are brothers.

⁹ Call no man on the earth your father, for one is your Father, he who is in heaven.

¹⁰ Neither be called masters, for one is your master, the Christ.

¹⁰また、あなたがたは教師と呼ばれてはならない。あなたがたの教師はただひとり、すなわち、キリストである。

¹¹ But he who is greatest among you will be your servant.

¹¹そこで、あなたがたのうちでいちばん偉い者は、仕える人でなければならない。

¹² Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.

¹²だれでも自分を高くする者は低くされ、自分を低くする者は高くされるであろう。

¹³ “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you devour widows’ houses, and as a pretense you make long prayers. Therefore you will receive greater condemnation.

¹³偽善な律法学者、パリサイ人たちよ。あなたがたは、わざわいである。あなたがたは、天国を閉ざして人々をはいらせない。自分もはいらないし、はいろうとする人をはいらせもしない。〔

¹⁴ “But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! Because you shut up the Kingdom of Heaven against men; for you don’t enter in yourselves, neither do you allow those who are entering in to enter. Some Greek manuscripts reverse the order of verses 13 and 14, and some omit verse 13, numbering verse 14 as 13.

¹⁴偽善な律法学者、パリサイ人たちよ。あなたがたは、わざわいである。あなたがたは、やもめたちの家を食い倒し、見えのために長い祈をする。だから、もっときびしいさばきを受けるに違いない。〕

¹⁵ Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you travel around by sea and land to make one proselyte; and when he becomes one, you make him twice as much of a son of Gehenna or, Hell as yourselves.

¹⁵偽善な律法学者、パリサイ人たちよ。あなたがたは、わざわいである。あなたがたはひとりの改宗者をつくるために、海と陸とを巡り歩く。そして、つくったなら、彼を自分より倍もひどい地獄の子にする。

¹⁶ “Woe to you, you blind guides, who say, ‘Whoever swears by the temple, it is nothing; but whoever swears by the gold of the temple, he is obligated.’

¹⁶盲目な案内者たちよ。あなたがたは、わざわいである。あなたがたは言う、『神殿をさして誓うなら、そのままでよいが、神殿の黄金をさして誓うなら、果す責任がある』と。

¹⁷ You blind fools! For which is greater, the gold, or the temple that sanctifies the gold?

¹⁷愚かな盲目な人たちよ。黄金と、黄金を神聖にする神殿と、どちらが大事なのか。

¹⁸ ‘Whoever swears by the altar, it is nothing; but whoever swears by the gift that is on it, he is obligated?’

¹⁹ You blind fools! For which is greater, the gift, or the altar that sanctifies the gift?

²⁰ He therefore who swears by the altar, swears by it, and by everything on it.

²³偽善な律法学者、パリサイ人たちよ。あなたがたは、わざわいである。はっか、いのんど、クミンなどの薬味の十分の一を宮に納めておりながら、律法の中でもっと重要な、公平とあわれみと忠実とを見のがしている。それもしなければならないが、これも見のがしてはならない。

²⁴ You blind guides, who strain out a gnat, and swallow a camel!

²⁴盲目な案内者たちよ。あなたがたは、ぶよはこしているが、らくだはのみこんでいる。

²⁵ “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you clean the outside of the cup and of the platter, but within they are full of extortion and unrighteousness. TR reads “self-indulgence” instead of “unrighteousness”

²⁵偽善な律法学者、パリサイ人たちよ。あなたがたは、わざわいである。杯と皿との外側はきよめるが、内側は貪欲と放縦とで満ちている。

²⁶ You blind Pharisee, first clean the inside of the cup and of the platter, that its outside may become clean also.

²⁶盲目なパリサイ人よ。まず、杯の内側をきよめるがよい。そうすれば、外側も清くなるであろう。

²⁷ “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitened tombs, which outwardly appear beautiful, but inwardly are full of dead men’s bones, and of all uncleanness.

²⁷偽善な律法学者、パリサイ人たちよ。あなたがたは、わざわいである。あなたがたは白く塗った墓に似ている。外側は美しく見えるが、内側は死人の骨や、あらゆる不潔なものでいっぱいである。

²⁸ Even so you also outwardly appear righteous to men, but inwardly you are full of hypocrisy and iniquity.

²⁸このようにあなたがたも、外側は人に正しく見えるが、内側は偽善と不法とでいっぱいである。

²⁹ “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you build the tombs of the prophets, and decorate the tombs of the righteous,

²⁹偽善な律法学者、パリサイ人たちよ。あなたがたは、わざわいである。あなたがたは預言者の墓を建て、義人の碑を飾り立てて、こう言っている、

³⁰ and say, ‘If we had lived in the days of our fathers, we wouldn’t have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets.’

³¹ Therefore you testify to yourselves that you are children of those who killed the prophets.

³¹このようにして、あなたがたは預言者を殺した者の子孫であることを、自分で証明している。

³² Fill up, then, the measure of your fathers.

³²あなたがたもまた先祖たちがした悪の枡目を満たすがよい。

³³ You serpents, you offspring of vipers, how will you escape the judgment of Gehenna or, Hell ?

³³へびよ、まむしの子らよ、どうして地獄の刑罰をのがれることができようか。

³⁴ Therefore behold, I send to you prophets, wise men, and scribes. Some of them you will kill and crucify; and some of them you will scourge in your synagogues, and persecute from city to city;

³⁴それだから、わたしは、預言者、知者、律法学者たちをあなたがたにつかわすが、そのうちのある者を殺し、また十字架につけ、そのある者を会堂でむち打ち、また町から町へと迫害して行くであろう。

³⁵ that on you may come all the righteous blood shed on the earth, from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zachariah son of Barachiah, whom you killed between the sanctuary and the altar.

³⁵こうして義人アベルの血から、聖所と祭壇との間であなたがたが殺したバラキヤの子ザカリヤの血に至るまで、地上に流された義人の血の報いが、ことごとくあなたがたに及ぶであろう。

³⁶ Most certainly I tell you, all these things will come upon this generation.

³⁶よく言っておく。これらのことの報いは、みな今の時代に及ぶであろう。

³⁷ “Jerusalem, Jerusalem, who kills the prophets, and stones those who are sent to her! How often I would have gathered your children together, even as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you would not!

³⁷ああ、エルサレム、エルサレム、預言者たちを殺し、おまえにつかわされた人たちを石で打ち殺す者よ。ちょうど、めんどりが翼の下にそのひなを集めるように、わたしはおまえの子らを幾たび集めようとしたことであろう。それだのに、おまえたちは応じようとしなかった。

³⁸ Behold, your house is left to you desolate.

³⁸見よ、おまえたちの家は見捨てられてしまう。わたしは言っておく、『主の御名によってきたる者に、祝福あれ』とおまえたちが言う時までは、今後ふたたび、わたしに会うことはないであろう」。

³⁹ For I tell you, you will not see me from now on, until you say, ‘Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!’” Psalm 118:26

³⁹わたしは言っておく、『主の御名によってきたる者に、祝福あれ』とおまえたちが言う時までは、今後ふたたび、わたしに会うことはないであろう」。
