¹The children of Israel, even the whole congregation, came into the wilderness of Zin in the first month: and the people stayed in Kadesh; and Miriam died there, and was buried there.

¹イスラエルの人々の全会衆は正月になってチンの荒野にはいった。そして民はカデシにとどまったが、ミリアムがそこで死んだので、彼女をそこに葬った。

²There was no water for the congregation: and they assembled themselves together against Moses and against Aaron.

²そのころ会衆は水が得られなかったため、相集まってモーセとアロンに迫った。

³The people strove with Moses, and spoke, saying, “We wish that we had died when our brothers died before Yahweh!

³すなわち民はモーセと争って言った、「さきにわれわれの兄弟たちが主の前に死んだ時、われわれも死んでいたらよかったものを。

⁴Why have you brought the assembly of Yahweh into this wilderness, that we should die there, we and our animals?

⁴なぜ、あなたがたは主の会衆をこの荒野に導いて、われわれと、われわれの家畜とを、ここで死なせようとするのですか。

⁵Why have you made us to come up out of Egypt, to bring us in to this evil place? It is no place of seed, or of figs, or of vines, or of pomegranates; neither is there any water to drink.”

⁵どうしてあなたがたはわれわれをエジプトから上らせて、この悪い所に導き入れたのですか。ここには種をまく所もなく、いちじくもなく、ぶどうもなく、ざくろもなく、また飲む水もありません」。

⁶Moses and Aaron went from the presence of the assembly to the door of the Tent of Meeting, and fell on their faces: and the glory of Yahweh appeared to them.

⁶そこでモーセとアロンは会衆の前を去り、会見の幕屋の入口へ行ってひれ伏した。すると主の栄光が彼らに現れ、

⁷Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying,

⁷主はモーセに言われた、

⁸“Take the rod, and assemble the congregation, you, and Aaron your brother, and speak to the rock before their eyes, that it give forth its water; and you shall bring forth to them water out of the rock; so you shall give the congregation and their livestock drink.”

⁸「あなたは、つえをとり、あなたの兄弟アロンと共に会衆を集め、その目の前で岩に命じて水を出させなさい。こうしてあなたは彼らのために岩から水を出して、会衆とその家畜に飲ませなさい」。

⁹Moses took the rod from before Yahweh, as he commanded him.

⁹モーセは命じられたように主の前にあるつえを取った。

¹⁰Moses and Aaron gathered the assembly together before the rock, and he said to them, “Hear now, you rebels; shall we bring you water out of this rock for you?”

¹⁰モーセはアロンと共に会衆を岩の前に集めて彼らに言った、「そむく人たちよ、聞きなさい。われわれがあなたがたのためにこの岩から水を出さなければならないのであろうか」。

¹¹Moses lifted up his hand, and struck the rock with his rod twice: and water came forth abundantly, and the congregation drank, and their livestock.

¹¹モーセは手をあげ、つえで岩を二度打つと、水がたくさんわき出たので、会衆とその家畜はともに飲んだ。

¹²Yahweh said to Moses and Aaron, “Because you didn’t believe in me, to sanctify me in the eyes of the children of Israel, therefore you shall not bring this assembly into the land which I have given them.”

¹²そのとき主はモーセとアロンに言われた、「あなたがたはわたしを信じないで、イスラエルの人々の前にわたしの聖なることを現さなかったから、この会衆をわたしが彼らに与えた地に導き入れることができないであろう」。

¹³These are the waters of Meribah; because the children of Israel strove with Yahweh, and he was sanctified in them.

¹³これがメリバの水であって、イスラエルの人々はここで主と争ったが、主は自分の聖なることを彼らのうちに現された。

¹⁴Moses sent messengers from Kadesh to the king of Edom, saying: “Thus says your brother Israel: You know all the travail that has happened to us:

¹⁴さて、モーセはカデシからエドムの王に使者をつかわして言った、「あなたの兄弟、イスラエルはこう申します、『あなたはわたしたちが遭遇したすべての患難をご存じです。

¹⁵how our fathers went down into Egypt, and we lived in Egypt a long time; and the Egyptians dealt ill with us, and our fathers:

¹⁵わたしたちの先祖はエジプトに下って行って、わたしたちは年久しくエジプトに住んでいましたが、エジプトびとがわたしたちと、わたしたちの先祖を悩ましたので、

¹⁶and when we cried to Yahweh, he heard our voice, and sent an angel, and brought us forth out of Egypt: and behold, we are in Kadesh, a city in the uttermost of your border.

¹⁶わたしたちが主に呼ばわったとき、主はわたしたちの声を聞き、ひとりの天の使をつかわして、わたしたちをエジプトから導き出されました。わたしたちは今あなたの領地の端にあるカデシの町におります。

¹⁷“Please let us pass through your land: we will not pass through field or through vineyard, neither will we drink of the water of the wells: we will go along the king’s highway; we will not turn aside to the right hand nor to the left, until we have passed your border.”

¹⁷どうぞ、わたしたちにあなたの国を通らせてください。わたしたちは畑もぶどう畑も通りません。また井戸の水も飲みません。ただ王の大路を通り、あなたの領地を過ぎるまでは右にも左にも曲りません』」。

¹⁸Edom said to him, “You shall not pass through me, lest I come out with the sword against you.”

¹⁸しかし、エドムはモーセに言った、「あなたはわたしの領地をとおってはなりません。さもないと、わたしはつるぎをもって出て、あなたに立ちむかうでしょう」。

¹⁹The children of Israel said to him, “We will go up by the highway; and if we drink of your water, I and my livestock, then will I give its price: let me only, without doing anything else, pass through on my feet.”

¹⁹イスラエルの人々はエドムに言った、「わたしたちは大路を通ります。もしわたしたちとわたしたちの家畜とが、あなたの水を飲むことがあれば、その価を払います。わたしは徒歩で通るだけですから何事もないでしょう」。

²⁰He said, “You shall not pass through.” Edom came out against him with many people, and with a strong hand.

²⁰しかし、エドムは「あなたは通ることはなりません」と言って、多くの民と強い軍勢とを率い、出て、これに立ちむかってきた。

²¹Thus Edom refused to give Israel passage through his border, so Israel turned away from him.

²¹このようにエドムはイスラエルに、その領地を通ることを拒んだので、イスラエルはエドムからほかに向かった。

²²They traveled from Kadesh: and the children of Israel, even the whole congregation, came to Mount Hor.

²²こうしてイスラエルの人々の全会衆はカデシから進んでホル山に着いた。

²³Yahweh spoke to Moses and Aaron in Mount Hor, by the border of the land of Edom, saying,

²³主はエドムの国境に近いホル山で、モーセとアロンに言われた、

²⁴“Aaron shall be gathered to his people; for he shall not enter into the land which I have given to the children of Israel, because you rebelled against my word at the waters of Meribah.

²⁴「アロンはその民に連ならなければならない。彼はわたしがイスラエルの人々に与えた地に、はいることができない。これはメリバの水で、あなたがたがわたしの言葉にそむいたからである。

²⁵Take Aaron and Eleazar his son, and bring them up to Mount Hor;

²⁵あなたはアロンとその子エレアザルを連れてホル山に登り、

²⁶and strip Aaron of his garments, and put them on Eleazar his son: and Aaron shall be taken, and shall die there.”

²⁶アロンに衣服を脱がせて、それをその子エレアザルに着せなさい。アロンはそのところで死んで、その民に連なるであろう」。

²⁷Moses did as Yahweh commanded: and they went up into Mount Hor in the sight of all the congregation.

²⁷モーセは主が命じられたとおりにし、連れだって全会衆の目の前でホル山に登った。

²⁸Moses stripped Aaron of his garments, and put them on Eleazar his son; and Aaron died there on the top of the mountain: and Moses and Eleazar came down from the mountain.

²⁸そしてモーセはアロンに衣服を脱がせ、それをその子エレアザルに着せた。アロンはその山の頂で死んだ。そしてモーセとエレアザルは山から下ったが、全会衆がアロンの死んだのを見たとき、イスラエルの全家は三十日の間アロンのために泣いた。

²⁹When all the congregation saw that Aaron was dead, they wept for Aaron thirty days, even all the house of Israel.
