¹Then what advantage does the Jew have? Or what is the profit of circumcision?

¹では、ユダヤ人のすぐれている点は何か。また割礼の益は何か。

²Much in every way! Because first of all, they were entrusted with the oracles of God.

²それは、いろいろの点で数多くある。まず第一に、神の言が彼らにゆだねられたことである。

³For what if some were without faith? Will their lack of faith nullify the faithfulness of God?

³すると、どうなるのか。もし、彼らのうちに不真実の者があったとしたら、その不真実によって、神の真実は無になるであろうか。

⁴May it never be! Yes, let God be found true, but every man a liar. As it is written, “That you might be justified in your words, and might prevail when you come into judgment.” Psalm 51:4

⁴断じてそうではない。あらゆる人を偽り者としても、神を真実なものとすべきである。それは、「あなたが言葉を述べるときは、義とせられ、あなたがさばきを受けるとき、勝利を得るため」と書いてあるとおりである。

⁵But if our unrighteousness commends the righteousness of God, what will we say? Is God unrighteous who inflicts wrath? I speak like men do.

⁵しかし、もしわたしたちの不義が、神の義を明らかにするとしたら、なんと言うべきか。怒りを下す神は、不義であると言うのか（これは人間的な言い方ではある）。

⁶May it never be! For then how will God judge the world?

⁶断じてそうではない。もしそうであったら、神はこの世を、どうさばかれるだろうか。

⁷For if the truth of God through my lie abounded to his glory, why am I also still judged as a sinner?

⁷しかし、もし神の真実が、わたしの偽りによりいっそう明らかにされて、神の栄光となるなら、どうして、わたしはなおも罪人としてさばかれるのだろうか。

⁸Why not (as we are slanderously reported, and as some affirm that we say), “Let us do evil, that good may come?” Those who say so are justly condemned.

⁸むしろ、「善をきたらせるために、わたしたちは悪をしようではないか」（わたしたちがそう言っていると、ある人々はそしっている）。彼らが罰せられるのは当然である。

⁹What then? Are we better than they? No, in no way. For we previously warned both Jews and Greeks, that they are all under sin.

⁹すると、どうなるのか。わたしたちには何かまさったところがあるのか。絶対にない。ユダヤ人もギリシヤ人も、ことごとく罪の下にあることを、わたしたちはすでに指摘した。

¹⁰As it is written, “There is no one righteous; no, not one.

¹⁰次のように書いてある、「義人はいない、ひとりもいない。

¹¹There is no one who understands. There is no one who seeks after God.

¹¹悟りのある人はいない、神を求める人はいない。

¹²They have all turned aside. They have together become unprofitable. There is no one who does good, no, not, so much as one.” Psalms 14:1-3; 53:1-3; Ecclesiastes 7:20

¹²すべての人は迷い出て、ことごとく無益なものになっている。善を行う者はいない、ひとりもいない。

¹³“Their throat is an open tomb. With their tongues they have used deceit.” Psalm 5:9 “The poison of vipers is under their lips”; Psalm 140:3

¹³彼らののどは、開いた墓であり、彼らは、その舌で人を欺き、彼らのくちびるには、まむしの毒があり、

¹⁴“whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness.” Psalm 10:7

¹⁷The way of peace, they haven’t known.” Isaiah 59:7-8

¹⁹Now we know that whatever things the law says, it speaks to those who are under the law, that every mouth may be closed, and all the world may be brought under the judgment of God.

¹⁹さて、わたしたちが知っているように、すべて律法の言うところは、律法のもとにある者たちに対して語られている。それは、すべての口がふさがれ、全世界が神のさばきに服するためである。

²⁰Because by the works of the law, no flesh will be justified in his sight. For through the law comes the knowledge of sin.

²⁰なぜなら、律法を行うことによっては、すべての人間は神の前に義とせられないからである。律法によっては、罪の自覚が生じるのみである。

²¹But now apart from the law, a righteousness of God has been revealed, being testified by the law and the prophets;

²¹しかし今や、神の義が、律法とは別に、しかも律法と預言者とによってあかしされて、現された。

²²even the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ to all and on all those who believe. For there is no distinction,

²²それは、イエス・キリストを信じる信仰による神の義であって、すべて信じる人に与えられるものである。そこにはなんらの差別もない。

²³for all have sinned, and fall short of the glory of God;

²³すなわち、すべての人は罪を犯したため、神の栄光を受けられなくなっており、

²⁴being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus;

²⁴彼らは、価なしに、神の恵みにより、キリスト・イエスによるあがないによって義とされるのである。

²⁵whom God set forth to be an atoning sacrifice or, a propitiation , through faith in his blood, for a demonstration of his righteousness through the passing over of prior sins, in God’s forbearance;

²⁵神はこのキリストを立てて、その血による、信仰をもって受くべきあがないの供え物とされた。それは神の義を示すためであった。すなわち、今までに犯された罪を、神は忍耐をもって見のがしておられたが、

²⁶to demonstrate his righteousness at this present time; that he might himself be just, and the justifier of him who has faith in Jesus.

²⁶それは、今の時に、神の義を示すためであった。こうして、神みずからが義となり、さらに、イエスを信じる者を義とされるのである。

²⁷Where then is the boasting? It is excluded. By what kind of law? Of works? No, but by a law of faith.

²⁷すると、どこにわたしたちの誇があるのか。全くない。なんの法則によってか。行いの法則によってか。そうではなく、信仰の法則によってである。

²⁸We maintain therefore that a man is justified by faith apart from the works of the law.

²⁸わたしたちは、こう思う。人が義とされるのは、律法の行いによるのではなく、信仰によるのである。

²⁹Or is God the God of Jews only? Isn’t he the God of Gentiles also? Yes, of Gentiles also,

²⁹それとも、神はユダヤ人だけの神であろうか。また、異邦人の神であるのではないか。確かに、異邦人の神でもある。

³⁰since indeed there is one God who will justify the circumcised by faith, and the uncircumcised through faith.

³⁰まことに、神は唯一であって、割礼のある者を信仰によって義とし、また、無割礼の者をも信仰のゆえに義とされるのである。すると、信仰のゆえに、わたしたちは律法を無効にするのであるか。断じてそうではない。かえって、それによって律法を確立するのである。

³¹Do we then nullify the law through faith? May it never be! No, we establish the law.
