¹Now a certain man was sick, Lazarus from Bethany, of the village of Mary and her sister, Martha.

²It was that Mary who had anointed the Lord with ointment, and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother, Lazarus, was sick.

²Meryem, ț-țin akken i gdehnen iḍaṛṛen n Sidna Ɛisa s zzit n leɛṭeṛ terna teṣfeḍ-iten s ucebbub-is ; tesɛa gma-s Laɛẓar, yehlek yenṭer.

³The sisters therefore sent to him, saying, “Lord, behold, he for whom you have great affection is sick.”

³Yessetma-s ceggɛent ɣer Sidna Ɛisa a s-inin : A Sidi, atan weḥbib-ik yuḍen.

⁴But when Jesus heard it, he said, “This sickness is not to death, but for the glory of God, that God’s Son may be glorified by it.”

⁴Mi gesla Sidna Ɛisa s lexbaṛ-agi yenna : Lehlak-agi ur yeṣṣawaḍ ara ɣer lmut, lameɛna a d-yesbeggen tamanegt n Ṛebbi ; yis daɣen ara d-tban tmanegt n Mmi-s n Ṛebbi.

⁵Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus.

⁵Sidna Ɛisa iḥemmel aṭas Marṭa, Meryem akk-d Laɛẓar.

⁶When therefore he heard that he was sick, he stayed two days in the place where he was.

⁶?as akken yesla s Laɛẓar yuḍen , yerna sin wussan deg wemkan-nni anda yella.

⁷Then after this he said to the disciples, “Let’s go into Judea again.”

⁷Dɣa yenna i inelmaden-is : Eyyaw a nuɣalet ɣer tmurt n Yahuda.

⁸The disciples told him, “Rabbi, the Jews were just trying to stone you, and are you going there again?”

⁸Nnan-as : A Sidi, mačči aṭas aya segmi țnadin wat Isṛail a k-nɣen s iblaḍen, tura tebɣiḍ aț-țuɣaleḍ ɣer dinna ?

⁹Jesus answered, “Aren’t there twelve hours of daylight? If a man walks in the day, he doesn’t stumble, because he sees the light of this world.

⁹Sidna Ɛisa yerra-yasen : Eɛni ur llint ara tnac n swayeɛ deg wass ? Ma ileḥḥu yiwen deg wass ur t-kkaten ara wuguren axaṭer tella tafat, yețwali abrid.

¹⁰ But if a man walks in the night, he stumbles, because the light isn’t in him.”

¹⁰Lameɛna ma ileḥḥu deg iḍ ad imḍerkal axaṭer ulac tafat.

¹¹He said these things, and after that, he said to them, “Our friend, Lazarus, has fallen asleep, but I am going so that I may awake him out of sleep.”

¹¹Mi d-yenna ayagi, yerna yenna yasen : Aḥbib-nneɣ Laɛẓar tewwi-t tnafa, ad ṛuḥeɣ a t-id-ssakiɣ.

¹²The disciples therefore said, “Lord, if he has fallen asleep, he will recover.”

¹²?ef wayagi inelmaden-is nnan as : A Sidi, ma ț-țaguni i geṭṭes ihi a d-yekker.

¹³Now Jesus had spoken of his death, but they thought that he spoke of taking rest in sleep.

¹³Sidna Ɛisa yenna-d ayagi ɣef lmut n Laɛẓar, nutni nwan ɣef tguni i d-yemmeslay.

¹⁴So Jesus said to them plainly then, “Lazarus is dead.

¹⁴Dɣa yenna-yasen ɛinani : Laɛẓar yemmut,

¹⁵ I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, so that you may believe. Nevertheless, let’s go to him.”

¹⁵yerna feṛḥeɣ ɣef ddemma-nwen imi ur lliɣ ara dinna di teswiɛt-nni, axaṭer ayagi d ayen ara yernun di liman-nwen. Eyyaw tura a nṛuḥet ɣuṛ-es.

¹⁶Thomas therefore, who is called Didymus, “Didymus” means “Twin” said to his fellow disciples, “Let’s go also, that we may die with him.”

¹⁶?uma iwumi qqaṛen Akniw, yenna i inelmaden nniḍen : Eyyaw a neddut ula d nukkni iwakken a nemmet yid-es.

¹⁷So when Jesus came, he found that he had been in the tomb four days already.

¹⁷Mi qṛib ad yaweḍ ɣer dinna, Sidna Ɛisa yesla belli ṛebɛa wussan aya segmi i meḍlen Laɛẓar.

¹⁸Now Bethany was near Jerusalem, about fifteen stadia 15 stadia is about 2.8 kilometers or 1.7 miles away.

¹⁸Ad ilin wazal n tlata alaf kilumitrat ger taddart n Bitanya ț-țemdint n Lquds.

¹⁹Many of the Jews had joined the women around Martha and Mary, to console them concerning their brother.

¹⁹Daymi aṭas n lɣaci i d-yusan ɣer Marṭa d Meryem a tent-ṣebbṛen ɣef lmut n gma-tsent.

²⁰Then when Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went and met him, but Mary stayed in the house.

²⁰Akken kan i tesla Marṭa belli Sidna Ɛisa iteddu-d ɣer taddart, tuzzel ɣuṛ-es a t-temmager. Ma d Meryem teqqim deg wexxam.

²¹Therefore Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if you would have been here, my brother wouldn’t have died.

²¹Marṭa tenna i Sidna Ɛisa : A Sidi, lemmer dagi i telliḍ, tili gma ur yemmut ara.

²²Even now I know that, whatever you ask of God, God will give you.”

²²Lameɛna ẓriɣ ula ț-țura, ayen akk ara tessutreḍ i Ṛebbi a k-t-id-yeqbel.

²³Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise again.”

²³Sidna Ɛisa yenna-yas : Gma-m a d-yuɣal ɣer tudert.

²⁴Martha said to him, “I know that he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day.”

²⁴Marṭa terra-yas : ?riɣ a d-yuɣal ɣer tudert ass aneggaru, ass n ḥeggu n lmegtin.

²⁵Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will still live, even if he dies.

²⁵Sidna Ɛisa yenna-yas : D nekk i d ḥeggu, d nekk i ț-țudert. Win ara yesɛun laman deg-i, ad yidir ɣas ma yemmut.

²⁶ Whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?”

²⁶Yal amdan yeddren, yumnen yis-i, ur yețmețțat ara maḍi. Tumneḍ s wannect-agi ?

²⁷She said to him, “Yes, Lord. I have come to believe that you are the Christ, God’s Son, he who comes into the world.”

²⁷Marṭa tenna-yas : Umneɣ a Sidi, d kečč i d Lmasiḥ, d kečč i d Mmi-s n Ṛebbi, win akken ara d-yasen ɣer ddunit.

²⁸When she had said this, she went away, and called Mary, her sister, secretly, saying, “The Teacher is here, and is calling you.”

²⁸Syenna, Marṭa tṛuḥ tessawel i weltma-s Meryem tenna-yas s tuffra : Sidna Ɛisa yewweḍ-ed, yebɣa a kem-iẓer.

²⁹When she heard this, she arose quickly, and went to him.

²⁹Mi tesla s lexbaṛ-agi, tekker Meryem tuzzel ɣer Sidna Ɛisa.

³⁰Now Jesus had not yet come into the village, but was in the place where Martha met him.

³⁰Yuɣ lḥal urɛad i d-yekcim ɣer taddart, mazal-it deg umkan-nni anda akken i t-temmuger Marṭa.

³¹Then the Jews who were with her in the house, and were consoling her, when they saw Mary, that she rose up quickly and went out, followed her, saying, “She is going to the tomb to weep there.”

³¹Wid yellan țṣebbiṛen deg-s deg wexxam, mi ț-walan tekker teffeɣ s tazzla, ḍefṛen-ț, nwan ɣer u?ekka i tṛuḥ iwakken aț-țețru ɣef gma-s.

³²Therefore when Mary came to where Jesus was, and saw him, she fell down at his feet, saying to him, “Lord, if you would have been here, my brother wouldn’t have died.”

³²Mi tewweḍ Meryem ɣer wemkan anda yella Sidna Ɛisa, akken kan i t-twala, teɣli ɣer iḍaṛṛen-is tenna : A Sidi, lemmer dagi i telliḍ tili gma ur yemmut ara.

³³When Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and the Jews weeping who came with her, he groaned in the spirit, and was troubled,

³³Mi ț-iwala tețru nețțat d wid yellan yid-es, Sidna Ɛisa ijreḥ wul-is, tergagi tasa-s.

³⁴and said, “Where have you laid him?” They told him, “Lord, come and see.”

³⁴Yenna-yasen : Anda i t-tmeḍlem ? Nutni rran-as : Eyya-d aț-țwaliḍ a Sidi.

³⁵Jesus wept.

³⁵Dɣa Sidna Ɛisa yețru.

³⁶The Jews therefore said, “See how much affection he had for him!”

³⁶Mi t-walan yețru, nnan : Walit acḥal i t-iḥemmel !

³⁷Some of them said, “Couldn’t this man, who opened the eyes of him who was blind, have also kept this man from dying?”

³⁷Ma d kra deg-sen qqaṛen : Nețța i d-yerran iẓri i uderɣal, ur yezmir ara ad issemneɛ Laɛẓar si lmut !

³⁸Jesus therefore, again groaning in himself, came to the tomb. Now it was a cave, and a stone lay against it.

³⁸Sidna Ɛisa tejreḥ tasa-s tikkelt tis snat. Mi wwḍen ɣer u?ekka yellan d lɣaṛ imedlen s yiwen wezṛu d ameqqran,

³⁹Jesus said, “Take away the stone.” Martha, the sister of him who was dead, said to him, “Lord, by this time there is a stench, for he has been dead four days.”

³⁹Sidna Ɛisa yenna : Kkset azṛu-yagi ! Marṭa weltma-s n lmegget-nni tenna : A Sidi, ṛebɛa wussan aya segmi yețwamḍel, ad yili yebda yețriḥ !

⁴⁰Jesus said to her, “Didn’t I tell you that if you believed, you would see God’s glory?”

⁴⁰Sidna Ɛisa yerra-yas : Ur am-d-nniɣ ara ma tumneḍ aț-țwaliḍ tamanegt n Ṛebbi ?

⁴¹So they took away the stone from the place where the dead man was lying. NU omits “from the place where the dead man was lying.” Jesus lifted up his eyes, and said, “Father, I thank you that you listened to me.

⁴¹Kksen azṛu-nni, dɣa Sidna Ɛisa yerfed allen-is ɣer igenni yenna : Tanemmirt-ik a Baba Ṛebbi axaṭer tqebleḍ taẓallit-iw.

⁴² I know that you always listen to me, but because of the multitude that stands around I said this, that they may believe that you sent me.”

⁴²Nekkini ẓriɣ tqebbleḍ-iyi daymen, lameɛna nniɣ-ed akka ɣef ddemma n wid i yi-d-yezzin dagi iwakken ad amnen belli d kečč i yi-d-iceggɛen.

⁴³When he had said this, he cried with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!”

⁴³Imiren kan iɛeggeḍ s lǧehd yenna : A Laɛẓar, effeɣ-ed syenna !

⁴⁴He who was dead came out, bound hand and foot with wrappings, and his face was wrapped around with a cloth. Jesus said to them, “Free him, and let him go.”

⁴⁴Ataya lmegget-nni yeffeɣ-ed seg uẓekka, idaṛṛen-is d ifassen-is țțlen, udem-is iɣumm s lekfen. Sidna Ɛisa yenna i wid yellan dinna : Kkset-as lekfen, teǧǧem-t ad iṛuḥ !

⁴⁵Therefore many of the Jews, who came to Mary and saw what Jesus did, believed in him.

⁴⁵Aṭas seg widak-nni i d-yeddan d Meryem umnen s Sidna Ɛisa mi walan ayen yexdem.

⁴⁶But some of them went away to the Pharisees, and told them the things which Jesus had done.

⁴⁶Kra deg-sen ṛuḥen ɣer ifariziyen ṣṣawḍen-asen lexbaṛ.

⁴⁷The chief priests therefore and the Pharisees gathered a council, and said, “What are we doing? For this man does many signs.

⁴⁷Lmuqedmin imeqqranen d ifariziyen nnejmaɛen deg wexxam n ccṛeɛ, nnan : D acu ara nexdem ? Argaz-agi yexdem aṭas n lbeṛhanat,

⁴⁸If we leave him alone like this, everyone will believe in him, and the Romans will come and take away both our place and our nation.”

⁴⁸ma neǧǧa-t ad ikemmel akka, lɣaci akk ad amnen yis ; a d-asen iṛumaniyen a ɣ-hudden lǧameɛ-nneɣ ț-țmurt-nneɣ.

⁴⁹But a certain one of them, Caiaphas, being high priest that year, said to them, “You know nothing at all,

⁴⁹Kayef yellan aseggas-nni d lmuqeddem ameqqran fell-asen,

⁵⁰nor do you consider that it is advantageous for us that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation not perish.”

⁵⁰yenṭeq yenna-yasen : Ur teẓrim ara belli ad yemmet axiṛ yiwen ɣef lumma wala ad yenger wegdud-nneɣ ?

⁵¹Now he didn’t say this of himself, but being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus would die for the nation,

⁵¹Ayagi mačči s ɣuṛ-es i d-yekka meɛna imi i gella d lmuqeddem ameqqran aseggas-nni. Daymi i s-d-iweḥḥa Sidi Ṛebbi belli ilaq ad immet Sidna Ɛisa ɣef wegdud.

⁵²and not for the nation only, but that he might also gather together into one the children of God who are scattered abroad.

⁵²Mačči kan ɣef wegdud-is ara yemmet meɛna akken ad isdukkel arraw n Ṛebbi i gemzerwaɛen di ddunit meṛṛa, a ten-yejmeɛ d yiwen wegdud.

⁵³So from that day forward they took counsel that they might put him to death.

⁵³Ass-nni dɣa i ɛewwlen ( qesden ) lmuqedmin imeqqranen ad nɣen Sidna Ɛisa.

⁵⁴Jesus therefore walked no more openly among the Jews, but departed from there into the country near the wilderness, to a city called Ephraim. He stayed there with his disciples.

⁵⁴Seg wass-nni, Sidna Ɛisa yejbed iman-is ɣef lɣaci. Iṛuḥ Syenna ɣer taddart n Ifṛahim i d-yezgan ț-țama unezṛuf, yesɛedda dinna kra n wussan nețța d inelmaden is.

⁵⁵Now the Passover of the Jews was at hand. Many went up from the country to Jerusalem before the Passover, to purify themselves.

⁵⁵Akken i d-iqeṛṛeb lɛid n Tfaska, aṭas n lɣaci i d-ițasen si mkul tamurt ɣer temdint n Lquds akken ad ssizedegen iman-nsen.

⁵⁶Then they sought for Jesus and spoke one with another, as they stood in the temple, “What do you think—that he isn’t coming to the feast at all?”

⁵⁶Lɣaci-nni țqelliben ɣef Sidna Ɛisa, țmesteqsayen deg ufrag n lǧameɛ, qqaṛen : D acu i twalam ? A d-yas ad iɛeggeḍ ?

⁵⁷Now the chief priests and the Pharisees had commanded that if anyone knew where he was, he should report it, that they might seize him.

⁵⁷Yuɣ lḥal lmuqedmin imeqqranen d ifariziyen nebhen-d nnan : Win yeẓran anda yella Ɛisa-nni, ilaq a d-yessiweḍ lexbaṛ i yiɛessasen akken a t-ṭṭfen.
