¹Ahab told Jezebel all that Elijah had done, and how he had killed all the prophets with the sword.

³When he saw that, he arose, and went for his life, and came to Beersheba, which belongs to Judah, and left his servant there.

⁴But he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a juniper tree: and he requested for himself that he might die, and said, “It is enough. Now, O Yahweh, take away my life; for I am not better than my fathers.”

⁴og selv gikk han en dagsreise ut i ørkenen; der satte han sig under en gyvelbusk, og han ønsket sig døden og sa: Det er nok; ta nu mitt liv, Herre! For jeg er ikke bedre enn mine fedre.

⁵He lay down and slept under a juniper tree; and behold, an angel touched him, and said to him, “Arise and eat!”

⁵Så la han sig ned og sov inn under en gyvelbusk; da rørte en engel ved ham og sa til ham: Stå op og et!

⁶He looked, and behold, there was at his head a cake baked on the coals, and a jar of water. He ate and drank, and lay down again.

⁶Og da han så til, fikk han se at det ved hans hodegjerde lå en kake, stekt på hete stener, og at det stod en krukke med vann; og han åt og drakk og la sig ned igjen.

⁷The angel of Yahweh came again the second time, and touched him, and said, “Arise and eat, because the journey is too great for you.”

⁷Men Herrens engel kom igjen annen gang og rørte ved ham og sa: Stå op og et! Ellers blir veien dig for lang.

⁸He arose, and ate and drank, and went in the strength of that food forty days and forty nights to Horeb the Mount of God.

⁸Da stod han op og åt og drakk; og styrket ved denne mat gikk han firti dager og firti netter, til han kom til Guds berg, Horeb.

⁹He came there to a cave, and lodged there; and behold, the word of Yahweh came to him, and he said to him, “What are you doing here, Elijah?”

⁹Der gikk han inn i hulen* og blev der om natten. Da kom Herrens ord til ham; han sa til ham: Hvad vil du her, Elias? / {* 2MO 33, 22.}

¹⁰He said, “I have been very jealous for Yahweh, the God of Armies; for the children of Israel have forsaken your covenant, thrown down your altars, and slain your prophets with the sword. I, even I only, am left; and they seek my life, to take it away.”

¹⁰Han svarte: Jeg har vært nidkjær for Herren, hærskarenes Gud; for Israels barn har forlatt din pakt; dine alter har de revet ned, og dine profeter har de drept med sverdet; jeg er alene tilbake, og de står mig efter livet.

¹¹He said, “Go out, and stand on the mountain before Yahweh.” Behold, Yahweh passed by, and a great and strong wind tore the mountains, and broke in pieces the rocks before Yahweh; but Yahweh was not in the wind. After the wind an earthquake; but Yahweh was not in the earthquake.

¹¹Han sa: Gå ut og stå på fjellet for Herrens åsyn! Da gikk Herren forbi der, og det kom en stor og sterk storm som sønderrev fjell og knuste klipper foran Herren, men Herren var ikke i stormen; og efter stormen kom et jordskjelv, men Herren var ikke i jordskjelvet;

¹²After the earthquake a fire passed; but Yahweh was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice.

¹²og efter jordskjelvet kom en ild, men Herren var ikke i ilden; og efter ilden kom lyden av en stille susen.

¹³It was so, when Elijah heard it, that he wrapped his face in his mantle, and went out, and stood in the entrance of the cave. Behold, a voice came to him, and said, “What are you doing here, Elijah?”

¹³Og da Elias hørte den, dekket han sitt ansikt til med sin kappe og gikk ut og stod ved inngangen til hulen. Da kom det en røst til ham og sa: Hvad vil du her, Elias?

¹⁵Yahweh said to him, “Go, return on your way to the wilderness of Damascus. When you arrive, you shall anoint Hazael to be king over Syria.

¹⁵Da sa Herren til ham: Gå tilbake igjen og ta veien til ørkenen ved Damaskus og gå inn i byen og salv Hasael til konge over Syria!

¹⁶You shall anoint Jehu the son of Nimshi to be king over Israel; and you shall anoint Elisha the son of Shaphat of Abel Meholah to be prophet in your place.

¹⁶Og Jehu, Nimsis sønn, skal du salve til konge over Israel, og Elisa, Safats sønn, fra Abel-Mehola, skal du salve til profet i ditt sted.

¹⁷It shall happen, that he who escapes from the sword of Hazael, Jehu will kill; and he who escapes from the sword of Jehu, Elisha will kill.

¹⁷Og det skal gå så, at den som slipper unda Hasaels sverd, skal Jehu drepe, og den som slipper unda Jehus sverd, skal Elisa drepe.

¹⁸Yet will I leave seven thousand in Israel, all the knees which have not bowed to Baal, and every mouth which has not kissed him.”

¹⁸Men jeg vil la syv tusen bli tilbake i Israel, alle som ikke har bøid kne for Ba'al, og alle som ikke har kysset ham med sin munn.

¹⁹So he departed there, and found Elisha the son of Shaphat, who was plowing, with twelve yoke of oxen before him, and he with the twelfth: and Elijah passed over to him, and cast his mantle on him.

²⁰He left the oxen, and ran after Elijah, and said, “Let me please kiss my father and my mother, and then I will follow you.” He said to him, “Go back again; for what have I done to you?”

²⁰Da forlot han oksene og sprang efter Elias og sa: La mig først få kysse min far og min mor, så vil jeg følge dig! Han svarte: Vel, gå hjem! For hvad har jeg vel gjort med dig?

²¹He returned from following him, and took the yoke of oxen, and killed them, and boiled their flesh with the instruments of the oxen, and gave to the people, and they ate. Then he arose, and went after Elijah, and served him.

²¹Så forlot han ham og gikk hjem; han tok de to okser* og slaktet dem, og med oksenes åk kokte han kjøttet og gav det til folket der, og de åt. Så gjorde han sig rede og fulgte Elias og tjente ham. / {* dem han hadde pløid med.}
