¹After these things, and this faithfulness, Sennacherib king of Assyria came, and entered into Judah, and encamped against the fortified cities, and thought to win them for himself.

¹Nogen tid efterat Esekias hadde utført dette og vist sådan troskap, kom kongen i Assyria Sankerib og drog inn i Juda; han kringsatte de faste byer og tenkte han skulde få dem i sin makt.

²When Hezekiah saw that Sennacherib had come, and that he was purposed to fight against Jerusalem,

²Da Esekias fikk vite at Sankerib var kommet og hadde i sinne å angripe Jerusalem,

³he took counsel with his princes and his mighty men to stop the waters of the springs which were outside of the city; and they helped him.

⁴So many people gathered together, and they stopped all the springs, and the brook that flowed through the midst of the land, saying, “Why should the kings of Assyria come, and find much water?”

⁴Det samlet sig da meget folk, og de tilstoppet alle kildene og den bekk som rant midt igjennem landet; for de sa: Hvorfor skulde assyrerkongene komme og finne rikelig vann?

⁵He took courage, and built up all the wall that was broken down, and raised it up to the towers, and the other wall outside, and strengthened Millo in the city of David, and made weapons and shields in abundance.

⁵Så tok han mot til sig og bygget op igjen hele den mur som var revet ned, og førte den helt op til tårnene, og utenfor bygget han en annen mur; han satte også Millo i Davids stad i fast stand og lot gjøre kastevåben i mengde og skjold.

⁶He set captains of war over the people, and gathered them together to him in the broad place at the gate of the city, and spoke comfortably to them, saying,

⁶Og han satte krigshøvedsmenn over folket og samlet dem hos sig på plasser ved byporten og talte til dem for å vekke deres mot og sa:

⁷“Be strong and courageous, don’t be afraid nor dismayed for the king of Assyria, nor for all the multitude who is with him; for there is a greater with us than with him.

⁷Vær frimodige og sterke, frykt ikke og reddes ikke for kongen i Assyria og hele den hær han har med sig! For med oss er der en større enn der er med ham;

⁸With him is an arm of flesh; but with us is Yahweh our God to help us, and to fight our battles.” The people rested themselves on the words of Hezekiah king of Judah.

⁸med ham er en arm av kjød, men med oss er Herren vår Gud, og han skal hjelpe oss og føre våre kriger. Og folket stolte på Esekias' Judas konges ord.

⁹After this, Sennacherib king of Assyria sent his servants to Jerusalem, (now he was before Lachish, and all his power with him), to Hezekiah king of Judah, and to all Judah who were at Jerusalem, saying,

⁹Derefter sendte kongen i Assyria Sankerib, som selv lå for Lakis med hele sin krigsmakt, sine tjenere til Jerusalem, til Judas konge Esekias og til alle dem av Juda som var i Jerusalem, og lot si:

¹⁰Thus says Sennacherib king of Assyria, “In whom do you trust, that you remain under siege in Jerusalem?

¹⁰Så sier Sankerib, kongen i Assyria: Hvad er det I setter eders lit til, siden I blir sittende innestengt i Jerusalem!

¹¹Doesn’t Hezekiah persuade you, to give you over to die by famine and by thirst, saying, ‘Yahweh our God will deliver us out of the hand of the king of Assyria?’

¹¹Esekias forfører eder bare for å la eder dø av hunger og tørst, når han sier: Herren vår Gud skal redde oss av assyrerkongens hånd.

¹²Hasn’t the same Hezekiah taken away his high places and his altars, and commanded Judah and Jerusalem, saying, ‘You shall worship before one altar, and on it you shall burn incense?’

¹²Har ikke denne Esekias tatt hans offerhauger og hans altere bort og sagt til Juda og Jerusalem: Bare foran ett alter skal I tilbede, og på det skal I brenne røkelse?

¹³Don’t you know what I and my fathers have done to all the peoples of the lands? Were the gods of the nations of the lands in any way able to deliver their land out of my hand?

¹³Vet I ikke hvad jeg har gjort, jeg og mine fedre, med alle folkene rundt om i landene? Har vel de guder som dyrkes av folkene rundt om i landene, maktet å redde sine land av min hånd?

¹⁴Who was there among all the gods of those nations which my fathers utterly destroyed, that could deliver his people out of my hand, that your God should be able to deliver you out of my hand?

¹⁴Hvem av alle gudene hos disse folk som mine fedre har utryddet, er det som har maktet å redde sitt folk av min hånd, og så skulde eders Gud makte å redde eder av min hånd?

¹⁵Now therefore don’t let Hezekiah deceive you, nor persuade you in this way, neither believe him; for no god of any nation or kingdom was able to deliver his people out of my hand, and out of the hand of my fathers. How much less will your God deliver you out of my hand?”

¹⁵Så la nu ikke Esekias få narret eder! La ham ikke således forføre eder! Tro ham ikke! For ingen gud hos noget folk eller rike har maktet å redde sitt folk av min hånd eller av mine fedres hånd; hvor meget mindre vil da eders guder kunne redde eder av min hånd!

¹⁶His servants spoke yet more against Yahweh God, and against his servant Hezekiah.

¹⁶Og ennu flere ord talte hans tjenere mot Gud Herren og mot hans tjener Esekias.

¹⁷He also wrote letters insulting Yahweh, the God of Israel, and to speak against him, saying, “As the gods of the nations of the lands, which have not delivered their people out of my hand, so shall the God of Hezekiah not deliver his people out of my hand.”

¹⁷Han skrev også et brev for å håne Herren, Israels Gud, og tale mot ham; i det stod det: Likesom folkenes guder rundt om i landene ikke har reddet sine folk av min hånd, således skal heller ikke Esekias' Gud redde sitt folk av min hånd.

¹⁸They cried with a loud voice in the Jews’ language to the people of Jerusalem who were on the wall, to frighten them, and to trouble them; that they might take the city.

¹⁸Og de ropte med høi røst på jødisk til folket i Jerusalem som stod på muren, for å skremme og forferde dem, så de kunde innta byen;

¹⁹They spoke of the God of Jerusalem, as of the gods of the peoples of the earth, which are the work of men’s hands.

¹⁹og de talte om Jerusalems Gud på samme vis som om folkenes guder på jorden, de som er et verk av menneskehender.

²⁰Hezekiah the king, and Isaiah the prophet the son of Amoz, prayed because of this, and cried to heaven.

²⁰Da kong Esekias og profeten Esaias, Amos' sønn hørte dette, bad de og ropte til himmelen.

²¹Yahweh sent an angel, who cut off all the mighty men of valor, and the leaders and captains, in the camp of the king of Assyria. So he returned with shame of face to his own land. When he had come into the house of his god, those who came forth from his own bowels killed him there with the sword.

²¹Og Herren sendte en engel som tilintetgjorde alle de djerve stridsmenn og fyrstene og høvedsmennene i assyrerkongens leir, så han med skam måtte vende tilbake til sitt land. Og da han engang gikk inn i sin guds hus, kom nogen av hans egne sønner og hugg ham ned der med sverdet.

²²Thus Yahweh saved Hezekiah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem from the hand of Sennacherib the king of Assyria, and from the hand of all others, and guided them on every side.

²²Således frelste Herren Esekias og Jerusalems innbyggere av assyrerkongen Sankeribs hånd og av alle andre fienders hånd og vernet dem til alle sider.

²³Many brought gifts to Yahweh to Jerusalem, and precious things to Hezekiah king of Judah; so that he was exalted in the sight of all nations from thenceforth.

²³Det var mange som kom til Jerusalem med gaver til Herren og med kostbare ting til Judas konge Esekias; og han blev efter dette høit æret blandt alle folk.

²⁴In those days Hezekiah was sick even to death: and he prayed to Yahweh; and he spoke to him, and gave him a sign.

²⁴Ved den tid blev Esekias dødssyk; da bad han til Herren, og Herren svarte ham og gav ham et underfullt tegn.

²⁵But Hezekiah didn’t render again according to the benefit done to him; for his heart was lifted up: therefore there was wrath on him, and on Judah and Jerusalem.

²⁵Men Esekias gjengjeldte ikke den velgjerning som var vist ham; han blev overmodig i sitt hjerte, og det kom vrede over ham og over Juda og Jerusalem.

²⁶Notwithstanding Hezekiah humbled himself for the pride of his heart, both he and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so that the wrath of Yahweh didn’t come on them in the days of Hezekiah.

²⁶Da ydmyket Esekias sig, fordi han hadde vært overmodig i sitt hjerte, og det samme gjorde Jerusalems innbyggere; derfor kom Herrens vrede ikke over dem så lenge Esekias levde.

²⁷Hezekiah had exceeding much riches and honor: and he provided him treasuries for silver, and for gold, and for precious stones, and for spices, and for shields, and for all kinds of goodly vessels;

²⁷Esekias hadde overmåte stor rikdom og ære; han gjorde sig skattkammere, hvor han gjemte sølv og gull og dyre stener og krydderier og skjold og alle slags kostbare ting;

²⁸storehouses also for the increase of grain and new wine and oil; and stalls for all kinds of animals, and flocks in folds.

²⁸og han gjorde sig forrådshus for det som blev avlet av korn og most og olje, og fjøs for alle slags fe, og han la sig til buskap for sine fjøs.

²⁹Moreover he provided him cities, and possessions of flocks and herds in abundance; for God had given him very much substance.

²⁹Likeledes bygget han byer og fikk sig en mengde med småfe og storfe; for Gud hadde gitt ham overmåte meget gods.

³⁰This same Hezekiah also stopped the upper spring of the waters of Gihon, and brought them straight down on the west side of the city of David. Hezekiah prospered in all his works.

³⁰Det var også Esekias som tilstoppet det øvre utløp av Gihonvannet og ledet det ned vestenfor Davids stad. I alt det han tok sig fore, hadde han lykke med sig,

³¹However concerning the ambassadors of the princes of Babylon, who sent to him to inquire of the wonder that was done in the land, God left him, to try him, that he might know all that was in his heart.

³¹således også da sendemennene kom fra Babels fyrster, som sendte bud til ham for å spørre om det underfulle tegn som var skjedd i landet; Gud forlot ham bare for å sette ham på prøve og for å kjenne alt hvad som var i hans hjerte*. / {* 5MO 8, 2.}

³²Now the rest of the acts of Hezekiah, and his good deeds, behold, they are written in the vision of Isaiah the prophet the son of Amoz, in the book of the kings of Judah and Israel.

³²Hvad som ellers er å fortelle om Esekias og hans fromme gjerninger, det er opskrevet i profeten Esaias', Amos' sønns syn i boken om Judas og Israels konger.

³³Hezekiah slept with his fathers, and they buried him in the ascent of the tombs of the sons of David: and all Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem did him honor at his death. Manasseh his son reigned in his place.

³³Og Esekias la sig til hvile hos sine fedre, og de begravde ham ved opgangen til Davids efterkommeres graver. Hele Juda og Jerusalems innbyggere viste ham stor ære ved hans død. Og hans sønn Manasse blev konge i hans sted.
