¹Josiah was eight years old when he began to reign; and he reigned thirty-one years in Jerusalem: and his mother’s name was Jedidah the daughter of Adaiah of Bozkath.

¹Josias var åtte år gammel da han blev konge, og han regjerte en og tretti år i Jerusalem; hans mor hette Jedida; hun var datter av Adaja og var fra Boskat.

²He did that which was right in the eyes of Yahweh, and walked in all the way of David his father, and didn’t turn aside to the right hand or to the left.

²Han gjorde hvad rett var i Herrens øine, og vandret i alle deler på sin far Davids vei; han vek ikke av hverken til høire eller til venstre.

³It happened in the eighteenth year of king Josiah, that the king sent Shaphan, the son of Azaliah the son of Meshullam, the scribe, to the house of Yahweh, saying,

³I kong Josias' attende år hendte det at kongen sendte statsskriveren Safan, sønn av Asalja, Mesullams sønn, til Herrens hus og sa:

⁴“Go up to Hilkiah the high priest, that he may sum the money which is brought into the house of Yahweh, which the keepers of the threshold have gathered of the people.

⁴Gå op til ypperstepresten Hilkias og be ham telle sammen alle de penger som er kommet inn til Herrens hus, og som vokterne ved dørtreskelen har samlet inn hos folket,

⁵Let them deliver it into the hand of the workmen who have the oversight of the house of Yahweh; and let them give it to the workmen who are in the house of Yahweh, to repair the breaches of the house,

⁵og overgi dem til dem som forestår arbeidet og har tilsyn med Herrens hus, forat de igjen kan gi dem til dem som utfører arbeidet - dem som arbeider i Herrens hus for å bøte husets brøst,

⁶to the carpenters, and to the builders, and to the masons, and for buying timber and cut stone to repair the house.

⁶til tømmermennene og bygningsmennene og murerne, og likeså til innkjøp av tre og hugne stener for å sette huset i stand.

⁷However there was no accounting made with them of the money that was delivered into their hand; for they dealt faithfully.”

⁷Men det skal ikke holdes regnskap med dem for de penger som overgis til dem; for de farer redelig frem.

⁸Hilkiah the high priest said to Shaphan the scribe, “I have found the book of the law in the house of Yahweh.” Hilkiah delivered the book to Shaphan, and he read it.

⁸Da sa ypperstepresten Hilkias til statsskriveren Safan: Jeg har funnet lovboken i Herrens hus. Og Hilkias gav boken til Safan, og han leste den.

⁹Shaphan the scribe came to the king, and brought the king word again, and said, “Your servants have emptied out the money that was found in the house, and have delivered it into the hand of the workmen who have the oversight of the house of Yahweh.”

⁹Så kom statsskriveren Safan tilbake til kongen og meldte: Dine tjenere har tømt ut de penger som fantes i huset, og overgitt dem til dem som forestår arbeidet og har tilsyn med Herrens hus.

¹⁰Shaphan the scribe told the king, saying, “Hilkiah the priest has delivered a book to me.” Shaphan read it before the king.

¹⁰Og statsskriveren Safan fortalte kongen at presten Hilkias hadde gitt ham en bok. Og Safan leste den for kongen.

¹¹It happened, when the king had heard the words of the book of the law, that he tore his clothes.

¹¹Da kongen hørte lovbokens ord, sønderrev han sine klær.

¹²The king commanded Hilkiah the priest, and Ahikam the son of Shaphan, and Achbor the son of Micaiah, and Shaphan the scribe, and Asaiah the king’s servant, saying,

¹²Og kongen bød presten Hilkias og Akikam, Safans sønn, og Akbor, Mikajas sønn, og statsskriveren Safan og kongens tjener Asaja:

¹³“Go inquire of Yahweh for me, and for the people, and for all Judah, concerning the words of this book that is found; for great is the wrath of Yahweh that is kindled against us, because our fathers have not listened to the words of this book, to do according to all that which is written concerning us.”

¹³Gå og spør Herren for mig og for folket og for hele Juda om det som står i denne bok som nu er funnet! For stor er Herrens vrede, som er optendt mot oss fordi våre fedre ikke har vært lydige mot denne boks ord og ikke gjort alt det som er oss foreskrevet.

¹⁴So Hilkiah the priest, and Ahikam, and Achbor, and Shaphan, and Asaiah, went to Huldah the prophetess, the wife of Shallum the son of Tikvah, the son of Harhas, keeper of the wardrobe (now she lived in Jerusalem in the second quarter); and they talked with her.

¹⁴Så gikk presten Hilkias og Akikam og Akbor og Safan og Asaja til profetinnen Hulda, hustru til klædeskammervokteren Sallum, sønn av Tikva, Karkas' sønn; hun bodde Jerusalem i den annen bydel; og de talte med henne.

¹⁵She said to them, “Thus says Yahweh, the God of Israel: ‘Tell the man who sent you to me,

¹⁵Hun sa til dem: Så sier Herren, Israels Gud: Si til den mann som har sendt eder til mig:

¹⁶“Thus says Yahweh, ‘Behold, I will bring evil on this place, and on its inhabitants, even all the words of the book which the king of Judah has read.

¹⁶Så sier Herren: Se, jeg fører ulykke over dette sted og dets innbyggere - alt det som står i den bok som Judas konge har lest,

¹⁷Because they have forsaken me, and have burned incense to other gods, that they might provoke me to anger with all the work of their hands, therefore my wrath shall be kindled against this place, and it shall not be quenched.’”

¹⁷fordi de har forlatt mig og brent røkelse for andre guder for å vekke min harme med alt sine henders verk; min vrede er optendt mot dette sted, og den skal ikke utslukkes.

¹⁸But to the king of Judah, who sent you to inquire of Yahweh, thus you shall tell him, “Thus says Yahweh, the God of Israel: ‘Concerning the words which you have heard,

¹⁸Og til Judas konge, som sendte eder for å spørre Herren, til ham skal I si således: Så sier Herren, Israels Gud: Du har nu hørt disse ord;

¹⁹because your heart was tender, and you humbled yourself before Yahweh, when you heard what I spoke against this place, and against its inhabitants, that they should become a desolation and a curse, and have torn your clothes, and wept before me; I also have heard you,’ says Yahweh.

¹⁹men fordi ditt hjerte blev bløtt, og du ydmyket dig for Herrens åsyn da du hørte hvad jeg har talt mot dette sted og dets innbyggere - at de skal bli til ødeleggelse og forbannelse - og fordi du sønderrev dine klær og gråt for mitt åsyn, så har også jeg hørt, sier Herren.

²⁰‘Therefore behold, I will gather you to your fathers, and you shall be gathered to your grave in peace, neither shall your eyes see all the evil which I will bring on this place.’”’” They brought back this message to the king.

²⁰Derfor vil jeg samle dig til dine fedre, og du skal samles med dem i din grav i fred, og dine øine skal ikke se all den ulykke jeg vil føre over dette sted. Med dette svar kom de tilbake til kongen.
