¹When you go forth to battle against your enemies, and see horses, chariots, and a people more than you, you shall not be afraid of them; for Yahweh your God is with you, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt.

¹Når du drar ut i krig mot din fiende, og du ser hester og vogner og flere krigsfolk enn du har selv, da skal du ikke være redd dem; for Herren din Gud er med dig, han som førte dig op fra Egyptens land.

²It shall be, when you draw near to the battle, that the priest shall approach and speak to the people,

²Og når I er i ferd med å gå i striden, da skal presten trede frem og tale til folket.

³and shall tell them, “Hear, Israel, you draw near this day to battle against your enemies: don’t let your heart faint; don’t be afraid, nor tremble, neither be scared of them;

³Og han skal si til dem: Hør, Israel! I er idag i ferd med å gå i strid mot eders fiender. La ikke motet falle; frykt ikke, forferdes ikke og reddes ikke for dem!

⁴for Yahweh your God is he who goes with you, to fight for you against your enemies, to save you.”

⁴For Herren eders Gud går selv med eder for å stride for eder mot eders fiender og frelse eder.

⁵The officers shall speak to the people, saying, “What man is there who has built a new house, and has not dedicated it? Let him go and return to his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man dedicate it.

⁵Og tilsynsmennene skal tale til folket og si: Er her nogen mann som har bygget et nytt hus og ikke innvidd det, så kan han gå og vende tilbake til sitt hus, forat han ikke skal dø i striden og en annen innvie det.

⁶What man is there who has planted a vineyard, and has not used its fruit? Let him go and return to his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man use its fruit.

⁶Og er her nogen mann som har plantet en vingård og ennu ikke har tatt den i bruk, så kan han gå og vende tilbake til sitt hus, forat han ikke skal dø i striden og en annen ta den i bruk.

⁷What man is there who has pledged to be married a wife, and has not taken her? Let him go and return to his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man take her.”

⁷Og er her nogen mann som har trolovet sig med en kvinne, men ennu ikke har tatt henne til ekte, så kan han gå og vende tilbake til sitt hus, forat han ikke skal dø i striden og en annen ekte henne.

⁸The officers shall speak further to the people, and they shall say, “What man is there who is fearful and fainthearted? Let him go and return to his house, lest his brother’s heart melt as his heart.”

⁸Og tilsynsmennene skal fremdeles tale til folket og si: Er her nogen mann som er redd og motfallen, så kan han gå og vende tilbake til sitt hus, forat ikke hans brødres hjerte skal bli mistrøstig, likesom hans eget hjerte er.

⁹It shall be, when the officers have made an end of speaking to the people, that they shall appoint captains of armies at the head of the people.

⁹Og når så tilsynsmennene har endt sin tale til folket, da skal de sette hærførere over folket.

¹⁰When you draw near to a city to fight against it, then proclaim peace to it.

¹⁰Når du går frem mot en by for å stride mot den, så skal du først tilbyde den fred.

¹¹It shall be, if it makes you answer of peace, and opens to you, then it shall be, that all the people who are found therein shall become tributary to you, and shall serve you.

¹¹Og dersom den svarer dig fredelig og lukker op for dig, da skal alt folket i byen være dig arbeidspliktig og tjene dig.

¹²If it will make no peace with you, but will make war against you, then you shall besiege it:

¹²Men dersom den ikke vil ha fred med dig, men føre krig mot dig, da skal du kringsette den,

¹³and when Yahweh your God delivers it into your hand, you shall strike every male of it with the edge of the sword:

¹³og Herren din Gud skal gi den i din hånd; og du skal slå alt mannkjønn der ihjel med sverdets egg;

¹⁴but the women, and the little ones, and the livestock, and all that is in the city, even all its spoil, you shall take for a prey to yourself; and you shall eat the spoil of your enemies, which Yahweh your God has given you.

¹⁴men kvinnene og barna og feet og alt det som er i byen - alt hærfanget der - kan du ta som ditt bytte, og du kan nytte alt det som Herren din Gud har latt dig ta fra dine fiender.

¹⁵Thus you shall do to all the cities which are very far off from you, which are not of the cities of these nations.

¹⁵Således skal du gjøre med alle de byer som ligger meget langt borte fra dig og ikke hører disse folk til.

¹⁶But of the cities of these peoples, that Yahweh your God gives you for an inheritance, you shall save alive nothing that breathes;

¹⁶Men i de byer som hører disse folk til, og som Herren din Gud gir dig til arv, der skal du ikke la noget som drar ånde, bli i live;

¹⁷but you shall utterly destroy them: the Hittite, and the Amorite, the Canaanite, and the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite; as Yahweh your God has commanded you;

¹⁷men du skal slå dem med bann, både hetittene og amorittene og kana'anittene og ferisittene, hevittene og jebusittene, således som Herren din Gud har befalt dig,

¹⁸that they not teach you to do after all their abominations, which they have done to their gods; so would you sin against Yahweh your God.

¹⁹When you shall besiege a city a long time, in making war against it to take it, you shall not destroy its trees by wielding an axe against them; for you may eat of them, and you shall not cut them down; for is the tree of the field man, that it should be besieged of you?

¹⁹Når du holder en by kringsatt i lang tid og strider mot den for å innta den, så skal du ikke ødelegge dens trær ved å skadehugge dem med øksen; du kan ete av dem, men du skal ikke hugge dem ned; trærne på marken er da ikke mennesker, så du skulde stride mot dem og?

²⁰Only the trees of which you know that they are not trees for food, you shall destroy and cut them down; and you shall build bulwarks against the city that makes war with you, until it fall.

²⁰Men de trær som du vet ikke bærer spiselig frukt, dem kan du ødelegge og hugge ned og bruke til å bygge bolverk mot den by som fører krig mot dig, inntil den faller.
