¹It happened in the sixth year, in the sixth month, in the fifth day of the month, as I sat in my house, and the elders of Judah sat before me, that the hand of the Lord Yahweh fell there on me.

²Then I saw, and behold, a likeness as the appearance of fire; from the appearance of his waist and downward, fire; and from his waist and upward, as the appearance of brightness, as it were glowing metal.

²Og jeg så, og se, det var noget som var som ild å se til; fra det som var å se av hans lender og nedover, var alt som ild, og fra hans lender og opover var det som en glans å se til, som skinnet av det blanke metall.

³He put forth the form of a hand, and took me by a lock of my head; and the Spirit lifted me up between earth and the sky, and brought me in the visions of God to Jerusalem, to the door of the gate of the inner court that looks toward the north; where there was the seat of the image of jealousy, which provokes to jealousy.

³Og han rakte ut noget som lignet en hånd, og tok mig ved håret på mitt hode, og et vær løftet mig op mellem jorden og himmelen og førte mig i syner fra Gud til Jerusalem, til inngangen av den indre forgårds port, som vender mot nord, der hvor nidkjærhets-billedet stod, det som vakte Guds nidkjærhet.

⁴Behold, the glory of the God of Israel was there, according to the appearance that I saw in the plain.

⁴Og der så jeg Israels Guds herlighet, likesom i det syn jeg hadde sett i dalen.

⁵Then he said to me, Son of man, lift up your eyes now the way toward the north. So I lifted up my eyes the way toward the north, and see, northward of the gate of the altar this image of jealousy in the entry.

⁵Og han sa til mig: Menneskesønn, løft dine øine mot nord! Og jeg løftet mine øine mot nord og fikk se nidkjærhets-billedet nordenfor alterporten ved inngangen.

⁶He said to me, Son of man, do you see what they do? even the great abominations that the house of Israel do commit here, that I should go far off from my sanctuary? But you shall again see yet other great abominations.

⁶Og han sa til mig: Menneskesønn! Ser du hvad disse gjør? Store vederstyggeligheter er det Israels hus her gjør, så jeg må dra langt bort fra min helligdom; men du skal ennu få se flere store vederstyggeligheter.

⁷He brought me to the door of the court; and when I looked, behold, a hole in the wall.

⁷Og han førte mig til inngangen av forgården, og jeg så, og se, der var et hull i veggen.

⁸Then he said to me, Son of man, dig now in the wall: and when I had dug in the wall, behold, a door.

⁸Og han sa til mig: Menneskesønn, bryt igjennom veggen! Og jeg brøt igjennem veggen og fikk se en dør.

⁹He said to me, Go in, and see the wicked abominations that they do here.

⁹Og han sa til mig: Gå inn og se de fæle vederstyggeligheter som de gjør der!

¹⁰So I went in and saw; and see, every form of creeping things, and abominable animals, and all the idols of the house of Israel, portrayed around on the wall.

¹⁰Og jeg gikk inn og så, og se, der var alle slags billeder av vederstyggelige kryp og firføtte dyr og alle Israels folks motbydelige avguder, inngravd på veggene rundt omkring.

¹¹There stood before them seventy men of the elders of the house of Israel; and in their midst stood Jaazaniah the son of Shaphan, every man with his censer in his hand; and the odor of the cloud of incense went up.

¹¹Og foran dem stod sytti menn av de eldste i Israels folk, og Ja'asanja, Safans sønn, stod midt iblandt dem, og hver av dem hadde et røkelsekar i hånden, og det steg op duft av røkelseskyen.

¹²Then he said to me, Son of man, have you seen what the elders of the house of Israel do in the dark, every man in his rooms of imagery? for they say, Yahweh doesn’t see us; Yahweh has forsaken the land.

¹²Og han sa til mig: Har du sett, menneskesønn, hvad de eldste i Israels folk gjør i mørket, hver i sine billedkammer? For de sier: Herren ser oss ikke, Herren har forlatt landet.

¹³He said also to me, You shall again see yet other great abominations which they do.

¹³Og han sa til mig: Ennu skal du få se flere store vederstyggeligheter som de gjør.

¹⁴Then he brought me to the door of the gate of Yahweh’s house which was toward the north; and see, there sat the women weeping for Tammuz.

¹⁴Og han førte mig til inngangen av porten til Herrens hus, den port som vender mot nord, og se, der satt kvinnene og gråt over Tammus*. / {* en babylonisk avgud som svarer til grekernes Adonis.}

¹⁵Then he said to me, Have you seen this, son of man? You shall again see yet greater abominations than these.

¹⁵Og han sa til mig: Har du sett det, menneskesønn? Ennu skal du få se flere vederstyggeligheter, større enn disse.

¹⁶He brought me into the inner court of Yahweh’s house; and see, at the door of Yahweh’s temple, between the porch and the altar, were about twenty-five men, with their backs toward Yahweh’s temple, and their faces toward the east; and they were worshipping the sun toward the east.

¹⁶Og han førte mig inn i den indre forgård til Herrens hus, og se, ved inngangen til Herrens tempel, mellem forhallen og alteret, var det omkring fem og tyve menn som vendte ryggen mot Herrens tempel og ansiktet mot øst, og de bøide sig mot øst for solen.

¹⁷Then he said to me, Have you seen this, son of man? Is it a light thing to the house of Judah that they commit the abominations which they commit here? for they have filled the land with violence, and have turned again to provoke me to anger: and behold, they put the branch to their nose.

¹⁷Og han sa til mig: Har du sett det, menneskesønn? Var det ikke nok for Judas hus å gjøre de vederstyggeligheter de her har gjort, siden de også har opfylt landet med vold og atter vakt min harme? Se hvorledes de nu holder kvisten op til sin nese*. / {* så gjorde perserne når de bad til solen.}

¹⁸Therefore will I also deal in wrath; my eye shall not spare, neither will I have pity; and though they cry in my ears with a loud voice, yet will I not hear them.

¹⁸Derfor vil da også jeg la min harme råde; jeg vil ikke vise skånsel og ikke spare dem; og om de roper for mine ører med høi røst, vil jeg ikke høre dem.
