¹It happened after many days, that the word of Yahweh came to Elijah, in the third year, saying, “Go, show yourself to Ahab; and I will send rain on the earth.”

¹ پس از مدّتی، در سال سوم خشکسالی، خداوند به ایلیا فرمود: «نزد پادشاه برو و خود را معرّفی کن و من بر زمین باران خواهم فرستاد.»

²Elijah went to show himself to Ahab. The famine was severe in Samaria.

² پس ایلیا به نزد اخاب رفت تا با او ملاقات کند. در آن هنگام قحطی بسیار سختی در سامره بود.

³Ahab called Obadiah, who was over the household. (Now Obadiah feared Yahweh greatly:

³ اخاب عوبدیا را که مسئول کاخ پادشاه بود، به نزد خویش خواند. (عوبدیا ایمان راسخی به خداوند داشت

⁴for it was so, when Jezebel cut off the prophets of Yahweh, that Obadiah took one hundred prophets, and hid them by fifty in a cave, and fed them with bread and water.)

⁴ و هنگامی‌که ایزابل می‌خواست انبیای خداوند را بکشد، او یکصد نفر از آنها را در دو غار در گروههای پنجاه نفری پنهان کرد و برای ایشان نان و آب تهیّه می‌کرد.)

⁵Ahab said to Obadiah, “Go through the land, to all the springs of water, and to all the brooks. Perhaps we may find grass and save the horses and mules alive, that we not lose all the animals.”

⁵ اخاب به عوبدیا گفت: «بیایید تا به تمام چشمه‌ها و وادیهای سرزمین برویم. شاید بتوانیم مقداری علف پیدا کنیم تا اسبها و قاطرها را زنده نگه داریم، شاید مجبور نباشیم، هیچ‌کدام از حیوانات را بکشیم.»

⁶So they divided the land between them to pass throughout it: Ahab went one way by himself, and Obadiah went another way by himself.

⁶ پس آنها سرزمینی را که می‌بایست بررسی کنند بین خود تقسیم کردند و هر کدام به تنهایی در جهتی رفتند.

⁷As Obadiah was in the way, behold, Elijah met him: and he recognized him, and fell on his face, and said, “Is it you, my lord Elijah?”

⁷ عوبدیا در بین راه ناگهان ایلیا را دید. او را شناخت و سر به خاک نهاد و گفت: «سرور من ایلیا، شما هستید؟»

⁸He answered him, “It is I. Go, tell your lord, ‘Behold, Elijah is here!’”

⁸ او پاسخ داد: «بلی من ایلیا هستم. برو به سرورت پادشاه بگو که من اینجا هستم.»

⁹He said, “Wherein have I sinned, that you would deliver your servant into the hand of Ahab, to kill me?

⁹ عوبدیا گفت: «مگر من چه گناهی کرده‌ام که می‌خواهی مرا به دست اخاب بدهی تا مرا بکشد؟

¹⁰As Yahweh your God lives, there is no nation or kingdom, where my lord has not sent to seek you. When they said, ‘He is not here,’ he took an oath of the kingdom and nation, that they didn’t find you.

¹⁰ به خداوند زنده، خدای تو سوگند یاد می‌کنم که پادشاه در همهٔ سرزمینهای جهان در جستجوی تو بوده است. هرگاه فرمانروای سرزمینی خبر می‌داد که تو در سرزمین آنها نیستی، اخاب آن فرمانروا را مجبور می‌کرد سوگند یاد کند که نمی‌توانند تو را پیدا کنند.

¹¹Now you say, ‘Go, tell your lord, “Behold, Elijah is here.”’

¹¹ اکنون تو می‌خواهی من بروم و به او بگویم تو اینجا هستی؟

¹²It will happen, as soon as I am gone from you, that the Spirit of Yahweh will carry you I don’t know where; and so when I come and tell Ahab, and he can’t find you, he will kill me. But I, your servant, have feared Yahweh from my youth.

¹² همین که از نزد تو بروم، روح خداوند تو را به جای ناشناخته‌ای خواهد برد و اگر من بروم و به اخاب بگویم كه تو اینجا هستی و او تو را نیابد، او مرا خواهد کشت. هرچند که من از کودکی خداوند را با وفاداری پرستش می‌کنم.

¹³Wasn’t it told my lord what I did when Jezebel killed the prophets of Yahweh, how I hid one hundred men of Yahweh’s prophets with fifty to a cave, and fed them with bread and water?

¹³ آیا کسی به سرورم نگفته، هنگامی‌که ایزابل انبیای خداوند را می‌کشت من چگونه صد نفر از آنها را در دو گروه پنجاه نفری در دو غار پنهان کردم و به ایشان نان و آب دادم؟

¹⁴Now you say, ‘Go, tell your lord, “Behold, Elijah is here”;’ and he will kill me.”

¹⁴ حالا به من می‌گویی: 'برو و به سرورت بگو که ایلیا اینجاست.' او مرا خواهد کشت.»

¹⁵Elijah said, “As Yahweh of Armies lives, before whom I stand, I will surely show myself to him today.”

¹⁵ ایلیا پاسخ داد: «به خداوند زنده، خدای متعالی که خدمتگزارش هستم، امروز خود را به اخاب نشان خواهم داد.»

¹⁶So Obadiah went to meet Ahab, and told him; and Ahab went to meet Elijah.

¹⁶ پس عوبدیا نزد اخاب رفت و به او گفت و اخاب به دیدن ایلیا رفت.

¹⁷It happened, when Ahab saw Elijah, that Ahab said to him, “Is that you, you troubler of Israel?”

¹⁷ هنگامی‌ که اخاب ایلیا را دید، به او گفت: «این تو هستی، خرابکار اسرائیل؟»

¹⁸He answered, “I have not troubled Israel; but you, and your father’s house, in that you have forsaken the commandments of Yahweh, and you have followed the Baals.

¹⁸ ایلیا پاسخ داد: «من خرابکار نیستم. تو و خاندان پدرت خرابکار هستید. شما از فرمان خداوند سرپیچی کرده‌اید و بت بعل را پرستش می‌کنید.

¹⁹Now therefore send, and gather to me all Israel to Mount Carmel, and four hundred fifty of the prophets of Baal, and four hundred of the prophets of the Asherah, who eat at Jezebel’s table.”

¹⁹ اکنون همهٔ مردم اسرائیل را گردهم آور و نزد من در کوه کرمل بفرست و همچنین چهارصد و پنجاه نبی بت بعل و چهارصد نبی الههٔ اشره را که بر سر سفرهٔ ایزابل می‌خورند نیز بفرست.»

²⁰So Ahab sent to all the children of Israel, and gathered the prophets together to Mount Carmel.

²⁰ پس اخاب به تمام مردم اسرائیل پیام فرستاد تا همراه انبیا در کوه کرمل گردهم آیند.

²¹Elijah came near to all the people, and said, “How long will you waver between the two sides? If Yahweh is God, follow him; but if Baal, then follow him.” The people answered him not a word.

²¹ ایلیا نزد مردم رفت و گفت: «تا به کی دو دل خواهید ماند؟ اگر خداوند خداست از او پیروی کنید و اگر بت بعل، پس از او پیروی کنید.» مردم حتّی یک کلمه پاسخ ندادند.

²²Then Elijah said to the people, “I, even I only, am left a prophet of Yahweh; but Baal’s prophets are four hundred fifty men.

²² آنگاه ایلیا به ایشان گفت: «من تنها نبی خدا هستم که باقی مانده، ولی انبیای بت بعل چهارصد و پنجاه نفر هستند.

²³Let them therefore give us two bulls; and let them choose one bull for themselves, and cut it in pieces, and lay it on the wood, and put no fire under; and I will dress the other bull, and lay it on the wood, and put no fire under it.

²³ دو گاو نر بیاورید، یک گاو را انبیای بعل برگزینند، آن را بکشند، تکه‌تکه کنند و روی هیزم بگذارند، ولی آتش روشن نکنند. من نیز با گاو دیگر چنین خواهم کرد.

²⁴You call on the name of your god, and I will call on the name of Yahweh. The God who answers by fire, let him be God.” All the people answered, “It is well said.”

²⁴ آنگاه شما نام خدای خود را بخوانید و من نام خداوند را و خدایی که با آتش پاسخ دهد خدای حقیقی است.» همهٔ مردم پاسخ دادند: «بسیار خوب!»

²⁵Elijah said to the prophets of Baal, “Choose one bull for yourselves, and dress it first; for you are many; and call on the name of your god, but put no fire under it.”

²⁵ پس ایلیا به انبیای بت بعل گفت: «چون تعداد شما بیشتر است گاو نری را برگزینید و آن را نخست آماده کنید و نام خدای خود را بخوانید ولی هیزم را آتش نزنید.»

²⁶They took the bull which was given them, and they dressed it, and called on the name of Baal from morning even until noon, saying, Baal, hear us. But there was no voice, nor any who answered. They leaped about the altar which was made.

²⁶ ایشان گاو نری را که آورده بودند، آماده کردند و نام بعل را از صبح تا ظهر خواندند و می‌گفتند: «ای بعل، به ما پاسخ ده» و به پایکوبی در اطراف قربانگاهی که ساخته بودند، ادامه دادند. امّا پاسخی نیامد.

²⁷It happened at noon, that Elijah mocked them, and said, “Cry aloud; for he is a god. Either he is musing, or he has gone aside, or he is on a journey, or perhaps he sleeps and must be awakened.”

²⁷ هنگام ظهر ایلیا به ایشان می‌خندید و می‌گفت: «بلندتر او را صدا کنید، او خداست؛ شاید در اندیشهٔ عمیق فرو رفته یا مشغول باشد، یا شاید به سفر رفته، شاید خوابیده باشد و باید او را بیدار کنید.»

²⁸They cried aloud, and cut themselves in their way with knives and lances, until the blood gushed out on them.

²⁸ پس انبیای بعل بلندتر دعا کردند و طبق مراسم خود خویشتن را با چاقو و خنجر بریدند تا خون جاری شود.

²⁹It was so, when midday was past, that they prophesied until the time of the offering of the offering; but there was neither voice, nor any to answer, nor any who regarded.

²⁹ آنها به هیاهوی خود تا نیمروز ادامه دادند، ولی پاسخی نیامد و هیچ صدایی شنیده نشد.

³⁰Elijah said to all the people, “Come near to me”; and all the people came near to him. He repaired the altar of Yahweh that was thrown down.

³⁰ آنگاه ایلیا به مردم گفت: «نزدیک بیایید.» و همهٔ مردم به او نزدیک شدند. او قربانگاه خداوند را که ویران شده بود، بازسازی کرد.

³¹Elijah took twelve stones, according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Jacob, to whom the word of Yahweh came, saying, “Israel shall be your name.”

³¹ ایلیا دوازده سنگ برداشت، هر سنگ به نشانه یک طایفهٔ پسران یعقوب، کسی‌که خداوند به او گفت: «نام تو پس از این اسرائیل خواهد بود.»

³²With the stones he built an altar in the name of Yahweh. He made a trench around the altar, large enough to contain two measures of seed.

³² با این دوازده سنگ او قربانگاهی به نام خداوند ساخت و دور آن جویی که گنجایشی معادل شانزده لیتر داشت، کَند.

³³He put the wood in order, and cut the bull in pieces, and laid it on the wood. He said, “Fill four jars with water, and pour it on the burnt offering, and on the wood.”

³³ سپس هیزم را روی قربانگاه گذاشت و گاو نر را تکه‌تکه کرد و روی هیزمها گذاشت و گفت: «چهار کوزه از آب پر کنید و روی قربانی و هیزمها بریزید.»

³⁴He said, “Do it a second time”; and they did it the second time. He said, “Do it a third time”; and they did it the third time.

³⁴ او گفت: «دوباره چنین کنید» و آنها برای بار دوم چنین کردند و گفت: «برای سومین بار» و چنین کردند.

³⁵The water ran around the altar; and he also filled the trench with water.

³⁵ آب از روی قربانگاه جاری شد و جوی را پر کرد.

³⁶It happened at the time of the offering of the offering, that Elijah the prophet came near, and said, “Yahweh, the God of Abraham, of Isaac, and of Israel, let it be known this day that you are God in Israel, and that I am your servant, and that I have done all these things at your word.

³⁶ در هنگام انجام قربانی عصر ایلیای نبی به سمت قربانگاه رفت و چنین دعا کرد: «خداوندا، خدای ابراهیم، اسحاق و اسرائیل، بگذار امروز آشکار گردد که تو خدای اسرائیل هستی و من خدمتگزار تو هستم و من همهٔ این کارها را به فرمان تو بجا آورده‌ام.

³⁷Hear me, Yahweh, hear me, that this people may know that you, Yahweh, are God, and that you have turned their heart back again.”

³⁷ مرا پاسخ بده‌ ای خداوند، مرا پاسخ بده تا این مردم بدانند که تو ای خداوند، خدا هستی و آنها را به سوی خود بازمی‌گردانی.»

³⁸Then the fire of Yahweh fell, and consumed the burnt offering, and the wood, and the stones, and the dust, and licked up the water that was in the trench.

³⁸ آنگاه آتش خداوند فرود آمد و قربانی، هیزم، سنگ و خاک را سوزاند و آب جوی را خشک کرد.

³⁹When all the people saw it, they fell on their faces. They said, “Yahweh, he is God! Yahweh, he is God!”

³⁹ هنگامی‌که مردم این را دیدند، خود را به روی زمین افکندند و فریاد برآوردند: «خداوند، خداست! خداوند، خداست!»

⁴⁰Elijah said to them, “Seize the prophets of Baal! Don’t let one of them escape!” They seized them. Elijah brought them down to the brook Kishon, and killed them there.

⁴⁰ ایلیا دستور داد: «انبیای بت بعل را دستگیر کنید؛ نگذارید هیچ‌کس بگریزد.» مردم همه را دستگیر کردند، و ایلیا آنها را به کنار وادی قیشون برد و در آنجا ایشان را کشت.

⁴¹Elijah said to Ahab, “Get up, eat and drink; for there is the sound of abundance of rain.”

⁴¹ ایلیا به اخاب گفت: «برو، بخور و بنوش، من صدای غرّش باران را که نزدیک می‌شود می‌شنوم.»

⁴²So Ahab went up to eat and to drink. Elijah went up to the top of Carmel; and he bowed himself down on the earth, and put his face between his knees.

⁴² درحالی‌که اخاب رفت تا بخورد، ایلیا بالای قلّهٔ کوه کرمل رفت. در آنجا به روی زمین خم شد و سرش را بین زانوهایش قرار داد.

⁴³He said to his servant, “Go up now, look toward the sea.” He went up, and looked, and said, “There is nothing.” He said, “Go again” seven times.

⁴³ او به خدمتکار خود گفت: «برو و به سوی دریا نگاه کن.» خدمتکار رفت و بازگشت و گفت: «من چیزی ندیدم.» ایلیا گفت: «هفت مرتبهٔ دیگر برو.»

⁴⁴It happened at the seventh time, that he said, “Behold, a small cloud, like a man’s hand, is rising out of the sea.” He said, “Go up, tell Ahab, ‘Get ready and go down, so that the rain doesn’t stop you.’”

⁴⁴ در مرتبهٔ هفتم او گفت: «نگاه کن ابر کوچکی به اندازهٔ دست آدمی ‌از دریا برمی‌خیزد.» ایلیا به او گفت: «برو به اخاب بگو سوار ارّابه‌اش شود و پیش از اینکه باران او را از رفتن بازدارد به خانهٔ خود بازگرد.»

⁴⁵It happened in a little while, that the sky grew black with clouds and wind, and there was a great rain. Ahab rode, and went to Jezreel.

⁴⁵ در اندک زمانی ابر سیاه آسمان را پوشاند. باد شروع به وزیدن کرد و باران سنگینی بارید. اخاب سوار بر ارابهٔ خود شد و به یزرعیل بازگشت. دست خداوند بر ایلیا بود، کمر خود را بست و در پیشاپیش اخاب دوید و قبل از او به دروازهٔ یزرعیل وارد شد.

⁴⁶The hand of Yahweh was on Elijah; and he tucked his cloak into his belt and ran before Ahab to the entrance of Jezreel.

⁴⁶ دست خداوند بر ایلیا بود، کمر خود را بست و در پیشاپیش اخاب دوید و قبل از او به دروازهٔ یزرعیل وارد شد.
