¹Ben Hadad the king of Syria gathered all his army together; and there were thirty-two kings with him, and horses and chariots: and he went up and besieged Samaria, and fought against it.

¹ بنهدد، پادشاه سوریه تمام ارتش خود را گرد هم آورد، سی و دو پادشاه و اسبها و ارّابه‌ها همراه او بودند. او سامره را محاصره و به آن حمله کرد.

²He sent messengers to Ahab king of Israel, into the city, and said to him, “Thus says Ben Hadad,

² او قاصدان را به شهر، نزد اخاب پادشاه اسرائیل فرستاده، چنین پیام داد:

³‘Your silver and your gold is mine. Your wives also and your children, even the best, are mine.’”

³ «نقره و طلای تو و بهترین زنان و فرزندان تو از آن من هستند.»

⁴The king of Israel answered, “It is according to your saying, my lord, O king. I am yours, and all that I have.”

⁴ پادشاه اسرائیل پاسخ داد: «هرچه شما بگویید، ای سرور من، ای پادشاه من و آنچه دارم از آن شماست.»

⁵The messengers came again, and said, “Ben Hadad says, ‘I sent indeed to you, saying, “You shall deliver me your silver, and your gold, and your wives, and your children;

⁵ قاصد دوباره آمد و گفت: «بنهدد چنین می‌گوید، نقره و طلا و همسران و فرزندان خود را تحویل بده.

⁶but I will send my servants to you tomorrow about this time, and they shall search your house, and the houses of your servants; and it shall be, that whatever is pleasant in your eyes, they shall put it in their hand, and take it away.”’”

⁶ من فردا در همین موقع درباریان خود را می‌فرستم، آنها خانهٔ تو و تمام خدمتگزاران تو را جستجو خواهند كرد و هرچه را كه دلشان بخواهد برخواهند داشت.»

⁷Then the king of Israel called all the elders of the land, and said, “Please notice how this man seeks mischief; for he sent to me for my wives, and for my children, and for my silver, and for my gold; and I didn’t deny him.”

⁷ اخاب پادشاه، رهبران سرزمین را فراخواند و گفت: «ببینید، این مرد می‌خواهد ما را نابود کند. او خواستار نقره و طلا و زنها و بچّه‌های من بود و من موافقت کردم.»

⁸All the elders and all the people said to him, “Don’t listen, neither consent.”

⁸ رهبران و مردم پاسخ دادند: «به او توجّه نکن و تسلیم نشو.»

⁹Therefore he said to the messengers of Ben Hadad, “Tell my lord the king, ‘All that you sent for to your servant at the first I will do; but this thing I cannot do.’” The messengers departed, and brought him back the message.

⁹ پس اخاب به پیام آوران بنهدد گفت: «به سرورم، پادشاه بگویید: من درخواست اول تو را می‌پذیرم امّا نمی‌توانم با پیشنهاد دوم موافقت کنم.» قاصدان رفتند و با پیام دیگری بازگشتند که:

¹⁰Ben Hadad sent to him, and said, “The gods do so to me, and more also, if the dust of Samaria shall suffice for handfuls for all the people who follow me.”

¹⁰ بنهدد چنین می‌گوید: «من نیروی کافی می‌آورم تا شهر شما را نابود کنند و خاک آن را در دست خود حمل کنند. خدایان مرا بکشند، اگر چنین نکنم.»

¹¹The king of Israel answered, “Tell him, ‘Don’t let him who puts on his armor brag like he who takes it off.’”

¹¹ اخاب پادشاه پاسخ داد: «به بنهدد پادشاه بگویید که سرباز واقعی بعد از نبرد افتخار می‌کند نه قبل از آن.»

¹²It happened, when Ben Hadad heard this message, as he was drinking, he and the kings, in the pavilions, that he said to his servants, “Prepare to attack!” They prepared to attack the city.

¹² هنگامی‌ که بنهدد این پیام را شنید در چادر با پادشاهان دیگر مشغول میگساری بود. او به مردان خود گفت: «در جای خود مستقر شوید و آمادهٔ حمله به شهر باشید» و آنها در مواضع خود مستقر شدند.

¹³Behold, a prophet came near to Ahab king of Israel, and said, “Thus says Yahweh, ‘Have you seen all this great multitude? Behold, I will deliver it into your hand this day; and you shall know that I am Yahweh.’”

¹³ در این هنگام نبی‌ای نزد اخاب پادشاه آمد و گفت: «خداوند می‌گوید: 'این ارتش بزرگ را می‌بینی! من امروز تو را بر آنان پیروز خواهم کرد و تو خواهی دانست که من خداوند هستم.'»

¹⁴Ahab said, “By whom?” He said, “Thus says Yahweh, ‘By the young men of the princes of the provinces.’” Then he said, “Who shall begin the battle?” He answered, “You.”

¹⁴ اخاب پرسید: «چه کسی این کار را خواهد کرد؟» نبی پاسخ داد: «خداوند می‌گوید به وسیلهٔ سربازان جوانی كه تحت نظر فرمانداران اسرائیل هستند.» سپس او پرسید: «چه كسی حمله را آغاز خواهد كرد؟» او پاسخ داد: «خود تو!»

¹⁵Then he mustered the young men of the princes of the provinces, and they were two hundred and thirty-two. After them, he mustered all the people, even all the children of Israel, being seven thousand.

¹⁵ پس اخاب سربازان جوان فرمانداران استانها را فراخواند. آنها دویست و سی و دو نفر بودند. سپس او ارتش اسرائیل را که هفت‌ هزار نفر بودند، فراخواند.

¹⁶They went out at noon. But Ben Hadad was drinking himself drunk in the pavilions, he and the kings, the thirty-two kings who helped him.

¹⁶ هنگام ظهر از شهر خارج شدند. در این زمان بنهدد و سی و دو پادشاهِ متّحد او در چادرهای خود میگساری می‌کردند.

¹⁷The young men of the princes of the provinces went out first; and Ben Hadad sent out, and they told him, saying, “Men are coming out from Samaria.”

¹⁷ نخست سربازان فرمانداران استانها بیرون رفتند. دیده‌بانان بنهدد خبر دادند که گروهی سرباز از سامره بیرون می‌آیند.

¹⁸He said, “If they have come out for peace, take them alive; or if they have come out for war, take them alive.”

¹⁸ بنهدد گفت: «چه برای جنگ و چه برای صلح می‌آیند آنها را زنده دستگیر کنید.»

¹⁹So these went out of the city, the young men of the princes of the provinces, and the army which followed them.

¹⁹ پس سربازانِ فرماندارانِ استانها ابتدا از شهر خارج شدند و ارتش اسرائیل به دنبال آنها.

²⁰They each killed his man. The Syrians fled, and Israel pursued them. Ben Hadad the king of Syria escaped on a horse with horsemen.

²⁰ هریک از ایشان حریف خود را کشت، سربازان سوری گریختند و اسرائیلی‌ها ایشان را دنبال کردند ولی بنهدد سوار بر اسب همراه گروهی از سواره نظام گریخت.

²¹The king of Israel went out, and struck the horses and chariots, and killed the Syrians with a great slaughter.

²¹ پادشاه اسرائیل بیرون رفت و اسبها و ارّابه‌ها را گرفت و سوری‌ها را در کشتاری بزرگ شکست داد.

²²The prophet came near to the king of Israel, and said to him, “Go, strengthen yourself, and mark, and see what you do; for at the return of the year the king of Syria will come up against you.”

²² آنگاه نبی نزد اخاب پادشاه رفت و گفت: «بازگرد و نیروهای خود را بازسازی کن و آنچه را لازم است انجام بده، زیرا در بهار پادشاه سوریه دوباره به تو حمله خواهد کرد.»

²³The servants of the king of Syria said to him, “Their god is a god of the hills; therefore they were stronger than we. But let us fight against them in the plain, and surely we shall be stronger than they.

²³ درباریان پادشاه سوریه به او گفتند: «خدایان اسرائیل، خدایان تپّه‌ها هستند، به همین دلیل آنها از ما نیرومندتر بودند. اجازه بدهید تا ما در دشت با آنها بجنگیم، یقیناً ما نیرومندتر خواهیم بود.

²⁴Do this thing: take the kings away, every man out of his place, and put captains in their place.

²⁴ اکنون آن سی و دو پادشاه را بر کنار کن و به جای آنان فرماندهان نظامی ‌بگمار

²⁵Muster an army, like the army that you have lost, horse for horse, and chariot for chariot. We will fight against them in the plain, and surely we will be stronger than them.” He listened to their voice, and did so.

²⁵ و ارتشی مانند سپاهی که از دست دادی آماده کن، اسب به جای اسب و ارّابه به جای ارّابه، آنگاه ما در دشت نبرد خواهیم کرد. یقیناً نیرومندتر از آنان خواهیم بود.» بنهدد پادشاه موافقت کرد و طبق پیشنهاد ایشان عمل نمود.

²⁶It happened at the return of the year, that Ben Hadad mustered the Syrians, and went up to Aphek, to fight against Israel.

²⁶ در بهار، بنهدد سربازان خود را فراخواند و به شهر افیق رفت تا به اسرائیل حمله کند.

²⁷The children of Israel were mustered, and were provisioned, and went against them. The children of Israel encamped before them like two little flocks of young goats; but the Syrians filled the country.

²⁷ مردم اسرائیل نیز آماده و مجهّز بودند و به مقابلهٔ ایشان رفتند و اسرائیلی‌ها مانند دو گلّهٔ کوچک بُز در برابر سوری‌ها بودند، درصورتی‌که سوری‌ها همه‌جا را پر کرده بودند.

²⁸A man of God came near and spoke to the king of Israel, and said, “Thus says Yahweh, ‘Because the Syrians have said, “Yahweh is a god of the hills, but he is not a god of the valleys”; therefore I will deliver all this great multitude into your hand, and you shall know that I am Yahweh.’”

²⁸ نبی‌ای نزد اخاب پادشاه رفت و گفت: «خداوند چنین می‌فرماید: چون سوری‌ها می‌گویند من خدای تپّه‌ها هستم و نه خدای دشتها، من شما را بر ارتش بزرگ آنها پیروز خواهم کرد و تو و مردمانت خواهید دانست که من، خداوند هستم.»

²⁹They encamped one over against the other seven days. So it was, that in the seventh day the battle was joined; and the children of Israel killed one hundred thousand footmen of the Syrians in one day.

²⁹ مدّت هفت روز سپاه سوریه و اسرائیل در مقابل یکدیگر اردو زدند. در روز هفتم نبرد آغاز شد و اسرائیلی‌ها صد هزار نفر از سوری‌ها را کشتند.

³⁰But the rest fled to Aphek, into the city; and the wall fell on twenty-seven thousand men who were left. Ben Hadad fled, and came into the city, into an inner room.

³⁰ ‌بازماندگان به شهر افیق گریختند و دیوار شهر به روی بیست و هفت هزار نفر از ایشان خراب شد. بنهدد نیز به شهر گریخت و در پستوی خانه‌ای پناه گرفت.

³¹His servants said to him, “See now, we have heard that the kings of the house of Israel are merciful kings. Please let us put sackcloth on our bodies, and ropes on our heads, and go out to the king of Israel. Maybe he will save your life.”

³¹ درباریان بنهدد به او گفتند: «ما شنیده‌ایم که پادشاهان اسرائیل بخشنده هستند. اجازه بدهید تا پلاس دور کمر خود ببندیم و طناب به گردن خود بیندازیم و به نزد پادشاه اسرائیل برویم، شاید تو را زنده بگذارد.»

³²So they put sackcloth on their bodies and ropes on their heads, and came to the king of Israel, and said, “Your servant Ben Hadad says, ‘Please let me live.’” He said, “Is he still alive? He is my brother.”

³² پس آنها پلاس به کمر خود بستند و طناب به گردن خود نهادند و نزد اخاب رفتند و گفتند: «خدمتگزار تو بنهدد می‌گوید: 'اجازه دهید من زنده بمانم.'» اخاب پرسید: «آیا او هنوز زنده است؟ او برادر من است.»

³³Now the men observed diligently, and hurried to take this phrase; and they said, “Your brother Ben Hadad.” Then he said, “Go, bring him.” Then Ben Hadad came out to him; and he caused him to come up into the chariot.

³³ درباریان بنهدد این را نشانه خوبی دانستند و بی‌درنگ حرف خودش را تکرار کردند و گفتند: «بله، برادر تو بنهدد.» اخاب فرمان داد: «او را نزد من بیاورید.» هنگامی‌که بنهدد رسید اخاب از او دعوت کرد که سوار ارابهٔ او شود.

³⁴Ben Hadad said to him, “The cities which my father took from your father I will restore. You shall make streets for yourself in Damascus, as my father made in Samaria.” “I,” said Ahab, “will let you go with this covenant.” So he made a covenant with him, and let him go.

³⁴ بنهدد گفت: «تمام شهرهایی را که پدرم از پدر تو گرفت به تو بازمی‌گردانم. تو می‌توانی در دمشق مرکز تجاری برپا کنی، همان‌طور که پدرم در سامره کرد.» اخاب پاسخ داد: «تحت این شرایط تو را آزاد می‌کنم.» پس از اینکه پیمان بستند، بنهدد را رها کرد.

³⁵A certain man of the sons of the prophets said to his fellow by the word of Yahweh, “Please strike me!” The man refused to strike him.

³⁵ به فرمان خداوند مردی از گروه انبیا به دوست خود گفت: «مرا بزن» امّا آن مرد چنین نکرد.

³⁶Then he said to him, “Because you have not obeyed the voice of Yahweh, behold, as soon as you are departed from me, a lion shall kill you.” As soon as he was departed from him, a lion found him, and killed him.

³⁶ پس به او گفت: «چون تو از فرمان خداوند سرپیچی کردی پس از اینکه مرا ترک کنی، شیری تو را خواهد کشت.» و چون او را ترک کرد شیری آمد و او را کشت.

³⁷Then he found another man, and said, “Please strike me.” The man struck him, smiting and wounding him.

³⁷ نبی مرد دیگری را یافت و به او گفت: «مرا بزن» پس آن مرد او را زد و زخمی ‌نمود.

³⁸So the prophet departed, and waited for the king by the way, and disguised himself with his headband over his eyes.

³⁸ نبی صورت خود را با پارچه‌ای پوشاند تا ناشناس باشد و در کنار جاده رفت و منتظر عبور پادشاه اسرائیل ایستاد.

³⁹As the king passed by, he cried to the king; and he said, “Your servant went out into the midst of the battle; and behold, a man turned aside, and brought a man to me, and said, ‘Guard this man! If by any means he be missing, then your life shall be for his life, or else you shall pay a talent of silver.’

³⁹ هنگامی‌که پادشاه از آنجا می‌گذشت او را صدا کرد و گفت: «بندهٔ تو در میدان جنگ بود که سربازی، اسیری را نزد من آورد و گفت: مواظب این مرد باش اگر فرار كند تو باید به جای او كشته شوی و یا سه هزار سکّهٔ نقره جریمه بدهی.

⁴⁰As your servant was busy here and there, he was gone.” The king of Israel said to him, “So your judgment shall be; you yourself have decided it.”

⁴⁰ امّا من به کارهای دیگر مشغول شدم و آن مرد گریخت.» پادشاه پاسخ داد: «تو مقصّر هستی و باید تاوان آن را بپردازی.»

⁴¹He hurried, and took the headband away from his eyes; and the king of Israel recognized that he was of the prophets.

⁴¹ آنگاه نبی پارچه از صورت خود کنار زد و پادشاه اسرائیل او را شناخت که یکی از انبیاست.

⁴²He said to him, “Thus says Yahweh, ‘Because you have let go out of your hand the man whom I had devoted to destruction, therefore your life shall go for his life, and your people for his people.’”

⁴² نبی به پادشاه چنین گفت: «خداوند چنین می‌فرماید: 'چون مردی را که من به مرگ محکوم کرده‌ام، گذاشتی تا از دست تو رها شود، در نتیجه جان تو به جای جان او و جان مردم تو به جای مردم او خواهد بود.'» پادشاه اندوهناک و پریشان به خانهٔ خود در سامره بازگشت.

⁴³The king of Israel went to his house sullen and angry, and came to Samaria.
