¹Then Nahash the Ammonite came up, and encamped against Jabesh Gilead: and all the men of Jabesh said to Nahash, “Make a covenant with us, and we will serve you.”

¹ در این وقت ناحاش عمونی با ارتش خود به منظور حمله به اسرائیل در مقابل یابیش جلعاد اردو زدند. مردم آنجا به ناحاش پیشنهاد صلح کرده گفتند: «با ما پیمان ببند و ما تحت فرمان تو خواهیم بود.»

²Nahash the Ammonite said to them, “On this condition I will make it with you, that all your right eyes be put out; and I will lay it for a reproach on all Israel.”

² ناحاش گفت: «بسیار خوب، به یک شرط با شما پیمان می‌بندم که من چشم راست هر کدام از شما را از کاسه بیرون آورم تا همهٔ اسرائیل سرافکنده شوند!»

³The elders of Jabesh said to him, “Give us seven day, that we may send messengers to all the borders of Israel; and then, if there is no one to save us, we will come out to you.”

³ رهبران یابیش به او گفتند: «به ما یک هفته مهلت بده تا قاصدانی را برای کمک به سراسر کشور اسرائیل بفرستیم. اگر کسی برای نجات ما نیامد، آنگاه ما به تو تسلیم می‌شویم.»

⁴Then the messengers came to Gibeah of Saul, and spoke these words in the ears of the people: and all the people lifted up their voice, and wept.

⁴ وقتی قاصدان به جبعه که مسکن شائول بود، آمدند و به مردم از وضع بد خود خبر دادند، همگی با آواز بلند گریه کردند.

⁵Behold, Saul came following the oxen out of the field; and Saul said, “What ails the people that they weep?” They told him the words of the men of Jabesh.

⁵ در این وقت شائول با گاوهای خود از مزرعه به شهر می‌آمد. پس پرسید: «چه شده است‌؟ چرا همه گریه می‌کنند؟» آنها او را از خبری که قاصدان یابیش آورده بودند آگاه ساختند.

⁶The Spirit of God came mightily on Saul when he heard those words, and his anger was kindled greatly.

⁶ وقتی شائول آن سخنان را شنید، روح خداوند بر او قرار گرفت و بشدّت خشمگین شد.

⁷He took a yoke of oxen, and cut them in pieces, and sent them throughout all the borders of Israel by the hand of messengers, saying, “Whoever doesn’t come forth after Saul and after Samuel, so shall it be done to his oxen.” The dread of Yahweh fell on the people, and they came out as one man.

⁷ آنگاه یک جفت گاو را گرفته آنها را تکه‌تکه کرد و به قاصدان داد تا به سراسر کشور اسرائیل تقسیم کنند و به مردم بگویند: «هرکسی که نیاید و به دنبال شائول و سموئیل نرود، گاوهایش به چنین سرنوشتی دچار می‌شوند.» مردم همه از شنیدن این خبر به وحشت افتادند و ترس خدا همه را فراگرفت. بنابراین همه با هم برای جنگ آماده شدند.

⁸He numbered them in Bezek; and the children of Israel were three hundred thousand, and the men of Judah thirty thousand.

⁸ وقتی در بازق آنها را شمردند، تعدادشان سیصد هزار نفر از اسرائیل به اضافهٔ سی هزار نفر از یهودا بود.

⁹They said to the messengers who came, “Thus you shall tell the men of Jabesh Gilead, ‘Tomorrow, by the time the sun is hot, you shall have deliverance.’” The messengers came and told the men of Jabesh; and they were glad.

⁹ آنها به قاصدان یابیشی گفتند: «به مردم خود بگویید فردا پیش از ظهر نجات می‌یابند.» چون قاصدان به یابیش آمدند و پیغام شائول را به مردم رساندند همگی خوشحال شدند.

¹⁰Therefore the men of Jabesh said, “Tomorrow we will come out to you, and you shall do with us all that seems good to you.”

¹⁰ پس مردم یابیش به ناحاش گفتند: «ما فردا خود را تسلیم می‌کنیم، آنگاه هرچه دلتان بخواهد با ما بکنید.»

¹¹It was so on the next day, that Saul put the people in three companies; and they came into the midst of the camp in the morning watch, and struck the Ammonites until the heat of the day: and it happened, that those who remained were scattered, so that no two of them were left together.

¹¹ روز دیگر شائول آمد و مردم را به سه دسته تقسیم کرد و هنگام صبح یک حملهٔ ناگهانی را بر عمونیان شروع نموده، تا ظهر به کشتار آنها پرداخت. کسانی‌که باقی ماندند، طوری پراکنده شدند که حتّی دو نفرشان هم در یک‌‌جا با هم دیده نمی‌شدند.

¹²The people said to Samuel, “Who is he who said, ‘Shall Saul reign over us?’ Bring those men, that we may put them to death!”

¹² بعد مردم به سموئیل گفتند: «‌کجا هستند آن کسانی‌که می‌گفتند شائول نباید پادشاه ما باشد؟ آنها را بیاورید تا سرهایشان را از تن جدا کنیم.»

¹³Saul said, “There shall not a man be put to death this day; for today Yahweh has worked deliverance in Israel.”

¹³ امّا شائول گفت: «حتّی یک نفر هم نباید در این روز کشته شود، زیرا خداوند امروز اسرائیل را نجات داد.»

¹⁴Then Samuel said to the people, “Come, and let us go to Gilgal, and renew the kingdom there.”

¹⁴ بعد سموئیل به مردم گفت: «بیایید به جلجال برویم و سلطنت را سر از نو برقرار کنیم.» پس همهٔ مردم به جلجال رفتند. در آنجا شائول را در حضور خداوند، پادشاه خود ساختند و برای خداوند قربانی سلامتی تقدیم نمودند و شائول و همهٔ مردم اسرائیل با هم جشن گرفتند.

¹⁵All the people went to Gilgal; and there they made Saul king before Yahweh in Gilgal; and there they offered sacrifices of peace offerings before Yahweh; and there Saul and all the men of Israel rejoiced greatly.

¹⁵ پس همهٔ مردم به جلجال رفتند. در آنجا شائول را در حضور خداوند، پادشاه خود ساختند و برای خداوند قربانی سلامتی تقدیم نمودند و شائول و همهٔ مردم اسرائیل با هم جشن گرفتند.
