¹Now the Philistines gathered together their armies to battle; and they were gathered together at Socoh, which belongs to Judah, and encamped between Socoh and Azekah, in Ephesdammim.

¹ فلسطینیان ارتش خود را برای جنگ در سوکوه، در سرزمین یهودیه جمع کردند و در افس دمیم، بین سوکوه و عزیقه اردو زدند.

²Saul and the men of Israel were gathered together, and encamped in the valley of Elah, and set the battle in array against the Philistines.

² و همچنین شائول و مردان جنگی اسرائیل نیز جمع شده در درّهٔ ایلاه اردو زدند و یک خط دفاعی در مقابل فلسطینیان تشکیل دادند.

³The Philistines stood on the mountain on the one side, and Israel stood on the mountain on the other side: and there was a valley between them.

³ فلسطینیان در یک طرف، بالای کوه ایستادند و اسرائیلیان بر کوه مقابل در طرف دیگر، درحالی‌که درّه‌ای در بین ایشان قرار داشت.

⁴There went out a champion out of the camp of the Philistines, named Goliath, of Gath, whose height was six cubits and a span.

⁴ آنگاه مرد مبارزی به نام جلیات که از اهالی جت بود از اردوی فلسطینیان به میدان آمد. قد او در حدود سه متر بود.

⁵He had a helmet of brass on his head, and he was clad with a coat of mail; and the weight of the coat was five thousand shekels of brass.

⁵ کلاهخود برنزی بر سر، زره برنزی به وزن پنجاه و هفت کیلو به تَن

⁶He had brass shin armor on his legs, and a javelin of brass between his shoulders.

⁶ و ساق‌بند برنزی به پا داشت. زوبین برنزی روی شانه‌هایش بود

⁷The staff of his spear was like a weaver’s beam; and his spear’s head weighed six hundred shekels of iron: and his shield bearer went before him.

⁷ و چوب نیزه‌اش به کلفتی چوب نساجان و سرنیزه‌اش از آهن و به وزن هفت کیلو بود. سلاحدارش پیشاپیش او با سپر بزرگی می‌رفت.

⁸He stood and cried to the armies of Israel, and said to them, “Why have you come out to set your battle in array? Am I not a Philistine, and you servants to Saul? Choose a man for yourselves, and let him come down to me.

⁸ او در آنجا ایستاد و با صدای بلند به سپاه اسرائیل گفت: «آیا لازم بود که با این‌همه سپاه برای جنگ بیایید؟ من از طرف فلسطینیان به میدان آمده‌ام و شما هم که از مردان شائول هستید، یک نفر را از طرف خود برای جنگ با من بفرستید.

⁹If he be able to fight with me, and kill me, then will we be your servants; but if I prevail against him, and kill him, then you will be our servants, and serve us.”

⁹ اگر بتواند با من بجنگد و مرا بکشد، آنگاه ما همه غلام شما می‌شویم. و اگر من بر او غالب شدم و او را کشتم، در آن صورت شما غلام ما می‌شوید و ما را خدمت می‌کنید.»

¹⁰The Philistine said, “I defy the armies of Israel this day! Give me a man, that we may fight together!”

¹⁰ او اضافه کرد: «من امروز مبارز می‌طلبم. پس یک ‌نفر را بفرستید تا با من بجنگد.»

¹¹When Saul and all Israel heard those words of the Philistine, they were dismayed, and greatly afraid.

¹¹ وقتی شائول و سپاه اسرائیل سخنان او را شنیدند جرأت خود را از دست دادند و بسیار ترسیدند.

¹²Now David was the son of that Ephrathite of Bethlehem Judah, whose name was Jesse; and he had eight sons: and the man was an old man in the days of Saul, stricken among men.

¹² داوود، پسر یسای افراتی که از اهالی بیت‌لحم و از طایفهٔ یهودا بود، هفت برادر داشت. پدرش در زمان پادشاهی شائول بسیار پیر و سالخورده شده بود.

¹³The three eldest sons of Jesse had gone after Saul to the battle: and the names of his three sons who went to the battle were Eliab the firstborn, and next to him Abinadab, and the third Shammah.

¹³ سه برادر بزرگ او به ترتیب، الیاب، ابیناداب و شمه نام داشتند که با سپاه شائول برای جنگ آمده بودند.

¹⁴David was the youngest; and the three eldest followed Saul.

¹⁴ داوود برادر کوچکتر بود. آن سه برادر با شائول ماندند

¹⁵Now David went back and forth from Saul to feed his father’s sheep at Bethlehem.

¹⁵ و داوود گاه‌به‌گاه به بیت‌لحم برمی‌گشت تا از گلّه‌های پدر خود نگهبانی کند.

¹⁶The Philistine drew near morning and evening, and presented himself forty days.

¹⁶ در عین حال آن فلسطینی تا چهل روز، صبح و شام به میدان می‌آمد و مبارز می‌طلبید.

¹⁷Jesse said to David his son, “Now take for your brothers an ephah 1 ephah is about 22 litres or about 2/3 of a bushel of this parched grain, and these ten loaves, and carry them quickly to the camp to your brothers;

¹⁷ یک روز یَسی به داوود گفت: «این ده‌ کیلو غلّهٔ برشته را با ده‌ نان بردار و هرچه زودتر برای برادرانت در اردوگاه ببر.

¹⁸and bring these ten cheeses to the captain of their thousand, and see how your brothers are doing, and bring back news.”

¹⁸ همچنین این پنیرها را هم برای فرماندهان ایشان ببر و ببین که برادرانت چطور هستند و از سلامتی ایشان برای من نشانه‌ای بیاور.»

¹⁹Now Saul, and they, and all the men of Israel, were in the valley of Elah, fighting with the Philistines.

¹⁹ در همین وقت شائول و سپاهیان او در درّهٔ ایلاه با فلسطینیان در جنگ بودند.

²⁰David rose up early in the morning, and left the sheep with a keeper, and took, and went, as Jesse had commanded him; and he came to the place of the wagons, as the army which was going forth to the fight shouted for the battle.

²⁰ داوود صبح زود برخاست و گلّه را به چوپان سپرد. آذوقه را برداشت و طبق راهنمایی پدر خود رهسپار اردوگاه شد و دید که سپاه اسرائیل با فریاد روانهٔ میدان جنگ است.

²¹Israel and the Philistines put the battle in array, army against army.

²¹ لحظه‌ای بعد هر دو لشکر مقابل هم صف آراستند.

²²David left his baggage in the hand of the keeper of the baggage, and ran to the army, and came and greeted his brothers.

²² داوود چیزهایی را که با خود آورده بود به نگهبانان اردو سپرد و خودش به میدان جنگ رفت تا احوال برادران خود را بپرسد.

²³As he talked with them, behold, there came up the champion, the Philistine of Gath, Goliath by name, out of the ranks of the Philistines, and spoke according to the same words: and David heard them.

²³ در همین موقع مبارز فلسطینی که نامش جلیات و از شهر جت بود، از اردوگاه فلسطینیان خارج شد و مانند گذشته مبارز طلبید و داوود شنید.

²⁴All the men of Israel, when they saw the man, fled from him, and were terrified.

²⁴ همین که سپاهیان اسرائیل او را دیدند، از ترس فرار کردند.

²⁵The men of Israel said, “Have you seen this man who has come up? He has surely come up to defy Israel. It shall be, that the man who kills him, the king will enrich him with great riches, and will give him his daughter, and make his father’s house free in Israel.”

²⁵ گفتند: «آن مرد را دیدید؟ او آمده است که آبروی تمام سپاه اسرائیل را ببرد. پادشاه اعلام کرده است که هرکسی او را بکشد جایزهٔ خوبی به او می‌بخشد و دختر خود را هم به او می‌دهد. و نیز تمام خاندانش از دادن مالیات معاف می‌شوند.»

²⁶David spoke to the men who stood by him, saying, “What shall be done to the man who kills this Philistine, and takes away the reproach from Israel? For who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the living God?”

²⁶ داوود از کسانی‌که آنجا ایستاده بودند، پرسید: «کسی‌که آن فلسطینی را بکشد و اسرائیل را از این ننگ رهایی دهد، چه پاداشی می‌گیرد؟ این فلسطینی کافر کسیت که سپاه خدای زنده را این‌طور تحقیر و رسوا می‌کند؟»

²⁷The people answered him in this way, saying, “So shall it be done to the man who kills him.”

²⁷ آنها گفتند: «او همان پاداشی را می‌گیرد که پیشتر گفتیم.»

²⁸Eliab his eldest brother heard when he spoke to the men; and Eliab’s anger was kindled against David, and he said, “Why have you come down? With whom have you left those few sheep in the wilderness? I know your pride, and the naughtiness of your heart; for you have come down that you might see the battle.”

²⁸ چون الیاب، برادر بزرگ او دید که داوود با آن مردان حرف می‌زند، خشمگین شد و پرسید: «اینجا چه می‌کنی؟ آن چند تا گوسفند را در بیابان، پیش چه کسی گذاشتی؟ من تو آدم بدجنس را می‌شناسم و می‌دانم که به بهانهٔ دیدن جنگ آمده‌ای.»

²⁹David said, “What have I now done? Is there not a cause?”

²⁹ داوود گفت: «من چه کرده‌ام؟ تنها یک سؤال کردم.»

³⁰He turned away from him toward another, and spoke like that again; and the people answered him again the same way.

³⁰ این را گفت و رو به طرف شخص دیگری کرده، سؤال خود را تکرار نمود و هر کدام همان یک جواب را به او دادند.

³¹When the words were heard which David spoke, they rehearsed them before Saul; and he sent for him.

³¹ وقتی سخنان داوود به گوش شائول رسید، شائول او را به حضور خود خواند.

³²David said to Saul, “Let no man’s heart fail because of him. Your servant will go and fight with this Philistine.”

³² داوود به پادشاه گفت: «نگران نباشید. من می‌روم و با آن فلسطینی می‌جنگم.»

³³Saul said to David, “You are not able to go against this Philistine to fight with him; for you are but a youth, and he a man of war from his youth.”

³³ شائول به داوود گفت: «تو نمی‌توانی حریف آن فلسطینی شوی، زیرا تو جوانی بی‌تجربه هستی و او از جوانی شخصی جنگجو بوده است.»

³⁴David said to Saul, “Your servant was keeping his father’s sheep; and when a lion or a bear came, and took a lamb out of the flock,

³⁴ امّا داوود در جواب گفت: «این غلامت چوپانی گلّهٔ پدر خود را کرده است. هرگاه شیر یا خرس بیاید و برّه‌ای را از گلّه ببرد،

³⁵I went out after him, and struck him, and rescued it out of his mouth. When he arose against me, I caught him by his beard, and struck him, and killed him.

³⁵ من بدنبالش رفته و آن را از دهان حیوان درّنده نجات می‌دهم. اگر به من حمله کند، گلویش را گرفته و آن را می‌کشم.

³⁶Your servant struck both the lion and the bear. This uncircumcised Philistine shall be as one of them, since he has defied the armies of the living God.”

³⁶ غلامت شیر و خرس را کشته است و با این فلسطینی کافر هم که سپاه خدای زنده را بی‌حرمت می‌کند، همان معامله را می‌نماید.

³⁷David said, “Yahweh who delivered me out of the paw of the lion, and out of the paw of the bear, he will deliver me out of the hand of this Philistine.” Saul said to David, “Go; and Yahweh shall be with you.”

³⁷ خداوندی که مرا از چنگ و دندان شیر و خرس نجات داده است، از دست این فلسطینی هم نجات می‌دهد.» پس شائول موافقت کرده گفت: «برو خداوند همراهت باشد.»

³⁸Saul dressed David with his clothing. He put a helmet of brass on his head, and he clad him with a coat of mail.

³⁸ آنگاه شائول لباس جنگی خود را به داوود پوشانید. کلاهخود برنزی به سرش گذاشت و زره به تنش کرد.

³⁹David strapped his sword on his clothing, and he tried to move; for he had not tested it. David said to Saul, “I can’t go with these; for I have not tested them.” David took them off.

³⁹ داوود شمشیر شائول را به کمر بست و دو سه قدم راه رفت ولی دید که نمی‌تواند با آن لباسها حرکت کند. او به شائول گفت: «من به این لباسها عادت ندارم.» پس آنها را از تنش بیرون آورد.

⁴⁰He took his staff in his hand, and chose for himself five smooth stones out of the brook, and put them in the shepherd’s bag which he had, even in his wallet. His sling was in his hand; and he drew near to the Philistine.

⁴⁰ سپس چوبدستی خود را به دست گرفت و پنج تا سنگ صاف از وادی برداشت و در کیسهٔ چوپانی خود انداخت. و فلاخن خود را برداشته و به طرف آن فلسطینی رفت.

⁴¹The Philistine came on and drew near to David; and the man who bore the shield went before him.

⁴¹ فلسطینی هم درحالی‌که سربازی سپر او را در جلوی او می‌برد به طرف داوود رفت.

⁴²When the Philistine looked about, and saw David, he disdained him; for he was but a youth, and ruddy, and withal of a fair face.

⁴² وقتی فلسطینی، خوب به داوود نگاه کرد، او را مسخره نمود. چون به نظر او داوود پسری خوشرو و ظریف بود.

⁴³The Philistine said to David, “Am I a dog, that you come to me with sticks?” The Philistine cursed David by his gods.

⁴³ او به داوود گفت: «آیا من سگ هستم که با چوب برای مقابلهٔ من می‌آیی؟» پس داوود را به نام خدایان خود لعنت کرد.

⁴⁴The Philistine said to David, “Come to me, and I will give your flesh to the birds of the sky, and to the animals of the field.”

⁴⁴ بعد به داوود گفت: «بیا تا گوشتت را به مرغان هوا و درّندگان صحرا بدهم.»

⁴⁵Then David said to the Philistine, “You come to me with a sword, and with a spear, and with a javelin: but I come to you in the name of Yahweh of Armies, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied.

⁴⁵ داوود به فلسطینی جواب داد: «تو با شمشیر و نیزه نزد من می‌‌آیی و من به نام خداوند متعال، خدای اسرائیل که تو او را حقیر شمردی، نزد تو می‌آیم.

⁴⁶Today, Yahweh will deliver you into my hand. I will strike you, and take your head from off you. I will give the dead bodies of the army of the Philistines this day to the birds of the sky, and to the wild animals of the earth; that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel,

⁴⁶ امروز خداوند مرا بر تو پیروز می‌گرداند. من تو را می‌کشم و سرت را از تن جدا می‌کنم و لاشهٔ سپاهیانت را به مرغان هوا و درّندگان صحرا می‌دهم تا همهٔ مردم روی زمین بدانند که خدایی در اسرائیل هست

⁴⁷and that all this assembly may know that Yahweh doesn’t save with sword and spear: for the battle is Yahweh’s, and he will give you into our hand.”

⁴⁷ و همهٔ کسانی‌که در اینجا حاضرند، شاهد باشند که پیروزی با شمشیر و نیزه به دست نمی‌آید، زیرا جنگ، جنگ خداوند است و او ما را بر شما پیروز می‌سازد.»

⁴⁸It happened, when the Philistine arose, and came and drew near to meet David, that David hurried, and ran toward the army to meet the Philistine.

⁴⁸ وقتی‌که فلسطینی از جای خود حرکت کرد و می‌خواست به داوود نزدیک شود، داوود فوراً برای مقابله به سوی او شتافت.

⁴⁹David put his hand in his bag, took a stone, and slung it, and struck the Philistine in his forehead; and the stone sank into his forehead, and he fell on his face to the earth.

⁴⁹ دست خود را در کیسه کرد و یک سنگ برداشت و در فلاخن گذاشت و پیشانی فلسطینی را نشانه گرفت. سنگ به پیشانی او فرو رفت و او را نقش بر زمین نمود.

⁵⁰So David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and with a stone, and struck the Philistine, and killed him; but there was no sword in the hand of David.

⁵⁰ داوود با یک فلاخن و یک سنگ بر فلسطینی غالب شد و درحالی‌که هیچ شمشیری در دست او نبود، او را کشت.

⁵¹Then David ran, and stood over the Philistine, and took his sword, and drew it out of its sheath, and killed him, and cut off his head therewith. When the Philistines saw that their champion was dead, they fled.

⁵¹ بعد داوود رفت و بالای سر فلسطینی ایستاد، شمشیر او را از غلاف کشید و او را کشت و سرش را از تن جدا کرد. وقتی فلسطینیان دیدند که پهلوانشان کشته شد، همگی فرار کردند.

⁵²The men of Israel and of Judah arose, and shouted, and pursued the Philistines, until you come to Gai, and to the gates of Ekron. The wounded of the Philistines fell down by the way to Shaaraim, even to Gath, and to Ekron.

⁵² بعد لشکر اسرائیل و یهودا برخاستند و با فریاد به تعقیب فلسطینیان تا جت و حتّی دروازه‌های عقرون پرداختند به طوری که جاده‌ای که به طرف شعریم و جت و عقرون می‌رفت پر از اجساد مردگان بود.

⁵³The children of Israel returned from chasing after the Philistines, and they plundered their camp.

⁵³ سپس دست از تعقیب کشیده برگشتند و اردوگاه فلسطینیان را غارت نمودند.

⁵⁴David took the head of the Philistine, and brought it to Jerusalem; but he put his armor in his tent.

⁵⁴ داوود سر بریدهٔ جلیات را گرفته به اورشلیم برد. امّا اسلحهٔ او را در چادر خودش نگاه ‌داشت.

⁵⁵When Saul saw David go forth against the Philistine, he said to Abner, the captain of the army, “Abner, whose son is this youth?” Abner said, “As your soul lives, O king, I can’t tell.”

⁵⁵ وقتی‌که داوود برای جنگ با فلسطینی می‌رفت، شائول از فرمانده سپاه خود، ابنیر پرسید: «این جوان پسر کیست؟» ابنیر جواب داد: «پادشاها به جان تو قسم که من نمی‌دانم.»

⁵⁶The king said, “Inquire whose son the young man is!”

⁵⁶ پادشاه به ابنیر گفت: «برو بپرس که این جوان پسر کیست.»

⁵⁷As David returned from the slaughter of the Philistine, Abner took him, and brought him before Saul with the head of the Philistine in his hand.

⁵⁷ پس از آنکه داوود فلسطینی را کشت و برگشت، ابنیر او را به نزد شائول برد. داوود هنوز سَر جلیات را با خود داشت و شائول از او پرسید: «ای جوان، پدر تو کیست؟» داوود جواب داد: «پدر من بندهٔ شما، یسای بیت‌لحمی است.»

⁵⁸Saul said to him, “Whose son are you, you young man?” David answered, “I am the son of your servant Jesse the Bethlehemite.”

⁵⁸ و شائول از او پرسید: «ای جوان، پدر تو کیست؟» داوود جواب داد: «پدر من بندهٔ شما، یسای بیت‌لحمی است.»
