¹The Ziphites came to Saul to Gibeah, saying, “Doesn’t David hide himself in the hill of Hachilah, which is before the desert?”

¹ چند نفر از اهالی زیف نزد شائول به جبعه آمده گفتند: «داوود در تپّهٔ حخیله که روبه‌روی بیابان است خود را پنهان کرده است.»

²Then Saul arose, and went down to the wilderness of Ziph, having three thousand chosen men of Israel with him, to seek David in the wilderness of Ziph.

² پس شائول با سه هزار نفر از بهترین سربازان خود در تعقیب داوود به زیف رفت.

³Saul encamped in the hill of Hachilah, which is before the desert, by the way. But David stayed in the wilderness, and he saw that Saul came after him into the wilderness.

³ شائول در تپّهٔ حخیله که در سر راه و در شرق بیابان بود اردو زد. داوود هنوز در بیابان بود و وقتی‌که فهمید شائول به تعقیب او می‌آید،

⁴David therefore sent out spies, and understood that Saul had certainly come.

⁴ جاسوسانی را فرستاد تا از آمدن شائول به او خبر بدهند.

⁵David arose, and came to the place where Saul had encamped; and David saw the place where Saul lay, and Abner the son of Ner, the captain of his army: and Saul lay within the place of the wagons, and the people were encamped around him.

⁵ بعد داوود به اردوگاه شائول رفت و جایی ‌را که شائول با ابنیر پسر نیر، فرمانده سپاه خوابیده بود، پیدا کرد و دید که شائول در درون اردو درحالی‌که محافظین به دور او حلقه زده بودند، خوابیده بود.

⁶Then answered David and said to Ahimelech the Hittite, and to Abishai the son of Zeruiah, brother to Joab, saying, “Who will go down with me to Saul to the camp?” Abishai said, “I will go down with you.”

⁶ بعد داوود آمد و به اخیملک حِتّی و ابیشای پسر صرویه، برادر یوآب گفت: «آیا کسی حاضر است که با من به اردوی شائول بیاید؟» ابیشای جواب داد: «من می‌آیم.»

⁷So David and Abishai came to the people by night: and, behold, Saul lay sleeping within the place of the wagons, with his spear stuck in the ground at his head; and Abner and the people lay around him.

⁷ پس داوود و ابیشای هنگام شب به اردوی شائول رفتند و دیدند که شائول در خواب بود، نیزه‌اش در بالای سرش بر زمین فرورفته است. ابنیر و محافظین دور او خوابیده بودند.

⁸Then Abishai said to David, “God has delivered up your enemy into your hand this day. Now therefore please let me strike him with the spear to the earth at one stroke, and I will not strike him the second time.”

⁸ ابیشای به داوود گفت: «‌خداوند امروز دشمن شما را به دست شما داد. حالا اجازه بفرما که او را با نیزهٔ خودش به زمین بکوبم. فقط یک ضربه کافی است که او را بکشم و ضربهٔ دوم لازم نیست.»

⁹David said to Abishai, “Don’t destroy him; for who can put forth his hand against Yahweh’s anointed, and be guiltless?”

⁹ داوود گفت: «نه، او را نکش. زیرا خداوند کسی را که دست خود را بر برگزیدهٔ خدا دراز کند، مجازات می‌کند.

¹⁰David said, “As Yahweh lives, Yahweh will strike him; or his day shall come to die; or he shall go down into battle and perish.

¹⁰ به خداوند زنده سوگند، که روزی خود خداوند او را هلاک خواهد کرد، یا روز مرگش فرا می‌رسد و یا در جنگ کشته خواهد شد.

¹¹Yahweh forbid that I should put forth my hand against Yahweh’s anointed; but now please take the spear that is at his head, and the jar of water, and let us go.”

¹¹ خدا نکند که من، کسی را که خداوند پادشاه ساخته است، بکشم! ولی یک کار می‌کنم. نیزه‌ای که بالای سرش است و کوزهٔ آبش را برمی‌داریم و از اینجا می‌رویم!»

¹²So David took the spear and the jar of water from Saul’s head; and they went away: and no man saw it, nor knew it, neither did any awake; for they were all asleep, because a deep sleep from Yahweh was fallen on them.

¹² پس داوود نیزه و کوزهٔ آب شائول را از بالای سرش برداشته به راه خود رفت. کسی ایشان را ندید و متوجّه آنها نگردید و حتّی کسی هم بیدار نشد، چون خداوند خواب سنگینی بر همگی آورده بود.

¹³Then David went over to the other side, and stood on the top of the mountain afar off; a great space being between them;

¹³ بعد داوود به آن طرف دیگر رفت و در بالای تپّه در فاصلهٔ دور و مطمئنی ایستاد.

¹⁴and David cried to the people, and to Abner the son of Ner, saying, “Don’t you answer, Abner?” Then Abner answered, “Who are you who cries to the king?”

¹⁴ آنگاه با صدای بلند رو به سپاه و ابنیر کرده گفت: «ابنیر جواب بده!» او جواب داد: «تو کیستی که با صدای خود پادشاه را بیدار می‌کنی؟»

¹⁵David said to Abner, “Aren’t you a man? Who is like you in Israel? Why then have you not kept watch over your lord, the king? For one of the people came in to destroy the king your lord.

¹⁵ داوود به ابنیر گفت: «تو چه مردی هستی؟ مقامی که تو داری هیچ‌کس دیگر در تمام اسرائیل ندارد. پس چرا از آقای خود، پادشاه به درستی نگهبانی نمی‌کنی؟ هم اکنون کسی وارد اردو شد تا او را بکشد و تو باخبر نشدی.

¹⁶This thing isn’t good that you have done. As Yahweh lives, you are worthy to die, because you have not kept watch over your lord, Yahweh’s anointed. Now see where the king’s spear is, and the jar of water that was at his head.”

¹⁶ به خداوند قسم، تو به‌خاطر اینکه از آقای خود که پادشاه برگزیدهٔ خداوند است به خوبی حفاظت نکردی، باید کشته شوی. آیا می‌دانی که نیزه و کوزهٔ آب پادشاه که بالای سرش بودند، کجا هستند؟»

¹⁷Saul knew David’s voice, and said, “Is this your voice, my son David?” David said, “It is my voice, my lord, O king.”

¹⁷ شائول صدای داوود را شناخت و پرسید: «پسرم داوود، این صدای توست؟» داوود جواب داد: «بلی، سرورم! این صدای من است.

¹⁸He said, “Why does my lord pursue after his servant? For what have I done? Or what evil is in my hand?

¹⁸ من چه کرده‌ام؟ گناه این خادم تو چیست که همیشه در تعقیبش هستی؟

¹⁹Now therefore, please let my lord the king hear the words of his servant. If it is so that Yahweh has stirred you up against me, let him accept an offering. But if it is the children of men, they are cursed before Yahweh; for they have driven me out this day that I shouldn’t cling to Yahweh’s inheritance, saying, ‘Go, serve other gods!’

¹⁹ از پادشاه درخواست می‌کنم به عرض این بنده گوش بدهد. اگر خداوند تو را برضد من برانگیخته است، من قربانی می‌دهم تا بخشیده شوم و اگر دسیسهٔ مردم باشد، لعنت خداوند بر ایشان باد! آنها مرا از سرزمین خداوند بیرون کرده‌اند تا در سرزمینی بیگانه بُتها را پرستش نمایم.

²⁰Now therefore, don’t let my blood fall to the earth away from the presence of Yahweh; for the king of Israel has come out to seek a flea, as when one hunts a partridge in the mountains.”

²⁰ نگذار خون من در سرزمین بیگانگان و دور از حضور خداوند به زمین بریزد. چرا پادشاه اسرائیل با این بزرگی مانند کسی‌که برای شکار یک کبک به کوهها می‌رود، به تعقیب من که مانند یک پشهٔ ناچیز هستم، باشد؟»

²¹Then Saul said, “I have sinned. Return, my son David; for I will no more do you harm, because my life was precious in your eyes this day. Behold, I have played the fool, and have erred exceedingly.”

²¹ شائول گفت: «من اشتباه کردم، بازگرد پسرم، من دیگر آزاری به تو نمی‌رسانم، زیرا تو امروز مرا از مرگ نجات دادی. رفتار من احمقانه بود و می‌دانم که خطای بزرگی از من سر زد.»

²²David answered, “Behold the spear, O king! Then let one of the young men come over and get it.

²² داوود گفت: «نیزه‌ات پیش من است. یکی از محافظینت را بفرست که آن را برایت بیاورد.

²³Yahweh will render to every man his righteousness and his faithfulness; because Yahweh delivered you into my hand today, and I wouldn’t put forth my hand against Yahweh’s anointed.

²³ خداوند هرکسی را از روی رفتار نیک و وفاداری او پاداش می‌دهد. خداوند تو را امروز به دست من داد، امّا چون تو پادشاه برگزیدهٔ خداوند هستی، من صدمه‌ای به تو نرساندم.

²⁴Behold, as your life was respected this day in my eyes, so let my life be respected in the eyes of Yahweh, and let him deliver me out of all oppression.”

²⁴ پس همان‌طور که من امروز زندگی تو را رهاندم، دعا می‌کنم که خداوند هم مرا از این‌همه مصیبت نجات دهد.» شائول به داوود گفت: «پسرم، خدا تو را برکت دهد. تو در آنچه که انجام دهی موفّق خواهی شد.» آنگاه داوود به راه خود رفت و شائول هم به خانهٔ خود برگشت.

²⁵Then Saul said to David, “You are blessed, my son David. You shall both do mightily, and shall surely prevail.” So David went his way, and Saul returned to his place.

²⁵ شائول به داوود گفت: «پسرم، خدا تو را برکت دهد. تو در آنچه که انجام دهی موفّق خواهی شد.» آنگاه داوود به راه خود رفت و شائول هم به خانهٔ خود برگشت.
