¹The word of Samuel came to all Israel. Now Israel went out against the Philistines to battle, and encamped beside Ebenezer: and the Philistines encamped in Aphek.

¹ در این وقت، فلسطینیان برای جنگ با اسرائیل جمع شدند و سربازان اسرائیل برای جنگ با آنها آماده شدند. آنها در ابن‌عزر و فلسطینیان در افیق اردو زدند.

²The Philistines put themselves in array against Israel: and when they joined battle, Israel was struck before the Philistines; and they killed of the army in the field about four thousand men.

² فلسطینیان به بنی‌اسرائیل حمله کردند و جنگ سختی در گرفت. بنی‌اسرائیل با از دست دادن چهل هزار نفر در میدان جنگ، از فلسطینیان شکست خوردند.

³When the people had come into the camp, the elders of Israel said, “Why has Yahweh struck us today before the Philistines? Let us get the ark of the covenant of Yahweh out of Shiloh to us, that it may come among us, and save us out of the hand of our enemies.”

³ بعد از جنگ، وقتی لشکر اسرائیل به اردوگاه خود برگشت، رهبران قوم گفتند: «چرا خداوند اجازه داد تا ما از دست فلسطینیان شکست بخوریم؟ بیایید که صندوق پیمان خداوند را از شیلوه بیاوریم تا خداوند در بین ما باشد و ما را از خطر دشمنان حفظ کند.»

⁴So the people sent to Shiloh; and they brought from there the ark of the covenant of Yahweh of Armies, who sits above the cherubim: and the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were there with the ark of the covenant of God.

⁴ پس چند نفر را به شیلوه فرستادند و صندوق پیمان خداوند متعال را که بر مجسمهٔ دو فرشتهٔ نگهبان قرار داشت، به میدان جنگ آوردند. حفنی و فینحاس، دو پسر عیلی، صندوق پیمان خداوند را همراهی می‌کردند.

⁵When the ark of the covenant of Yahweh came into the camp, all Israel shouted with a great shout, so that the earth rang again.

⁵ وقتی‌که مردم اسرائیل صندوق پیمان خداوند را دیدند، از خوشی چنان فریاد زدند که زمین به لرزه آمد.

⁶When the Philistines heard the noise of the shout, they said, “What does the noise of this great shout in the camp of the Hebrews mean?” They understood that the ark of Yahweh had come into the camp.

⁶ وقتی فلسطینیان صدای فریاد آنها را شنیدند، گفتند: «این صدای فریاد که از اردوی عبرانیان می‌آید، برای چیست؟» وقتی دانستند که آنها صندوق پیمان خداوند را به اردوگاه خود آورده‌اند،

⁷The Philistines were afraid, for they said, “God has come into the camp.” They said, “Woe to us! For there has not been such a thing before.

⁷ بسیار ترسیدند و گفتند: «تا به حال چنین چیزی اتّفاق نیفتاده است، اینک خدایی در اردوگاه آمده است.

⁸Woe to us! Who shall deliver us out of the hand of these mighty gods? These are the gods that struck the Egyptians with all kinds of plagues in the wilderness.

⁸ وای به حال ما، چه کسی می‌تواند ما را از دست خدایان نیرومند نجات بدهد؟ اینها همان خدایانی هستند که مردم مصر را در بیابان با بلاهای مختلفی از بین بردند.

⁹Be strong, and behave like men, O you Philistines, that you not be servants to the Hebrews, as they have been to you. Strengthen yourselves like men, and fight!”

⁹ ای فلسطینیان، شجاع و دلیر باشید، مبادا مانند عبرانیان که غلام ما بودند، ما غلام آنها شویم. از خود شجاعت نشان بدهید و مردانه بجنگید.»

¹⁰The Philistines fought, and Israel was struck, and they fled every man to his tent: and there was a very great slaughter; for there fell of Israel thirty thousand footmen.

¹⁰ به این ترتیب فلسطینیان به جنگ رفتند و اسرائیل را شکست دادند. لشکریان اسرائیل همه فرار کرده، به خانه‌های خود برگشتند. در این جنگ سی هزار سرباز اسرائیلی کشته شدند.

¹¹The ark of God was taken; and the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were slain.

¹¹ صندوق پیمان خدا به دست فلسطینیان افتاد و دو پسر عیلی، یعنی حفنی و فینحاس هم کشته شدند.

¹²There ran a man of Benjamin out of the army, and came to Shiloh the same day, with his clothes torn, and with earth on his head.

¹² در همان روز، مردی از طایفهٔ بنیامین از میدان جنگ گریخت و با جامه‌ای دریده و خاک بر سر پاشیده، خود را به شیلوه رسانید.

¹³When he came, behold, Eli was sitting on his seat by the road watching; for his heart trembled for the ark of God. When the man came into the city, and told it, all the city cried out.

¹³ وقتی به آنجا رسید، عیلی در کنار راه نشسته، منتظر شنیدن اخبار جنگ بود، زیرا به‌خاطر صندوق پیمان خدا نگران بود. همین که آن مرد داخل شهر شد و خبر جنگ را به مردم داد، تمام مردم شهر فریاد برآوردند.

¹⁴When Eli heard the noise of the crying, he said, “What does the noise of this tumult mean?” The man hurried, and came and told Eli.

¹⁴ چون صدای فریاد به گوش عیلی رسید پرسید: «چه خبر است؟» آن مرد دوان‌دوان آمد و ماجرا را به عیلی خبر داد.

¹⁵Now Eli was ninety-eight years old; and his eyes were set, so that he could not see.

¹⁵ در آن وقت عیلی نود و هشت ساله و چشمانش نابینا شده بودند.

¹⁶The man said to Eli, “I am he who came out of the army, and I fled today out of the army.” He said, “How did the matter go, my son?”

¹⁶ آن مرد به عیلی گفت: «من امروز از میدان جنگ گریخته به اینجا آمدم.» عیلی پرسید: «فرزندم، وضع جنگ چطور بود؟»

¹⁷He who brought the news answered, “Israel has fled before the Philistines, and there has been also a great slaughter among the people. Your two sons also, Hophni and Phinehas, are dead, and the ark of God has been captured.”

¹⁷ قاصد جواب داد: «لشکریان اسرائیل از دست فلسطینیان شکست خوردند و فرار کردند. مردم زیادی کشته شدند و در بین کشته شد‌گان دو پسرت، حفنی و فینحاس هم بودند. علاوه بر آن صندوق پیمان خدا هم به دست دشمن افتاد.»

¹⁸It happened, when he made mention of the ark of God, that Eli fell from off his seat backward by the side of the gate; and his neck broke, and he died; for he was an old man, and heavy. He had judged Israel forty years.

¹⁸ همین که عیلی از صندوق پیمان خداوند باخبر شد، از صندلی خود به پشت افتاد و گردنش شکست و جان داد، چون بسیار پیر و سنگین بود. عیلی مدّت چهل سال قوم اسرائیل را رهبری کرد.

¹⁹His daughter-in-law, Phinehas’ wife, was with child, near to be delivered. When she heard the news that the ark of God was taken, and that her father-in-law and her husband were dead, she bowed herself and gave birth; for her pains came on her.

¹⁹ عروس عیلی، زن فینحاس که حامله بود و زمان وضع حمل او نزدیک شده بود، وقتی شنید که صندوق پیمان خداوند به دست فلسطینیان افتاده و پدر شوهر و شوهرش هم مرده‌اند، درد زایمانش شروع شد. ناگهان خم شد و طفلی به دنیا آورد.

²⁰About the time of her death the women who stood by her said to her, “Don’t be afraid; for you have given birth to a son.” But she didn’t answer, neither did she regard it.

²⁰ او درحالی‌که جان می‌داد، زنان پرستار به او گفتند: «غصّه نخور، زیرا صاحب پسری شده‌ای.» امّا او جوابی نداد و به حرفشان اعتنایی نکرد.

²¹She named the child Ichabod, “Ichabod” means “no glory.” saying, “The glory has departed from Israel”; because the ark of God was taken, and because of her father-in-law and her husband.

²¹ طفل را «ایخابود» نامید، یعنی، جلال خدا اسرائیل را ترک کرد، زیرا صندوق پیمان خداوند و همچنین پدر شوهر و شوهرش از دست رفتند. پس گفت: «جلال خدا، اسرائیل را ترک کرد، چون صندوق پیمان خدا به دست دشمن افتاد.»

²²She said, “The glory has departed from Israel; for the ark of God is taken.”

²² پس گفت: «جلال خدا، اسرائیل را ترک کرد، چون صندوق پیمان خدا به دست دشمن افتاد.»
