¹Now I Paul, myself, entreat you by the humility and gentleness of Christ; I who in your presence am lowly among you, but being absent am bold toward you.

¹ اكنون من پولس به‌خاطر تواضع و ملایمت مسیح، شخصاً از شما درخواست می‌کنم -‌آری، همان پولس كه بنا به گفتهٔ بعضی از شما، پیش روی شما فروتن و ملایم ولی دور از شما گستاخ هستم-

²Yes, I beg you that I may not, when present, show courage with the confidence with which I intend to be bold against some, who consider us to be walking according to the flesh.

² از شما التماس می‌کنم كه مرا مجبور نسازید وقتی با شما هستم با گستاخی با شما رفتار كنم، چون تصمیم گرفتم در مقابل آنها كه گمان می‌کنند ما با انگیزه‌های دنیوی کار می‌کنیم، گستاخ باشم!

³For though we walk in the flesh, we don’t wage war according to the flesh;

³ مسلّماً ما در این دنیا به سر می‌بریم امّا جنگی كه می‌کنیم دنیوی و جسمانی نیست.

⁴for the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh, but mighty before God to the throwing down of strongholds,

⁴ اسلحهٔ جنگ ما سلاحهای معمولی نیست، بلكه از طرف خدا قدرت دارد تا دژها را منهدم سازد. ما هر نوع سفسطه

⁵throwing down imaginations and every high thing that is exalted against the knowledge of God, and bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ;

⁵ و هر مانعی كه در مقابل شناخت خدا قرار بگیرد از بین می‌بریم و تمام افكار و خیالات را تحت فرمان مسیح در می‌آوریم.

⁶and being in readiness to avenge all disobedience, when your obedience will be made full.

⁶ وقتی اطاعت شما از ما كامل شود، آن وقت كسانی را كه نافرمانی می‌کنند، مجازات خواهیم كرد.

⁷Do you look at things only as they appear in front of your face? If anyone trusts in himself that he is Christ’s, let him consider this again with himself, that, even as he is Christ’s, so also we are Christ’s.

⁷ به آنچه در جلوی چشمان شما قرار دارد توجّه كنید! آیا كسی در میان شما مطمئن است كه به مسیح تعلّق دارد؟ آن شخص باید قبول كند كه ما هم مثل او متعلّق به مسیح هستیم.

⁸For though I should boast somewhat abundantly concerning our authority, (which the Lord gave for building you up, and not for casting you down) I will not be disappointed,

⁸ شاید من دربارهٔ اختیاراتی كه خدا به من داده است بیش از اندازه به خود بالیده باشم، ولی پشیمان نیستم. زیرا خدا این قدرت و اختیار را برای بنای شما به من داده است و نه برای خرابی شما!

⁹that I may not seem as if I desire to terrify you by my letters.

⁹ فكر نكنید كه می‌خواهم با نامه‌های خود شما را بترسانم.

¹⁰For, “His letters,” they say, “are weighty and strong, but his bodily presence is weak, and his speech is despised.”

¹⁰ شاید كسی بگوید: «نامه‌های او سخت و مؤثرند ولی حضور او بی‌اثر و بیانش تعریفی ندارد.»

¹¹Let such a person consider this, that what we are in word by letters when we are absent, such are we also in deed when we are present.

¹¹ این اشخاص خاطرجمع باشند كه آنچه را از دور به وسیلهٔ نامه می‌نویسم هروقت بیایم، همان را به عمل خواهم آورد و تفاوتی در بین نخواهد بود.

¹²For we are not bold to number or compare ourselves with some of those who commend themselves. But they themselves, measuring themselves by themselves, and comparing themselves with themselves, are without understanding.

¹² البتّه ما جرأت آن را نداریم خود را با کسانی‌که خود را این‌قدر بزرگ می‌دانند، مقایسه كنیم و یا در یک سطح قرار دهیم. وقتی آنها خود را با یكدیگر می‌سنجند و با همدیگر مقایسه می‌کنند، نشان می‌دهند كه چقدر احمقند!

¹³But we will not boast beyond proper limits, but within the boundaries with which God appointed to us, which reach even to you.

¹³ و امّا ما نمی‌توانیم از آن حدّی كه برای ما تعیین شده، بیشتر فخر كنیم؛ یعنی به میزان خدمتی كه خدا به ما سپرده است و آن شامل خدمت شما نیز می‌شود.

¹⁴For we don’t stretch ourselves too much, as though we didn’t reach to you. For we came even as far as to you with the Good News of Christ,

¹⁴ وقتی ادّعا می‌کنیم كه كلیسای شما هم در محدودهٔ مأموریت ما قرار دارد از حدّ خود تجاوز نمی‌کنیم، زیرا ما اولین اشخاصی بودیم كه انجیل مسیح را به شما رسانیدیم.

¹⁵not boasting beyond proper limits in other men’s labors, but having hope that as your faith grows, we will be abundantly enlarged by you in our sphere of influence,

¹⁵ ما از آنچه دیگران در خارج از محدودهٔ مأموریت ما انجام داده‌اند، به خود نمی‌بالیم؛ بلكه امیدواریم كه ایمان شما رشد كند و ما بتوانیم دامنهٔ خدمت خود را وسیع‌تر سازیم،

¹⁶so as to preach the Good News even to the parts beyond you, not to boast in what someone else has already done.

¹⁶ تا سرانجام بتوانیم انجیل را در كشورهایی كه در آن‌سوی سرزمین شماست، اعلام نماییم و آن وقت لازم نیست كه ما به كاری كه قبلاً در حوزهٔ مأموریت شخصی دیگر انجام شده است، فخر كنیم.

¹⁷But “he who boasts, let him boast in the Lord.” Jeremiah 9:24

¹⁷ چنانکه كلام خدا می‌‌فرماید: «هرکه بخواهد فخر كند به خداوند فخر نماید.» زیرا خودستایی، شخص را در حضور خدا مقبول نمی‌سازد بلكه فقط وقتی خداوند از كسی تعریف نماید مورد پسند اوست.

¹⁸For it isn’t he who commends himself who is approved, but whom the Lord commends.

¹⁸ زیرا خودستایی، شخص را در حضور خدا مقبول نمی‌سازد بلكه فقط وقتی خداوند از كسی تعریف نماید مورد پسند اوست.
