¹Festus therefore, having come into the province, after three days went up to Jerusalem from Caesarea.

¹ فستوس سه روز بعد از آنكه زمام امور را در دست گرفت، از قیصریه به اورشلیم رفت.

²Then the high priest and the principal men of the Jews informed him against Paul, and they begged him,

² سران كاهنان و رهبران یهود اتّهامات و دعاوی خود را علیه پولس به اطّلاع او رسانیدند و از فستوس تقاضا كردند

³asking a favor against him, that he would summon him to Jerusalem; plotting to kill him on the way.

³ كه به آنان لطفی نماید و پولس را به اورشلیم بفرستد. آنان در كمین بودند تا بین راه او را به قتل برسانند.

⁴However Festus answered that Paul should be kept in custody at Caesarea, and that he himself was about to depart shortly.

⁴ فستوس پاسخ داد: «پولس در قیصریه تحت نظر است و خود من بزودی به آنجا برمی‌‌گردم.

⁵“Let them therefore,” said he, “that are in power among you go down with me, and if there is anything wrong in the man, let them accuse him.”

⁵ بنابراین كسانی از شما كه برایشان مقدور است با من به آنجا بیایند و چنانچه این شخص خطایی كرده است، علیه او اقامهٔ دعوی نمایند.»

⁶When he had stayed among them more than ten days, he went down to Caesarea, and on the next day he sat on the judgment seat, and commanded Paul to be brought.

⁶ فستوس در حدود هشت یا ده روز در اورشلیم به سر برد و سپس به قیصریه بازگشت. روز بعد در دادگاه حضور یافت و دستور داد پولس را آوردند.

⁷When he had come, the Jews who had come down from Jerusalem stood around him, bringing against him many and grievous charges which they could not prove,

⁷ وقتی پولس وارد شد، یهودیانی كه از اورشلیم آمده بودند دور او را گرفتند و اتّهامات سختی علیه او بیان كردند كه قادر به اثبات آنها نبودند.

⁸while he said in his defense, “Neither against the law of the Jews, nor against the temple, nor against Caesar, have I sinned at all.”

⁸ پولس از خود دفاع كرده گفت: «من نه نسبت به شریعت یهود مرتكب خطایی شده‌ام و نه علیه معبد بزرگ یا قیصر اقدامی کرده‌ام.»

⁹But Festus, desiring to gain favor with the Jews, answered Paul and said, “Are you willing to go up to Jerusalem, and be judged by me there concerning these things?”

⁹ امّا فستوس كه مایل بود مورد توجّه یهودیان قرار گیرد، رو به پولس كرد و گفت: «آیا می‌خواهی به اورشلیم بروی و در آنجا در حضور خود من محاكمه شوی؟»

¹⁰But Paul said, “I am standing before Caesar’s judgment seat, where I ought to be tried. I have done no wrong to the Jews, as you also know very well.

¹⁰ پولس جواب داد: «من هم اكنون در دادگاه قیصر یعنی در آنجایی كه باید محاكمه شوم ایستاده‌ام. چنانکه خود شما به خوبی آگاهید، من مرتكب هیچ جرمی علیه یهودیان نشده‌ام.

¹¹For if I have done wrong, and have committed anything worthy of death, I don’t refuse to die; but if none of those things is true that they accuse me of, no one can give me up to them. I appeal to Caesar!”

¹¹ اگر مجرم هستم و چنانکه كاری کرده‌ام كه مستوجب اعدام است، از مرگ نمی‌‌‌‌گریزم. امّا اگر مرتكب هیچ‌یک از کارهایی كه این اشخاص به من نسبت می‌دهند نشده‌ام، هیچ‌کس حق ندارد مرا به دست آنان بسپارد. من تقاضا می‌کنم كه قیصر شخصاً به پرونده من رسیدگی نماید.»

¹²Then Festus, when he had conferred with the council, answered, “You have appealed to Caesar. To Caesar you shall go.”

¹² فستوس پس از تبادل نظر با مشاوران خود پاسخ داد: «حال كه از قیصر دادخواهی می‌کنی به پیشگاه قیصر خواهی رفت.»

¹³Now when some days had passed, King Agrippa and Bernice arrived at Caesarea, and greeted Festus.

¹³ پس از مدّتی اغریپاس پادشاه و همسرش برنیكی به قیصریه آمدند تا به فستوس خیرمقدم بگویند

¹⁴As he stayed there many days, Festus laid Paul’s case before the king, saying, “There is a certain man left a prisoner by Felix;

¹⁴ و چون روزهای زیادی در آنجا ماندند، فستوس سوابق پولس را در اختیار پادشاه گذاشت و گفت: «یک زندانی در اینجاست، كه فیلیكِس او را به من تحویل داده است.

¹⁵about whom, when I was at Jerusalem, the chief priests and the elders of the Jews informed me, asking for a sentence against him.

¹⁵ وقتی به اورشلیم رفتم، سران كاهنان و مشایخ یهود از او رسماً به من شكایت كردند و تقاضای محكومیّت او را داشتند.

¹⁶To whom I answered that it is not the custom of the Romans to give up any man to destruction, before the accused has met the accusers face to face, and has had opportunity to make his defense concerning the matter laid against him.

¹⁶ من به آنان جواب دادم كه شیوهٔ روم این نیست كه متّهمی را به مدّعیان تسلیم نماید، مگر آنكه اول او را با مدّعیان خود روبه‌رو نموده و به او فرصتی بدهد كه در مورد این اتّهامات از خود دفاع كند.

¹⁷When therefore they had come together here, I didn’t delay, but on the next day sat on the judgment seat, and commanded the man to be brought.

¹⁷ پس وقتی به اینجا آمدند، من بدون اتلاف وقت در روز بعد در دادگاه حاضر شدم و دستور دادم او را بیاورند.

¹⁸Concerning whom, when the accusers stood up, they brought no charge of such things as I supposed;

¹⁸ وقتی مدّعیان او برخاستند و علیه او صحبت كردند، او را به هیچ‌یک از جرم‌هایی كه من انتظار داشتم، متّهم نساختند.

¹⁹but had certain questions against him about their own religion, and about one Jesus, who was dead, whom Paul affirmed to be alive.

¹⁹ فقط دربارهٔ دین خودشان و شخصی به نام عیسی كه مرده و پولس ادّعا می‌كند زنده است، اختلاف عقیده داشتند.

²⁰Being perplexed how to inquire concerning these things, I asked whether he was willing to go to Jerusalem and there be judged concerning these matters.

²⁰ چون در بررسی این امور تردید داشتم، از او پرسیدم که آیا مایل است به اورشلیم برود تا در آنجا به این موضوع رسیدگی شود.

²¹But when Paul had appealed to be kept for the decision of the emperor, I commanded him to be kept until I could send him to Caesar.”

²¹ امّا وقتی پولس تقاضا كرد كه تا زمانی‌که امپراتور به كارش رسیدگی نكرده تحت نظر بماند، من دستور دادم او را تحت نظر نگاه دارند تا در وقت مناسب او را به حضور قیصر بفرستم.»

²²Agrippa said to Festus, “I also would like to hear the man myself.” “Tomorrow,” he said, “you shall hear him.”

²² اغریپاس به فستوس گفت: «بسیار مایلم شخصاً سخنان او را بشنوم.» فستوس پاسخ داد: «بسیار خوب! فردا سخنان او را خواهید شنید.»

²³So on the next day, when Agrippa and Bernice had come with great pomp, and they had entered into the place of hearing with the commanding officers and principal men of the city, at the command of Festus, Paul was brought in.

²³ روز بعد اغریپاس و برنیكی با تشریفات تمام به دربار وارد شدند و با گروهی از سرهنگان و بزرگان شهر در آنجا جلوس نمودند. به فرمان فستوس پولس را حاضر كردند.

²⁴Festus said, “King Agrippa, and all men who are here present with us, you see this man, about whom all the multitude of the Jews petitioned me, both at Jerusalem and here, crying that he ought not to live any longer.

²⁴ در این وقت فستوس گفت: «ای اغریپاس پادشاه و ای تمام کسانی‌که در اینجا حضور دارید، شما مردی را روبه‌روی خود می‌بینید كه اكثر یهودیان، چه در اورشلیم و چه در اینجا، پیش من از او شكایت كرده‌اند و با فریاد خواسته‌اند كه او نباید دیگر زنده بماند.

²⁵But when I found that he had committed nothing worthy of death, and as he himself appealed to the emperor I determined to send him.

²⁵ نظر خود من این است كه كاری نكرده كه مستوجب مرگ باشد، ولی چون از امپراتور تقاضای دادخواهی كرده است، تصمیم گرفتم وی را به پیشگاه او بفرستم.

²⁶Of whom I have no certain thing to write to my lord. Therefore I have brought him forth before you, and especially before you, King Agrippa, that, after examination, I may have something to write.

²⁶ و چون مطلب مخصوصی ندارم كه به امپراتور بنویسم، او را در اینجا پیش شما و مخصوصاً به حضور شما اغریپاس پادشاه آوردم تا در نتیجهٔ این بازجویی مقدّماتی، بتوانم مطلبی تهیّه نموده برای او بنویسم، زیرا معقول به نظر نمی‌رسد كه یک زندانی را بدون مدارک كافی به نزد امپراتور بفرستم.»

²⁷For it seems to me unreasonable, in sending a prisoner, not to also specify the charges against him.”

²⁷ زیرا معقول به نظر نمی‌رسد كه یک زندانی را بدون مدارک كافی به نزد امپراتور بفرستم.»
