¹When it was determined that we should sail for Italy, they delivered Paul and certain other prisoners to a centurion named Julius, of the Augustan band.

¹ وقتی قرار بر این شد كه ما از راه دریا به ایتالیا سفر كنیم، پولس و چند زندانی دیگر را به سروانی به نام یولیوس از هنگ اوغسطس تحویل دادند.

²Embarking in a ship of Adramyttium, which was about to sail to places on the coast of Asia, we put to sea; Aristarchus, a Macedonian of Thessalonica, being with us.

² به كشتی ادرامیتینی كه عازم بندرهای استان آسیا بود سوار شدیم و حركت كردیم و اَرِسْتَرخُس مقدونی از اهالی تسالونیكی همراه ما بود.

³The next day, we touched at Sidon. Julius treated Paul kindly, and gave him permission to go to his friends and refresh himself.

³ روز بعد در بندر صیدون لنگر انداختیم و یولیوس به پولس محبّت كرد و اجازه داد كه در آنجا به دیدن دوستان خود برود و مایحتاج خود را از آنان بگیرد.

⁴Putting to sea from there, we sailed under the lee of Cyprus, because the winds were contrary.

⁴ از آنجا بار دیگر راه دریا را در پیش گرفتیم و چون باد از جهت مخالف می‌وزید از حاشیهٔ قبرس كه باد پناه بود، عبور نمودیم

⁵When we had sailed across the sea which is off Cilicia and Pamphylia, we came to Myra, a city of Lycia.

⁵ و پس از گذشتن از آبهای قیلیقیه و پمفیلیه به میرای لیكیه رسیدیم.

⁶There the centurion found a ship of Alexandria sailing for Italy, and he put us on board.

⁶ سروان در آنجا یک كشتی اسكندریه‌ای را كه عازم ایتالیا بود پیدا كرد و ما را سوار آن نمود.

⁷When we had sailed slowly many days, and had come with difficulty opposite Cnidus, the wind not allowing us further, we sailed under the lee of Crete, opposite Salmone.

⁷ روزهای زیادی به آهستگی پیش می‌رفتیم و با زحمت فراوان به بندر قنیدوس رسیدیم و چون باد مخالف ما بود، جهت دیگر را در پیش گرفتیم و از كنار دماغهٔ سَلْمُونی و ساحل جزیرهٔ كریت كه پناهگاه بود، راندیم.

⁸With difficulty sailing along it we came to a certain place called Fair Havens, near the city of Lasea.

⁸ به سختی از آنجا گذشته به نزدیكی‌های شهر لسائیه به محلی به نام «بندر نیک» رسیدیم.

⁹When much time had passed and the voyage was now dangerous, because the Fast had now already gone by, Paul admonished them,

⁹ مدّت زیادی در آنجا گذرانیده بودیم و دیگر ادامهٔ سفر ما با خطر روبه‌رو بود، زیرا مدّت زیادی از روز كفّاره، كه در اوایل پاییز است می‌گذشت. پس پولس به آنها نصیحت نموده

¹⁰and said to them, “Sirs, I perceive that the voyage will be with injury and much loss, not only of the cargo and the ship, but also of our lives.”

¹⁰ گفت: «آقایان، می‌بینم كه سفر ما از اینجا به بعد پرخطر خواهد بود. به كشتی و بار آن خسارت و زیان خواهد رسید و برای خود ما هم تلفات جانی خواهد داشت.»

¹¹But the centurion gave more heed to the master and to the owner of the ship than to those things which were spoken by Paul.

¹¹ امّا سروران به حرفهای ناخدای كشتی و صاحب آن بیشتر توجّه داشت تا به سخنان پولس

¹²Because the haven was not suitable to winter in, the majority advised going to sea from there, if by any means they could reach Phoenix, and winter there, which is a port of Crete, looking northeast and southeast.

¹² و نظر به اینكه آن بندر برای اقامت زمستانی نامناسب بود، اكثر آنان صلاح دانستند كه از آنجا حركت كنند تا شاید به فینکاس برسند و زمستان را در آنجا كه بندری كریتی و رو به شمال غربی و جنوب غربی است بگذرانند.

¹³When the south wind blew softly, supposing that they had obtained their purpose, they weighed anchor and sailed along Crete, close to shore.

¹³ پس وقتی نسیم جنوبی برخاست به تصوّر آنكه به مقصود خود رسیده‌‌اند، لنگر كشتی را برداشتند و از نزدیک كنارهٔ كریت گذشتیم.

¹⁴But before long, a stormy wind beat down from shore, which is called Euroclydon. Or, “a northeaster.”

¹⁴ امّا طولی نكشید كه باد شدیدی كه به باد شمال شرقی معروف است از خشكی به طرف ما برخاست و

¹⁵When the ship was caught, and couldn’t face the wind, we gave way to it, and were driven along.

¹⁵ به كشتی زد و ما قادر نبودیم كشتی را مستقیماً در خلاف جهت باد هدایت كنیم، بنابراین خود را به دست باد سپردیم تا با جریان آن پیش رویم.

¹⁶Running under the lee of a small island called Clauda, we were able, with difficulty, to secure the boat.

¹⁶ در پناه جزیرهٔ كوچكی به نام كاودا با زحمت زیاد توانستیم قایق كشتی را به اختیار خود درآوریم.

¹⁷After they had hoisted it up, they used cables to help reinforce the ship. Fearing that they would run aground on the Syrtis sand bars, they lowered the sea anchor, and so were driven along.

¹⁷ آنان قایق را به كشتی سوار كردند و با طناب اطراف كشتی را محكم بستند و از ترس اینكه مبادا كشتی در جاهای كم‌عمق خلیج صیدرا گیر كند، بادبان كشتی را پایین كشیدند و ما همچنان با جریان باد پیش می‌رفتیم.

¹⁸As we labored exceedingly with the storm, the next day they began to throw things overboard.

¹⁸ باد شدید ادامه داشت، به طوری‌ كه روز دوم بار كشتی را به دریا ریختند

¹⁹On the third day, they threw out the ship’s tackle with their own hands.

¹⁹ و در روز سوم اسباب و لوازم كشتی را با دست خود به دریا انداختند.

²⁰When neither sun nor stars shone on us for many days, and no small storm pressed on us, all hope that we would be saved was now taken away.

²⁰ روزهای متمادی نه آفتاب به چشم می‌خورد و نه ستارگان. باد همچنان با شدّت می‌وزید و دیگر هیچ امیدی به نجات ما نبود.

²¹When they had been long without food, Paul stood up in the middle of them, and said, “Sirs, you should have listened to me, and not have set sail from Crete, and have gotten this injury and loss.

²¹ وقتی‌که مدّت مدیدی بدون غذا راه پیمودند، پولس در میان ایشان ایستاد و گفت: «ای دوستان، كاش به حرفهای من گوش می‌دادید و از كریت سفر نمی‌کردید تا از این‌همه آسیب و زیان در امان باشید.

²²Now I exhort you to cheer up, for there will be no loss of life among you, but only of the ship.

²² خوب، حالا كه این‌طور شده از شما می‌خواهم كه خود را نبازید. هیچ آسیبی به جان كسی نخواهد رسید، فقط كشتی از دست خواهد رفت،

²³For there stood by me this night an angel, belonging to the God whose I am and whom I serve,

²³ زیرا دیشب فرشتهٔ آن خدایی كه من از آن او هستم و او را می‌پرستم در كنار من ایستاد

²⁴saying, ‘Don’t be afraid, Paul. You must stand before Caesar. Behold, God has granted you all those who sail with you.’

²⁴ و گفت: 'ای پولس نترس. زیرا تو باید در حضور امپراتور حاضر شوی و خدا جان همهٔ همسفرانت را به تو بخشیده است.'

²⁵Therefore, sirs, cheer up! For I believe God, that it will be just as it has been spoken to me.

²⁵ پس آقایان باید قویدل باشید، زیرا من به خدا ایمان دارم و می‌دانم همان‌طور كه به من گفته است خواهد شد.

²⁶But we must run aground on a certain island.”

²⁶ ولی به كنارهٔ یكی از این جزایر رانده خواهیم شد.»

²⁷But when the fourteenth night had come, as we were driven back and forth in the Adriatic Sea, about midnight the sailors surmised that they were drawing near to some land.

²⁷ وقتی شب چهاردهم فرا رسید و ما هنوز در دریای آدریاتیک از این‌سو به آن‌سو رانده می‌شدیم نزدیک نصف شب ملاحان احساس كردند كه به خشكی نزدیک می‌شوند.

²⁸They took soundings, and found twenty fathoms. 20 fathoms = 120 feet = 36.6 meters After a little while, they took soundings again, and found fifteen fathoms. 15 fathoms = 90 feet = 27.4 meters

²⁸ پس عمق پیمایی كردند و به عمق تقریباً سی و هشت متر رسیدند و به فاصلهٔ كوتاهی دوباره اندازه‌گیری نمودند و به عمق بیست و هفت متری رسیدند

²⁹Fearing that we would run aground on rocky ground, they let go four anchors from the stern, and wished for daylight.

²⁹ و چون می‌ترسیدند كه به صخره‌ها بخوریم، چهار لنگر از پشت كشتی به دریا انداختند و دعا می‌کردند كه زودتر روز شود.

³⁰As the sailors were trying to flee out of the ship, and had lowered the boat into the sea, pretending that they would lay out anchors from the bow,

³⁰ ملاحان می‌خواستند كشتی را ترک كنند و برای عملی ساختن نقشهٔ خود به بهانهٔ اینكه می‌خواهند لنگرها را از جلوی كشتی به دریا بیندازند قایق را به آب انداختند.

³¹Paul said to the centurion and to the soldiers, “Unless these stay in the ship, you can’t be saved.”

³¹ امّا پولس به سروان و سربازان گفت: «اگر ملاحان در كشتی نمانند نجات شما ممكن نخواهد بود.»

³²Then the soldiers cut away the ropes of the boat, and let it fall off.

³² پس سربازان طنابهای قایق را بریدند و آن را رها كردند.

³³While the day was coming on, Paul begged them all to take some food, saying, “This day is the fourteenth day that you wait and continue fasting, having taken nothing.

³³ كمی قبل از سپیده‌دَم پولس به همه اصرار می‌کرد كه چیزی بخورند. او گفت: «امروز چهارده روز است كه در بلاتكلیفی به سر می‌برید و چیزی نخورده‌اید.

³⁴Therefore I beg you to take some food, for this is for your safety; for not a hair will perish from any of your heads.”

³⁴ تمنّا دارم چیزی بخورید زیرا نجات جان شما بسته به آن است. مویی از سر هیچ‌یک از شما كم نخواهد شد.»

³⁵When he had said this, and had taken bread, he gave thanks to God in the presence of all, and he broke it, and began to eat.

³⁵ با این سخنان نان را برداشت و در حضور همهٔ آنان پس از آنكه خدا را شكر نمود پاره كرد و شروع به خوردن نمود.

³⁶Then they all cheered up, and they also took food.

³⁶ پس همه قویدل گشتند و غذا خوردند.

³⁷In all, we were two hundred seventy-six souls on the ship.

³⁷ (تعداد ما در كشتی جمعاً دویست و هفتاد و شش نفر بود.)

³⁸When they had eaten enough, they lightened the ship, throwing out the wheat into the sea.

³⁸ پس از آنكه سیر شدند، بقیّهٔ غلّه را به دریا ریختند تا كشتی را سبک نمایند.

³⁹When it was day, they didn’t recognize the land, but they noticed a certain bay with a beach, and they decided to try to drive the ship onto it.

³⁹ وقتی صبح شد، ملاحان خشكی را نشناختند امّا متوجّه خلیجی با ساحل شنی شدند. تصمیم گرفتند كه در صورت امكان كشتی را در آنجا به گِل بنشانند.

⁴⁰Casting off the anchors, they left them in the sea, at the same time untying the rudder ropes. Hoisting up the foresail to the wind, they made for the beach.

⁴⁰ سپس ریسمان لنگرها را بریدند و آنها را در دریا رها كردند و همان موقع بندهای سكّان را هم شُل كردند و بادبان جلوی كشتی را بالا كشیدند و كشتی را یكراست به طرف ساحل راندند.

⁴¹But coming to a place where two seas met, they ran the vessel aground. The bow struck and remained immovable, but the stern began to break up by the violence of the waves.

⁴¹ كشتی به یكی از تپّه‌های زیر آب برخورد كرد و در آنجا گیر نموده دماغهٔ كشتی ثابت و بی‌حرکت ماند ولی قسمت عقب در نتیجهٔ برخورد با امواج شدید درهم شكست.

⁴²The soldiers’ counsel was to kill the prisoners, so that none of them would swim out and escape.

⁴² در این موقع سربازان فكر می‌کردند بهتر است زندانیان را بكشند، مبادا كسی از ایشان به وسیلهٔ شنا فرار كند.

⁴³But the centurion, desiring to save Paul, stopped them from their purpose, and commanded that those who could swim should throw themselves overboard first to go toward the land;

⁴³ امّا سروان كه می‌خواست پولس را سالم به مقصد برساند، مانع انجام نقشهٔ آنان شد. او دستور داد اول کسانی‌که شنا بلد بودند، از كشتی به داخل آب بپرند و خود را به خشكی برسانند. و بقیّهٔ یا روی تخته پاره‌ها و یا روی قطعات كشتی به دنبال آنان بروند. به این ترتیب همهٔ ما صحیح و سالم به خشكی رسیدیم.

⁴⁴and the rest should follow, some on planks, and some on other things from the ship. So it happened that they all escaped safely to the land.

⁴⁴ و بقیّهٔ یا روی تخته پاره‌ها و یا روی قطعات كشتی به دنبال آنان بروند. به این ترتیب همهٔ ما صحیح و سالم به خشكی رسیدیم.
