¹The high priest said, “Are these things so?”

¹ آنگاه كاهن اعظم پرسید: «آیا اینها راست می‌گویند؟»

²He said, “Brothers and fathers, listen. The God of glory appeared to our father Abraham, when he was in Mesopotamia, before he lived in Haran,

² استیفان جواب داد: «ای برادران و ای پدران، توجّه بفرمایید، خدای پرجلال به پدر ما ابراهیم در وقتی‌که در بین‌النهرین سكونت داشت، یعنی قبل از مهاجرت به حرّان ظاهر شد

³and said to him, ‘Get out of your land, and from your relatives, and come into a land which I will show you.’ Genesis 12:1

³ و به او فرمود: 'وطن خود و بستگانت را ترک كن و به سرزمینی كه به تو نشان می‌دهم برو.'

⁴Then he came out of the land of the Chaldaeans, and lived in Haran. From there, when his father was dead, God moved him into this land, where you are now living.

⁴ پس به این ترتیب از زمین كلدانیان عزیمت كرد و مدّتی در حرّان ماند و پس از مرگ پدرش، خدا او را از آنجا به سرزمینی كه امروز شما در آن سكونت دارید منتقل ساخت.

⁵He gave him no inheritance in it, no, not so much as to set his foot on. He promised that he would give it to him for a possession, and to his seed after him, when he still had no child.

⁵ خدا حتّی یک وجب از آن سرزمین را به ابراهیم نداد. امّا در همان وقت كه او هنوز فرزندی نداشت به او قول داد، كه او و بعد از او فرزندانش را مالک آن زمین بگرداند.

⁶God spoke in this way: that his seed would live as aliens in a strange land, and that they would be enslaved and mistreated for four hundred years.

⁶ پس خدا به این طریق به ابراهیم فرمود كه فرزندان او مانند غریبه‌ها در یک سرزمین بیگانه زندگی خواهند كرد و مدّت چهارصد سال در بندگی و ظلم به سر خواهند برد.

⁷‘I will judge the nation to which they will be in bondage,’ said God, ‘and after that will they come out, and serve me in this place.’ Genesis 15:13-14

⁷ و خدا فرمود: 'امّا من آن ملّتی را كه قوم من بردگان آنها خواهند شد محکوم خواهم ساخت و بعد از آن آنان آزاد خواهند شد و مرا در همین مكان عبادت خواهند كرد.'

⁸He gave him the covenant of circumcision. So Abraham became the father of Isaac, and circumcised him the eighth day. Isaac became the father of Jacob, and Jacob became the father of the twelve patriarchs.

⁸ در همین زمان خدا ختنه را به عنوان نشانهٔ پیمان خود به ابراهیم عطا كرد و به این ترتیب پس از تولّد اسحاق او را در روز هشتم ختنه كرد و اسحاق، یعقوب را، و یعقوب، دوازده فرزند خود را كه بعدها هر كدام پدر یک طایفهٔ اسرائیل شدند.

⁹“The patriarchs, moved with jealousy against Joseph, sold him into Egypt. God was with him,

⁹ «فرزندان یعقوب از روی حسد یوسف را به بردگی در مصر فروختند، امّا خدا با او بود

¹⁰and delivered him out of all his afflictions, and gave him favor and wisdom before Pharaoh, king of Egypt. He made him governor over Egypt and all his house.

¹⁰ و او را از جمیع زحماتش رهانید و به او توفیق و حكمت عطا فرمود به طوری ‌كه مورد پسند فرعون، فرمانروای مصر واقع شد و یوسف فرمانروای سرزمین مصر و دربار سلطنتی گردید.

¹¹Now a famine came over all the land of Egypt and Canaan, and great affliction. Our fathers found no food.

¹¹ در این هنگام در سرتاسر مصر و كنعان قحطی‌ای پدید آمد كه باعث مصیبت عظیمی شد به حدّی كه اجداد ما چیزی برای خوردن نیافتند.

¹²But when Jacob heard that there was grain in Egypt, he sent out our fathers the first time.

¹² وقتی یعقوب باخبر شد كه در مصر غلّه پیدا می‌شود نیاکان ما را برای اولین بار به آنجا فرستاد.

¹³On the second time Joseph was made known to his brothers, and Joseph’s race was revealed to Pharaoh.

¹³ در سفر دوم یوسف خود را به برادرانش شناسانید و فرعون از اصل و نصب یوسف باخبر شد.

¹⁴Joseph sent, and summoned Jacob, his father, and all his relatives, seventy-five souls.

¹⁴ یوسف پدر خود یعقوب و تمام بستگانش را كه جمعاً هفتاد و پنج نفر بودند به مصر دعوت كرد

¹⁵Jacob went down into Egypt, and he died, himself and our fathers,

¹⁵ و به این ترتیب یعقوب به مصر قدم نهاد. عمر یعقوب و اجداد ما در آنجا به سر رسید

¹⁶and they were brought back to Shechem, and laid in the tomb that Abraham bought for a price in silver from the children of Hamor of Shechem.

¹⁶ و اجساد آنان را به شكیم بردند و در آرامگاهی كه ابراهیم از فرزند حمور به مبلغی خریده بود به خاک سپردند.

¹⁷“But as the time of the promise came close which God had sworn to Abraham, the people grew and multiplied in Egypt,

¹⁷ «و چون وقت آن نزدیک می‌شد كه خدا به وعده‌ای كه به ابراهیم داده بود، عمل كند قوم ما در سرزمین مصر رشد كرد و تعداد آنان افزایش یافت.

¹⁸until there arose a different king, who didn’t know Joseph.

¹⁸ سرانجام پادشاه دیگری كه یوسف را نمی‌شناخت به پادشاهی مصر رسید

¹⁹The same took advantage of our race, and mistreated our fathers, and forced them to throw out their babies, so that they wouldn’t stay alive.

¹⁹ و با اجداد ما با نیرنگ رفتار كرد و بر آنان ظلم بسیار روا داشت به حدّی ‌كه ایشان را مجبور ساخت كه نوزادان خود را سر راه بگذارند تا بمیرند.

²⁰At that time Moses was born, and was exceedingly handsome. He was nourished three months in his father’s house.

²⁰ در چنین روزگاری موسی كه كودكی بسیار زیبا بود، به دنیا آمد. او مدّت سه ماه در خانهٔ پدر پرورش یافت

²¹When he was thrown out, Pharaoh’s daughter took him up, and reared him as her own son.

²¹ و وقتی او را سر راه گذاشتند، دختر فرعون او را برداشت و همچون فرزند خود تربیت نمود.

²²Moses was instructed in all the wisdom of the Egyptians. He was mighty in his words and works.

²² به این ترتیب موسی بر تمام فرهنگ و معارف مصر تسلّط یافت و در گفتار و كردار استعداد مخصوصی از خود نشان داد.

²³But when he was forty years old, it came into his heart to visit his brothers The word for “brothers” here and where the context allows may be also correctly translated “brothers and sisters” or “siblings.” , the children of Israel.

²³ «همین‌كه موسی چهل ساله شد به فكرش رسید كه به دیدن برادران اسرائیلی خود برود

²⁴Seeing one of them suffer wrong, he defended him, and avenged him who was oppressed, striking the Egyptian.

²⁴ و چون دید كه مردی مصری با یكی از آنان بدرفتاری می‌کرد، به حمایت آن اسرائیلی برخاست و آن تجاوزكار مصری را به سزای عمل خود رسانید و او را كشت.

²⁵He supposed that his brothers understood that God, by his hand, was giving them deliverance; but they didn’t understand.

²⁵ موسی گمان می‌کرد كه هم نژادانش خواهند فهمید كه خدا او را وسیلهٔ نجات آنان قرار داده است، امّا آنان نفهمیدند.

²⁶“The day following, he appeared to them as they fought, and urged them to be at peace again, saying, ‘Sirs, you are brothers. Why do you wrong one another?’

²⁶ فردای آن روز به دو نفر اسرائیلی كه با هم نزاع می‌کردند رسید و برای رفع اختلافشان چنین گفت: 'ای دوستان، شما برادرید. چرا با هم بدرفتاری می‌کنید؟'

²⁷But he who did his neighbor wrong pushed him away, saying, ‘Who made you a ruler and a judge over us?

²⁷ مرد مقصّر او را عقب زد و گفت 'چه كسی تو را حاكم و قاضی ما كرده است؟

²⁸Do you want to kill me, as you killed the Egyptian yesterday?’ Exodus 2:14

²⁸ می‌خواهی مرا هم مثل آن مصری كه دیروز كشتی، بكشی؟'

²⁹Moses fled at this saying, and became a stranger in the land of Midian, where he became the father of two sons.

²⁹ موسی وقتی این جواب را شنید از آن سرزمین گریخت و در سرزمین مدیان آواره گشت و در آنجا صاحب دو پسر شد.

³⁰“When forty years were fulfilled, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in the wilderness of Mount Sinai, in a flame of fire in a bush.

³⁰ «پس از آنكه چهل سال سپری شد، فرشته‌ای در بیابانهای اطراف كوه سینا در بوته‌ای سوزان به موسی ظاهر شد.

³¹When Moses saw it, he wondered at the sight. As he came close to see, a voice of the Lord came to him,

³¹ موسی از دیدن آن رؤیا غرق حیرت گشت و هنگامی‌كه نزدیک آمد تا بهتر ببیند، صدای خداوند به گوشش رسید كه می‌گفت:

³²‘I am the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.’ Exodus 3:6 Moses trembled, and dared not look.

³² 'من خدای نیاکان تو، خدای ابراهیم و اسحاق و یعقوب هستم.' موسی ترسید و جرأت نگاه كردن نداشت.

³³The Lord said to him, ‘Take your sandals off of your feet, for the place where you stand is holy ground.

³³ سپس خداوند فرمود: 'نعلین‌ات را بیرون بیاور چون در مكان مقدّسی ایستاده‌ای.

³⁴I have surely seen the affliction of my people that is in Egypt, and have heard their groaning. I have come down to deliver them. Now come, I will send you into Egypt.’ Exodus 3:5,7-8,10

³⁴ البتّه آن ظلمی را كه در مصر نسبت به قوم من می‌شود دیده و آه و ناله‌هایشان را شنیده‌ام و برای نجات آنان آمده‌ام، برخیز تو را به مصر می‌فرستم.'

³⁵“This Moses, whom they refused, saying, ‘Who made you a ruler and a judge?’—God has sent him as both a ruler and a deliverer by the hand of the angel who appeared to him in the bush.

³⁵ «آری همان موسی را كه آنان رد كرده و به او گفته بودند: 'چه كسی تو را حاكم و قاضی ما كرده است؟' خدا به وسیلهٔ فرشته‌ای كه در بوته به او ظاهر شد حكمران و رهاننده گردانید.

³⁶This man led them out, having worked wonders and signs in Egypt, in the Red Sea, and in the wilderness for forty years.

³⁶ این موسی بود كه با انجام نشانه‌ها و عجایب در مصر و در راه دریای سرخ، بنی‌اسرائیل را به خارج از مصر هدایت كرد و مدّت چهل سال در بیابان عهده‌دار رهبری آنان بود.

³⁷This is that Moses, who said to the children of Israel, ‘The Lord our God will raise up a prophet for you from among your brothers, like me. TR adds “You shall listen to him.” ’ Deuteronomy 18:15

³⁷ باز هم موسی بود كه به بنی‌اسرائیل فرمود: 'خدا از بین شما نبی‌ای مانند من برایتان برمی‌انگیزد.'

³⁸This is he who was in the assembly in the wilderness with the angel that spoke to him on Mount Sinai, and with our fathers, who received living oracles to give to us,

³⁸ و او بود كه در اجتماع بنی‌اسرائیل در بیابان حضور داشت و با فرشته در كوه سینا و با اجداد ما گفت‌وگو كرد و پیام زندهٔ الهی را دریافت نمود تا آن را به ما نیز برساند.

³⁹to whom our fathers wouldn’t be obedient, but rejected him, and turned back in their hearts to Egypt,

³⁹ «امّا نیاکان ما رهبری او را نپذیرفتند و دست رد بر سینه‌اش زدند و آرزو داشتند به مصر برگردند

⁴⁰saying to Aaron, ‘Make us gods that will go before us, for as for this Moses, who led us out of the land of Egypt, we don’t know what has become of him.’ Exodus 32:1

⁴⁰ و از هارون خواستند برای ایشان خدایانی بسازد كه پیشاپیش آنان بروند و گفتند: 'ما نمی‌دانیم بر سر آن موسایی كه ما را از مصر بیرون آورد چه آمده است.'

⁴¹They made a calf in those days, and brought a sacrifice to the idol, and rejoiced in the works of their hands.

⁴¹ و در آن روزها گوساله‌ای ساختند و در برابر آن بت، قربانی‌های بسیار گذراندند و به افتخار ساخته و پرداختهٔ دست خود جشنی برپا نمودند،

⁴²But God turned, and gave them up to serve the army of the sky, This idiom could also be translated “host of heaven,” or “angelic beings,” or “heavenly bodies.” as it is written in the book of the prophets, ‘Did you offer to me slain animals and sacrifices forty years in the wilderness, O house of Israel?

⁴² لیكن خدا از آنان روی گردان شد و ایشان را به پرستش ستارگان آسمانی واگذاشت. همان‌طور كه در كتاب انبیا مكتوب است: 'ای قوم اسرائیل آیا طی این چهل سال برای من در بیابان قربانی كرده‌اید یا هدیه‌ای تقدیم داشته‌اید؟

⁴³You took up the tabernacle of Moloch, the star of your god Rephan, the figures which you made to worship. I will carry you away Amos 5:25-27 beyond Babylon.’

⁴³ خیر، بلكه شما خیمهٔ مولک و پیكرهٔ خدای ستارهٔ خود رمفان را با خود حمل می‌كردید، آنها بُتهایی بودند كه برای پرستش ساخته بودید پس شما را به آن‌سوی بابل تبعید خواهم كرد.'

⁴⁴“Our fathers had the tabernacle of the testimony in the wilderness, even as he who spoke to Moses commanded him to make it according to the pattern that he had seen;

⁴⁴ «اجداد ما در بیابان خیمهٔ مقدّس داشتند و این خیمه همان چیزی است كه خدا به موسی دستور داد كه طبق آن نمونه‌ای كه قبلاً دیده بود بسازد.

⁴⁵which also our fathers, in their turn, brought in with Joshua when they entered into the possession of the nations, whom God drove out before the face of our fathers, to the days of David,

⁴⁵ نیاکان ما در نسل بعد در آن وقت كه زمین كنعان را به تصرّف درآورده بودند، یعنی وقتی خدا اقوام دیگر را از سر راهشان برمی‌داشت، آن خیمه را به همراهی یوشع با خود آوردند و تا زمان داوود آن خیمه در آنجا ماند.

⁴⁶who found favor in the sight of God, and asked to find a habitation for the God of Jacob.

⁴⁶ داوود مورد لطف خدا واقع شد و تقاضا نمود كه به او اجازه داده شود مسكنی برای خدای یعقوب بنا نماید.

⁴⁷But Solomon built him a house.

⁴⁷ ولی این سلیمان بود كه خانه‌ای برای خدا ساخت.

⁴⁸However, the Most High doesn’t dwell in temples made with hands, as the prophet says,

⁴⁸ «امّا خدای متعال در مسكن‌های ساختهٔ دست بشر ساكن نمی‌شود. چنانکه نبی فرموده است:

⁴⁹‘heaven is my throne, and the earth a footstool for my feet. What kind of house will you build me?’ says the Lord; ‘or what is the place of my rest?

⁴⁹ 'آسمان تخت من و زمین پای‌انداز من است. برای من چه خانه‌ای خواهید ساخت؟

⁵⁰Didn’t my hand make all these things?’ Isaiah 66:1-2

⁵⁰ استراحتگاه من كجاست؟ آیا دست خود من جمیع این چیزها را نساخته است؟'

⁵¹“You stiff-necked and uncircumcised in heart and ears, you always resist the Holy Spirit! As your fathers did, so you do.

⁵¹ «ای‌ گردنكشان كه از دل و گوش كافرید و گوشهایتان كر است. شما هم مثل اجداد خود همیشه به ضد روح‌القدس مقاومت می‌كنید.

⁵²Which of the prophets didn’t your fathers persecute? They killed those who foretold the coming of the Righteous One, of whom you have now become betrayers and murderers.

⁵² كدام نبی‌ای از دست اجداد شما جفا ندید؟ آنان كسانی را كه دربارهٔ آمدن آن یكتای عادل پیشگویی می‌کردند كشتند، و در زمان ما، شما به خود او خیانت كردید و او را به قتل رساندید.

⁵³You received the law as it was ordained by angels, and didn’t keep it!”

⁵³ آری شما شریعت را كه توسط فرشتگان به شما رسید قبول كردید امّا از اطاعت آن سر باز زدید.»

⁵⁴Now when they heard these things, they were cut to the heart, and they gnashed at him with their teeth.

⁵⁴ اعضای شورا از شنیدن این سخنان چنان به خشم آمدند كه دندانهای خود را به هم می‌ساییدند.

⁵⁵But he, being full of the Holy Spirit, looked up steadfastly into heaven, and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing on the right hand of God,

⁵⁵ امّا استیفان پر از روح‌القدس، به آسمان چشم دوخت و جلال خدا و عیسی را كه در دست راست خدا ایستاده بود

⁵⁶and said, “Behold, I see the heavens opened, and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God!”

⁵⁶ دید و گفت: «ببینید من هم اكنون آسمان را گشوده و پسر انسان را در دست راست خدا ایستاده می‌بینم.»

⁵⁷But they cried out with a loud voice, and stopped their ears, and rushed at him with one accord.

⁵⁷ در این هنگام فریاد بلندی از حاضران برخاست. آنها گوشهای خود را گرفتند و به سوی او حمله كردند،

⁵⁸They threw him out of the city, and stoned him. The witnesses placed their garments at the feet of a young man named Saul.

⁵⁸ او را از شهر بیرون انداخته سنگسار نمودند. کسانی‌که علیه او شهادت داده بودند، لباسهای خود را كندند و پیش پای جوانی به نام شائول گذاشتند.

⁵⁹They stoned Stephen as he called out, saying, “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit!”

⁵⁹ وقتی استیفان را سنگسار می‌کردند او با فریاد گفت: «ای عیسی، ای خداوند روح مرا بپذیر.» سپس به زانو افتاد و با صدای بلند گفت: «خداوندا، این گناه را به حساب ایشان نگذار.» این را گفت و جان سپرد.

⁶⁰He kneeled down, and cried with a loud voice, “Lord, don’t hold this sin against them!” When he had said this, he fell asleep.

⁶⁰ سپس به زانو افتاد و با صدای بلند گفت: «خداوندا، این گناه را به حساب ایشان نگذار.» این را گفت و جان سپرد.
