¹Now Jethro, the priest of Midian, Moses’ father-in-law, heard of all that God had done for Moses, and for Israel his people, how that Yahweh had brought Israel out of Egypt.

¹ یترون، پدر زن موسی که کاهن مدیان بود، آنچه را که خدا برای موسی و قوم اسرائیل انجام داده و آنها را از سرزمین مصر بیرون آورده بود شنید.

²Jethro, Moses’ father-in-law, received Zipporah, Moses’ wife, after he had sent her away,

² پس یترون، صفوره، زن موسی که او را نزد پدرش به خانه فرستاده بود، و دو پسرش یعنی جرشوم و الیعزر را برداشت و به نزد موسی آمد. (موسی گفته ‌بود که «من در سرزمین بیگانه، غریب هستم.» پس اسم پسر خود را جرشوم گذاشت.

³and her two sons. The name of one son was Gershom, “Gershom” sounds like the Hebrew for “an alien there.” for Moses said, “I have lived as a foreigner in a foreign land”.

³ بعد از آن گفته‌ بود: «خدای پدرم به من کمک کرد و نگذاشت به دست فرعون کشته شوم.» بنابراین اسم پسر دوم خود را الیعزر گذاشت.)

⁴The name of the other was Eliezer, Eliezer means “God is my helper.” for he said, “My father’s God was my help and delivered me from Pharaoh’s sword.”

⁴ یترون با زن موسی و دو پسر او به بیابانی آمد که موسی در آنجا در کوه مقدّس خیمه زده بود.

⁵Jethro, Moses’ father-in-law, came with his sons and his wife to Moses into the wilderness where he was encamped, at the Mountain of God.

⁵ یترون برای موسی پیغام فرستاد که ما به نزد تو می‌آییم.

⁶He said to Moses, “I, your father-in-law Jethro, have come to you with your wife, and her two sons with her.”

⁶ موسی به استقبال او رفت و در مقابل او تعظیم کرد و او را بوسید. آنها بعد از احوالپرسی به خیمهٔ موسی رفتند.

⁷Moses went out to meet his father-in-law, and bowed and kissed him. They asked each other of their welfare, and they came into the tent.

⁷ موسی برای یترون تعریف کرد که خدا برای نجات بنی‌اسرائیل چه به سر فرعون و اهالی مصر آورد. همچنین تعریف کرد که چطور آنها در بین راه در سختی و زحمت بودند و خداوند چگونه آنها را نجات داده است.

⁸Moses told his father-in-law all that Yahweh had done to Pharaoh and to the Egyptians for Israel’s sake, all the hardships that had come on them on the way, and how Yahweh delivered them.

⁸ یترون وقتی ماجرا را شنید خوشحال شد

⁹Jethro rejoiced for all the goodness which Yahweh had done to Israel, in that he had delivered them out of the hand of the Egyptians.

⁹ و گفت: «سپاس بر خداوندی که شما را از دست فرعون و مردم مصر نجات داد. شکر بر خداوندی که قوم خود را از بردگی آزاد کرد.

¹⁰Jethro said, “Blessed be Yahweh, who has delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians, and out of the hand of Pharaoh; who has delivered the people from under the hand of the Egyptians.

¹⁰ حالا می‌دانم که خداوند از همهٔ خدایان بزرگتر است زیرا خداوند این کار را هنگامی انجام داد که مصریان با بنی‌اسرائیل با ظلم و ستم رفتار می‌کردند.»

¹¹Now I know that Yahweh is greater than all gods because of the thing in which they dealt arrogantly against them.”

¹¹ آنگاه یترون قربانی سوختنی آورد تا سوخته شود و نیز قربانی‌های دیگر تا به خداوند تقدیم کند. بعد از آن هارون و تمام رهبران اسرائیل آمدند تا به اتّفاق یترون پدر زن موسی در حضور خداوند با هم غذا بخورند.

¹²Jethro, Moses’ father-in-law, took a burnt offering and sacrifices for God. Aaron came with all of the elders of Israel, to eat bread with Moses’ father-in-law before God.

¹² روز بعد موسی برای رسیدگی به شکایات مردم در بین آنها حاضر شد و از صبح تا شب مشغول بود.

¹³It happened on the next day, that Moses sat to judge the people, and the people stood around Moses from the morning to the evening.

¹³ وقتی یترون تمام کارهایی را که موسی انجام می‌داد دید، از موسی پرسید: «این چه‌کاری است که تو برای مردم انجام می‌دهی؟ چرا همهٔ این‌کارها را به تنهایی انجام می‌دهی و مردم از صبح تا شب اینجا منتظر می‌ایستند تا با تو مشورت کنند؟»

¹⁴When Moses’ father-in-law saw all that he did to the people, he said, “What is this thing that you do for the people? Why do you sit alone, and all the people stand around you from morning to evening?”

¹⁴ موسی در جواب گفت: «من باید این کار را انجام دهم، چون مردم پیش من می‌آیند تا بدانند ارادهٔ خدا چیست.

¹⁵Moses said to his father-in-law, “Because the people come to me to inquire of God.

¹⁵ هرگاه دو نفر با هم اختلاف داشته ‌باشند پیش من می‌آیند و من تشخیص می‌دهم حق با چه کسی است و قوانین و دستورات خدا را برای آنها شرح می‌دهم.»

¹⁶When they have a matter, they come to me, and I judge between a man and his neighbor, and I make them know the statutes of God, and his laws.”

¹⁶ یترون گفت: «تو کار درستی نمی‌کنی!

¹⁷Moses’ father-in-law said to him, “The thing that you do is not good.

¹⁷ تو با این کار هم خودت و هم مردم را خسته می‌کنی. چون این کار به تنهایی برای تو خیلی دشوار است.

¹⁸You will surely wear away, both you, and this people that is with you; for the thing is too heavy for you. You are not able to perform it yourself alone.

¹⁸ حالا من به تو نصیحت خوبی می‌کنم و خدا با تو خواهد بود. این درست است که تو قوم را به حضور خدا ببری و اختلافات آنها را به خدا عرض کنی.

¹⁹Listen now to my voice. I will give you counsel, and God be with you. You represent the people before God, and bring the causes to God.

¹⁹ تو باید اوامر خدا را به آنها تعلیم دهی و برای آنها شرح دهی که زندگی و رفتار آنها چگونه باشد.

²⁰You shall teach them the statutes and the laws, and shall show them the way in which they must walk, and the work that they must do.

²⁰ امّا علاوه بر این تو باید مردان قابل و کاردان که خدا ترس و امین باشند و رشوه نگیرند از میان مردم انتخاب کنی تا رهبر گروههای هزار نفری، صد نفری، پنجاه نفری و ده نفری باشند.

²¹Moreover you shall provide out of all the people able men, such as fear God: men of truth, hating unjust gain; and place such over them, to be rulers of thousands, rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens.

²¹ آنها همیشه بین مردم داوری کنند. آنها می‌توانند تمام کارهای مشکل را نزد تو بیاورند ولی کارهای کوچک را خودشان حل و فصل کنند. آنها با این کار به تو کمک می‌کنند و بار تو سبک‌تر و کار تو راحت‌تر می‌شود.

²²Let them judge the people at all times. It shall be that every great matter they shall bring to you, but every small matter they shall judge themselves. So shall it be easier for you, and they shall share the load with you.

²² اگر این کار را طبق خواست خدا انجام دهی، هم خودت را زیاد خسته نمی‌کنی و هم مردم اختلافاتشان زودتر حل شده و به سر کار خود می‌روند.»

²³If you will do this thing, and God commands you so, then you will be able to endure, and all of these people also will go to their place in peace.”

²³ موسی نصیحت پدر زن خود یترون را قبول کرد

²⁴So Moses listened to the voice of his father-in-law, and did all that he had said.

²⁴ و مردان قابلی از بین تمام بنی‌اسرائیل انتخاب و آنها را به رهبری گروههای هزار نفری، صد نفری، پنجاه نفری و ده نفری منصوب کرد.

²⁵Moses chose able men out of all Israel, and made them heads over the people, rulers of thousands, rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens.

²⁵ آنها همیشه بین مردم داوری کرده و کارهای مشکل را نزد موسی می‌آوردند. ولی کارهای کوچک‌تر را خودشان حل و فصل می‌کردند. پس از آن موسی با پدر زن خود، یترون خداحافظی کرد و یترون به خانهٔ خود برگشت.

²⁶They judged the people at all times. They brought the hard causes to Moses, but every small matter they judged themselves.

²⁶ پس از آن موسی با پدر زن خود، یترون خداحافظی کرد و یترون به خانهٔ خود برگشت.

²⁷Moses let his father-in-law depart, and he went his way into his own land.
