¹Now when these things were done, the princes drew near to me, saying, “The people of Israel, and the priests and the Levites, have not separated themselves from the peoples of the lands, following their abominations, even those of the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Jebusites, the Ammonites, the Moabites, the Egyptians, and the Amorites.

¹ بعد از آن، رهبران قوم یهود آمده به من گفتند که مردم، کاهنان و لاویان، خود را از اقوام همسایه یعنی مردم عمون، موآب و مصر و همچنان از کنعانیان، حِتّیان، فرزیان، و یبوسیان و اموریان جدا نگاه نداشته‌اند. آنها کارهای ناشایست این مردمان را انجام می‌دادند.

²For they have taken of their daughters for themselves and for their sons, so that the holy seed have mixed themselves with the peoples of the lands. Yes, the hand of the princes and rulers has been chief in this trespass.”

² مردان یهودی با زنان بیگانه ازدواج می‌کردند و در نتیجه قوم مقدّس خدا آلوده شده بودند. رهبران و بزرگان قوم بیش از همه در این امر مقصّر بودند.

³When I heard this thing, I tore my garment and my robe, and plucked off the hair of my head and of my beard, and sat down confounded.

³ وقتی این را شنیدم، از شدّت غم لباس خود را دریدم، موهای سر و صورتم را ‌کندم و از شدّت غم و ناراحتی بر زمین نشستم.

⁴Then were assembled to me everyone who trembled at the words of the God of Israel, because of their trespass of the captivity; and I sat confounded until the evening offering.

⁴ تا وقت تقدیم قربانی شامگاه همان‌طور در آنجا در حالت اندوه و ماتم بودم. مردم به تدریج اطراف من جمع شدند، مخصوصاً کسانی‌که از آنچه خدای اسرائیل در مورد بی‌وفایی تبعیدیان بازگشته گفته بود، ترسیده بودند.

⁵At the evening offering I arose up from my humiliation, even with my garment and my robe torn; and I fell on my knees, and spread out my hands to Yahweh my God;

⁵ هنگام قربانی شامگاه درحالی‌که هنوز لباس پاره شده بر تنم بود، از جایی که به حالت غم و اندوه نشسته‌ بودم، برخاستم. به حالت دعا زانو زدم و دستهای خود را به سوی خداوند، خدای خود بلند کردم،

⁶and I said, “My God, I am ashamed and blush to lift up my face to you, my God; for our iniquities have increased over our head, and our guiltiness has grown up to the heavens.

⁶ و گفتم: «ای خدا، آن‌قدر شرمگین هستم که نمی‌توانم سر خود را در حضور تو بلند کنم. گناهان ما انباشته شده و از سر ما نیز گذشته‌ است و به آسمانها می‌رسد.

⁷Since the days of our fathers we have been exceeding guilty to this day; and for our iniquities we, our kings, and our priests, have been delivered into the hand of the kings of the lands, to the sword, to captivity, to plunder, and to confusion of face, as it is this day.

⁷ از روزگار اجدادمان تا به امروز ما، قوم تو، گناهان فراوانی را مرتکب شده‌‌‌ایم. به‌خاطر گناهانمان، ما، پادشاهان و کاهنان ما به دست پادشاهان بیگانه افتاده‌ایم. ما کشتار، غارت و اسیر شده‌ و کاملاً رسوا شده‌ایم چنانکه تا به امروز هستیم.

⁸Now for a little moment grace has been shown from Yahweh our God, to leave us a remnant to escape, and to give us a nail in his holy place, that our God may lighten our eyes, and give us a little reviving in our bondage.

⁸ ای خداوند خدای ما، اکنون مدّت کوتاهی است که به ما لطف کرده‌ای و اجازه داده‌ای که عدّه‌‌ای از ما از اسارت خلاص شویم و در این مکان مقدّس در امنیّت زندگی کنیم تا چشمانمان روشن گردند و در بردگی نیروی تازه کسب کنیم.

⁹For we are bondservants; yet our God has not forsaken us in our bondage, but has extended loving kindness to us in the sight of the kings of Persia, to give us a reviving, to set up the house of our God, and to repair its ruins, and to give us a wall in Judah and in Jerusalem.

⁹ هر چند ما برده هستیم، ولی تو ما را در حالت بردگی ترک نمی‌کنی، تو شاهنشاهان پارس را واداشتی تا بر ما لطف کنند و به ما اجازه دهند به زندگی خود ادامه دهیم و معبد بزرگ تو را که ویران شده بود، دوباره بسازیم و در اینجا، در یهودیه و اورشلیم، ایمن باشیم.

¹⁰“Now, our God, what shall we say after this? For we have forsaken your commandments,

¹⁰ «امّا بعد از این‌همه وقایع، دیگر چه می‌توانیم بگوییم؟ ما باز هم از فرامین تو ای خدا،

¹¹which you have commanded by your servants the prophets, saying, ‘The land, to which you go to possess it, is an unclean land through the uncleanness of the peoples of the lands, through their abominations, which have filled it from one end to another with their filthiness.

¹¹ که به وسیلهٔ خادمان خود انبیا به ما داده‌‌ای، سرکشی کرده‌ایم. آنها به ما گفتند که این سرزمین که ما تصرّف خواهیم کرد، به وسیلهٔ کارهای ناشایست و زشت مردمی که در سرتاسر آن سکونت دارند ناپاک شده است.

¹²Now therefore don’t give your daughters to their sons, neither take their daughters to your sons, nor seek their peace or their prosperity forever; that you may be strong, and eat the good of the land, and leave it for an inheritance to your children forever.’

¹² آنها به ما گفتند، اگر می‌خواهیم از این سرزمین بهره‌مند شویم و آن را تا ابد به فرزندان خود واگذار کنیم، هرگز نباید با این مردم ازدواج کنیم یا کاری کنیم که باعث موفقیّت و سعادت آنها شود.

¹³“After all that has come on us for our evil deeds, and for our great guilt, since you, our God, have punished us less than our iniquities deserve, and have given us such a remnant,

¹³ حتّی بعد از آن‌همه مجازات و سختی که به‌خاطر گناهان و خطاهای خود متحمّل شده‌‌‌ایم، ما می‌دانیم که تو خدای ما، ما را کمتر از آن چه سزاوار بودیم تنبیه کرده‌ای و به ما اجازه دادی تا زنده بمانیم.

¹⁴shall we again break your commandments, and join in affinity with the peoples that do these abominations? Wouldn’t you be angry with us until you had consumed us, so that there should be no remnant, nor any to escape?

¹⁴ پس چگونه ممکن است بازهم فرامین تو را نادیده بگیریم و با این مردمان شریر ازدواج کنیم؟ اگر چنین کنیم تو آنچنان خشمگین خواهی شد که ما را بکلّی از بین خواهی برد و دیگر اجازه نخواهی داد که زنده بمانیم؟ ای خداوند، خدای اسرائیل، تو عادلی، امّا باز هم اجازه داده‌‌ای عدّه‌ای از ما زنده بمانیم. ما به گناهان خود در حضور تو اعتراف می‌کنیم؛ ما هیچ شایستگی برای آمدن به حضور تو نداریم.»

¹⁵Yahweh, the God of Israel, you are righteous; for we are left a remnant that has escaped, as it is this day. Behold, we are before you in our guiltiness; for none can stand before you because of this.”

¹⁵ ای خداوند، خدای اسرائیل، تو عادلی، امّا باز هم اجازه داده‌‌ای عدّه‌ای از ما زنده بمانیم. ما به گناهان خود در حضور تو اعتراف می‌کنیم؛ ما هیچ شایستگی برای آمدن به حضور تو نداریم.»
