¹The word which came to Jeremiah from Yahweh, saying,

¹ خداوند به من گفت:

²Arise, and go down to the potter’s house, and there I will cause you to hear my words.

² «به کارگاه کوزه‌گر برو. در‌ آنجا به تو پیامی خواهم داد.»

³Then I went down to the potter’s house, and behold, he was making a work on the wheels.

³ پس من به آنجا رفتم کوزه‌گری را دیدم که بر روی چرخش مشغول کار بود

⁴When the vessel that he made of the clay was marred in the hand of the potter, he made it again another vessel, as seemed good to the potter to make it.

⁴ هرگاه ظرفی مطابق میلش نبود، گِل را می‌گرفت و با آن ظرف دیگری می‌ساخت.

⁵Then the word of Yahweh came to me, saying,

⁵ خداوند به من گفت:

⁶House of Israel, can’t I do with you as this potter? says Yahweh. Behold, as the clay in the potter’s hand, so are you in my hand, house of Israel.

⁶ «آیا من حقّ ندارم همان کاری را که کوزه‌گر با گِل می‌کند با شما قوم اسرائیل بکنم؟ شما در دست من مثل گِل در دست کوزه‌گر هستید.

⁷At what instant I shall speak concerning a nation, and concerning a kingdom, to pluck up and to break down and to destroy it;

⁷ هرگاه بگویم که می‌خواهم ملّتی یا مملکتی را از ریشه برکَنم یا خورد کنم،

⁸if that nation, concerning which I have spoken, turn from their evil, I will repent of the evil that I thought to do to them.

⁸ امّا اگر آن ملّت از شرارت خود دست بردارند من از مجازات آنها صرف‌نظر خواهم کرد.

⁹At what instant I shall speak concerning a nation, and concerning a kingdom, to build and to plant it;

⁹ به همان نحو اگر بگویم که من ملّتی یا مملکتی را به وجود می‌آورم و تقویت می‌کنم،

¹⁰if they do that which is evil in my sight, that they not obey my voice, then I will repent of the good, with which I said I would benefit them.

¹⁰ امّا اگر آن ملّت از اطاعت من سر باز زند و مرتکب شرارت شود، آنگاه از آنچه می‌خواستم بکنم، منصرف خواهم شد.

¹¹Now therefore, speak to the men of Judah, and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, saying, Thus says Yahweh: Behold, I frame evil against you, and devise a device against you: return you now everyone from his evil way, and amend your ways and your doings.

¹¹ پس، اکنون به مردم یهودا و اورشلیم بگو که من درصدد تنبیه آنها هستم. به آنها بگو از زندگی گناه‌آلود خود دست بردارند و راه و رفتار خود را عوض کنند.

¹²But they say, It is in vain; for we will walk after our own devices, and we will do everyone after the stubbornness of his evil heart.

¹² آنها در جواب خواهند گفت: 'نه، چرا چنین کنیم؟ ما همه به سرسختی و شرارت ادامه می‌دهیم.'»

¹³Therefore thus says Yahweh: Ask now among the nations, who has heard such things; the virgin of Israel has done a very horrible thing.

¹³ خداوند می‌گوید: «از تمام ملّتها بپرسید که آیا چنین چیزی قبلاً واقع شده است. قوم اسرائیل مرتکب کار وحشتناکی شده است.

¹⁴Shall the snow of Lebanon fail from the rock of the field? Shall the cold waters that flow down from afar be dried up?

¹⁴ آیا کوههای سنگی لبنان بی‌برف می‌ماند، و جویبارهای کوهستانی آن خشک می‌شوند؟

¹⁵For my people have forgotten me, they have burned incense to false gods; and they have been made to stumble in their ways, in the ancient paths, to walk in byways, in a way not built up;

¹⁵ با وجود این، قوم من مرا فراموش کرده و در حضور بُتها بُخور می‌سوزاند. از راهی که باید بروند منحرف شده‌اند. دیگر راههای قدیم را دنبال نمی‌کنند و در راههای نا‌آشنا حرکت می‌کنند.

¹⁶to make their land an astonishment, and a perpetual hissing; everyone who passes thereby shall be astonished, and shake his head.

¹⁶ آنها این سرزمین را به جایی وحشتناک و منفور مبدّل کرده‌اند. هرکس از آنجا می‌گذرد، از دیدن آن حیرت می‌کند و از روی تعجّب سر خود را تکان می‌دهد.

¹⁷I will scatter them as with an east wind before the enemy; I will show them the back, and not the face, in the day of their calamity.

¹⁷ من قوم خود را مثل گرد و خاکی که در برابر باد شرقی پراکنده می‌شود، در برابر دشمنانشان پراکنده خواهم کرد. من به آنها پشت خواهم نمود و در روز مصیبتشان به آنها کمک نخواهم کرد.»

¹⁸Then they said, Come, and let us devise devices against Jeremiah; for the law shall not perish from the priest, nor counsel from the wise, nor the word from the prophet. Come, and let us strike him with the tongue, and let us not give heed to any of his words.

¹⁸ آنگاه مردم گفتند: «بیایید همدست شویم و خود را از شرّ ارمیا خلاص کنیم! همیشه کاهنانی برای تعلیم، حکیمانی برای راهنمایی و انبیایی برای اعلام پیام خداوند وجود خواهد داشت. بیایید اتّهامی بر او وارد کنیم و دیگر به سخنانش گوش ندهیم.»

¹⁹Give heed to me, Yahweh, and listen to the voice of those who contend with me.

¹⁹ پس من دعا کردم و گفتم: «ای خداوند به آنچه می‌گویم گوش بده و آنچه را دشمنانم دربارهٔ من می‌گویند بشنو.

²⁰Shall evil be recompensed for good? for they have dug a pit for my soul. Remember how I stood before you to speak good for them, to turn away your wrath from them.

²⁰ آیا پاداش نیکویی، شرارت است؟ آری، آنها برای من چاهی کنده‌اند که من در آن بیفتم. به‌خاطر بیاور چگونه من به حضور تو آمدم و از جانب آنها سخن گفتم تا تو از روی خشم با آنها رفتار نکنی.

²¹Therefore deliver up their children to the famine, and give them over to the power of the sword; and let their wives become childless, and widows; and let their men be slain of death, and their young men struck of the sword in battle.

²¹ امّا اکنون ای خداوند، بگذار فرزندانشان از گرسنگی تلف شوند، و بگذار آنها همه در جنگ کشته شوند. باشد که زنانشان بیوه و بی‌فرزند، مردانشان با بیماری و کودکانشان در جنگ کشته شوند.

²²Let a cry be heard from their houses, when you shall bring a troop suddenly on them; for they have dug a pit to take me, and hid snares for my feet.

²² چپاولگران را به طور ناگهانی برای غارت آنها بفرست و بگذار از وحشت به گریه و زاری بیفتند. آنها در راهم چاهی کنده‌اند که در آن بیفتم و برایم دامی نهاده‌اند تا در آن گرفتار شوم. امّا ای خداوند، تو تمام توطئه‌های آنها را برای کشتن من می‌دانی. شرارت آنها را نبخش و از گناه آنها نگذر. در خشم خودت با آنها رفتار کن، آنها را بر زمین زده و درهم بشکن.»

²³Yet, Yahweh, you know all their counsel against me to kill me; don’t forgive their iniquity, neither blot out their sin from your sight; but let them be overthrown before you; deal you with them in the time of your anger.

²³ امّا ای خداوند، تو تمام توطئه‌های آنها را برای کشتن من می‌دانی. شرارت آنها را نبخش و از گناه آنها نگذر. در خشم خودت با آنها رفتار کن، آنها را بر زمین زده و درهم بشکن.»
