¹The angel of Yahweh came up from Gilgal to Bochim. He said, “I made you to go up out of Egypt, and have brought you to the land which I swore to your fathers; and I said, ‘I will never break my covenant with you:

¹ فرشتهٔ خداوند، از جلجال به بوکیم رفت و به قوم اسرائیل گفت: «من شما را از مصر به سرزمینی که وعدهٔ مالکیّت آن را به اجدادتان داده بودم، آوردم. به آنها گفتم: هرگز پیمانی را که با شما بسته‌ام، نخواهم شکست.

²and you shall make no covenant with the inhabitants of this land; you shall break down their altars.’ But you have not listened to my voice: why have you done this?

² شما هم نباید پیمانی با ساکنان این سرزمین ببندید. باید قربانگاههای آنها را ویران کنید. امّا شما فرمان مرا بجا نیاوردید. چرا این کار را کردید؟

³Therefore I also said, I will not drive them out from before you; but they shall be in your sides, and their gods shall be a snare to you.”

³ پس من هم، آن مردم را، از سر راهتان دور نمی‌کنم؛ بلکه آنها، خاری در پهلوی شما و خدایان آنها، دامی برای شما خواهند بود.»

⁴It happened, when the angel of Yahweh spoke these words to all the children of Israel, that the people lifted up their voice, and wept.

⁴ وقتی فرشتهٔ خداوند این سخنان را گفت، تمام مردم اسرائیل با صدای بلند، گریه کردند.

⁵They called the name of that place Bochim: and they sacrificed there to Yahweh.

⁵ پس آنجا را بوکیم نامیدند و به حضور خداوند قربانی کردند.

⁶Now when Joshua had sent the people away, the children of Israel went every man to his inheritance to possess the land.

⁶ یوشع مردم را مرّخص نمود و آنها به جاهایی که برایشان به عنوان ملکیّت تعیین شده بود، رفتند تا آنها را تصرّف کنند.

⁷The people served Yahweh all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders who outlived Joshua, who had seen all the great work of Yahweh that he had worked for Israel.

⁷ بنی‌اسرائیل در طول زندگانی یوشع و همچنین در زمان حیات رهبران قوم، که همهٔ کارهایی را که خداوند برای قوم اسرائیل کرده بود، با چشم خود دیده بودند، به خداوند وفادار ماندند.

⁸Joshua the son of Nun, the servant of Yahweh, died, being one hundred ten years old.

⁸ یوشع پسر نون، خدمتگزار خداوند در صد و ده سالگی وفات یافت.

⁹They buried him in the border of his inheritance in Timnath Heres, in the hill country of Ephraim, on the north of the mountain of Gaash.

⁹ او را در زمین خودش در تمنه حارس که در کوهستان افرایم، در شمال کوه جاعش بود دفن کردند.

¹⁰Also all that generation were gathered to their fathers: and there arose another generation after them, who didn’t know Yahweh, nor yet the work which he had worked for Israel.

¹⁰ پس از مدّتی، آن نسل از دنیا رفتند و نسل دیگری بعد از آنها به وجود آمدند. این نسل نه خداوند را می‌شناختند و نه کارهای او را که برای مردم اسرائیل انجام داده بود، دیده بودند.

¹¹The children of Israel did that which was evil in the sight of Yahweh, and served the Baals;

¹¹ بنی‌اسرائیل نسبت به خداوند شرارت ورزیدند و پرستش بت بعل را آغاز نمودند.

¹²and they forsook Yahweh, the God of their fathers, who brought them out of the land of Egypt, and followed other gods, of the gods of the peoples who were around them, and bowed themselves down to them: and they provoked Yahweh to anger.

¹² خداوند خدای اجداد خود را ترک کردند، همان خدایی که آنها را از مصر بیرون آورد. آنها خدایان مردمی را که در همسایگی‌شان زندگی می‌کردند پرستش نموده، در مقابل آنها سجده کردند و به این ترتیب، خداوند را به خشم آوردند.

¹³They forsook Yahweh, and served Baal and the Ashtaroth.

¹³ آنها خداوند را ترک کردند و بت بعل و اشتاروت را پرستش نمودند.

¹⁴The anger of Yahweh was kindled against Israel, and he delivered them into the hands of spoilers who despoiled them; and he sold them into the hands of their enemies all around, so that they could not any longer stand before their enemies.

¹⁴ پس خداوند بر اسرائیل خشمگین شد و آنها را به دست تاراجگران سپرد تا غارت شوند و اسیر دشمنان اطراف خود گردند تا دیگر نتوانند در مقابل دشمن مقاومت کنند.

¹⁵Wherever they went out, the hand of Yahweh was against them for evil, as Yahweh had spoken, and as Yahweh had sworn to them: and they were very distressed.

¹⁵ هر جایی که برای جنگ می‌رفتند، دست خداوند برضد ایشان بود و مانع پیروزی آنها می‌گردید، زیرا خداوند از پیش به آنها گفته و قسم خورده بود که این کار را می‌کند.

¹⁶Yahweh raised up judges, who saved them out of the hand of those who despoiled them.

¹⁶ امّا وقتی خداوند وضع رنج‌آور آنها را دید، رهبرانی برای ایشان تعیین کرد تا آنها را از دست تاراجگران، نجات بدهند.

¹⁷Yet they didn’t listen to their judges; for they played the prostitute after other gods, and bowed themselves down to them: they turned aside quickly out of the way in which their fathers walked, obeying the commandments of Yahweh. They didn’t do so.

¹⁷ امّا بنی‌اسرائیل از این رهبران اطاعت نکردند. آنها خداوند را ترک نموده، بُتها را پرستش نمودند. اجداد آنها از فرمانهای خدا اطاعت می‌کردند، امّا این نسل جدید خیلی زود از انجام آن باز ایستادند.

¹⁸When Yahweh raised them up judges, then Yahweh was with the judge, and saved them out of the hand of their enemies all the days of the judge: for it grieved Yahweh because of their groaning by reason of those who oppressed them and troubled them.

¹⁸ هر زمان که خداوند رهبری را برای بنی‌اسرائیل تعیین می‌کرد، او را کمک می‌نمود و تا زمانی که آن رهبر زنده بود، مردم را از دست دشمنانشان می‌رهانید. خداوند بر آنها رحمت می‌نمود، زیرا آنها به دلیل رنج و مرارت و ظلمی که می‌دیدند، ناله می‌کردند.

¹⁹But it happened, when the judge was dead, that they turned back, and dealt more corruptly than their fathers, in following other gods to serve them, and to bow down to them; they didn’t cease from their doings, nor from their stubborn way.

¹⁹ امّا بعد از آن که آن رهبر فوت می‌کرد، آنها به راههای شرارت‌آمیز خود بازمی‌گشتند و بدتر از اجداد خود عمل می‌کردند. بُتها را پرستش می‌نمودند و در مقابل آنها سجده می‌کردند و به کارهای شرارت‌بار خود ادامه می‌دادند.

²⁰The anger of Yahweh was kindled against Israel; and he said, “Because this nation have transgressed my covenant which I commanded their fathers, and have not listened to my voice;

²⁰ پس آتش خشم خداوند دوباره شعله‌ور می‌شد و می‌گفت: «چون مردم پیمانی را که با اجدادشان بسته بودم، شکستند و از احکام من پیروی نکردند،

²¹I also will not henceforth drive out any from before them of the nations that Joshua left when he died;

²¹ من هم آن اقوامی را که بعد از وفات یوشع باقی ماندند، بیرون نمی‌رانم.

²²that by them I may prove Israel, whether they will keep the way of Yahweh to walk therein, as their fathers kept it, or not.”

²² من آنها را وسیله‌ای برای آزمایش مردم اسرائیل می‌گردانم تا ببینم که آیا مانند اجداد خود، به راه راست می‌روند یا نه.» پس خداوند آن اقوام را در آن سرزمین باقی گذاشت و آنها را بیرون نکرد و به دست یوشع تسلیم ننمود و بعد از مرگ یوشع نیز آنها را فوراً بیرون نکرد.

²³So Yahweh left those nations, without driving them out hastily; neither delivered he them into the hand of Joshua.

²³ پس خداوند آن اقوام را در آن سرزمین باقی گذاشت و آنها را بیرون نکرد و به دست یوشع تسلیم ننمود و بعد از مرگ یوشع نیز آنها را فوراً بیرون نکرد.
