¹The children of Israel did that which was evil in the sight of Yahweh: and Yahweh delivered them into the hand of Midian seven years.

¹ مردم اسرائیل بار دیگر در نظر خداوند گناه کردند و خداوند اجازه داد تا مدیانیان هفت سال، بر آنها حکومت کنند.

²The hand of Midian prevailed against Israel; and because of Midian the children of Israel made them the dens which are in the mountains, and the caves, and the strongholds.

² مدیانیان چنان بر قوم اسرائیل ظلم می‌کردند که اسرائلیان، خود را از ترس آنها در غارها و کوهستان‌ها پنهان می‌کردند.

³So it was, when Israel had sown, that the Midianites came up, and the Amalekites, and the children of the east; they came up against them;

³ هر وقت که مردم اسرائیل کشت و زرع می‌کردند، مدیانیان به همراه عمالیقیان و قبایل بیابانی بر آنها هجوم می‌آوردند.

⁴and they encamped against them, and destroyed the increase of the earth, until you come to Gaza, and left no sustenance in Israel, neither sheep, nor ox, nor donkey.

⁴ در آنجا اردو می‌زدند و کشت و زرع آنها را، تا شهر غزه باقی نمی‌گذاشتند و همه‌چیز را، از خوراک گرفته تا گوسفند، گاو و الاغ غارت می‌کردند.

⁵For they came up with their livestock and their tents; they came in as locusts for multitude; both they and their camels were without number: and they came into the land to destroy it.

⁵ آنها با گلّه و رمه و چادر‌های خود همچون ملخ هجوم می‌آورند و همه‌چیز را از بین می‌بردند. تعداد آنها و شترهایشان آن‌قدر زیاد بود که نمی‌شد آنها را شمرد.

⁶Israel was brought very low because of Midian; and the children of Israel cried to Yahweh.

⁶ مردم اسرائیل در مقابل مدیانیان، بسیار ذلیل و ضعیف بودند. پس نزد خداوند گریه و زاری کرده، از او کمک خواستند.

⁷It happened, when the children of Israel cried to Yahweh because of Midian,

⁷ چون خداوند گریه و زاری ایشان را به‌خاطر ظلم مدیان شنید،

⁸that Yahweh sent a prophet to the children of Israel: and he said to them, “Thus says Yahweh, the God of Israel, ‘I brought you up from Egypt, and brought you forth out of the house of bondage;

⁸ نبی‌ای را برای مردم اسرائیل فرستاد. او به مردم گفت: «خداوند چنین می‌فرماید: من شما را از بردگی در مصر و از دست همهٔ کسانی‌که بر شما ظلم می‌کردند، رهانیدم. من آنها را از سر راه شما دور کردم و زمینشان را به شما بخشیدم.

⁹and I delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians, and out of the hand of all who oppressed you, and drove them out from before you, and gave you their land;

⁹ به شما گفتم که من خداوند خدای شما هستم. از خدایان اموریان که در زمین ایشان به سر می‌برید، نترسید. امّا شما به سخنان من گوش ندادید.»

¹⁰and I said to you, “I am Yahweh your God; you shall not fear the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell.” But you have not listened to my voice.’”

¹⁰ روزی فرشتهٔ خداوند آمد و در زیر درخت بلوطی، در عُفره نشست. آنجا متعلّق به یوآش ابیعزری بود. پسرش جدعون مخفیانه در چرخشت، گندم می‌کوبید تا از نظر مدیانیان پنهان باشد.

¹¹The angel of Yahweh came, and sat under the oak which was in Ophrah, that pertained to Joash the Abiezrite: and his son Gideon was beating out wheat in the winepress, to hide it from the Midianites.

¹¹ فرشتهٔ خداوند بر او ظاهر شد و گفت: «ای مرد دلاور، خداوند همراه توست.»

¹²The angel of Yahweh appeared to him, and said to him, “Yahweh is with you, you mighty man of valor!”

¹² جدعون جواب داد: «آقا اگر خداوند همراه ماست، پس چرا به این روز بد گرفتار هستیم؟ کجاست آن همهٔ کارهای عجیب خداوند، که اجداد ما برای ما تعریف می‌کردند و می‌گفتند: 'خداوند ما را از مصر بیرون آورد؟' امّا حالا ما را ترک کرده و اسیر مدیانیان ساخته است.»

¹³Gideon said to him, “Oh, my lord, if Yahweh is with us, why then has all this happened to us? Where are all his wondrous works which our fathers told us of, saying, ‘Didn’t Yahweh bring us up from Egypt?’ But now Yahweh has cast us off, and delivered us into the hand of Midian.”

¹³ خداوند رو به طرف او کرده فرمود: «با قدرتت، برو و مردم اسرائیل را از دست مدیانیان نجات بده. من تو را می‌فرستم.»

¹⁴Yahweh looked at him, and said, “Go in this your might, and save Israel from the hand of Midian. Haven’t I sent you?”

¹⁴ جدعون گفت: «چطور می‌توانم قوم اسرائیل را نجات بدهم، چون خاندان من ضعیف‌ترین خاندان طایفهٔ منسی است و من کوچکترین عضو خانواده‌ام می‌باشم؟»

¹⁵He said to him, “O Lord The word translated “Lord” is “Adonai.” , how shall I save Israel? Behold, my family is the poorest in Manasseh, and I am the least in my father’s house.”

¹⁵ خداوند فرمود: «من همراه تو هستم و تو می‌توانی همهٔ مدیانیان را شکست بدهی.»

¹⁶Yahweh said to him, “Surely I will be with you, and you shall strike the Midianites as one man.”

¹⁶ جدعون گفت: «اگر تو به من لطف داری، معجزه‌ای به من نشان بده تا بدانم که حقیقتاً تو خداوند هستی که با من حرف می‌زنی.

¹⁷He said to him, “If now I have found favor in your sight, then show me a sign that it is you who talk with me.

¹⁷ امّا لطفاً از اینجا نرو تا من بروم و یک هدیه بیاورم و به حضورت تقدیم کنم.» خداوند فرمود: «من می‌مانم تا بازگردی.»

¹⁸Please don’t go away, until I come to you, and bring out my present, and lay it before you.” He said, “I will wait until you come back.”

¹⁸ پس جدعون به خانهٔ خود رفت. بُزغاله‌ای را کباب کرد و مقداری آرد برداشته، از آن نان فطیر پُخت. بعد گوشت را در سبدی و آب گوشت را در کاسه‌ای ریخت و در زیر درخت بلوط به حضور فرشتهٔ خداوند تقدیم کرد.

¹⁹Gideon went in, and prepared a young goat, and unleavened cakes of an ephah 1 ephah is about 22 litres or about 2/3 of a bushel of meal. He put the meat in a basket and he put the broth in a pot, and brought it out to him under the oak, and presented it.

¹⁹ فرشتهٔ خداوند به او گفت: «این گوشت و نان فطیر را بگیر و بالای این سنگ بگذار و آب گوشت را بر آنها بریز.» جدعون اطاعت کرد.

²⁰The angel of God said to him, “Take the meat and the unleavened cakes, and lay them on this rock, and pour out the broth.” He did so.

²⁰ آنگاه فرشتهٔ خداوند، با نوک عصایی که در دستش بود، گوشت و نان فطیر را لمس کرد و آتشی از سنگ جهید و گوشت و نان فطیر را بلعید. بعد فرشتهٔ خداوند از نظرش ناپدید شد.

²¹Then the angel of Yahweh stretched out the end of the staff that was in his hand, and touched the meat and the unleavened cakes; and fire went up out of the rock, and consumed the meat and the unleavened cakes; and the angel of Yahweh departed out of his sight.

²¹ آنگاه جدعون دانست که او به راستی فرشتهٔ خداوند بود و با ترس گفت: «آه ای خداوند، من فرشتهٔ خداوند را روبه‌رو دیدم.»

²²Gideon saw that he was the angel of Yahweh; and Gideon said, “Alas, Lord Yahweh! Because I have seen the angel of Yahweh face to face!”

²² خداوند به او فرمود: «سلامت باش، نترس، تو نمی‌میری.»

²³Yahweh said to him, “Peace be to you! Don’t be afraid. You shall not die.”

²³ جدعون در آنجا قربانگاهی برای خداوند ساخت و آن را «خداوند سرچشمهٔ صلح و سلامتی است» نامید. (تا به امروز در عُفره که متعلّق به خاندان ابیعزریان است، باقی است.)

²⁴Then Gideon built an altar there to Yahweh, and called it “Yahweh is Peace or, Yahweh Shalom .” To this day it is still in Ophrah of the Abiezrites.

²⁴ در همان شب خداوند به او فرمود: «گاو پدرت را که هفت ساله است بگیر و به قربانگاه بعل، که متعلّق به پدرت است ببر. قربانگاه را ویران کن و الههٔ اشره را که در پهلوی آن است، بشکن.

²⁵It happened the same night, that Yahweh said to him, “Take your father’s bull, even the second bull seven years old, and throw down the altar of Baal that your father has, and cut down the Asherah that is by it;

²⁵ به جای آن برای خداوند خدای خود، بر سر این قلعه قربانگاهِ مناسبی بساز. بعد گاو را گرفته، با چوبِ الههٔ اشره قربانی سوختنی تقدیم کن.»

²⁶and build an altar to Yahweh your God on the top of this stronghold, in an orderly way, and take the second bull, and offer a burnt offering with the wood of the Asherah which you shall cut down.”

²⁶ جدعون ده نفر از خدمتکاران را با خود برد و طبق دستور خداوند رفتار کرد. چون از فامیل خود و مردم می‌ترسید، آن کار را در شب انجام داد.

²⁷Then Gideon took ten men of his servants, and did as Yahweh had spoken to him: and it happened, because he feared his father’s household and the men of the city, so that he could not do it by day, that he did it by night.

²⁷ صبح روز بعد، وقتی مردم شهر به آنجا آمدند، دیدند که قربانگاه ویران شده و الههٔ اشره شکسته و گاو دیگری بر قربانگاه تازه قربانی شده.

²⁸When the men of the city arose early in the morning, behold, the altar of Baal was broken down, and the Asherah was cut down that was by it, and the second bull was offered on the altar that was built.

²⁸ پس از یکدیگر پرسیدند: «این کار را چه کسی کرده است؟» بعد از جستجوی زیاد فهمیدند که کار جدعون پسر یوآش بوده است.

²⁹They said one to another, “Who has done this thing?” When they inquired and asked, they said, “Gideon the son of Joash has done this thing.”

²⁹ پس مردم شهر پیش یوآش رفتند و به او گفتند: «پسرت را بیرون بیاور. سزای او مرگ است، زیرا قربانگاه بعل را ویران کرده و الههٔ اشره را که در پهلوی آن بود، شکسته است.»

³⁰Then the men of the city said to Joash, “Bring out your son, that he may die, because he has broken down the altar of Baal, and because he has cut down the Asherah that was by it.”

³⁰ امّا یوآش به آنهایی که برای دستگیری پسرش آمده بودند، گفت: «شما می‌خواهید به بعل کمک کنید و از او طرفداری نمایید؟ ولی این را بدانید هرکسی که بخواهد از او دفاع کند تا فردا صبح خواهد مرد. اگر او واقعاً خداست، بگذارید خودش از خود دفاع کند چون قربانگاهش ویران شده است.»

³¹Joash said to all who stood against him, “Will you contend for Baal? Or will you save him? He who will contend for him, let him be put to death by morning. If he is a god, let him contend for himself, because someone has broken down his altar.”

³¹ از آن روز به بعد جدعون یروبعل نامیده شد. (یعنی بگذار بعل از خود دفاع کند.)

³²Therefore on that day he named him Jerub-Baal, “Jerub-Baal” means “Let Baal contend.” saying, “Let Baal contend against him, because he has broken down his altar.”

³² آنگاه همهٔ مدیانیان، عمالیقیان و مردم مشرق زمین متّحد شدند و از رود اردن عبور کرده، در دشت یزرعیل اردو زدند.

³³Then all the Midianites and the Amalekites and the children of the east assembled themselves together; and they passed over, and encamped in the valley of Jezreel.

³³ بعد روح خداوند بر جدعون آمد و او شیپور را نواخت و مردم ابیعزر را جمع کرد که به دنبال او بروند.

³⁴But the Spirit of Yahweh came on Gideon; and he blew a trumpet; and Abiezer was gathered together after him.

³⁴ قاصدانی را هم به تمام طایفهٔ منسی فرستاد و آنها هم آمدند و به دنبال او رفتند. همچنین به طایفه‌های اشیر، زبولون و نفتالی پیام فرستاد و آنها هم آمدند و به او پیوستند.

³⁵He sent messengers throughout all Manasseh; and they also were gathered together after him: and he sent messengers to Asher, and to Zebulun, and to Naphtali; and they came up to meet them.

³⁵ جدعون به خدا گفت: «اگر همان‌طور که وعده فرمودی، قوم اسرائیل را به وسیلهٔ من نجات می‌دهی،

³⁶Gideon said to God, “If you will save Israel by my hand, as you have spoken,

³⁶ پس من پشم گوسفند را در خرمنگاه می‌گذارم. اگر شبنم تنها بر پشم نشسته باشد و زمین خشک باشد، می‌دانم که اسرائیل به دست من نجات می‌یابد.»

³⁷behold, I will put a fleece of wool on the threshing floor; if there is dew on the fleece only, and it is dry on all the ground, then shall I know that you will save Israel by my hand, as you have spoken.”

³⁷ همین‌طور هم شد. وقتی صبح روز بعد از خواب بیدار شد، پشم را فشرد؛ از پشم آن‌قدر شبنم چکید که یک کاسه پُر شد.

³⁸It was so; for he rose up early on the next day, and pressed the fleece together, and wrung the dew out of the fleece, a bowl full of water.

³⁸ آنگاه جدعون به خدا گفت: «بر من خشمگین نشو. یک‌بار دیگر هم می‌خواهم امتحان کنم. این دفعه پشم خشک بماند و زمین اطراف آن با شبنم، تَر باشد.» خدا مطابق خواهش او عمل کرد. پشم خشک ماند و زمین اطراف آن با شبنم‌ تر شد.

³⁹Gideon said to God, “Don’t let your anger be kindled against me, and I will speak but this once. Please let me make a trial just this once with the fleece. Let it now be dry only on the fleece, and on all the ground let there be dew.”

³⁹ خدا مطابق خواهش او عمل کرد. پشم خشک ماند و زمین اطراف آن با شبنم‌ تر شد.

⁴⁰God did so that night: for it was dry on the fleece only, and there was dew on all the ground.
