¹It happened that when Jesus had finished directing his twelve disciples, he departed from there to teach and preach in their cities.

¹ عیسی این دستورات را به دوازده شاگرد خود داد و آنجا را ترک كرد تا در شهرهای مجاور تعلیم دهد و موعظه نماید.

²Now when John heard in the prison the works of Christ, he sent two of his disciples

² وقتی یحیی در زندان از كارهای مسیح باخبر شد، دو نفر از شاگردان خود را نزد او فرستاده

³and said to him, “Are you he who comes, or should we look for another?”

³ پرسید: «آیا تو همان شخصی هستی كه قرار است بیاید، یا ما در انتظار شخص دیگری باشیم؟»

⁴Jesus answered them, “Go and tell John the things which you hear and see:

⁴ عیسی در جواب گفت: «بروید و هر آنچه را كه می‌‌بینید و می‌شنوید به یحیی بگویید:

⁵ the blind receive their sight, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, Isaiah 35:5 the dead are raised up, and the poor have good news preached to them. Isaiah 61:1-4

⁵ كوران بینایی خود را باز می‌یابند، لنگان به راه می‌افتند و جذامیان پاک می‌گردند، كران شنوا و مردگان زنده می‌شوند و به بینوایان بشارت داده می‌شود.

⁶ Blessed is he who finds no occasion for stumbling in me.”

⁶ خوشا به حال کسی‌که در مورد من شک نكند.»

⁷As these went their way, Jesus began to say to the multitudes concerning John, “What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken by the wind?

⁷ درحالی‌که شاگردان یحیی از آنجا می‌رفتند، عیسی دربارهٔ یحیی شروع به صحبت كرد و به مردمی كه در اطراف او ایستاده بودند گفت: «برای دیدن چه چیزی به بیابان رفتید؟ برای تماشای نی‌ای كه از باد می‌لرزد؟

⁸ But what did you go out to see? A man in soft clothing? Behold, those who wear soft clothing are in king’s houses.

⁸ پس برای دیدن چه چیز رفتید؟ برای دیدن مردی كه لباسهای ابریشمی و گرانبها پوشیده بود؟ مسلّماً جای چنین افرادی در کاخهای سلطنتی است

⁹ But why did you go out? To see a prophet? Yes, I tell you, and much more than a prophet.

⁹ پس شما برای دیدن چه چیزی از شهر بیرون رفتید؟ برای دیدن یک نبی؟ آری، به شما می‌گویم كه او از یک نبی هم بالاتر است.

¹⁰ For this is he, of whom it is written, ‘Behold, I send my messenger before your face, who will prepare your way before you.’ Malachi 3:1

¹⁰ او کسی است كه کتاب‌مقدّس دربارهٔ وی می‌فرماید: 'این است قاصد من كه او را پیش روی تو می‌فرستم و او راه را برای آمدن تو آماده خواهد ساخت.'

¹¹ Most certainly I tell you, among those who are born of women there has not arisen anyone greater than John the Baptizer; yet he who is least in the Kingdom of Heaven is greater than he.

¹¹ بدانید كه كسی بزرگتر از یحیی به دنیا نیامده است. با وجود این كوچكترین شخص در پادشاهی آسمان از او بزرگتر است.

¹² From the days of John the Baptizer until now, the Kingdom of Heaven suffers violence, and the violent take it by force. or, plunder it.

¹² از زمان یحیی تعمید‌دهنده تا به امروز پادشاهی آسمان مورد حملات سخت قرار گرفته و زورمندان برای دست یافتن به آن كوشش می‌نمایند.

¹³ For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John.

¹³ همهٔ انبیا و تورات تا ظهور یحیی دربارهٔ پادشاهی خدا پیشگویی کرده‌اند.

¹⁴ If you are willing to receive it, this is Elijah, who is to come.

¹⁴ اگر اینها را قبول دارید، باید بدانید كه یحیی همان الیاس موعود است.

¹⁵ He who has ears to hear, let him hear.

¹⁵ اگر گوش شنوا دارید بشنوید.

¹⁶ “But to what shall I compare this generation? It is like children sitting in the marketplaces, who call to their companions

¹⁶ «امّا من مردمان این زمانه را به چه چیز تشبیه كنم؟ آنها مانند كودكانی هستند كه در بازار می‌نشینند و با صدای بلند به یكدیگر می‌گویند:

¹⁷ and say, ‘We played the flute for you, and you didn’t dance. We mourned for you, and you didn’t lament.’

¹⁷ 'ما برای شما نی زدیم، نرقصیدید! نوحه‌گری كردیم، گریه نكردید!'

¹⁸ For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, ‘He has a demon.’

¹⁸ وقتی یحیی آمد نه می‌خورد و نه می‌نوشید، ولی همه می‌گفتند، او دیو دارد!

¹⁹ The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Behold, a gluttonous man and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’ But wisdom is justified by her children. NU reads “actions” instead of “children” ”

¹⁹ وقتی پسر انسان آمد که می‌خورد و می‌نوشد مردم می‌گویند: 'نگاه كنید، او یک آدم پُرخور، میگسار و رفیق باجگیران و گناهكاران است!' با وجود این، درستی حكمت خدایی به وسیلهٔ نتایج آن به ثبوت می‌رسد.»

²⁰Then he began to denounce the cities in which most of his mighty works had been done, because they didn’t repent.

²⁰ آنگاه عیسی دربارهٔ شهرهایی صحبت كرد كه اكثر معجزات او در آنها روی داده بود و مردم آن شهرها را به‌خاطر اینكه توبه نكرده بودند توبیخ نموده

²¹ “Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the mighty works had been done in Tyre and Sidon which were done in you, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes.

²¹ گفت: «وای بر تو ای خورزین و وای بر تو ای بیت‌صیدا، اگر معجزاتی كه در شما انجام شد در صور و صیدون انجام می‌شد، مدّتها پیش از این، پلاس‌پوش و خاكسترنشین توبه می‌کردند.

²² But I tell you, it will be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon on the day of judgment than for you.

²² امّا بدانید كه در روز قیامت برای صور و صیدون بیشتر قابل تحمّل خواهد بود تا برای شما.

²³ You, Capernaum, who are exalted to heaven, you will go down to Hades. or, Hell For if the mighty works had been done in Sodom which were done in you, it would have remained until this day.

²³ و امّا تو ای كفرناحوم كه سر به آسمان كشیده‌ای! به دوزخ سرنگون خواهی شد، زیرا اگر معجزاتی كه در تو انجام شد در سدوم انجام می‌شد، آن شهر تا به امروز باقی می‌ماند.

²⁴ But I tell you that it will be more tolerable for the land of Sodom, on the day of judgment, than for you.”

²⁴ امّا بدان كه در روز قیامت برای شهر سدوم بیشتر قابل تحمّل خواهد بود تا برای تو.»

²⁵At that time, Jesus answered, “I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that you hid these things from the wise and understanding, and revealed them to infants.

²⁵ در آن وقت عیسی به سخنان خود ادامه داده گفت: «ای پدر، ای خداوند آسمان و زمین، تو را سپاس می‌گویم كه این امور را از دانایان و خردمندان پنهان داشته و به ساده‌دلان آشكار ساخته‌ای.

²⁶ Yes, Father, for so it was well-pleasing in your sight.

²⁶ آری ای پدر، خواست تو چنین بود.

²⁷ All things have been delivered to me by my Father. No one knows the Son, except the Father; neither does anyone know the Father, except the Son, and he to whom the Son desires to reveal him.

²⁷ «پدر همه‌چیز را به من سپرده است و هیچ‌کس جز پدر، پسر را نمی‌شناسد و هیچ‌کس پدر را نمی‌شناسد، به جز پسر و کسانی‌که پسر بخواهد پدر را به ایشان بشناساند.

²⁸ “Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.

²⁸ «بیایید نزد من ای تمامی زحمتكشان و گرانباران و من به شما آرامی خواهم داد.

²⁹ Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart; and you will find rest for your souls.

²⁹ یوغ مرا به گردن گیرید و از من تعلیم یابید، زیرا من بردبار و فروتن هستم و جانهای شما آرامی خواهد یافت، زیرا یوغ من آسان و بار من سبک است.»

³⁰ For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”

³⁰ زیرا یوغ من آسان و بار من سبک است.»
