¹Now it happened, when it was reported to Sanballat and Tobiah, and to Geshem the Arabian, and to the rest of our enemies, that I had built the wall, and that there was no breach left therein; (though even to that time I had not set up the doors in the gates;)

¹Когда дошло до слуха Санаваллата иТовии и Гешема Аравитянина и прочих неприятелей наших, что я отстроил стену, и не оставалось в ней повреждений – впрочем до того времени я еще не ставил дверей в ворота, –

²that Sanballat and Geshem sent to me, saying, “Come, let us meet together in the villages in the plain of Ono.” But they intended to harm me.

²тогда прислал Санаваллат и Гешем ко мне сказать: приди, и сойдемся в одном из сел на равнине Оно. Они замышляли сделать мне зло.

³I sent messengers to them, saying, “I am doing a great work, so that I can’t come down. Why should the work cease, while I leave it, and come down to you?”

³Но я послал к ним послов сказать: я занят большим делом, не могу сойти; дело остановилось бы, если бы я оставилего и сошел к вам.

⁴They sent to me four times after this sort; and I answered them the same way.

⁴Четыре раза присылали они ко мне с таким же приглашением, и я отвечал им то же.

⁵Then Sanballat sent his servant to me the same way the fifth time with an open letter in his hand,

⁵Тогда прислал ко мне Санаваллат в пятый раз своего слугу, у которого в руке былооткрытое письмо.

⁶in which was written, “It is reported among the nations, and Gashmu says it, that you and the Jews intend to rebel. Because of that, you are building the wall. You would be their king, according to these words.

⁶В нем было написано: слух носится у народов, и Гешем говорит, будто ты и Иудеи задумали отпасть, для чего и строишь стену и хочешь быть у них царем, по тем же слухам;

⁷You have also appointed prophets to preach of you at Jerusalem, saying, ‘There is a king in Judah!’ Now it will be reported to the king according to these words. Come now therefore, and let us take counsel together.”

⁷и пророков поставил ты, чтоб они разглашали о тебе в Иерусалиме и говорили: царь Иудейский! И такие речи дойдут до царя. Итак приходи, и посоветуемся вместе.

⁸Then I sent to him, saying, “There are no such things done as you say, but you imagine them out of your own heart.”

⁸Но я послал к нему сказать: ничего такого не было, о чем ты говоришь;ты выдумал это своим умом.

⁹For they all would have made us afraid, saying, “Their hands will be weakened from the work, that it not be done. But now, strengthen my hands.”

⁹Ибо все они стращали нас, думая: опустятся руки их от дела сего, ионо не состоится; но я тем более укрепил руки мои.

¹⁰I went to the house of Shemaiah the son of Delaiah the son of Mehetabel, who was shut in at his home; and he said, “Let us meet together in God’s house, within the temple, and let us shut the doors of the temple; for they will come to kill you; yes, in the night will they come to kill you.”

¹⁰Пришел я в дом Шемаии, сына Делаии, сына Мегетавелова, и онзаперся и сказал: пойдем в дом Божий, внутрь храма,и запрем за собою двери храма, потому что придут убить тебя, и придут убить тебя ночью.

¹¹I said, “Should such a man as I flee? Who is there that, being such as I, would go into the temple to save his life? I will not go in.”

¹¹Но я сказал: может ли бежать такой человек, как я? Может ли такой, как я, войти в храм, чтобы остаться живым? Не пойду.

¹²I discerned, and behold, God had not sent him; but he pronounced this prophecy against me. Tobiah and Sanballat had hired him.

¹²Я знал, что не Бог послал его, хотя он пророчески говорил мне, ночто Товия и Санаваллат подкупили его.

¹³He hired so that I would be afraid, do so, and sin, and that they might have material for an evil report, that they might reproach me.

¹³Для того он был подкуплен, чтоб я устрашился и сделал так и согрешил, и чтобы имели о мне худое мнение и преследовали меня за это укоризнами.

¹⁴“Remember, my God, Tobiah and Sanballat according to these their works, and also the prophetess Noadiah, and the rest of the prophets, that would have put me in fear.”

¹⁴Помяни, Боже мой, Товию и Санаваллата по сим делам их, а также пророчицу Ноадию и прочих пророков, которые хотели устрашить меня!

¹⁵So the wall was finished in the twenty-fifth day of Elul, in fifty-two days.

¹⁵Стена была совершена в двадцать пятый день месяцаЕлула, в пятьдесят два дня.

¹⁶It happened, when all our enemies heard of it, that all the nations that were about us were afraid, and were much cast down in their own eyes; for they perceived that this work was worked of our God.

¹⁶Когда услышали об этом все неприятели наши, и увидели это все народы, которые вокруг нас, тогда они очень упали в глазах своих и познали, что это дело сделано Богом нашим.

¹⁷Moreover in those days the nobles of Judah sent many letters to Tobiah, and Tobiah’s letters came to them.

¹⁷Сверх того в те дни знатнейшие Иудеи много писали писем, которые посылались к Товии, а Товиины письма приходили к ним.

¹⁸For there were many in Judah sworn to him, because he was the son-in-law of Shecaniah the son of Arah; and his son Jehohanan had taken the daughter of Meshullam the son of Berechiah as wife.

¹⁸Ибо многие в Иудее были в клятвенном союзе с ним, потому что он был зять Шехании, сын Арахова, а сын его Иоханан взял за себя дочь Мешуллама, сына Верехии.

¹⁹Also they spoke of his good deeds before me, and reported my words to him. Tobiah sent letters to put me in fear.

¹⁹Даже о доброте его они говорили при мне, и мои слова переносились к нему. Товия присылал письма, чтоб устрашить меня.
