1Yahweh said to Samuel, “How long will you mourn for Saul, since I have rejected him from being king over Israel? Fill your horn with oil, and go. I will send you to Jesse the Bethlehemite; for I have provided a king for myself among his sons.”
1In GOSPOD reče Samuelu: Doklej boš žaloval nad Savlom, ker sem ga jaz zavrgel, da ne bo kralj Izraelu? Napolni rog svoj z oljem in pojdi, pošljem te k Jeseju Betlehemskemu; zakaj med njegovimi sinovi sem si ugledal kralja.
2Samuel said, “How can I go? If Saul hears it, he will kill me.” Yahweh said, “Take a heifer with you, and say, I have come to sacrifice to Yahweh.
2Samuel pa reče: Kako naj grem? Ako zve Savel, me umori. GOSPOD veli: Vzemi junico s seboj in reci: Prišel sem darovat GOSPODU!
3Call Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show you what you shall do. You shall anoint to me him whom I name to you.”
3In povabi Jeseja k daritvi, in pokažem ti, kaj naj storiš; in pomazili mi njega, za katerega ti bom velel.
4Samuel did that which Yahweh spoke, and came to Bethlehem. The elders of the city came to meet him trembling, and said, “Do you come peaceably?”
4Samuel torej stori, kar je rekel GOSPOD, in pride v Betlehem. In mestni starejšine mu pridejo s trepetom naproti in reko: Je li tvoj prihod miren?
5He said, “Peaceably; I have come to sacrifice to Yahweh. Sanctify yourselves, and come with me to the sacrifice.” He sanctified Jesse and his sons, and called them to the sacrifice.
5On odgovori: Miren; prišel sem darovat GOSPODU. Posvetite se in pridite z menoj k daritvi. In posvetil je Jeseja in sinove njegove ter jih povabil k daritvi.
6It happened, when they had come, that he looked at Eliab, and said, “Surely Yahweh’s anointed is before him.”
6In ko pridejo noter, pogleda Eliaba in reče: Gotovo je maziljenec GOSPODOV pred Njim.
7But Yahweh said to Samuel, “Don’t look on his face, or on the height of his stature; because I have rejected him: for I see not as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but Yahweh looks at the heart.”
7GOSPOD pa veli Samuelu: Ne glej lica njegovega, ne visokosti njegove postave, ker sem ga zavrgel: zakaj ne gledam, kar gleda človek. Človek namreč gleda, kar je pred očmi, GOSPOD pa gleda v srce.
8Then Jesse called Abinadab, and made him pass before Samuel. He said, “Neither has Yahweh chosen this one.”
8Nato pokliče Jesej Abinadaba in mu veli iti pred Samuela. In on reče: Tega tudi ni GOSPOD izvolil.
9Then Jesse made Shammah to pass by. He said, “Neither has Yahweh chosen this one.”
9In Jesej veli, naj pristopi Sama. A on reče: Tega tudi ni GOSPOD izbral.
10Jesse made seven of his sons to pass before Samuel. Samuel said to Jesse, “Yahweh has not chosen these.”
10Tako je velel Jesej sedmerim sinovom svojim iti pred Samuela. A Samuel reče: GOSPOD ni izvolil nobenega izmed teh.
11Samuel said to Jesse, “Are all your children here?” He said, “There remains yet the youngest, and behold, he is keeping the sheep.” Samuel said to Jesse, “Send and get him; for we will not sit down until he comes here.”
11Nato vpraša Samuel Jeseja: So li že dečki vsi? On odvrne: Še eden je, najmlajši, in glej, pase ovce! In Samuel veli Jeseju: Pošlji tja in ga pripelji, zakaj ne sedemo za mizo, dokler ne pride sem.
12He sent, and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, and withal of a beautiful face, and goodly to look on. Yahweh said, “Arise, anoint him; for this is he.”
12Pošlje torej, in ga privede noter. In bil je rdečkast in lepega obličja in zale postave. In GOSPOD veli: Vstani in ga pomazili, zakaj ta je.
13Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his brothers: and the Spirit of Yahweh came mightily on David from that day forward. So Samuel rose up, and went to Ramah.
13Tedaj vzame Samuel rog z oljem in ga pomazili sredi bratov njegovih. In Duh GOSPODOV je prišel z močjo nad Davida od tega dne in poslej. In Samuel je vstal in šel v Ramo.
14Now the Spirit of Yahweh departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from Yahweh troubled him.
14Duh GOSPODOV pa je šel od Savla, in hud duh od GOSPODA ga je vznemirjal.
15Saul’s servants said to him, “See now, an evil spirit from God troubles you.
15In Savlovi služabniki mu reko: Glej, prosim, hud duh od Boga te vznemirja.
16Let our lord now command your servants who are before you, to seek out a man who is a skillful player on the harp. It shall happen, when the evil spirit from God is on you, that he shall play with his hand, and you shall be well.”
16Ukaži, gospod naš, služabnikom svojim, ki so pred teboj, naj ti poiščejo moža, ki zna dobro igrati na harfo; in kadar pride nate hudi duh od Boga, bo igral mož z roko svojo, in bolje ti bode.
17Saul said to his servants, “Provide me now a man who can play well, and bring him to me.”
17In Savel veli služabnikom svojim: Ozrite se mi torej po možu, ki dobro zna na strune, ter mi ga pripeljite.
18Then one of the young men answered, and said, “Behold, I have seen a son of Jesse the Bethlehemite, who is skillful in playing, a mighty man of valor, a man of war, prudent in speech, and a comely person; and Yahweh is with him.”
18Nato odgovori eden iz mladeničev in reče: Glej, videl sem sina Jeseja Betlehemskega, ta zna dobro na strune in je hraber junak in vojščak ter pameten v govoru in lepe postave mož, in GOSPOD je ž njim.
19Therefore Saul sent messengers to Jesse, and said, “Send me David your son, who is with the sheep.”
19Zato pošlje Savel sle k Jeseju in sporoči: Pošlji mi Davida, sina svojega, ki je pri ovcah.
20Jesse took a donkey loaded with bread, and a bottle of wine, and a young goat, and sent them by David his son to Saul.
20Tedaj vzame Jesej osla in mu naloži kruha in meh vina in kozliča, in pošlje to Savlu po svojem sinu Davidu.
21David came to Saul, and stood before him. He loved him greatly; and he became his armor bearer.
21Tako je prišel David k Savlu, in stal je v službo pred njim, in silno se mu je priljubil in je postal njegov oproda.
22Saul sent to Jesse, saying, “Please let David stand before me; for he has found favor in my sight.”
22In Savel pošlje k Jeseju in sporoči: Prosim, naj ostane David pred mano, zakaj našel je milost v mojih očeh.In bilo je, kadar je tisti duh od Boga prišel nad Savla, da je David vzel harfo in udarjal z roko na strune, in Savlu se je polajšalo in mu je bilo bolje, in hudi duh je šel od njega.
23It happened, when the spirit from God was on Saul, that David took the harp, and played with his hand: so Saul was refreshed, and was well, and the evil spirit departed from him.
23In bilo je, kadar je tisti duh od Boga prišel nad Savla, da je David vzel harfo in udarjal z roko na strune, in Savlu se je polajšalo in mu je bilo bolje, in hudi duh je šel od njega.
