¹In the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim king of Judah came Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon to Jerusalem, and besieged it.

¹V tretjem letu kraljevanja Jojakima, kralja Judovega, je prišel Nebukadnezar, kralj v Babilonu, pred Jeruzalem in ga je oblegal.

²The Lord The word translated “Lord” is “Adonai.” gave Jehoiakim king of Judah into his hand, with part of the vessels of the house of God The Hebrew word rendered “God” is “Elohim.” ; and he carried them into the land of Shinar to the house of his god: and he brought the vessels into the treasure house of his god.

²In Gospod mu je dal v roko Jojakima, kralja na Judovem, in nekatere izmed posod hiše Božje. In prepeljal jih je v deželo Sinear, v svojega boga hišo: posode tiste je dejal v zakladnico boga svojega.

³The king spoke to Ashpenaz the master of his eunuchs, that he should bring in certain of the children of Israel, even of the seed royal and of the nobles;

³In kralj je ukazal Aspenazu, načelniku svojih dvornikov, naj pripelje mladeničev iz sinov Izraelovih od kraljevega zaroda in od plemenitnikov,

⁴youths in whom was no blemish, but well-favored, and skillful in all wisdom, and endowed with knowledge, and understanding science, and such as had ability to stand in the king’s palace; and that he should teach them the learning and the language of the Chaldeans.

⁴brez kakršnega koli madeža, lepe postave in dovzetnih za pouk v vsej modrosti, bistre pameti in obdarovanih z razumnostjo in sposobnih, da stoje v palači kraljevi ter da bi jih učili pismenstva in jezika Kaldejcev.

⁵The king appointed for them a daily portion of the king’s dainties, and of the wine which he drank, and that they should be nourished three years; that at its end they should stand before the king.

⁵In kralj jim je določil vsakdanji obrok kraljevih jedil in vina, ki ga je sam pil, in da jih tako vzgajajo tri leta, in potem naj bi stali pred kraljem.

⁶Now among these were, of the children of Judah, Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah.

⁶Bili so pa med njimi, iz sinov Judovih: Daniel, Hananija, Misael in Azarija.

⁷The prince of the eunuchs gave names to them: to Daniel he gave the name of Belteshazzar; and to Hananiah, of Shadrach; and to Mishael, of Meshach; and to Azariah, of Abednego.

⁷In knez dvornikov jim je dal imena, in je imenoval Daniela Beltsazarja in Hananija Sadraha in Misaela Mesaha in Azarija Abednega.

⁸But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the king’s dainties, nor with the wine which he drank: therefore he requested of the prince of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself.

⁸Ali Daniel se je namenil v srcu, da se ne bo omadeževal s kraljevo jedjo in z vinom, ki ga je kralj pil; zato poprosi kneza dvornikov, da mu ne bodi treba se omadeževati.

⁹Now God made Daniel to find kindness and compassion in the sight of the prince of the eunuchs.

⁹Bog pa je dal Danielu doseči milost in usmiljenje pri knezu dvornikov.

¹⁰The prince of the eunuchs said to Daniel, I fear my lord the king, who has appointed your food and your drink: for why should he see your faces worse looking than the youths who are of your own age? so would you endanger my head with the king.

¹⁰In reče knez dvornikov Danielu: Bojim se gospoda svojega, kralja, ki vam je določil jed in pijačo; kajti čemu naj vidi, da so vaši obrazi medlejši nego drugih mladeničev vaše starosti? Tako bi bili krivi, če bi mi kralj vzel glavo.

¹¹Then Daniel said to the steward whom the prince of the eunuchs had appointed over Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah:

¹¹Tedaj reče Daniel oskrbniku, ki ga je bil postavil knez dvornikov nad Danielom, Hananijem, Misaelom in Azarijem:

¹²Test your servants, I beg you, ten days; and let them give us vegetables to eat, and water to drink.

¹²Prosim, izkusi nas, hlapce svoje, deset dni, in naj nam dajo jesti sočivja in piti vode.

¹³Then let our faces be looked on before you, and the face of the youths who eat of the king’s dainties; and as you see, deal with your servants.

¹³Potem naj ogledajo obraze naše vpričo tebe in obraze mladeničev, ki jedo kraljevo jed, in kakor boš videl, tako stóri s hlapci svojimi.

¹⁴So he listened to them in this matter, and proved them ten days.

¹⁴Poslušal jih je torej v tej reči in naredil poskušnjo ž njimi deset dni.

¹⁵At the end of ten days their faces appeared fairer, and they were fatter in flesh, than all the youths who ate of the king’s dainties.

¹⁵In po desetih dneh so se kazali njih obrazi boljši in mesnatejši nego vseh mladeničev, ki so jedli jed kraljevo.

¹⁶So the steward took away their dainties, and the wine that they should drink, and gave them pulse.

¹⁶Tedaj jim oskrbnik odvzame jed in vino, ki jim ga je bilo piti, in jim je dajal sočivja.

¹⁷Now as for these four youths, God gave them knowledge and skill in all learning and wisdom: and Daniel had understanding in all visions and dreams.

¹⁷Tem štirim mladeničem pa je Bog dal znanje in razumnost v vsem slovstvu in modrosti, in Daniel je znal razbirati vse prikazni in sanje.

¹⁸At the end of the days which the king had appointed for bringing them in, the prince of the eunuchs brought them in before Nebuchadnezzar.

¹⁸In ko so minili dnevi, po katerih je bil kralj določil, da jih pripeljejo k njemu, jih je privedel knez dvornikov pred Nebukadnezarja.

¹⁹The king talked with them; and among them all was found none like Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah: therefore stood they before the king.

¹⁹In kralj je govoril ž njimi; a med njimi vsemi ni bilo nobenega kakor Daniel, Hananija, Misael in Azarija; zato so stali v službi pred kraljem.

²⁰In every matter of wisdom and understanding, concerning which the king inquired of them, he found them ten times better than all the magicians and enchanters who were in all his realm.

²⁰In v vsaki stvari modrosti in razumnosti, za katero jih je vprašal kralj, jih je našel desekrat boljše nego vse pismouke in rotilce, ki so bili po vsej državi njegovi.In Daniel je ostal do prvega leta kralja Cira.

²¹Daniel continued even to the first year of king Cyrus.
