¹Let not many of you be teachers, my brothers, knowing that we will receive heavier judgment.

¹Ne bodite mnogi učitelji, bratje moji, ker veste, da prejmemo težjo sodbo.

²For in many things we all stumble. If anyone doesn’t stumble in word, the same is a perfect man, able to bridle the whole body also.

²V mnogem namreč napačno delamo vsi. Če kdo v besedi ne stori napačno, ta je popoln mož, zmožen brzdati tudi vse telo.

³Indeed, we put bits into the horses’ mouths so that they may obey us, and we guide their whole body.

³Ako devamo konjem uzde v gobce, da so nam poslušni, vladamo tudi ves njih život.

⁴Behold, the ships also, though they are so big and are driven by fierce winds, are yet guided by a very small rudder, wherever the pilot desires.

⁴Glej, tudi ladje, če so še tako velike in jih silni vetrovi gonijo, obrača i najmanjše krmilo, kamorkoli hoče vodnikova namera.

⁵So the tongue is also a little member, and boasts great things. See how a small fire can spread to a large forest!

⁵Tako je tudi jezik majhen ud in se veliko ponaša. Glej, majhen ogenj, kolikšen gozd zažge!

⁶And the tongue is a fire. The world of iniquity among our members is the tongue, which defiles the whole body, and sets on fire the course of nature, and is set on fire by Gehenna. or, Hell

⁶Tudi jezik je ogenj; kot svet krivice se kaže jezik med udi našimi, ki oskrunja vse telo in zažiga kolo življenja, njega pa zažiga pekel.

⁷For every kind of animal, bird, creeping thing, and thing in the sea, is tamed, and has been tamed by mankind.

⁷Kajti sleherno pleme zveri in ptičev, golazni in morskih živali kroti in je ukrotil rod človeški,

⁸But nobody can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison.

⁸jezika pa ne more ukrotiti noben človek; zlo neukrotno je poln smrtnega strupa!

⁹With it we bless our God and Father, and with it we curse men, who are made in the image of God.

⁹Ž njim blagoslavljamo Gospoda in Očeta in ž njim preklinjamo ljudi, ustvarjene po podobi Božji;

¹⁰Out of the same mouth comes forth blessing and cursing. My brothers, these things ought not to be so.

¹⁰iz istih ust prihaja blagoslov in kletev. To, bratje moji, se ne sme tako goditi!

¹¹Does a spring send out from the same opening fresh and bitter water?

¹¹Saj pač studenec iz iste votline ne bruha sladke in grenke vode?

¹²Can a fig tree, my brothers, yield olives, or a vine figs? Thus no spring yields both salt water and fresh water.

¹²More li, bratje moji, smokva roditi olive ali trta smokve? Tudi slana voda ne more delati sladke.

¹³Who is wise and understanding among you? Let him show by his good conduct that his deeds are done in gentleness of wisdom.

¹³Kdo je moder in razumen med vami? Kaže naj z lepim vedenjem dela svoja v modri krotkosti.

¹⁴But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your heart, don’t boast and don’t lie against the truth.

¹⁴Če pa imate grenko zavist in sebičnost v srcu svojem, nikar se ne hvalite in ne lažite zoper resnico!

¹⁵This wisdom is not that which comes down from above, but is earthly, sensual, and demonic.

¹⁵To ni modrost, ki prihaja od zgoraj, ampak zemeljska, živalska, vražja.

¹⁶For where jealousy and selfish ambition are, there is confusion and every evil deed.

¹⁶Kjer je namreč zavist in sebičnost, tam je nerednost in vse zlo dejanje.

¹⁷But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceful, gentle, reasonable, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy.

¹⁷Modrost pa, ki je od zgoraj, je prvič čista, potem miroljubna, nežnočutna, dovzetna, polna usmiljenja in dobrega sadu, dvoma prosta, brez hinavščine.Sad pravičnosti pa se seje v miru njim, ki napravljajo mir.

¹⁸Now the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.
