¹The elder, to the chosen lady and her children, whom I love in truth; and not I only, but also all those who know the truth;

¹ข้าพเจ้าผู้ปกครอง เรียน มายังท่านสุภาพสตรีที่ทรงเลือกไว้ และบรรดาบุตรของเธอ ผู้ซึ่งข้าพเจ้ารักเนื่องในความจริง และมิใช่แต่ข้าพเจ้าเท่านั้น แต่คนทั้งปวงที่ได้รู้จักความจริงก็รักด้วย

²for the truth’s sake, which remains in us, and it will be with us forever:

²เพราะเห็นแก่ความจริงที่อยู่ในเราทั้งหลาย และซึ่งจะดำรงอยู่กับเราเป็นนิตย์

³Grace, mercy, and peace will be with us, from God the Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of the Father, in truth and love.

³พระกรุณาธิคุณ พระเมตตาคุณ และสันติสุขจากพระเจ้าพระบิดา และจากพระเยซูคริสต์เจ้าพระบุตรแห่งพระบิดา สถิตอยู่กับท่านทั้งหลายในความจริงและในความรัก

⁴I rejoice greatly that I have found some of your children walking in truth, even as we have been commanded by the Father.

⁴ข้าพเจ้ามีความยินดีเป็นอย่างยิ่งที่เห็นบุตรของท่านดำเนินตามความจริง เหมือนเราได้รับพระบัญญัติจากพระบิดา

⁵Now I beg you, dear lady, not as though I wrote to you a new commandment, but that which we had from the beginning, that we love one another.

⁵และท่านสุภาพสตรี บัดนี้ข้าพเจ้าขอวิงวอนท่าน มิใช่เสมือนหนึ่งว่าข้าพเจ้าเขียนพระบัญญัติใหม่ถึงท่าน แต่เป็นพระบัญญัติที่เราได้มีมาแล้วตั้งแต่เริ่มแรก นั่นก็คือให้เราทั้งหลายรักซึ่งกันและกัน

⁶This is love, that we should walk according to his commandments. This is the commandment, even as you heard from the beginning, that you should walk in it.

⁶และความรักนั้นก็คือ การที่เราทั้งหลายประพฤติตามพระบัญญัติของพระองค์ นี่เป็นพระบัญญัตินั้นซึ่งท่านทั้งหลายได้ยินได้ฟังมาตั้งแต่เริ่มแรก เพื่อท่านทั้งหลายจะประพฤติตาม

⁷For many deceivers have gone out into the world, those who don’t confess that Jesus Christ came in the flesh. This is the deceiver and the Antichrist.

⁷เพราะว่ามีผู้ล่อลวงเป็นอันมากออกเที่ยวไปในโลก คือคนที่ไม่รับว่าพระเยซูคริสต์ได้เสด็จมาเป็นมนุษย์ คนนั้นแหละเป็นผู้ล่อลวงและเป็นปฏิปักษ์กับพระคริสต์

⁸Watch yourselves, that we don’t lose the things which we have accomplished, but that we receive a full reward.

⁸ท่านทั้งหลายจงระวังตัวให้ดี เพื่อเราจะได้ไม่สูญเสียสิ่งที่เราได้กระทำมาแล้ว แต่ว่าเราจะได้รับบำเหน็จเต็มที่

⁹Whoever transgresses and doesn’t remain in the teaching of Christ, doesn’t have God. He who remains in the teaching, the same has both the Father and the Son.

⁹ผู้ใดละเมิดและไม่อยู่ในพระโอวาทของพระคริสต์ ผู้นั้นก็ไม่มีพระเจ้า ผู้ใดอยู่ในพระโอวาทของพระคริสต์ ผู้นั้นก็มีทั้งพระบิดาและพระบุตร

¹⁰If anyone comes to you, and doesn’t bring this teaching, don’t receive him into your house, and don’t welcome him,

¹⁰ถ้าผู้ใดมาหาท่านและไม่นำพระโอวาทนี้มาด้วย อย่ารับเขาไว้ในเรือน และอย่าอวยพรเขาเลย

¹¹for he who welcomes him participates in his evil works.

¹¹เพราะว่าผู้ที่อวยพรเขา ก็เข้าส่วนในการกระทำชั่วของเขานั้น

¹²Having many things to write to you, I don’t want to do so with paper and ink, but I hope to come to you, and to speak face to face, that our joy may be made full.

¹²ข้าพเจ้ายังมีข้อความอีกหลายข้อที่จะเขียนถึงท่าน แต่ก็ไม่อยากใช้กระดาษและน้ำหมึกเขียน ข้าพเจ้าหวังว่าจะมาหาท่าน และสนทนากับท่านเฉพาะหน้า เพื่อความปีติยินดีของเราจะได้เต็มเปี่ยม
