¹It happened that, while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul, having passed through the upper country, came to Ephesus, and found certain disciples.

¹ต่อมาขณะที่อปอลโลยังอยู่ในเมืองโครินธ์นั้น เปาโลได้ไปตามแว่นแคว้นฝ่ายเหนือ แล้วมายังเมืองเอเฟซัส และพบสาวกบางคน

²He said to them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?” They said to him, “No, we haven’t even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.”

²จึงถามเขาว่า "ตั้งแต่ท่านทั้งหลายเชื่อนั้น ท่านได้รับพระวิญญาณบริสุทธิ์หรือเปล่า" เขาตอบเปาโลว่า "เปล่า เรื่องพระวิญญาณบริสุทธิ์นั้นเราก็ยังไม่เคยได้ยินเลย"

³He said, “Into what then were you baptized?” They said, “Into John’s baptism.”

³เปาโลจึงถามเขาว่า "ถ้าอย่างนั้นท่านได้รับบัพติศมาอันใดเล่า" เขาตอบว่า "บัพติศมาของยอห์น"

⁴Paul said, “John indeed baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying to the people that they should believe in the one who would come after him, that is, in Jesus.”

⁴เปาโลจึงว่า "ยอห์นให้รับบัพติศมาสำแดงถึงการกลับใจใหม่ก็จริง แล้วบอกคนทั้งปวงให้เชื่อในพระองค์ผู้จะเสด็จมาภายหลังคือพระเยซูคริสต์"

⁵When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.

⁵เมื่อเขาได้ยินอย่างนั้น เขาจึงรับบัพติศมาในพระนามของพระเยซูเจ้า

⁶When Paul had laid his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they spoke with other languages and prophesied.

⁶เมื่อเปาโลได้วางมือบนเขาแล้ว พระวิญญาณบริสุทธิ์ก็เสด็จลงมาบนเขา เขาจึงพูดภาษาแปลกๆและได้พยากรณ์ด้วย

⁷They were about twelve men in all.

⁷คนเหล่านั้นมีผู้ชายประมาณสิบสองคน

⁸He entered into the synagogue, and spoke boldly for a period of three months, reasoning and persuading about the things concerning the Kingdom of God.

⁸เปาโลเข้าไปกล่าวโต้แย้งในธรรมศาลาด้วยใจกล้าสิ้นสามเดือน ชักชวนให้เชื่อในสิ่งที่กล่าวถึงอาณาจักรของพระเจ้า

⁹But when some were hardened and disobedient, speaking evil of the Way before the multitude, he departed from them, and separated the disciples, reasoning daily in the school of Tyrannus.

⁹แต่บางคนมีใจแข็งกระด้างไม่เชื่อและพูดหยาบช้าเรื่องทางนั้นต่อหน้าชุมนุมชน เปาโลจึงแยกไปจากเขาและพาพวกสาวกไปด้วย แล้วท่านได้ไปโต้แย้งกันทุกวันในห้องประชุมของท่านผู้หนึ่งชื่อ ทีรันนัส

¹⁰This continued for two years, so that all those who lived in Asia heard the word of the Lord Jesus, both Jews and Greeks.

¹⁰ท่านได้กระทำอย่างนั้นสิ้นสองปี จนชาวแคว้นเอเชียทั้งพวกยิวและพวกกรีกได้ยินพระวจนะของพระเยซูเจ้า

¹¹God worked special miracles by the hands of Paul,

¹¹พระเจ้าได้ทรงกระทำการอัศจรรย์อันพิสดารด้วยมือของเปาโล

¹²so that even handkerchiefs or aprons were carried away from his body to the sick, and the evil spirits went out.

¹²จนเขานำเอาผ้าเช็ดหน้ากับผ้ากันเปื้อนจากตัวเปาโลไปวางที่ตัวคนป่วยไข้ โรคนั้นก็หายและวิญญาณชั่วก็ออกจากคน

¹³But some of the itinerant Jews, exorcists, took on themselves to invoke over those who had the evil spirits the name of the Lord Jesus, saying, “We adjure you by Jesus whom Paul preaches.”

¹³แต่พวกยิวบางคนที่เที่ยวไปเป็นหมอผีพยายามใช้พระนามของพระเยซูเจ้าขับวิญญาณชั่วว่า "เราสั่งเจ้าโดยพระเยซูซึ่งเปาโลได้ประกาศนั้น"

¹⁴There were seven sons of one Sceva, a Jewish chief priest, who did this.

¹⁴พวกยิวคนหนึ่งชื่อเสวาเป็นปุโรหิตใหญ่มีบุตรชายเจ็ดคนซึ่งได้กระทำอย่างนั้น

¹⁵The evil spirit answered, “Jesus I know, and Paul I know, but who are you?”

¹⁵ฝ่ายวิญญาณชั่วจึงตอบเขาว่า "พระเยซู ข้าก็รู้จัก และเปาโล ข้าก็รู้จัก แต่พวกเจ้าเป็นผู้ใดเล่า"

¹⁶The man in whom the evil spirit was leaped on them, and overpowered them, and prevailed against them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded.

¹⁶คนที่มีวิญญาณชั่วสิงอยู่จึงกระโดดใส่คนเหล่านั้นและเอาชนะเขา และปราบเขาลงได้ จนคนเหล่านั้นต้องหนีออกไปจากเรือนทั้งเปลือยกายและบาดเจ็บ

¹⁷This became known to all, both Jews and Greeks, who lived at Ephesus. Fear fell on them all, and the name of the Lord Jesus was magnified.

¹⁷เรื่องนั้นได้ลือกันไปถึงหูคนทั้งปวงที่อยู่ในเมืองเอเฟซัสทั้งพวกยิวกับพวกกรีก และคนทั้งปวงก็พากันมีความเกรงกลัว และพระนามของพระเยซูเจ้าก็เป็นที่ยกย่องสรรเสริญ

¹⁸Many also of those who had believed came, confessing, and declaring their deeds.

¹⁸มีหลายคนที่เชื่อแล้วได้มาสารภาพ และเล่าเรื่องการซึ่งเขาได้กระทำไปนั้น

¹⁹Many of those who practiced magical arts brought their books together and burned them in the sight of all. They counted their price, and found it to be fifty thousand pieces of silver. The 50,000 pieces of silver here probably referred to 50,000 drachmas. If so, the value of the burned books was equivalent to about 160 man-years of wages for agricultural laborers

¹⁹และหลายคนที่ใช้เวทมนตร์ได้เอาตำราของตนมาเผาเสียต่อหน้าคนทั้งปวง ตำราเหล่านั้นคิดเป็นราคาถึงห้าหมื่นเหรียญเงิน

²⁰So the word of the Lord was growing and becoming mighty.

²⁰พระวจนะของพระเจ้าก็บังเกิดผลอย่างมากและมีชัย

²¹Now after these things had ended, Paul determined in the spirit, when he had passed through Macedonia and Achaia, to go to Jerusalem, saying, “After I have been there, I must also see Rome.”

²¹ครั้นสิ้นเหตุการณ์เหล่านี้แล้วเปาโลได้ตั้งใจว่า เมื่อไปทั่วแคว้นมาซิโดเนียกับแคว้นอาคายาแล้วจะเลยไปยังกรุงเยรูซาเล็ม และพูดว่า "เมื่อข้าพเจ้าไปที่นั่นแล้ว ข้าพเจ้าจะต้องไปเห็นกรุงโรมด้วย"

²²Having sent into Macedonia two of those who served him, Timothy and Erastus, he himself stayed in Asia for a while.

²²ท่านจึงใช้ผู้ช่วยของท่านสองคน คือทิโมธีกับเอรัสทัสไปยังแคว้นมาซิโดเนีย ฝ่ายท่านก็พักอยู่หน่อยหนึ่งในแคว้นเอเชีย

²³About that time there arose no small stir concerning the Way.

²³คราวนั้นเกิดการวุ่นวายมากเพราะเหตุทางนั้น

²⁴For a certain man named Demetrius, a silversmith, who made silver shrines of Artemis, brought no little business to the craftsmen,

²⁴ด้วยมีชายคนหนึ่งชื่อเดเมตริอัส เป็นช่างเงินได้เอาเงินทำเป็นรูปพระอารเทมิสทำให้พวกช่างเงินนั้นได้กำไรมาก

²⁵whom he gathered together, with the workmen of like occupation, and said, “Sirs, you know that by this business we have our wealth.

²⁵เดเมตริอัสจึงประชุมช่างเหล่านั้นที่ทำการคล้ายกันแล้วว่า "ท่านทั้งหลาย ท่านทราบอยู่ว่าพวกเราได้ทรัพย์สินเงินทองมาก็เพราะทำการอันนี้

²⁶You see and hear, that not at Ephesus alone, but almost throughout all Asia, this Paul has persuaded and turned away many people, saying that they are no gods, that are made with hands.

²⁶และท่านทั้งหลายได้ยินและได้เห็นอยู่ว่า ไม่ใช่เฉพาะในเมืองเอเฟซัสเมืองเดียว แต่เกือบทั่วแคว้นเอเชีย เปาโลคนนี้ได้ชักชวนคนเป็นอันมากให้เลิกทางเก่าเสีย โดยได้กล่าวว่าสิ่งที่มือมนุษย์ทำนั้นไม่ใช่พระ

²⁷Not only is there danger that this our trade come into disrepute, but also that the temple of the great goddess Artemis will be counted as nothing, and her majesty destroyed, whom all Asia and the world worships.”

²⁷น่ากลัวว่าไม่ใช่แต่อาชีพของเราจะเสียไปอย่างเดียว แต่พระวิหารของพระอารเทมิสซึ่งเป็นใหญ่จะเป็นที่หมิ่นประมาทด้วย และสง่าราศีแห่งรูปของพระแม่เจ้านั้นซึ่งเป็นที่นับถือของบรรดาชาวแคว้นเอเชียกับสิ้นทั้งโลก จะเสื่อมลงไป"

²⁸When they heard this they were filled with anger, and cried out, saying, “Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!”

²⁸ครั้นคนทั้งหลายได้ยินดังนั้น ต่างก็โกรธแค้นและร้องว่า "พระอารเทมิสของชาวเอเฟซัสเป็นใหญ่"

²⁹The whole city was filled with confusion, and they rushed with one accord into the theater, having seized Gaius and Aristarchus, men of Macedonia, Paul’s companions in travel.

²⁹แล้วก็เกิดการวุ่นวายใหญ่โตทั่วทั้งเมือง เขาจึงได้จับกายอัสกับอาริสทารคัสชาวมาซิโดเนียผู้เป็นเพื่อนเดินทางของเปาโล ลากวิ่งเข้าไปในโรงมหรสพ

³⁰When Paul wanted to enter in to the people, the disciples didn’t allow him.

³⁰ฝ่ายเปาโลใคร่จะเข้าไปในหมู่คนด้วย แต่พวกสาวกไม่ยอมให้ท่านเข้าไป

³¹Certain also of the Asiarchs, being his friends, sent to him and begged him not to venture into the theater.

³¹มีบางคนในพวกเจ้านายที่ประจำแคว้นเอเชียซึ่งเป็นสหายของเปาโล ได้ใช้คนไปวิงวอนขอเปาโลมิให้เข้าไปในโรงมหรสพ

³²Some therefore cried one thing, and some another, for the assembly was in confusion. Most of them didn’t know why they had come together.

³²บางคนจึงได้ร้องว่าอย่างนี้ บางคนได้ร้องว่าอย่างนั้น เพราะว่าที่ประชุมวุ่นวายมาก และคนโดยมากไม่รู้ว่าเขาประชุมกันด้วยเรื่องอะไร

³³They brought Alexander out of the multitude, the Jews putting him forward. Alexander beckoned with his hand, and would have made a defense to the people.

³³พวกเหล่านั้นบางคนได้ดันอเล็กซานเดอร์ ซึ่งเป็นคนที่พวกยิวให้ออกมาข้างหน้า อเล็กซานเดอร์จึงโบกมือหมายจะกล่าวแก้แทนต่อหน้าคนทั้งปวง

³⁴But when they perceived that he was a Jew, all with one voice for a time of about two hours cried out, “Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!”

³⁴แต่เมื่อคนทั้งหลายรู้ว่าท่านเป็นคนยิว เขาก็ยิ่งส่งเสียงร้องพร้อมกันอยู่ประมาณสักสองชั่วโมงว่า "พระอารเทมิสของชาวเอเฟซัสเป็นใหญ่"

³⁵When the town clerk had quieted the multitude, he said, “You men of Ephesus, what man is there who doesn’t know that the city of the Ephesians is temple keeper of the great goddess Artemis, and of the image which fell down from Zeus?

³⁵ฝ่ายนายอำเภอเมื่อบังคับให้ประชาชนเงียบลงแล้วจึงกล่าวว่า "ท่านชาวเอเฟซัสทั้งปวง มีผู้ใดบ้างซึ่งไม่ทราบว่า ชาวเมืองเอเฟซัสนี้เป็นผู้รักษาพระวิหารของพระแม่เจ้าอารเทมิสที่เป็นใหญ่ และเป็นผู้รักษารูปศิลาซึ่งตกลงมาจากฟ้า

³⁶Seeing then that these things can’t be denied, you ought to be quiet, and to do nothing rash.

³⁶เมื่อข้อนั้นกล่าวโต้แย้งไม่ได้แล้ว ท่านทั้งหลายควรจะนิ่งสงบสติอารมณ์ อย่าทำอะไรวู่วามไป

³⁷For you have brought these men here, who are neither robbers of temples nor blasphemers of your goddess.

³⁷ท่านทั้งหลายได้พาคนเหล่านี้มา ซึ่งมิใช่เป็นคนปล้นพระวิหารหรือพูดหมิ่นประมาทพระแม่เจ้าของพวกท่าน

³⁸If therefore Demetrius and the craftsmen who are with him have a matter against anyone, the courts are open, and there are proconsuls. Let them press charges against one another.

³⁸เหตุฉะนั้น ถ้าแม้เดเมตริอัสกับพวกช่างที่มีอาชีพอย่างเดียวกันเป็นความกับผู้ใด วันกำหนดที่จะว่าความก็มี ผู้พิพากษาก็มี ให้เขามาฟ้องกันเถิด

³⁹But if you seek anything about other matters, it will be settled in the regular assembly.

³⁹แต่ถ้าแม้ท่านมีข้อหาอะไรอีก ก็ให้ชำระกันในที่ประชุมตามกฎหมาย

⁴⁰For indeed we are in danger of being accused concerning this day’s riot, there being no cause. Concerning it, we wouldn’t be able to give an account of this commotion.”

⁴⁰ด้วยว่าน่ากลัวเราจะต้องถูกฟ้องว่าเป็นผู้ก่อการจลาจลวันนี้ เพราะเราทั้งหลายไม่อาจยกข้อใดขึ้นอ้างเป็นมูลเหตุพอแก่การจลาจลคราวนี้ได้"

⁴¹When he had thus spoken, he dismissed the assembly.

⁴¹ครั้นกล่าวอย่างนั้นแล้วท่านจึงให้เลิกชุมนุม
