¹In the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim king of Judah came Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon to Jerusalem, and besieged it.

²The Lord The word translated “Lord” is “Adonai.” gave Jehoiakim king of Judah into his hand, with part of the vessels of the house of God The Hebrew word rendered “God” is “Elohim.” ; and he carried them into the land of Shinar to the house of his god: and he brought the vessels into the treasure house of his god.

²และองค์พระผู้เป็นเจ้าทรงมอบเยโฮยาคิมกษัตริย์ของยูดาห์ไว้ในหัตถ์ของพระองค์ท่าน พร้อมทั้งเครื่องใช้บางชิ้นแห่งพระนิเวศของพระเจ้า และพระองค์ท่านก็นำของเหล่านั้นมายังแผ่นดินชินาร์มายังนิเวศแห่งพระของพระองค์ท่าน และทรงบรรจุเครื่องใช้เหล่านั้นไว้ในคลังของพระของพระองค์ท่าน

³The king spoke to Ashpenaz the master of his eunuchs, that he should bring in certain of the children of Israel, even of the seed royal and of the nobles;

³แล้วกษัตริย์นั้นก็ทรงบัญชาให้อัชเปนัสหัวหน้าขันทีของพระองค์ท่าน ให้นำคนอิสราเอลบางคน ทั้งเชื้อพระวงศ์และเชื้อสายของเจ้านาย

⁴youths in whom was no blemish, but well-favored, and skillful in all wisdom, and endowed with knowledge, and understanding science, and such as had ability to stand in the king’s palace; and that he should teach them the learning and the language of the Chaldeans.

⁴พวกหนุ่มๆที่ปราศจากตำหนิ มีรูปร่างงามและเชี่ยวชาญในสรรพปัญญา กอปรด้วยความรู้และเข้าใจในสรรพวิทยา กับสามารถที่จะรับราชการในพระราชวังและทรงให้สอนวิชาและภาษาของคนเคลเดียให้เขาทั้งหลาย

⁵The king appointed for them a daily portion of the king’s dainties, and of the wine which he drank, and that they should be nourished three years; that at its end they should stand before the king.

⁵กษัตริย์ทรงให้นำอาหารสูงซึ่งกษัตริย์เสวย และเหล้าองุ่นซึ่งพระองค์ท่านดื่มให้แก่เขาเหล่านั้นตามกำหนดทุกวัน ทรงให้เขาทั้งหลายรับการเลี้ยงดูอยู่สามปี เมื่อครบกำหนดเวลานั้นแล้วทรงให้เขารับใช้ต่อพระพักตร์กษัตริย์

⁶Now among these were, of the children of Judah, Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah.

⁶ในบรรดาคนยูดาห์นั้นมีดาเนียล ฮานันยาห์ มิชาเอล และอาซาริยาห์

⁷The prince of the eunuchs gave names to them: to Daniel he gave the name of Belteshazzar; and to Hananiah, of Shadrach; and to Mishael, of Meshach; and to Azariah, of Abednego.

⁷และท่านหัวหน้าขันทีจึงตั้งชื่อให้ใหม่ ดาเนียลนั้นให้เรียกว่าเบลเทชัสซาร์ ฮานันยาห์เรียกว่าชัดรัค มิชาเอลเรียกว่าเมชาค และอาซาริยาห์เรียกว่าเอเบดเนโก

⁸But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the king’s dainties, nor with the wine which he drank: therefore he requested of the prince of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself.

⁸แต่ดาเนียลตั้งใจไว้ว่าจะไม่กระทำตัวให้เป็นมลทินด้วยอาหารสูงของกษัตริย์ หรือด้วยเหล้าองุ่นซึ่งพระองค์ดื่ม เพราะฉะนั้นเขาจึงขอหัวหน้าขันทีให้ยอมเขาที่ไม่กระทำตัวให้เป็นมลทิน

⁹Now God made Daniel to find kindness and compassion in the sight of the prince of the eunuchs.

⁹และพระเจ้าทรงให้หัวหน้าขันทีชอบและสมเพชดาเนียล

¹⁰The prince of the eunuchs said to Daniel, I fear my lord the king, who has appointed your food and your drink: for why should he see your faces worse looking than the youths who are of your own age? so would you endanger my head with the king.

¹⁰และหัวหน้าขันทีจึงกล่าวแก่ดาเนียลว่า "ข้าเกรงว่ากษัตริย์เจ้านายของข้าผู้ทรงกำหนดอาหารและเครื่องดื่มของเจ้า ทอดพระเนตรเห็นว่า พวกเจามีหน้าซูบซีดกว่าบรรดาคนหนุ่มๆอายุรุ่นราวคราวเดียวกัน เจ้าก็จะกระทำให้ศีรษะของข้าเข้าสู่อันตรายเพราะกษัตริย์"

¹¹Then Daniel said to the steward whom the prince of the eunuchs had appointed over Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah:

¹¹แล้วดาเนียลจึงกล่าวแก่มหาดเล็กผู้ที่หัวหน้าขันทีกำหนดให้ดูแลดาเนียล ฮานันยาห์ มิชาเอล และอาซาริยาห์ ว่า

¹²Test your servants, I beg you, ten days; and let them give us vegetables to eat, and water to drink.

¹²"ขอท่านจงทดลองผู้รับใช้ของท่านสักสิบวัน ขอให้เขานำผักมาให้เรากินและน้ำมาให้เราดื่ม

¹³Then let our faces be looked on before you, and the face of the youths who eat of the king’s dainties; and as you see, deal with your servants.

¹³แล้วให้ท่านตรวจดูหน้าตาของเราทั้งหลายเบื้องหน้าท่านและตรวจดูหน้าตาของบรรดาอนุชนผู้รับประทานอาหารสูงของกษัตริย์ และเมื่อท่านเห็นอย่างไรแล้วจงกระทำแก่ผู้รับใช้ของท่านอย่างนั้นเถิด"

¹⁴So he listened to them in this matter, and proved them ten days.

¹⁴เขาก็ยอมทำตามคนเหล่านั้นในเรื่องนี้และทดลองเขาอยู่สิบวัน

¹⁵At the end of ten days their faces appeared fairer, and they were fatter in flesh, than all the youths who ate of the king’s dainties.

¹⁵เมื่อครบสิบวันแล้วหน้าตาของคนเหล่านั้นดีกว่า และเนื้อหนังก็อ้วนท้วนสมบูรณ์กว่าบรรดาอนุชนที่รับประทานอาหารสูงของกษัตริย์

¹⁶So the steward took away their dainties, and the wine that they should drink, and gave them pulse.

¹⁶ดังนั้นมหาดเล็กจึงนำอาหารสูงส่วนของเขาทั้งหลายและเหล้าองุ่นซึ่งเขาทั้งหลายควรจะได้ดื่มนั้นไปเสีย และให้ผักแก่เขา

¹⁷Now as for these four youths, God gave them knowledge and skill in all learning and wisdom: and Daniel had understanding in all visions and dreams.

¹⁷ฝ่ายอนุชนทั้งสี่คนนี้ พระเจ้าทรงประทานสรรพวิทยา และความชำนาญในเรื่องวิชาทั้งปวงและปัญญา และดาเนียลเข้าใจในนิมิตและความฝันทุกประการ

¹⁸At the end of the days which the king had appointed for bringing them in, the prince of the eunuchs brought them in before Nebuchadnezzar.

¹⁸พอสิ้นกำหนดเวลาที่กษัตริย์ทรงบัญชาให้นำเขาทั้งหลายเข้าเฝ้า หัวหน้าขันทีจึงนำเขาทั้งหลายเข้ามาเฝ้าเนบูคัดเนสซาร์

¹⁹The king talked with them; and among them all was found none like Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah: therefore stood they before the king.

¹⁹และกษัตริย์ก็ทรงสัมภาษณ์เขา ในบรรดาอนุชนเหล่านั้นไม่พบสักคนหนึ่งที่เหมือนดาเนียล ฮานันยาห์ มิชาเอลและอาซาริยาห์ เพราะฉะนั้นเขาจึงได้รับใช้ต่อพระพักตร์กษัตริย์

²⁰In every matter of wisdom and understanding, concerning which the king inquired of them, he found them ten times better than all the magicians and enchanters who were in all his realm.

²⁰ในบรรดาเรื่องราวอันเกี่ยวกับปัญญาและความเข้าใจ ซึ่งกษัตริย์ตรัสถามเขาทั้งหลาย ทรงเห็นว่าเขาทั้งหลายดีกว่าพวกโหร และพวกหมอดู ซึ่งอยู่ในอาณาจักรทั้งสิ้นของพระองค์สิบเท่า

²¹Daniel continued even to the first year of king Cyrus.

²¹และดาเนียลก็ได้รับราชการเรื่อยมาจนปีแรกแห่งรัชกาลกษัตริย์ไซรัส
