¹Now the word of Yahweh “Yahweh” is God’s proper Name, sometimes rendered “LORD” (all caps) in other translations. came to Jonah the son of Amittai, saying,

¹พระวจนะของพระเยโฮวาห์มาถึงโยนาห์บุตรชายของอามิททัยว่า

²“Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and preach against it, for their wickedness has come up before me.”

²"จงลุกขึ้นไปยังนีนะเวห์นครใหญ่ และร้องกล่าวโทษชาวเมืองนั้น เหตุความชั่วของเขาทั้งหลายได้ขึ้นมาเบื้องหน้าเราแล้ว"

³But Jonah rose up to flee to Tarshish from the presence of Yahweh. He went down to Joppa, and found a ship going to Tarshish; so he paid its fare, and went down into it, to go with them to Tarshish from the presence of Yahweh.

³แต่โยนาห์ได้ลุกขึ้นหนีไปยังเมืองทารชิชจากพระพักตร์พระเยโฮวาห์ ท่านได้ลงไปยังเมืองยัฟฟา และพบกำปั่นลำหนึ่งกำลังไปเมืองทารชิช ดังนั้นท่านจึงชำระค่าโดยสาร และขึ้นเรือเดินทางร่วมกับเขาทั้งหลายไปยังเมืองทารชิชให้พ้นจากพระพักตร์พระเยโฮวาห์

⁴But Yahweh sent out a great wind on the sea, and there was a mighty storm on the sea, so that the ship was likely to break up.

⁴แต่พระเยโฮวาห์ทรงขับกระแสลมใหญ่ขึ้นเหนือทะเล จึงเกิดพายุใหญ่ในทะเลนั้น จนน่ากลัวกำปั่นจะอับปาง

⁵Then the mariners were afraid, and every man cried to his god. They threw the cargo that was in the ship into the sea to lighten the ship. But Jonah had gone down into the innermost parts of the ship, and he was laying down, and was fast asleep.

⁵แล้วบรรดาลูกเรือก็กลัว ต่างก็ร้องขอต่อพระของตน และเขาโยนสินค้าในกำปั่นลงในทะเลเพื่อให้กำปั่นเบาขึ้น แต่โยนาห์เข้าไปข้างในเรือ นอนลงและหลับสนิท

⁶So the shipmaster came to him, and said to him, “What do you mean, sleeper? Arise, call on your God or, gods ! Maybe your God or, gods will notice us, so that we won’t perish.”

⁶นายเรือจึงมาหาท่านและกล่าวแก่ท่านว่า "เจ้าคนขี้เซาเอ๋ย อย่างไรกันนี่ ลุกขึ้นซิ จงร้องขอต่อพระเจ้าของเจ้า ชะรอยพระเจ้านั้นจะทรงระลึกถึงพวกเราบ้าง เราจะได้ไม่พินาศ"

⁷They all said to each other, “Come, let us cast lots, that we may know who is responsible for this evil that is on us.” So they cast lots, and the lot fell on Jonah.

⁷เขาทั้งหลายก็ชักชวนกันว่า "มาเถอะ ให้เราจับสลากกัน เพื่อเราจะทราบว่า ใครเป็นต้นเหตุแห่งภัยซึ่งเกิดขึ้นแก่เรานี้" ดังนั้นเขาก็จับสลาก สลากนั้นก็ตกแก่โยนาห์

⁸Then they asked him, “Tell us, please, for whose cause this evil is on us. What is your occupation? Where do you come from? What is your country? Of what people are you?”

⁸เขาจึงพูดกับท่านว่า "จงบอกเรามาเถิดว่า ภัยซึ่งเกิดขึ้นแก่เรานี้ ใครเป็นต้นเหตุ เจ้าหากินทางไหน และเจ้ามาจากไหน ประเทศของเจ้าชื่ออะไร เจ้าเป็นคนชาติไหน"

⁹He said to them, “I am a Hebrew, and I fear Yahweh, the God The Hebrew word rendered “God” is “Elohim.” of heaven, who has made the sea and the dry land.”

⁹และท่านจึงตอบเขาว่า "ข้าพเจ้าเป็นคนฮีบรู และข้าพเจ้ายำเกรงพระเยโฮวาห์พระเจ้าแห่งฟ้าสวรรค์ ผู้ทรงสร้างทะเลและแผ่นดินแห้ง"

¹⁰Then were the men exceedingly afraid, and said to him, “What is this that you have done?” For the men knew that he was fleeing from the presence of Yahweh, because he had told them.

¹⁰คนทั้งปวงก็กลัวยิ่งนัก จึงถามท่านว่า "ท่านกระทำอะไรเช่นนี้หนอ" เพราะคนเหล่านั้นทราบแล้วว่า ท่านหลบหนีจากพระพักตร์พระเยโฮวาห์ เพราะท่านบอกแก่เขาเช่นนั้น

¹¹Then they said to him, “What shall we do to you, that the sea may be calm to us?” For the sea grew more and more stormy.

¹¹เขาทั้งหลายจึงกล่าวแก่ท่านว่า "เราควรจะทำอย่างไรแก่ท่าน เพื่อทะเลจะได้สงบลงเพื่อเรา" เพราะทะเลยิ่งกำเริบมากขึ้นทุกที

¹²He said to them, “Take me up, and throw me into the sea. Then the sea will be calm for you; for I know that because of me this great storm is on you.”

¹²ท่านจึงตอบเขาทั้งหลายว่า "จงจับตัวข้าพเจ้าโยนลงไปในทะเลก็แล้วกัน ทะเลก็จะสงบลงเพื่อท่าน เพราะข้าพเจ้าทราบอยู่ว่า ที่พายุใหญ่เกิดขึ้นแก่ท่านเช่นนี้ ก็เนื่องจากตัวข้าพเจ้าเอง"

¹³Nevertheless the men rowed hard to get them back to the land; but they could not, for the sea grew more and more stormy against them.

¹³ถึงกระนั้นก็ดีพวกลูกเรือก็ช่วยกันตีกรรเชียงอย่างแข็งแรงเพื่อจะนำเรือกลับเข้าฝั่งแต่ไม่ได้ เพราะว่าทะเลยิ่งกำเริบมากขึ้นต้านเขาไว้

¹⁴Therefore they cried to Yahweh, and said, “We beg you, Yahweh, we beg you, don’t let us die for this man’s life, and don’t lay on us innocent blood; for you, Yahweh, have done as it pleased you.”

¹⁴เพราะฉะนั้นเขาจึงร้องทูลต่อพระเยโฮวาห์ว่า "ข้าแต่พระเยโฮวาห์ ข้าพระองค์ทั้งหลายขอวิงวอนต่อพระองค์ ขออย่าให้พวกข้าพระองค์พินาศเพราะชีวิตของชายผู้นี้เลย ขออย่าให้โทษของการทำให้โลหิตที่ไร้ความผิดตกมาเหนือข้าพระองค์ ข้าแต่พระเยโฮวาห์ เพราะว่าพระองค์ได้ทรงกระทำสิ่งที่พระองค์ทรงพอพระทัย"

¹⁵So they took up Jonah, and threw him into the sea; and the sea ceased its raging.

¹⁵เขาจึงจับโยนาห์ทิ้งลงไปในทะเล ความปั่นป่วนในทะเลก็สงบลง

¹⁶Then the men feared Yahweh exceedingly; and they offered a sacrifice to Yahweh, and made vows.

¹⁶คนเหล่านั้นก็ยำเกรงพระเยโฮวาห์ยิ่งนัก เขาทั้งหลายก็ถวายสัตวบูชาแด่พระเยโฮวาห์และปฏิญาณตัวไว้

¹⁷Yahweh prepared a great fish to swallow up Jonah, and Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.

¹⁷และพระเยโฮวาห์ทรงกำหนดให้ปลามหึมาตัวหนึ่งกลืนโยนาห์เข้าไป โยนาห์ก็อยู่ในท้องปลานั้นสามวันสามคืน
