¹The word which came to Jeremiah from Yahweh, after that Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard had let him go from Ramah, when he had taken him being bound in chains among all the captives of Jerusalem and Judah, who were carried away captive to Babylon.

²護衛長把耶利米提出來，對他說：“耶和華你的　神曾說要降這災禍在這地方；

²The captain of the guard took Jeremiah, and said to him, Yahweh your God pronounced this evil on this place;

³現在耶和華使災禍臨到，照他所說的行了；因為你們得罪了耶和華，沒有聽從他的話，所以這事才臨到你們。

³and Yahweh has brought it, and done according as he spoke: because you have sinned against Yahweh, and have not obeyed his voice, therefore this thing has come on you.

⁴我現在解開你手上的鐵鍊。你若認為與我一同到巴比倫去好，就一起去，我必好好照顧你；你若認為與我一同到巴比倫去不好，就不必去。看，全地都在你面前，你認為去哪裡好、哪裡合宜，就到哪裡去吧！”

⁴Now, behold, I release you this day from the chains which are on your hand. If it seems good to you to come with me into Babylon, come, and I will take care of you; but if it seems bad to you to come with me into Babylon, don’t: behold, all the land is before you; where it seems good and right to you to go, there go.

⁵耶利米與基大利耶利米還沒有回答，護衛長又說（“耶利米還沒有回答，護衛長又說”原文意思難確定，有譯本改作“你若認為回去好”）：“你可以回到沙番的孫子、亞希甘的兒子基大利那裡去！基大利是巴比倫王指派管理猶大各城的。你可以和他一起住在人民中間；或是你認為去哪裡合宜，就到哪裡去吧！”於是護衛長給他糧食和禮物，就釋放他走了。

⁵Now while he had not yet gone back, Go back then, he said, to Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, whom the king of Babylon has made governor over the cities of Judah, and dwell with him among the people; or go wherever it seems right to you to go. So the captain of the guard gave him food and a present, and let him go.

⁶耶利米就到米斯巴去見亞希甘的兒子基大利，和他一同住在那地剩下的人民中間。

⁶Then went Jeremiah to Gedaliah the son of Ahikam to Mizpah, and lived with him among the people who were left in the land.

⁷在田野的眾將領和他們的士兵，聽見巴比倫王委派了亞希甘的兒子基大利管理那地，也委派他管理那些沒有被擄到巴比倫去的男人、婦女、孩童，和那地最貧窮的人，

⁷Now when all the captains of the forces who were in the fields, even they and their men, heard that the king of Babylon had made Gedaliah the son of Ahikam governor in the land, and had committed to him men, and women, and children, and of the poorest of the land, of those who were not carried away captive to Babylon;

⁸他們就來到米斯巴去見基大利；其中有尼探雅的兒子以實瑪利、加利亞的兩個兒子約哈難和約拿單、單戶篾的兒子西萊雅、尼陀法人以斐的眾子，和瑪迦人的兒子耶撒尼亞，以及他們的士兵。

⁸then they came to Gedaliah to Mizpah, Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, and Johanan and Jonathan the sons of Kareah, and Seraiah the son of Tanhumeth, and the sons of Ephai the Netophathite, and Jezaniah the son of the Maacathite, they and their men.

⁹沙番的孫子、亞希甘的兒子基大利向他們和他們的士兵起誓，說：“你們不要懼怕服事迦勒底人，只管住在這地，服事巴比倫王，就可以平安無事。

⁹Gedaliah the son of Ahikam the son of Shaphan swore to them and to their men, saying, Don’t be afraid to serve the Chaldeans: dwell in the land, and serve the king of Babylon, and it shall be well with you.

¹⁰至於我，我要留在米斯巴，侍候那些來到我們這裡的迦勒底人。你們只管收存酒、夏天的果子和油，放在器皿裡，並且住在你們所佔有的城中。”

¹⁰As for me, behold, I will dwell at Mizpah, to stand before the Chaldeans who shall come to us: but you, gather wine and summer fruits and oil, and put them in your vessels, and dwell in your cities that you have taken.

¹¹那些在摩押、亞捫、以東和各地所有的猶大人，聽見了巴比倫王在猶大留下一些餘民，並且指派沙番的孫子、亞希甘的兒子基大利管理他們，

¹¹Likewise when all the Jews who were in Moab, and among the children of Ammon, and in Edom, and who were in all the countries, heard that the king of Babylon had left a remnant of Judah, and that he had set over them Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan;

¹²所有的猶大人就從被趕逐到的各地方回來，到猶大地的米斯巴去見基大利，並且收存了許多的酒和夏天的果子。

¹²then all the Jews returned out of all places where they were driven, and came to the land of Judah, to Gedaliah, to Mizpah, and gathered wine and summer fruits very much.

¹³基大利不信警告加利亞的兒子約哈難和在田野的眾將領，都到米斯巴去見基大利，

¹³Moreover Johanan the son of Kareah, and all the captains of the forces who were in the fields, came to Gedaliah to Mizpah,

¹⁴對他說：“亞捫王巴利斯派尼探雅的兒子以實瑪利來殺你，你知道嗎？”亞希甘的兒子基大利不相信他們。

¹⁴and said to him, Do you know that Baalis the king of the children of Ammon has sent Ishmael the son of Nethaniah to take your life? But Gedaliah the son of Ahikam didn’t believe them.

¹⁵後來加利亞的兒子約哈難在米斯巴私下告訴基大利說：“請容我去把尼探雅的兒子以實瑪利殺了，必沒有人知道；為甚麼要讓他殺你，以致集合到你那裡來的所有猶大人都分散，猶大餘剩的人都滅亡呢？”

¹⁵Then Johanan the son of Kareah spoke to Gedaliah in Mizpah secretly, saying, Please let me go, and I will kill Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, and no man shall know it: why should he take your life, that all the Jews who are gathered to you should be scattered, and the remnant of Judah perish?

¹⁶但亞希甘的兒子基大利對加利亞的兒子約哈難說：“你不可作這事，因為你所說關於以實瑪利的事都是謊話！”

¹⁶But Gedaliah the son of Ahikam said to Johanan the son of Kareah, You shall not do this thing; for you speak falsely of Ishmael.
