¹I made a covenant with mine eyes; why then should I think upon a maid?

¹Sa svojim očima savez sam sklopio da pogledat neću nijednu djevicu.

²For what portion of God is there from above? and what inheritance of the Almighty from on high?

²A što mi je Bog odozgo dosudio, kakva mi je baština od Svesilnoga?

³Is not destruction to the wicked? and a strange punishment to the workers of iniquity?

³TÓa nije li nesreća za opakoga, a nevolja za one koji zlo čine?

⁴Doth not he see my ways, and count all my steps?

⁴Ne proniče li on sve moje putove, ne prebraja li on sve moje korake?

⁵If I have walked with vanity, or if my foot hath hasted to deceit;

⁵Zar sam ikad u društvu laži hodio, zar mi je noga k prijevari hitjela?

⁶Let me be weighed in an even balance that God may know mine integrity.

⁶Nek' me na ispravnoj mjeri Bog izmjeri pa će uvidjeti neporočnost moju!

⁷If my step hath turned out of the way, and mine heart walked after mine eyes, and if any blot hath cleaved to mine hands;

⁷Ako mi je korak s puta kad zašao, ako mi se srce za okom povelo, ako mi je ljaga ruke okaljala,

⁸Then let me sow, and let another eat; yea, let my offspring be rooted out.

⁸neka drugi jede što sam posijao, neka sve moje iskorijene izdanke!

⁹If mine heart have been deceived by a woman, or if I have laid wait at my neighbour's door;

⁹Ako mi zavede srce žena neka, ako za vratima svog bližnjeg kad vrebah,

¹⁰Then let my wife grind unto another, and let others bow down upon her.

¹⁰neka moja žena drugom mlin okreće, neka s drugim svoju podijeli postelju!

¹¹For this is an heinous crime; yea, it is an iniquity to be punished by the judges.

¹¹Djelo bestidno time bih počinio, zločin kojem pravda treba da presudi,

¹²For it is a fire that consumeth to destruction, and would root out all mine increase.

¹²užego vatru što žeže do Propasti i što bi svu moju sažgala ljetinu.

¹³If I did despise the cause of my manservant or of my maidservant, when they contended with me;

¹³Ako kada prezreh pravo sluge svoga il' služavke, sa mnom kad su se parbili,

¹⁴What then shall I do when God riseth up? and when he visiteth, what shall I answer him?

¹⁴što ću učiniti kada Bog ustane? Što ću odvratit' kad račun zatraži?

¹⁵Did not he that made me in the womb make him? and did not one fashion us in the womb?

¹⁵Zar nas oba on ne stvori u utrobi i jednako sazda u krilu majčinu?

¹⁶If I have withheld the poor from their desire, or have caused the eyes of the widow to fail;

¹⁶Ogluših li se na molbe siromaha ili rasplakah oči udovičine?

¹⁷Or have eaten my morsel myself alone, and the fatherless hath not eaten thereof;

¹⁷Jesam li kada sam svoj jeo zalogaj a da ga nisam sa sirotom dijelio?

¹⁸(For from my youth he was brought up with me, as with a father, and I have guided her from my mother's womb;)

¹⁸TÓa od mladosti k'o otac sam mu bio, vodio sam ga od krila materina!

¹⁹If I have seen any perish for want of clothing, or any poor without covering;

¹⁹Zar sam beskućnika vidio bez odjeće ili siromaha kog bez pokrivača

²⁰If his loins have not blessed me, and if he were not warmed with the fleece of my sheep;

²⁰a da mu bedra ne blagosloviše mene kad se runom mojih ovaca ogrija?

²¹If I have lifted up my hand against the fatherless, when I saw my help in the gate:

²¹Ako sam ruku na nevina podigao znajuć' da mi je na vratima branitelj,

²²Then let mine arm fall from my shoulder blade, and mine arm be broken from the bone.

²²nek' se rame moje od pleća odvali i neka mi ruka od lakta otpadne!

²³For destruction from God was a terror to me, and by reason of his highness I could not endure.

²³Jer strahote Božje na mene bi pale, njegovu ne bih odolio veličanstvu.

²⁴If I have made gold my hope, or have said to the fine gold, Thou art my confidence;

²⁴Zar sam u zlato pouzdanje stavio i rekao zlatu: 'Sigurnosti moja!'

²⁵If I rejoice because my wealth was great, and because mine hand had gotten much;

²⁵Zar sam se veliku blagu radovao, bogatstvima koja su mi stekle ruke?

²⁶If I beheld the sun when it shined, or the moon walking in brightness;

²⁶Zar se, gledajući sunce kako blista i kako mjesec sjajni nebom putuje,

²⁷And my heart hath been secretly enticed, or my mouth hath kissed my hand:

²⁷moje srce dalo potajno zavesti da bih rukom njima poljubac poslao?

²⁸This also were an iniquity to be punished by the judge: for I should have denied the God that is above.

²⁸Grijeh bi to bio što za sudom vapije, jer Boga višnjega bih se odrekao.

²⁹If I rejoice at the destruction of him that hated me, or lifted up myself when evil found him:

²⁹Zar se obradovah nevolji dušmana i likovah kad ga je zlo zadesilo,

³⁰Neither have I suffered my mouth to sin by wishing a curse to his soul.

³⁰ja koji ne dadoh griješiti jeziku, proklinjući ga i želeći da umre?

³¹If the men of my tabernacle said not, Oh that we had of his flesh! we cannot be satisfied.

³¹Ne govorahu li ljudi mog šatora: 'TÓa koga nije on mesom nasitio'?

³²The stranger did not lodge in the street: but I opened my doors to the traveller.

³²Nikad nije stranac vani noćivao, putniku sam svoja otvarao vrata.

³³If I covered my transgressions as Adam, by hiding mine iniquity in my bosom:

³³Zar sam grijehe svoje ljudima tajio, zar sam u grudima skrivao krivicu

³⁴Did I fear a great multitude, or did the contempt of families terrify me, that I kept silence, and went not out of the door?

³⁴jer sam se plašio govorkanja mnoštva i strahovao od prezira plemenskog te sam mučao ne prelazeć' svoga praga?

³⁵Oh that one would hear me! behold, my desire is, that the Almighty would answer me, and that mine adversary had written a book.

³⁵O, kad bi koga bilo da mene sasluša! Posljednju sam svoju riječ ja izrekao: na Svesilnom je sad da mi odgovori! Nek' mi optužnicu napiše protivnik,

³⁶Surely I would take it upon my shoulder, and bind it as a crown to me.

³⁶i ja ću je nosit' na svome ramenu, čelo ću njome k'o krunom uresit'.

³⁷I would declare unto him the number of my steps; as a prince would I go near unto him.

³⁷Dat ću mu račun o svojim koracima i poput kneza pred njega ću stupiti."

³⁸If my land cry against me, or that the furrows likewise thereof complain;

³⁸Ako je na me zemlja moja vikala, ako su s njom brazde njezine plakale;

³⁹If I have eaten the fruits thereof without money, or have caused the owners thereof to lose their life:

³⁹ako sam plodove jeo ne plativši i ako sam joj ojadio ratare,

⁴⁰Let thistles grow instead of wheat, and cockle instead of barley. The words of Job are ended.
